The reason why Smithfield became so big is based on the fact that most pigs are raised and slaughtered in Virginia and North Carolina, so it made sense for the processing and packing companies to be in those states. Hotdogs specifically are byproducts of other pork processing. Smithfield is better known for their hams than hotdogs.
Smithfield was bought out by a multinational corporation based in China. Happened right before COVID. Some of their products are slaughtered here, sent to there for processing and then imported back here.

I recently moved from Alabama to Arizona, and let me tell y'all about the "Sonoran hot dog" they make here. It's a bacon-wrapped hot dot in a Mexican-style roll, and topped with beans, onion, tomato, mayo, mustard, and jalapeno salsa. Hebrew National were always my top choice until they became 40% more expensive than Nathan’s. I always had Nathan’s ranked as my 1 B, so that’s the only dog I eat now.
Hebrew National must Auvergne changed their recipe in recent years bc they suddenly tasted much saltier and it just wasn't working with my usual chili/mustard/onion topping selection. However, it did inspire me to use Cole slaw to sweeten it up a little and that has since become the only way I'll eat a hot dog now

I have not had a good hotdog since moving away from PA. Also I grew up with potato buns, they were usually some of the cheapest and tastiest as they were locally made. Hebrew National and Nathan’s are the best I’ve had outside of local Berks & Kunzler I grew up with. Honestly the best were from the butcher as they’d use the best and freshest scraps for hot dogs and burgers like a rib eye burger was amazing and surprisingly not that expensive as it was scraps so it would’ve gotten tossed otherwise.
Toasted pretzel buns or toasted Hawaiian buns improving a grilled meat (be it hot dogs, hamburgers, or sandwich) is a hill I'm willing to die on. Cheap buns don't hold up when wet, and then you're just holding a soggy mess of toppings, condiments, and sadness.
You deserve a medal, or at the very least a hug, for sitting outside in this southern heat and making this video. Kudos to you my dude. I had to take a shower after bringing the cans to the curb
Matt you should receive a medal for bravery eating any hot dog with no condiments whatsoever. The ones with the strange marks on them used to come with a secret decoder ring but kids stopped sending for the ring because the only message there was said eat more hot dogs. And the low end dogs don't burn them too much or neighbors might think they're burnt offerings and even the dogs won't eat them. Stay cool and stay hydrated everyone.
My mom babysat a kid that claimed she only liked Oscar Meyers. She refused to eat any other brand. So my mom did what any sane adult would. She saved tge Oscar Meyers package & put the lunch meat or hotdogs that the rest of us were eating in it. The kid was none the wiser & ate it without any complaints.
We use the Bar S, Sunnyland and Gwantley for fishing for catfish and crabbing!! Definitely not to eat!😂😂😂 Dietz & Watson or Nathan's is what we get when we make chili cheese dogs.
1) Chicago Dogs are admittedly an acquired taste, but I really enjoy the sport peppers and the nuclear waste relish. 2) I'd love to see a Vienna Beef/Nathan's/Hebrew National/Sabrett cage match, with all the Wal-Mart dogs pushed to the side.

Best hotdog I have had recently is the Costco ones, NOT the big ones you get at the food court, but their smaller hotdog in the multi pack. Has the flavor, snap, juicy, all the things. Thanks Matt for checking these out. Stay cool!!
I think it's funny that the Sunnyland brand is also made by Smithfield (like Gwaltney, Nathans and Eckrich) but if you look at their brands page, it's conveniently absent. Even Smithfield doesn't want to claim them.
As an Arizonan we have insanely good Mexican food and it is from 90 to 120° outside three out of the four seasons. So we basically have two seasons, which are hot and hotter. Keep in mind there’s also a 75-97% humidity index. If you thought it was hot in the south try going to the grocery store in the middle of July in Arizona.
I did not expect to laugh so violently when that bug came at you like you offended it's honor. Wow my sides hurt. Also, you are a champion for sitting out in that sunny heat for this.
I was stationed in Norfolk for eight years, my trips to Smithfield were.....not stinky. That said, I know that anyone that did the tour didn't eat pork products for a while!
Not quite a hot dog, but Kroger had a flash sale on the Johnsonville sausages in Queso flavor. Genuinely one of the most amazing things I’ve ever eaten.
As a native Floridian who moved to chicago, Chicago dogs are a revelation. Best hot dog in the world. You got ketchup and a tomato, a whole pickle you can just eat as an appetizer. I love those vinegary flavors on my dog, and the relish and diced onions balances perfectly the sweetness of the ketchup. No lie chicago has elevated the hot dog for me.
If you had ketchup on that dog, it absolutely was NOT Chicago style. Mustard is the only sauce that goes on a Chicago dog, and there are a lot of locals that will fight you if that mustard is anything other than standard yellow mustard.
@@matthewwilliams2093 I started to reply the same thing before I saw this. I've eaten A LOT of chicago dogs and ketchup is not one of the things on them. I asked a friend of mine who has a PhD in meat science (yes, it's a real thing) why Ballpark franks plumped when you cook them. Her speciality at the time was lunchmeat, so she didn't know the answer, but asked around, and her eventual answer was "You don't want to know." Fortunately, I was never a fan of those.
Hmm, must’ve been a marketing ploy to turn an oops into a positive!?! I love hot dogs, but really struggle to eat them sometimes, just because of what’s in them.
BallPark has had that Slogan Forever and, when, I was a kid at the time when, they came out in the 70s we switched to them, at the time they were the better hotdogs but, the all beef Hebrew National Hotdogs are the best, after eating them, you can’t go back to mediocre hotdogs that are filled with all those fillers and, who all knows what is in them. I agree those hotdogs taste just down right gross!
Yeah barS and Gwantley are pretty bad. Only flavor is a weird aftertaste and they have a bologna texture. Sunnylands are MEH. Best tasting dogs I tasted were the CONECUH little chief Frank's.
I use to move a lot and I unfortunately had the horrible luck of ending up living close to many different types of processing plants: a paper mill, a chicken plant, a plant that made hotdogs, and a dogfood plant are just some of the worst. The paper mill was by far the worst and the dogfood plant was a close second. After being close to the paper mill and the dogfood plant the other two were tolerable. Still stinky though.
There was a bubblegum factory down the road from where I went to college. It was located in a dip in the road (too small to be a proper valley) that kept the sweet stink contained, but when you were driving through it - hoo boy. I can’t imagine living in one of the houses in that same trough.
We lived in Maine for a few years. The hot dogs there are called “red snappers” because they’re red (pinkish before you cook ‘em) and the skin snaps. And the buns were sliced through the top like a lobster roll. It was weird. Of course some Mainers called baked beans grits, so what do you expect?
Smithfield VA has the number one producer of Ribs and Hams in America in residence. Check your grocery store you will find "Smithfield" brand Hams in both regular and spiral cut as well as vacuum sealed uncooked ribs(if you buy ribs at walmart they will be smithfield or hatfield 90% of the time). They also have the "Hatfield" factory in Smithfield and Hatfield are the second largest producer of hams and ribs in the Nation. I am not surprised that a lot of hot dog companies are having their hotdogs made there. considering all the pigs and cows that are slaughtered there.
It's going to be over 100 degrees here in Oregon today. After watching you in this video I am comforted to know that I'm not the only one who is suffering, lol.
I've come to the conclusion after many Bless Your Ranks, that Matt would have no problem with summer dinner at my house. Nathan's, a salad with Olive Garden ranch, and Milo's Sweet tea.
I used to think the same thing about a Chicago dog until I lived in Chicago for three years. Now it's right behind a Carolina dog as my absolute favorite. I put celery salt on every hot dog now just because of it. Amazing hot dog. Best hot dogs you can buy in the store: 1: Snake River Wagyu Dogs(Harris Teeter sells these sometimes if you have one) 2: Nathan Angus Beef Franks(It has to be Angus Beef. Huge difference in flavor) 3: Hebrew National Honorable Mention: Brightleaf
We have Smithfield meat processing plant in our town (Grayson,Ky) where they do package hot dogs. I can confirm the stink factor (at times) is off the charts. The smell would knock a dog off a gut wagon.
My dad used to use that phrase about the dog and the gut wagon. He would be 113 years old this year if he was still with us. My mother had to explain what a gut wagon was. She would be 111 now.
Having delivered to this plant in Grayson KY, I can attest to the fact that in the dead of night while hurtling down Highway 9 that the smell does indeed mix in with the “smoke” that gives this area its nickname of the Smoky Mountains, now mind you when your on the actual property and they tell ya that you want the 2nd delivery bay and that if you get to the rendering pond you’ve gone too far they DEFINITELY mean that ok?!!!!.

40 years ago I worked at the Red Food Store in Rossville, GA, and this guy came in every two weeks and bought a case of Gwaltney Great Dogs. One time I made a comment about how those must be some really tasty hotdogs, and he said, “There’s no way I’d put them things in my mouth, I buy ‘em for my dawgs…a pack of those is cheaper than a can of Tony!” So I’ve never been brave enough to try one…but I hear they’re pretty grainy because of the amount of cereal in them.
I love a good dog with a great mustard but I love extra toppings! I grew up with TX chili-cheese dog but fell in love with the LA danger dog, NY style with relish, a WA style with creamcheese and caramelized onions, and the Sonoran style from Sonora&AZ. I usually get Nathans as well ^_^ good choice!
Good stuff, Matt! I agree with you about Nathan’s hotdogs, but you should try Hebrew National Coney Island style hotdogs. The best “pop” and flavor, plus, they exceed bun length (thus Coney Island). Also, I’m not from Virginia, but I’ve visited Smithfield on business a couple of times, and I can say “No stink”. On the contrary, when you’re coming into town, all you can smell is the aroma of cured ham.

Common signs of heatstroke include: a distinct _lack_ of sweat, despite the heat; high body temperature; hot, red skin; a quick but strong pulse; nausea; headache; fatigue; dizziness; weakness; confusion; and delirium. Also, I know "Smithfield ham" is a thing, so yeah, once they send out yet another truck full of their famous top-shelf hams, they probably _do_ actually have a lot of assorted pork trimmings they don't have much use for. They'll probably pay _you_ to open a new sausage factory there as long as you'll provide your own pig scrap slingin' shovels.
Smithfield and Gwaltnew used to be separate companies and were located across the street from each other. at lunch time the workers would line both sides of the streets and yell at each other. as stated below they are now owned by a single company. Smithfield is famous for hams

I live near Smithfield, VA, and it consists of a quaint downtown and historic district and upscale golf communities. I don't recall smelling the hog farm and slaughterhouse but vaguely remember the smell outside of town off of the highway. Smithfield mostly is known for ham and bacon, and I had no idea that the hot dog brands, other than Gwaltney, were made there. In fact, Gwaltney is what is served at most ballparks, little league and professional, around here. Honestly, I prefer Hebrew National and you'll probably have to take away my Southern card for it. Maybe you'll give it back because I enjoyed a scrumptious slaw dog, with homeade chili and homemade coleslaw, on 4th of July. Still thinking about it. It was that good!
Love watching your videos. And when you said something about Smithfield reminded me of all the companies that are no longer American-owned. Smithfield is owned by China now

The fact that we're talking about the "snap" for an uncased hot dog is really sad. We need to get this man to the midwest to enjoy a natural cased hot dog stat! One of the most disappointing things moving from the midwest to Tennessee is naturally cased hot dogs are just not a thing here.

I thought that was normal for everyone. Nope. Apparently, neither is sweet pickle relish! Gee Thanks, Mom. 😏 They don’t even taste right to me without these basics as the foundation. Oh well, WHATEVER!!! I can’t eat them anymore, but it sure does bring back fond memories of outside suppers on summer evenings in the shade on a quilt with a breeze blowing…with sweet iced tea to wash it all down. Yum 😋 🤤 Thanks for the memories, Matt! 😊
The best hot dogs have a natural casing. Also, there was a butcher shop in Scranton PA that had the best dogs anywhere, they made them and bologna too, when I was a kid. No Hebrew National?!? I guess all beef dogs weren’t part of this contest. Also shocked to hear that there are hot dogs worse than Gwaltney.
Hebrew National are phenomenal hot dogs! I am disappointed that they werent on there too! Nathans are good as well, but just FYI, Nathans were the all beef ones.
However, it did inspire me to use Cole slaw to sweeten it up a little and that has since become the only way I'll eat a hot dog now
Yeah I was waiting for Hebrew nationals.
Hebrew National is worth the extra cost. I used to buy them at Costco and think the Kirkland Signature brand is the same.

This is way better than the current state of the hot dog competition. I love how we got almost 30 minutes of quality commitment to the research.

The ones in the food court don't suck.
Kirkland hot dogs are amazing. They are the same ones they serve at the food court. They just serve the larger version.
We only buy Kirkland all beef hotdogs. Not the jumbo ones though.
You should post a close up of the packaging for those sunnyland hotdogs. I bet the ingredients proudly proclaim "Made from real Animals"

You sir have lost your southern card.
I imagine it has a lot to do with heat turning the water into steam.
A regional brand I love is Bright Leaf Hotdogs… made by Carolina Packers in Smithfield, NORTH CAROLINA!
