USCCA provides insurance roughly 30 bucks a month, they're others out there. This is who I use. Well worth it. You have to protect yourself financially and physically these days

@Caitlyn A Not legally. He was defending when inside his house. Once he went outside to confront him, he stopped being the defender under the law. Both are considered to be aggressors, and since he shot and killed the "intruder" before he actually entered the house, that removes the castle doctrine defense. Both men were armed, but he was already in a safe place then decided to leave it and confront the guy he shot. He should have stayed in the house and retained all the legal protections that entailed. Going outside removed them all. He had no legal grounds to kill the man simply to protect his property, which is what he did. He wasn't in imminent danger until he put himself in it.
Their has to be an investigation when the officers got there they had no idea what was going on. They have to take statements and gather evidence. Can’t take a persons word especially if no other witnesses.
In some states, he could be charged because he actually went outside and confronted the guy. I don't know what the laws are where he lives, but that would be one thing possibly against him.

As a ER nurse, I have had my encounters with few psych and drug oding patients during my career. I can honestly say the scariest I ever felt is when my friends boyfriend was banging on my door at 2am after she died. I knew he was a drug addict, but she kept him in control. I opened my door, and the eyes I seen terrified me. Then he just walked in my house. I was like 'Oh shit, boy done gone bat shit crazy and is in my house. He must leave now." So I ran outside with my phone and he followed me. I was able to call 911, and the cop who came, knew him well. He also just heard his GF died suddenly. So he asked if he felt he wanted to hurt himself. He said "I just want to sleep, like Aimee." So he agreed to go to the hospital with the officer. That was the last time I seen him. I was scared, felt powerless, and heart broken at the same time. I have a weapon, but never thought too get it. He banged so loud cause he's deaf and wasn't aware how loud he was..

The home owner did everything right! He purchased his weapon. He also went through proper TRAINING (can’t stress that enough) to know how to use his firearm and get familiar with it. He warned the intruder. He was put in an unfortunate situation, but resorted to a quick precise decision to defend himself by using deadly force. I hope all is well moving forward for this gentleman. Hopefully, that sends a message to others that might have a thought of running up on a person’s home.

When you shoot someone in self defense you have to expect there will be some process to follow, and it's reassuring that it's a serious process. If I have to shoot someone in self defense, I'll be ready to get the cuffs put on me; if I get charged I'll get an attorney, and so on and so forth. Hopefully I'll be able to change my underwear and grab a toothbrush before they haul me off. These are also the responsibilities of protecting yourself with a weapon.

His thug friends abandoned him to die. One of his friends also made the mistake of trying to cover their escape by firing bullets at my home. He also got shot. I didn't sleep for a couple of days, but once the adrenaline wore off and the crash passed, I slept like a baby because I did the community a favor.

Regardless of how innocent you think you are, there are so many other variables at play (e.g. incompetent or corrupt detectives for starters) that can totally destroy you and put you behind bars for a long time. when the courts say a man can't defend himself or his home from intruders, being that it is his private property, that's when things get terrible. He probably assumed that this man would be a soft target because of his age but how wrong he was. I know if I were in a similar situation I would be very afraid because of my age and living alone. He had a right to defend himself from this aggressor, and it was unfortunate that this person ended up losing their life. Moral of the story: never assume that someone that is both elderly and lives alone will be a potential soft victim, you may otherwise pay with your life if you do.

NEVER make a statement with the police until your attorney is present. It doesn’t matter how justified you are for what you did, EVERYTHING you say can and WILL be used against you in court. Your mind and mouth after an incident like this can and WILL say dumb shit that can be misconstrued and result in a self defense situation becoming a full fledged murder trial. Simply explain that you feared for your life and would like to make a full statement through your attorney. You will be detained if not arrested as part of the investigation BUT your chances of being permanently released after giving your proper statement are much higher.

This is a perfect example of a law abiding gun owner being able to protect himself and his home, and probably saving his life. Who knows how long it may have taken the police to arrive. The homeowner might have been dead by the time they got there. The homeowner understood that the police have to investigate the situation and make sure everything was legit. Great job by the homeowner in an unfortunate situation.

This is one of the best uses of firearms by lawful gun owners that I've seen. This man did everything right, he was on his own property, inside his house, called 911, gave the intruder a chance to walk away. A very mature and responsible man. @Caitlyn A Not legally. He was defending when inside his house. Once he went outside to confront him, he stopped being the defender under the law. Both are considered to be aggressors, and since he shot and killed the "intruder" before he actually entered the house, that removes the castle doctrine defense. Both men were armed, but he was already in a safe place then decided to leave it and confront the guy he shot. He should have stayed in the house and retained all the legal protections that entailed. Going outside removed them all. He had no legal grounds to kill the man simply to protect his property, which is what he did. He wasn't in imminent danger until he put himself in it.

Their has to be an investigation when the officers got there they had no idea what was going on. They have to take statements and gather evidence. Can’t take a persons word especially if no other witnesses.

As a ER nurse, I have had my encounters with few psych and drug oding patients during my career. I can honestly say the scariest I ever felt is when my friends boyfriend was banging on my door at 2am after she died. I knew he was a drug addict, but she kept him in control. I opened my door, and the eyes I seen terrified me. Then he just walked in my house. I was like 'Oh shit, boy done gone bat shit crazy and is in my house. He must leave now." So I ran outside with my phone and he followed me. I was able to call 911, and the cop who came, knew him well. He also just heard his GF died suddenly. So he asked if he felt he wanted to hurt himself. He said "I just want to sleep, like Aimee." So he agreed to go to the hospital with the officer. That was the last time I seen him. I was scared, felt powerless, and heart broken at the same time. I have a weapon, but never thought too get it. He banged so loud cause he's deaf and wasn't aware how loud he was..

The home owner did everything right! He purchased his weapon. He also went through proper TRAINING (can’t stress that enough) to know how to use his firearm and get familiar with it. He warned the intruder. He was put in an unfortunate situation, but resorted to a quick precise decision to defend himself by using deadly force. I hope all is well moving forward for this gentleman. Hopefully, that sends a message to others that might have a thought of running up on a person’s home.

I know if I were in a similar situation I would be very afraid because of my age and living alone. He had a right to defend himself from this aggressor, and it was unfortunate that this person ended up losing their life.

You have to prove that you were in danger, no chance he was going to prison. Stop freaking out. The reason the cops need to talk with people who just shot and killed people is to make sure that what they're saying is true.. If I shot the mailman in the face as he was delivering a package to my doorstep I would likely not be able to claim self defense... If a guy with a gun is on my property and I shoot that person, there's no way I'd go to prison. Cops need to find out if I'm a guy who shoots mailmen for fun or if I'm someone who actually defended myself.
Cops arresting you does not mean you did something wrong. It means the cops need to check if you did something wrong.

The man seems genuine and sincere. I hold the same mindset. It would haunt me to ever have to defend myself in such a way, but I'd rather survive for my family. This type of situation calls for a primal instinct to survive, not a human selfishness to take a life.

As someone who has defended his land and family before its a shame when things come to this. This man has seen time and hardship and is genuinely a nice guy. You can hear the regret in his voice. And he did what he had to . stand your ground. If more people would stand ground against criminals it be a better place

This is one of the best uses of firearms by lawful gun owners that I've seen. This man did everything right, he was on his own property, inside his house, called 911, gave the intruder a chance to walk away. A very mature and responsible man. If anything he should be compensated for the horror and fear that he was put through. Being forced to take someone's life is never easy.
It's actually not though. Once the homeowner left his house to confront the guy he gave up all legal claims to be acting in self-defense.

Thank God this man was able to defend his life and property, and survive at least physically unharmed. We can't afford to be losing good people like this man.
This man did the right thing, and the only thing he could do in this situation. The police will never save you, and are always minutes away at best. Prosecutors that go after people like him who are simply defending themselves and their property from violent criminals are scum. Just another example that the system only cares about criminals, not law-abiding citizens.

No he didn't. Self-defence is not a valid argument for killing another person. Killing is morally wrong regardless of circumstance; it's why "use of deadly force" is a charge. The law has never favoured retribution taken into the hands of a sole citizen. Only the society as a whole can decide if a person does not conform to the laws and should be punished.

Honestly, very good response from the homeowner! He tried to reason and he tried to de-escalate the situation, when the intruder wouldn't listen and attempted to shoot the homeowner, the homeowner had to defend himself. Simply what needed to be done to keep himself safe
