Classic SNL! 😊👍🏽 Jerry Mathers and Tony Dow pulled that off really well and Bill Murray complimented their dialogue by playing it straight. That was hilarious.😊👍🏾
This made me SMILE! I never ever saw this b4! The fact that Tony and Jerry agreed to do this showed they had great senses of humor and could take a joke. It also shows how well they KNEW their characters. They fell right back into “Wally” and “Beav” ha.
But of course, “June Cleaver” did the famous jive-talking cameo, in “Airplane” ( around the same year ) . And that was even MORE shocking-yet, HILARIOUS!
I remember watching this SNL episode back in 1980. Not included in this clip is Jane Curtin saying to Bill Murray, "Bill, weren't you a little hard on the boys?"
I was from a broken home and first saw Leave It To Beaver decades later in reruns. I really had no concept about life like they had, but I really did model myself after Wally.
Leave It To Beaver aired like 30 years before I was born but I watched like twenty episodes last year and was really impressed with how well it holds up. The tone and timing of its jokes feel very modern. I’d much rather watch that than most modern family sitcoms
I was born the same year as Jerry Mathers. Needless to say, I watched every episode as it was on our family's favorite list. There were only 3 national stations and perhaps 3 locals. Yet ... there was so much more to watch. Sounds weird, but it's true. Sitcoms usually aired 30 - 40 new episodes per year. BUT NO VIDEO RECORDERS! My favorite take away was Veronica Cartwright who played Violet Rutherford in the Beaver. She went on to Alien fame. Her sister, Angela Cartwright stared in the first Lost In Space sitcom.
Leave It To Beaver dealt with common, timeless problems ... whereas lots of modern shows are trying to hook onto some political point or cultural fad of the moment. A kid getting his head caught in a fence and feeling embarrassed will always be relatable ... and we all grew up knowing some kid like Eddie Haskell!
My youth right there... I used to tell my big brother "I wish you were Wally Cleaver!!" when he was mean to me.. now they're both gone, my brother and Wally.😔💔 Thank you Tony.

This show went off the air just before I was born in 1963, but my older siblings ranged from 11 to 17. Of course I saw reruns in the 70's. It was a gentler, simpler time. RIP Mr. Dow.
It was NOT a "gentler, simpler time." TV sitcoms back then ignored the horrible things going on in the world just like they do now. In 1963, police in the South were fighting civil rights protesters with dogs and firehoses. Governor George Wallace tried to keep the University of Alabama from integrating, stating "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever." In Vietnam, where war was raging, a monk burned himself alive in protest of the government attacking Buddhist protesters with liquid chemicals. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. The KKK bombed a church in Birmingham. A newly-constructed dam caused a landslide that killed 2,000 people in Italy.
