Calling Hidden Valley the standard 0 on the ranch scale was the most accurate thing in this video to me. Hidden Valley is ranch and you can either be better than or worse than Hidden Valley.
That is pretty hard to be worse than Hidden Valley, it hasn't been good since the 90's when they started messing with the recipe and steadily making it worse and worse. I honestly gave up on most bottled Ranches and just make my own.
One time my college roommate and I were in paris and he described ranch to some British chicks by saying its 3rd in importance only to the constitution and bacon
I studied abroad for a semester in England and when I found out there was no ranch dressing there and no one had ever heard of it up there I was a bit upset. Also, in the UK Doritos Ranch is called Doritos Coolers Original (or maybe Original Coolers). When a British friend said he had no idea what that meant, I told him in the US it was called Ranch. When he asked what Ranch was, the only thing I could say was it's a type of salad dressing/dip.

Back in the day, Ranch was not available in bottles and you couldn't order it. It had to be made with a packet of seasonings and buttermilk. It was a huge treat for my mom to "make" it. Finally, it exploded onto the scene. I've had them all but Ken's is now the only one for me.😊
what's funny is in my adulthood the things I eat ketchup on has decreased to mainly hamburgers, hot dogs, meatloaf (not baked on...ew!).Ii don't eat it on fries, onion rings, fish, etc.

As a transplanted southerner who has been living in the midwest for a decade. I can absolutely say that ranch is loved in the midwest in a whole other way. It's something else.

The ranch I use all the time is found at Walmart, although I've never been down south so I can't say it's at every Walmart. It is called Litehouse (Homestyle kind) and it is usually found near the carrots and broccoli.
Litehouse is far and away the superior ranch! I'll use shelf-stable ranch as an *ingredient* (like breading chicken, or something), but if I'm dipping, it's Litehouse! Sam's Club has a huge 32oz bottle for LESS THAN the price of the 20oz at Walmart ($5.28)

Wishbone was like the forerunner to Martha Speaks, a PBS show where a dog eats alphabet soup and is able to speak. I saw a little Wishbone, but I grew up more with Martha Speaks. A good MS episode is the one where the elderly woman neighbor goes onto Antiques Roadshow expecting a huge evaluation on her antique, but it came out to only five dollars.
I grew up on hidden valley ranch. My parents bought it all the time so did my siblings. About a year ago I deserved Ken's and I haven't bought HV since.
I must say, having moved to Australia for a semester, the thing I miss most is American ranch (Aussie ranch is too sweet and runny). This has been a nice reprieve from my sadly ranchless life
This was fantastic! Ranch is my go-to dressing. We have 3 different kinds in the fridge right now - Ken's, Olive Garden & Tony Chachere's (they make an excellent Cajun ranch that really adds a little bit of flavor to a salad).
If you have Ingles grocery stores near you, they have a ranch in the refrigerated dressing section called Chef GW Clisso. The Mountain Ranch is my favorite but they also make a few other flavors
Thanks to you, I now have a gallon of Milo's Sweet Tea in the fridge at all times. Looks like Olive garden will be joining it. BTW, I live in Washington State.
I love Milo's unsweetened so much. And a Southerner friend of mine told me she drinks their sugar-free sweet tea under doctor's orders and it works for her old-school cravings. Now that's a compliment.
Their Parmesan with Peppercorn Dressing is delicious! I make chicken parmesan pita wraps with it! I can only find it at Publix (in the South), so I stock up during BoGos!

If all you've ever tried was the bottled stuff.. Can't blame you for not being into ranch. Most bottled ranches went down hill fast around the 90's, made at home is by far the best. (Why people think it's hard or time consuming is beyond me, you can make a batch in a few minutes)
@@SilvaDreamsLongevity of the Dressing is a valid concern with Homemade. You can have a store-bought bottle of perhaps Hidden Valley or other Shelf-Stable brand, be in your fridge for over a year and still be fine. Or even unopened bottles in the pantry for 2-3 years and they will be perfectly fine. With Homemade the most longevity you can get (unless a mostly Vinegar based dressing) is maybe a week at best.
Olive garden is the main ranch I use for my salads because it is SO good. I love it on other stuff too but I feel like it's the best ranch for salad/vegetables cause it compliments SO well.
As a fellow Midwesterner I can agree that we own ranch out of anywhere in the US we put it on everything and we take our ranch very seriously so we own it here and back off we own ranch as a dressing 😌 And also we do season our food we season it with corn 😂 (p.s. love your videos)
You were already high up on my list of favorite TH-camr’s, when you said you were a Ken’s family you made it to the top of my list 😁 you need to try the buttermilk ranch, it’s even thicker.
We usually swap between hidden valley and Ken's steakhouse, the other night I tried mixing some Ken's buttermilk into a little bit of sour cream and it was very good. Not as oily and thick as ranch straight from the bottle, and I didn't have to go through all the effort of buying expensive ranch powder to make my own. (I tried making ranch dressing from scratch once and my eggs would not emulsify with the oil for the mayonnaise base.)

You know what absolutely delights me in your videos... well, one of the great many things that delight me in your videos... is you saying "thow" instead of "throw." My dad's family has always done that, especially in the context of "thow up." It makes me smile every time. ^_^
I’m assuming part of the challenge was to stay on the salad dressing aisle. If he could have gone to the produce section “lifehouse” or “litehouse” would have been TOTALLY superior to anything else! I buy mine at Sam’s and put it on. EVERYTHING! I think I tried Olive Garden and it was just okay in comparison. I won’t buy anything lower than that.
Litehouse truly is the best ranch if you aren't going to make your own. I won't eat any of the shelf-stable bottled ones anymore after trying it. They all taste kinda...stale.

I agree with what you said about Hidden Valley ranch but one day at my local most dollar general and saw hidden valley Buttermilk ranch and thought , gee, that's how to do homemade! So I tried it and wow what a difference! Now that is all I buy when I want ranch dressing
We are a Kens family too!! Their honey mustard is the best and their creamy Italian is perfect for an Italian wrap. Oh and I do enjoy the ranch as well.
Shout out to the family restaurant down the street from you, who's ranch is the gold standard that all other ranches aim to be. You know which place. We all have one.
I too have searched for the perfect ranch. The best was at this steak place in my home town found out it was Ken's but there is a difference between that and the restaurant version. The best current ranch dressing is litehouse its only in the refrigerator section. Hidden valley was my go to but really what you want is the powder and mix it with plain unflavored yogurt that's what I grew up on besides ranch makes everything better.
Ranch is Californian, as I recall. Prior to that the rest of us had buttermilk dressing which was pretty much ranch till Hidden Valley exploded. Hidden Valley is the best when you make it from scratch.
Best ranch comes in the refrigerated section in a little tub. Manzanita's or Manzana's, something like that. Second is Olive Garden. You're not putting Manzana's on a salad though. That's straight up for pizza and veggie dipping. Edit: saw it in another comment. MARZETTIS FOR THE WIN Oh and if you're gonna have a fair ranch dipping contest it's gotta be pizza crust. You can have a store-bought bottle of perhaps Hidden Valley or other Shelf-Stable brand, be in your fridge for over a year and still be fine. Or even unopened bottles in the pantry for 2-3 years and they will be perfectly fine.
With Homemade the most longevity you can get (unless a mostly Vinegar based dressing) is maybe a week at best.

Olive garden is the main ranch I use for my salads because it is SO good. I love it on other stuff too but I feel like it's the best ranch for salad/vegetables cause it compliments SO well.
As a fellow Midwesterner I can agree that we own ranch out of anywhere in the US we put it on everything and we take our ranch very seriously so we own it here and back off we own ranch as a dressing 😌
And also we do season our food we season it with corn 😂 (p.s. love your videos)

You were already high up on my list of favorite TH-camr’s, when you said you were a Ken’s family you made it to the top of my list 😁 you need to try the buttermilk ranch, it’s even thicker.
We usually swap between hidden valley and Ken's steakhouse, the other night I tried mixing some Ken's buttermilk into a little bit of sour cream and it was very good. Not as oily and thick as ranch straight from the bottle, and I didn't have to go through all the effort of buying expensive ranch powder to make my own. (I tried making ranch dressing from scratch once and my eggs would not emulsify with the oil for the mayonnaise base.)

Matt giving Golden Corral advice was on point 6:15 . Has Matt done an overview of buffets? A ranking would be good, but something a bit more deep, where he gives similarly robust pointers and crucial life advice, would be welcome.
If Golden Corral did a ranch fountain with freshly-cut veggies and wings around it, I'd be in heaven. I might do all of my eating from that alone until dessert.

I’m assuming part of the challenge was to stay on the salad dressing aisle. If he could have gone to the produce section “lifehouse” or “litehouse” would have been TOTALLY superior to anything else! I buy mine at Sam’s and put it on. EVERYTHING! I think I tried Olive Garden and it was just okay in comparison. I won’t buy anything lower than that.
Litehouse is my go -to, but will use a shelf dressing for things like breading chicken.
Litehouse truly is the best ranch if you aren't going to make your own. I won't eat any of the shelf-stable bottled ones anymore after trying it. They all taste kinda...stale.

Those all suck! The best ranch is Primal Kitchen Ranch Dressing. Walmart carries it. Olive Garden Ranch has harmful and unnecessary ingredients.

I agree with what you said about Hidden Valley ranch but one day at my local most dollar general and saw hidden valley Buttermilk ranch and thought , gee, that's how to do homemade! So I tried it and wow what a difference! Now that is all I buy when I want ranch dressing

Shout out to the family restaurant down the street from you, who's ranch is the gold standard that all other ranches aim to be. You know which place. We all have one.
We have a place in town that makes their own ranch. That with their chicken tender meal is amazing.
I too have searched for the perfect ranch. The best was at this steak place in my home town found out it was Ken's but there is a difference between that and the restaurant version. The best current ranch dressing is litehouse its only in the refrigerator section. Hidden valley was my go to but really what you want is the powder and mix it with plain unflavored yogurt that's what I grew up on besides ranch makes everything better.

Ranch is Californian, as I recall. Prior to that the rest of us had buttermilk dressing which was pretty much ranch till Hidden Valley exploded. Hidden Valley is the best when you make it from scratch.

Best ranch comes in the refrigerated section in a little tub. Manzanita's or Manzana's, something like that. Second is Olive Garden. You're not putting Manzana's on a salad though. That's straight up for pizza and veggie dipping.
