It's hard to think of these familiar GM Utes as Retro...The oldest ones are only 20 years old and you can't go anywhere without seeing at least 2 of them. Nevertheless, it's a classic! Too bad they never made a two-tone.

Side note.... Every GM that was in the video is still on the road today. The best generation EVER!
They're so reliable that they are mostly now serving the personal transportation needs of the meth head community. They're mostly clapped out with AutoZone accent lighting strips and fake ventiports installed.

@Trevor Lahey I only know one wealthy person, in Boca Raton, big retirement destination. His company services medical equipment on site. He actually drove one of these too in the Florida heat. But yeah around my neck of the woods they're mostly all meth users driving them with expired paper tags. I know them when I see them.
Sold my 2000 Tahoe to a co-worker with 275k on the clock, he text me a pick when it hit 300k and it’s still going.

Drive into any major US city and you’ll still see countless examples of this generation of Tahoe/suburban still on the road.
Which is truly impressive seeing that the youngest models of these trucks are 15 years old now.
Blake Sexton NYPD still has some of these as patrol cars still and even the White House had some too
And many of them are STILL in really good condition!
In San Francisco some police stations still have few of this and the older version before this one like the 96 Tahoe is crazy how bulletproof this SUV are we have two Denali 2001 over 280k each still strong

And in Canada too, I'm from Toronto and I still see alot of them around, some in good shape and some unfortunately with serious rust on them.
The 2000-2006 generation was a home run imo.

Gas milage is just a little bit better for the LS engine, but the 5.7 Vortec has more low end tourge. I can't really decide if I should get a 1st or 2nd Gen Thaoe because all Reviews are to dam close in comparison.
Best gen suburban was from 73-91.

I have long said, GM needs to go find the engineers that designed these, pull them out of retirement and let them design their newest generation of trucks.
They were primarily designed by Wayne Cherry- the former Vice President of Design at GM. He worked for GM from 1962 until his retirement in 2004, designing countless models. He is still alive and 84 years old.
Yupp...todays GM pickups look like PETERBUILTS.from the front....way out our hand..........take me back.......
if they did that though, they'd stop selling new cars... they'd never break
I still see at least 50 of these a day. They're fantastic vehicles. Guzzle lots of gas, but man are they reliable. I'd love a Base model Yukon XL with cloth seats and a 3rd row.

These and the GMT-400 platform trucks are everywhere. Last good generations of Gm trucks.

So I chose wisely when I got my 2003 Sierra.
I love both my 400 and 800 trucks! But sadly I’m seeing less and less gmt400’s on the road. They’re probably getting a little dated for the average driver to want to keep them going. The gmt800’s seem like they’ll look modern for a while to come though!
The new ones are solid too my only complaint is the afm burning oil before time due 🤷🏻♂️

Oh really? I think they look a bit more rugged with the plastic door handles, and I'm a firm believer that the Z71 is the best looking trim from this generation, even though it does have the body colored door handles and mirrors.
I don't know what GM made these things out of, but there's still thousands of these things on the road to this day.
Pride and commitment.
I had an '03 Tahoe from new to 380k miles and sold it. Instead of buying new again I just bought a Suburban with 100k miles on it. What do the new ones offer over it for 65k more dollars?
Lots of pride, lots of those were built in my city, my family worked at the plant for 3 generations before me, our plant had the highest quality index which doesn’t hurt either. Seeing them in Presidential motorcades around the world brought a lot of pride to our little town.

@@electricianr2529 Janesville, Wisconsin, the plant made the suburbans from 92-09 and tahoe / yukon 95-09. There was also a plant in Mexico and texas making suburbans.
This is the best generation of those. I see a LOT still these days.
Still see these today on the roads. Still better looking than the recent GM SUV’s.
Oh yeah, the Tahoe/GMC/Escalade from this generation was by far the best one's ever.
Don’t forget the Suburban too. The 2007 one was good too, the 2015, and 2021 models are ugly as hell.
These GMT800s are still everywhere here in Bahrain, Saudia and Kuwait of all places. My uncle in fact used to own a Yukon from such generation before he replaced it with the now last gen GMC Yukon. Let's say it's proven to be far less reliable than the older one somehow.

Our 03 Tahoe has 277k miles. Still drives great!
Just guessing, you probably wouldn't take $3,500 for it, either. These trucks are expensive to buy used, but they still usually look pretty good.

I paid 2k for it and put a fule pump and water pump on it.... its 4x4
@@davek12 These things are cheap as can be what do you mean. I bought one for 1k to rip the engine out of. I also bought a 2002 Silverado Z71 with 260k for $500 (hell of a deal for sure). All within the past year.

Me Too. in 2004, he brought a 2000 GMC Yukon since he has gotten into an accident with his dodge caravan. Luckily he somehow survived.
I love these suvs from GM... A lot of tahoes, suburbans ans yukon's are on the road here in Norway, people here love them:) Me myself have a very nice chevy suburban 2002mod 8,1liters vortec.

My dad used to own a 2000 Yukon in 2004, and it held up pretty well. I’m glad I still have images of this vehicle’s existence….
i see at least dozens of this generation literally every day. my old boss was absolutely loaded and still daily drives the loaded suburban he bought new in ‘01.
These are still on the road, unfortunately the interior parts were incredibly bad.

Retro review of this--20 years ago??? My goodness I remember when these came out. I was 15 and I was excited looking through the brochures at every trim option speccing out my preferred Tahoe. Dang I'm getting old.
U were buying one at 15?
One nice thing about these vehicles is that you can change a headlight, front turn signal, or daytime running light bulb without tools! Very easy to do. Most vehicles today you have to remove the inner fender, bumper cover and grille to do the same change!
These look nicely rounded and aged so well. They are comfy, reliable, and can pull a small boat. I want a 4x4 GMC Yukon in red.
Man these things now days cost 2 and 3 times as much. Thats crazy.

All around the city I still see these 2000-06 SUV's. Running strong! We have an 02 4.8 regular cab that has absolutely no issue to this day. Unbelievable quality that was built then. Before the AFM EPA BS
The LM7 5.3L Vortec 5300 V8 was the BEST engine GM put into their light-duty trucks and SUV's... they started to get a bit less reliable once GM decided to equip them with the AFM (Active Fuel Management) System, but the LM7's are great. :)
Vincent D the 6.0 v8 was a great engine too and gm never put afm on them.
I prefer the 8.1 liter
@@user-wj9wq7mk4h The L18 Vortec 8100 unfortunately wasn't available in the 1/2-Ton models... only in HD models.
My aunt used to have a 2001 Suburban. She totaled it in 2017 with just over 250k miles. That was an extremely well built SUV, never gave her any major issues in 16 years.
What did she replace it with ?
@@TJC450 another brand new Suburban, which ironically has had a few recalls within the first year of ownership. One was for the brakes I believe.
Now that these are 20 years old and have like 285,000 miles on them...they're still expensive to buy used. Certainly C4C is somewhat to blame, but they're sturdy and can be kept running indefinitely.
A big reason is also their drivetrain. The 6.0 and up are extremely reliable and practical. Lots of mods available too.
I paid $2500 for mine a month ago. Drives like new, with 275k miles.
The only one thats expensive to buy now is the z71 version.
Got 300,250 on mine had an 08 5.3 and had to have the engine rebuilt at less than 150k

This generation was built through 06, this was in a real sweet spot between simple reliability and just enough useful technology- Although any engine can have a bad copy. 150k isn’t terrible, but there are many of this generation with 300+ on the original engine still driving.

Quality? Absolutely not. General Motors has always been very reliable. I will never understand why y'all constantly think 90s and 2000s General Motors was PEAK quality, when we all know the plastic used in those things were definitely cheap feeling.
These where the last suvs before gimmicks and unnecessary park assist lane change etc took over suvs that’s why u still have a lot of them around not a lot can go wrong clean ones will go up in value imo later on for sure ...
That's for sure. We just paid $12k for a completely rust-free 3/4 ton / 8.1L example, and I have zero regrets.
Some might say that's too expensive for a 20 year old truck, but it's less than 1/4 the price of any comparable new SUV from GM (which can't even be purchased in 3/4 ton form anymore), and will prove to be far more reliable than any of this new AFM garbage they're creating nowadays.
The GMT800 platform is the quintessential example of "they don't make'm like they used to".

My family we own two 2001 Denali and 2010 Escalade so far all three has been amazing the only thing I hate about the Escalade is afm burning the oil and I swap out twice the oil pressure sensor. But so far the rest has been solid
This generation is what I picture when I hear "Chevy Tahoe" or "GMC Yukon".

I always liked and still to this day, the GMC counterparts of the GM full size SUVs and pickup trucks. The GMC grill is nice and clean and not cluttered with the split grill and bowtie, like on the Chevrolet models. I would like to look out for a GMC Yukon Denali version, as that is the version I like from this generation of GM full size SUVs. Great upload, Motorweek.
I have a xl one with 108k miles. Love the 6.0 in that thing.
i always liked the chevy grill. hated when they changed the trucks in 03. the gmc in 03 looked better however.
These things still own the roads. The 99-06 GM full size Trucks and SUVs are the best trucks ever made. These trucks know reliability like the back of their hood :)
I have a Tahoe (here in Mexico was called Sonora), from 2001, and it is different in that it still was built (in the USA) with the old 350! Such a sweet motor! We are the first owners, and imho from the next generation onwards the trucks are a step backwards. The cylinder deactivation tecnology apparently gives lots of troubles. These 2000 generation is so reliable.
Still driving a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban 1500. Has 183k miles and after getting a few needed repairs done, I'm sure it'll run another 100k
Fun Fact : This was the only generation that had featured rear amber turn signals !! I

look up 90s Holden Suburban, those were made here in the states with euro spec lights and exported.

These are probably the height of GM's large SUV engineering. They just simply WORK! I still see many on the road, and many in decent condition. Oh boy, the Suburban 2500 was so under-appreciated! But yes, with this generation, GM built up a cult following that till this day maintains 60%+ of the full-size SUV market.

I have an 01 Tahoe 5.3 4x4 and I love it. 215,000 miles on the dash but its running great. I did a lot of maint. in the 2 years I've owned it as I plan to keep it as long as I can. New belt, tensioner, idler pulley. New AC belt and ac tensioner, new ac compressor and accumulator. New intake manifold gasket, new fuel pump, new water pump. New front and rear rotors and breaks. New bilstien shocks. New spark plugs. New stereo, speakers, replaced factory sub. And I had the transmission rebuilt 3 months ago. I got the Tahoe for $100 not running (fuel pump). Cosmetically it's in great shape and almost no rust on body and superficial surface rust on a solid frame. I have done all the installs and repairs to the vehicle myself aside from the transmission rebuild. $100 (purchase) + $1100 (parts and upgrades) + $2600 (transmission rebuild) and all in all I have a very sorted Tahoe for under 4k.

My 2000 2500 suburban is an incredible vehicle. My parents bought a 01 yukon xl new and still drive it today, i went down to AZ to find a rust free stock gmt800....the 4l80e, lq4 and legendary comfortable gmt800 interior is the best combo. I dont care that 15 mpg is a good tank, there's no vehicle id rather take anywhere. Unstoppable in snow, tons of ground clearance, room for stuff and people, quiet, comfortable, can tow anything, rides great, incredible turning radius...its the best SUV ever made.
2005 Tahoe z71 still daily drive. These generation GM trucks and SUVs are rock solid.
I had one that I sold at over 220k and it was still running and driving perfectly
I've seen this era of Tahoe/Yukon on the streets of South Carolina with lots of mods including huge rims.

I saw this and had to look at it. Made me miss my 2002 Tahoe so much. I kept it for 16 years and 235K and never ever gave it a tune up. It was the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. I finally traded it for a 2019 Traverse Premier which I really love, hope I can get half the great service from it as I did the Tahoe, thanks for this video

Man these are beautiful!! I had the previous model, a '93. Last time I checked, it was still running with 300,000+ miles on it. Always wanted one of these newer ones as they styling is so nice. It still retains the styling queues of the old, even though every inch of it is pretty much new. They were not very good on gas, but who cares. If you were getting one of these, gas wasn't a problem. Plus, these are indestructible.
I wish I could find a nice, low-mile one. I would buy it in a heartbeat.
My daily work truck is a RWD 5.3L 2004 Tahoe with 310k miles on it, and I'm picking up an AWD 6.0L 2005 Yukon Denali with 90k miles this weekend. These things are some of the most reliable tanks on the road. The Tahoe feels like a vehicle with 1/3rd the mileage. The powertrain, suspension, brakes, and chassis are all in strong shape. Only one out of four windows works and the only gauges still functioning are the speedometer, the odometer, and the fuel gauge... but the thing is a solid, dependable performer that has never let me down. That's why I'm buying another one while I still can! If only GM still knew how to build vehicles this good.

I had a 2002 Tahoe LT. I absolutely loved that SUV. After 10 years and over 200k, I finally had to let it go.
I used to have a 2000 Yukon XL with 200k miles in college. One of the most reliable vehicles I've owned!
Have a 99 Silverado myself, and my roommate has an 04 Suburban, these cars are great machines and literally my entire family drives a truck or SUV from this gen

Still see that body style Chevy and GMC's suv's everyday. My aunt has a 2006 GMC Yukon she bought it brand new in late 2005 and it currently has over 200k miles and it still runs without any issues. My aunt pampers her Yukon.
The Denali version + The Sierra of its time still breaks my neck when its still in complete stock form and original chrome. Better looking than the current trucks that hit $90K after options and out the door price.
Its going to be 2022 in less than 30 days and i see plenty of these everyday. Very reliable im thinking about getting one 💯
Have a mint condition Black 2004 Escalade ESV 6.0 AWD with 325K and still runs great !! Was a private limo in Dallas since new, So it was ALWAYS GM dealer maintained :) Paint has a mirror finish !!

2001 Suburban 1500 LT 5.3 with 325K miles, factory tow pkg has 3:73 and posi rear end 2 owner truck well kept straight body. STOLE IT for $1500 !! I use it to haul around car parts for my business :)
i bought a 2005 tahoe 5 years ago...been in plain view Texas from AZ ,California about 4 times,vegas about 14 times ,sholow AZ 2 times, el grand canyon, flagstaf, Payson, sholow, got 2000k and I do all maintenance...i love this trucks...and i still lots of them in the road...silverados,C10S ...love chevys

I’ve got a 2005 Yukon XL Denali, still in great shape after 15 years. More luxurious to me then the following year Denali, and man I sure love the 6.0 really makes that heavy bus move!
My 2006 GMC yukon 4x4 has been a great rig. With the 4.10 locking rear diff and my Dyno tune it moves out pretty quick for what it is.
Just bought an ‘02 from my neighbors mom. Great car and only 90,000 miles. Needed a little work, but it will keep going for years to come.

This was the last of the well built GM trucks. These things were the family haulers of choice when I was growing up and most of them are still rolling around today.
I still have an 01 XL that I tow a 5k lb travel trailer with. Still gets the job done with minimal problems. No way I would drop $60k+ on a new one. They just aren't made like this anymore

Finally! God I've been waiting for this one.
I love this generation so much when I was in 4th grade we got a 2001 suburban and we owned it for 4 years and sold it with over 300k miles and it still ran nice and smooth the next one we bought was a 2002 GMC Yukon XL and we've owned it for almost 7 years and we still have it to this day and along with that my mom now has a 2004 Chevy suburban that we bought back in April the 2000-2006 generation is a big part of our family
With 310,000 miles on my 2003 Suburban z71, I am still happy!🤠
Last month I had a 2005 Suburban z71 park next to mine and they had over 500,000 miles on theirs!🤔
My mom has one of these trucks, was the first car I ever drove. It recently crossed 189k miles and has not given up yet. They're bulletproof.

Hi I have a 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe it's my everyday transportation bought it brand new. I watch MotorWeek every Saturday, I always want to see the video where they test driving the Tahoe and the suburban.
Was looking for a larger interior than my little micro van mazda5.
I was amazed at how the seats in these were no larger than mine and the second row had no more room as well.
I ended up with an f150 crewcab and it's absolutely enormous in the front and second row compared to these.
The room inside these trucks remind me of my wifes 2003 envoy.
Does this mean we’ll get the 2002 Escalade review? Please? Lol.
We had one from 70k miles until 220k miles. Sold it still running perfectly.
@@kirbyswarp Man, that's great to hear. I just picked up an 04 Escalade with only 67k orig miles on it! Like new. I can probably drive this thing for the rest of my life if I wanted to.
We got ours 10 years ago with 80,000 miles and we ended with 279,904. Best car ever, will forever cherish the 02-06 Escalades!
Yess, I need the Escalade version now. I also need myself a second generation Escalade (2002-2006) to sit pretty next to my 2002 Chevy Tahoe. I'd love to get my hands on an Escalade to make it look like new all original.

I had a '03 Tahoe I drove to 380k miles on my own before selling it. I didn't buy new again. Instead I found an '04 Suburban with 100k miles for $4500 and am very pleased as well as expecting another 300k miles. Talk about bang for your buck.
My mom has an 03 Yukon. It has 212k miles on it and still running strong. It’s also garage kept which means the exterior and interior still look new. She doesn’t want to get rid of it since all the new vehicles have electronics and gadgets that intimidate her.
If you guys did a review of the Yukon Denali/Escalade of this era, I'd love to see it. I'm very curious what you thought of the AWD system when new. I bought one because I wanted the 6.0 cheap, but the on-road character of the AWD is what made me fall in love with my '03 XL Denali.

I have an 02 Tahoe bought from the dealership would not trade it for anything. My wife drove it for 20 years, we just bought a 22 Yukon, what a difference in size.
I owned a 2004 Chevy Tahoe. Excellent vehicle, loved the 5.3l vortec engine, lots of power and pretty reliable. The only reason I got rid of it in 2018 was because of the rust (underneath, everything was getting rusted out. A sad fact of life in New England).
Aaah, My Dad Used to own this vehicle, same colour, same body style, and it was a GMC Yukon. Sometimes I miss this car. I remember my dad went to another house to go talk with someone and me and my brother were in this car. We were just playing around and then i touched the light, and it wouldn’t turn off, but my dad sold it later that year and got a Ford freestar.
