Every now and then because I’m researching some gear I just bought, or something, an Indy Mogul, vid will pop up in my recommendations, and I’ll go, “Oh yeah I remember those guys, let’s see what they’re up to”, and take a trip down memory lane.
I'll never leave them cause I trust them to come back. They're in an open TH-cam relationship
Indy Mogul inspired me 14-15 years ago when I was just a child. The original host was hosting (Eric Beck), and they were doing prop videos at the time, and I loved it before I even knew I would (or anyone could) end up with filmmaking. Can’t say I’ve been following them all along, but I’m always happy to stumble upon them and find out they’re still making videos. I’m a little confused about the fact that they haven’t posted a video in over a year, though.

Man I grew up with these guys, I recently found my old TH-cam account from 2007 and went down a rabbit hole. Idk where they went but I miss them

Strongly disagree with the c70 choice as a c200 user. I’m buying the Komodo for weddings after being frustrated with canons cinema line up.

Yeah....Arri dominates the color science field. At a certain point though, a good camera preferably won’t have a “look” and will just give you the purest representation of what it captured. Red is certainly doing better in that field than they used to, they just need to nail Arri’s skin tones.

Great honest review. So many on comment threads seem to care about sensor specs - what about real world usage, convenience, handling, those begin to be important when you get busy with work and don’t have all day to pull shadows in your bedroom. The C70 looks amazing. And I’m still shooting on the original C300 and I still love the images from it !
watching this now and I am so glad I got the c70 instead of the Komodo for my work. The new RAW feature and other updates on the C70 certainly has make this camera a beast for all the indie shooters out there.

I am just getting started shooting video more seriously and this was very helpful. I shot with Canon DSLRs for years and was leaning towards the C70 and this comparison helped solidify my decision on what to buy when the time comes. Thank you!

Would love to see the Z Cam F6 added to this comparison! Having it next to the Komodo really shows how great of a camera it is.
The F6 is a great low light performer with it's analog gain, has a slightly larger than FF 4:3 sensor, can do 4k120 in ProRes 422, has tons of interchangeable locking mounts, lasts 3-4 hours with a single NP-F970 battery, a color science I prefer to work with, and just a generally lovely IQ imo.

I remember the c300...went into showcase atlanta (before they shut down) and checked it out alongside some 50-60k lenses. Was amazing. But more amazing how far we've come....especially for $5500.

A really good breakdown. Very similar prices, but completely different use cases.
My relationship with Indy Mogul is basically like mine with women. They keep leaving then coming back. I miss them and accept them back thinking they’ll stay but they never do.

Always love your stuff Dave, it got me laughing when you so bluntly but sincerely asked us to be your internet friends 😅 You got an IG follow from me. Although seriously, you doing okay out there? Lose a few people in quarantine? Just being awkward and checking in to make sure because I've been there and we gotta watch out for each other.
Dave convinced me to pull the trigger on the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II, and I'm very happy with it...although there are some things I would change if I could. It's surprisingly strong for photo and video, especially for someone like me who just does it as a hobby. I'm certainly not in the cinema camera target market, although I might be interested in tracking down an old, used one at some point.
With regard to the C70, I think Canon could make a mint by selling a GOOD electronic viewfinder for this camera. I know you can buy things like the Zacuto Gratical HD, but if Canon sold something that was good but at a lower price point, I think people would snap it up.
While this is a great comparison, I think that many reviews and videos overlook how crazy and important it is that Canon has developed their own dual gain sensor. I mean for Pete's sake the ALEV III works with a similar technology and let's be honest the Alexa is the industry standard. Canon has stepped up their game big time, I cannot wait to see DGO sensors appear on cheaper cameras too.
People need to stop talking about lowlight capabilities and start talking about lighting subjects correctly more.
Exactly, how cinema is meant to be. In cinema they use native iso, and sometimes some db extra
I agree lighting is super important obviously, but it's nice to know about low light for event work where often you just have to deal with whatever lighting is there and it's handy to have sometimes. Not that you'd use a Komodo for event work tho.
Single man crews though. Plus not everything is inside. Low light is more important outside. If you have a full crew to rig lights, you’re probably renting something much better like an ARRI.
Not everyone has to, or can, worry about studio lighting. Times are changing. And technology is allowing more people to shoot in more darkness.

Our church is looking to upgrade video gear in the next year and I’ve been floating between the C70 and Komodo, glad to see this review, I’m settling on recommending a set up of C70s

Why not bmpcc4k, because then you can hook them up to a atem mini pro and control them, or the pana bgh1, for remote control as well

I shot a bit on the C70 last week. I found the formfactor a bit clunky. The handgrip doesn't really allow for confortable hip-shooting like the other C-cameras do, and the placement of the DISP button felt weird compared to the C200 where it's on the screen. I'm sure you can get used to this pretty quickly, but those were my initial thoughts.

Do you notice the Deity 4 Duo favors one side of the stereo over the other? Mine seems to have much louder input from the left and low gain from the right.

I owned the original C300 and put 7,000 hours on that bad boy. That camera made me close to a million bucks, loved it. I didn’t love when Canon dropped the price from 15k to 6-7k over night. That was a bummer.

I wanted to ask how you feel about users of the C70 with RF lenses being unable to get the full frame look as opposed to those with EF glass & the speed booster?
I find it curious why Canon put out an RF mount cine camera that effectively disadvantages those using native RF glass, by not being able to get the equivalent full frame (without working around this by shooting wider etc). I moved to RF (from Sony) recently, and find this strange to miss out RF users. Would love to know your thoughts on this! 👍🏼

Thanks for this. I’m a Fuji user but want to step up from my XT3 to a dedicated cinema cam for video. It’s quite a bewildering range of choice. I’m keen on the cinema look and am torn between Super 35 -which essentially is APSC by another name and full frame, just between the two you have reviewed here the Komodo and Canon C70, which would you advise. I will probably want to do some documentary work but also some landscape and low light filming.

I keep trying to convince myself to buy a non-Canon camera but their cinema line just works too perfectly for our style of shooting. I think we will add a C70 soon.
Interesting. I have a a7s3 and c200 but I’m selling the c200 to get a red Komodo because I really don’t care for canon colors and feel like it’s holding me back compared to the a7s3.
@@jamietomas1550 We absolutely love our Canon cinema cameras and have been using them exclusively for like 8 years. The C100MKII is the best run and gun camera I've ever used. It has everything you need built in with quick and easy access. We use the C200 for more controlled shoots and it works great for us. Ordering a C70 this week. I'm only loyal to Canon cinema cameras because I can't find other cameras that work better for our purposes. Reds have the best color but not by so much that it eliminates all other cameras. I'm sure you will love your Komodo, it looks like an incredible camera! I wish it had the features we need.
@@OhanaFilms yeah i get that. They are easy to work with and have features that the Komodo doesn’t. The main thing is built in nd but canon Ef with nd solves that. I’d choose the fx6 over c70 but I have become more partial to Sony recently.

Where’s Indy Mogul?
There's a still mode in the C70 for grabbing a frame in a jpg to help you either pick your video thumbnail or to organize your files etc. Look for it in the menu and set the image size based on your recording format and it will auto save photos to your sd slot B.
