@@Joey_Helms I started do that on my social media channels a while back. I would see footage and wonder what lens and aperture was being used. I hope those types of detail sharing becomes more mainstream.
I've been part of the RED community, using their ecosystem, for a long time. I think this is the most concise, no BS, just what you need to know, video I have ever seen for end to end work flow with RED. I'll integrate some of your tips into my workflow. It's always encouraging to learn a thing or two from a new RED user. Great work! Also, you are a talented DP. The example footage in this video is gorgeous!
Agreed also. SO glad I stumbled onto his videos! Someone does needs to do a real series about accurate color correction vs. color grading - someone who's been around since before the time when people started using still cameras to make movies, so that it's someone who actually understands RYB gains, why they are what they are, and how to actually calibrate color to an accurate, measurable representation prior to "grading." :) I'm not sure any accurate tutorials exist on the subject. Kind of like timecode - no one outside older filmmakers and tv studio engineers really understands it anymore well enough to explain it, much less teach how to use it. In fact, most don't even believe it's valuable. People spend $300 apiece on little devices to feed timecode into cameras without ever understanding what to do with it later, and even post in production companies producing shows for network tv just ignore the embedded tc and use plural eyes, smh.
Thanks man! Agreed on colour grading/correction. I may collaborate with a pro to talk about it at some point here cause I am just doing what feels right and is not scientifically accurate. And ha TC, yeah something I also just started using with the Komodo but such a big fan!
You're legit!! This honestly feels like discovering all about a new camera myself and figuring out all the bits and pieces to make it work.... I will soon upgrade to RED and the credit goes to you sir! Kudos
Great stuff, keep it up! Also, I just wanted to point out that with the Komodo you don't need to worry about black shading again after changing exposure. On DSMC2 cameras you would have to do this if you didn't black shade for all the exposure range. But on the Komodo, when you black shade it takes into account all the different exposures for that sensor temp. You'll notice this when the changing exposures the E may go yellow, then switch back to green. And as you mentioned the T/E (T=Temp and E=Exposure), watch these because if the T is green that means the temp changes haven't been significant enough to need a new black shade. Also, that blob you saw almost looks like you had some light leak when you black shaded. Most lens caps aren't dark enough to do a trustworthy black shade. I would recommend the body cap over a lens cap in most situations. And then even trying to cover it up with something else dark if outside on a sunny day. Finally, this is super important, black shade after your camera has warmed up (can speed this up by letting it record for several minutes). Hope this helps!
I need to make a correction to one thing. If you do make a significant enough change to exposure (+-1/2 sec) you will see the E go yellow, indicating a new calibration is suggested. But that is a pretty significant change as I've only seen the E go yellow when really cranking the shutter speed. Which ideally you don't want to do anyways to keep a natural motion blur.

Excellent video. The only thing I would've liked to see more of is how to expose low light scenes. I've been having trouble with that when the light isn't controllable. Again, amazing work.
Thanks a lot! :) Well low light just give the sensor as much light as possible... Fast lens wide open, 180 degree shutter angle and then in post define the acceptable level of ISO (nothing you need to worry about during the shoot). If there are streetlights, some clipping of the lightsources should be fine. This is at least how I handle it.
@@Joey_Helms Thanks for the reply Joey! I appreciate it. I was a bit confused due to the "Low light capture" video on RED's channel -- they reference having your ISO set to a lower value while increasing the exposure of the scene via light, but to my understanding ISO doesn't affect the exposure of the raw data, so why would they speak about lowering the ISO to decrease your noise floor? god the footage you take on this is so gorgeous, I want to take it for a travel camera but i feel like it's not quick enough for run and gun, with the black shading, startup times and all that, what has your experience been?
Definitely not the fastest cam so you would have to keep it running. Black shading is not required every time you boot it up. Only if temps swing. I shot with it in Iceland and it is certainly built for planned shoots but if you challenge yourself you can run and gun with it like I do.
Your footage, grading, and tutorials are on fucking point dude. Fantastic quality footage and instruction. This channel will get millions of subs in the future...keep it up man
Bro, you rock man! I've been waiting for some info and you delivered! And like always with such good content! I'm eagerly waiting for the final production model so I can get one! Thanks a ton!
As a C200/EOSR user, I'm seriously considering a new A CAm and getting increasingly tempted by the Komodo for the film work and a used FS7 for the broadcast/livestream stuff rather than the C300 III to do both.
I feel like upgrading to cine stuff just got more accessible and the body on this thing means i can still take it on tour. if i ever go back on tour that is. i was debating the black magic pocket, but this white komodo omfg. i also have zero experience with red stuff we used black magic at ralph lauren.
Debating between trying to get my hands on a pre-order or just waiting and getting the final release version. Either way I'm very excited for this camera!
Hands down... This is the most complete real-world review I've ever experienced. I'm a beginner to cinematography, and considering this Red camera for a while now. Glad I found you... Alreay subscribed and liked and also pressed the dislike 2 times... Good lord... This is awesome brother!
Really informative video! Great work. One thing I am noticing and I'm not sure if anyone else has commented, but there are glitches in your export of this video. Specifically at 3:24, 12:09. I've also noticed it on some others of your videos, as well as another channel's Komodo review. Is this a problem with the Komodo? Seems pretty glaring, but odd that I haven't seen anyone else notice.
Zcam and komodo is more towards short film and shoots where you have more time to set up whereas c70 is more of a swiss army knife for gun and gun, events and quick workflow. You have to decide which category is more important to you.
Hi! First of all very complete video, thanks for that! I got a question, there are 2 digital glitchs at 15'48" and 15'50" in the footage, that was generated in the editing process or was the camera?
I dont think the ISO effects exposure at all. Its more like a lut. It changes the histogram but the actual footage is shot at the same exposure. Much different than say a dslr which changes the sensors sensitivity to light. You can see this if you move iso it dosent change the traffic lights even a little bit.
Thx for this video! I’m thinking about getting one. I use a MacBook Pro 2019. So I’m cautious on buying one because I don’t want to buy another AppleMac. What are your specs for your Mac if you don’t mind me asking?

Unfortunately I live in Brazil, the Komodo will get a lot of taxes, maybe I will just rent or something like that, gosh how I hate my country. But over all, amazing video, cleared my doubts and made me think (in my opinion, of course) this was the best camera announcement in 2020, sorry Sony, sorry Canon, RED nail it!
do you think its beeter than bmpcc 6k pro?
@@nakhoneproduction2164 yes, it is
@@gustavobahr4688 thank you !
Really helpful. Thanks
🤙🤙🤙
Great job! Thank you for sharing these tips. A RED is finally in reach and your videos are so informative!
Thanks so much Mark. That's great to hear!
thanks for the passion about the Komodo... and the videos. at 15:47 I see a glitch. then again a few times after that. what is that?
Thanks a ton! That's my GPU crapping out during the render. 😂 No issues in the raw footage.
god the footage you take on this is so gorgeous, I want to take it for a travel camera but i feel like it's not quick enough for run and gun, with the black shading, startup times and all that, what has your experience been?
Stoked to hear that!
As a C200/EOSR user, I'm seriously considering a new A CAm and getting increasingly tempted by the Komodo for the film work and a used FS7 for the broadcast/livestream stuff rather than the C300 III to do both.
Well the Komodo would keep you in the RF mount world ;)
Image quality looks so great..
🤙🤙🤙
Thank you very much! Really loved the video! Cant wait to get the Komodo X hehe :)
Have a blast!
I feel like upgrading to cine stuff just got more accessible and the body on this thing means i can still take it on tour. if i ever go back on tour that is. i was debating the black magic pocket, but this white komodo omfg. i also have zero experience with red stuff we used black magic at ralph lauren.
Perfectly explained 👏👏👏
Thanks a lot!!!
Solid review Joey! Time to start saving...my decisions are made simple with your excellent and concise approach.
Thanks so much 🤙 happy to hear that!
This is hugely helpful.. thank you!
Wonderful! 🤙
Debating between trying to get my hands on a pre-order or just waiting and getting the final release version. Either way I'm very excited for this camera!
👍👍 pre-orders are closed I believe. ;) Maybe some retailers still have a white version
Hands down... This is the most complete real-world review I've ever experienced. I'm a beginner to cinematography, and considering this Red camera for a while now. Glad I found you... Alreay subscribed and liked and also pressed the dislike 2 times... Good lord... This is awesome brother!
Thanks so much mate! Really happy to hear! Hope you enjoy what's coming tomorrow :)
Nevermind, saw your reply below about it being the GPU. Cheers!
Great video!
I'm trying to decide which camera I want. I'm looking between the ZCAM E2-F6, Canon C70, and the Red Komodo.
Thanks!! 🤙🤙🤙 Great choices!!!
Zcam and komodo is more towards short film and shoots where you have more time to set up whereas c70 is more of a swiss army knife for gun and gun, events and quick workflow. You have to decide which category is more important to you.
JOEY! You are a beast, keep up the great work. Also RED, I think you should hire this dude!! ;)
Ha, thanks so much Sawyer. 🤙
Awesome stuff Joey, keep it coming! Very insightful stuff.
Cheers Filipe
I cannot afford this camera now but I like your video, the review video is very comprehensive and clear.
Thanks so much ...and one day! It was always a dream for me as well.
Wow excellent tutorials
Great video, as someone coming to the red world this is the perfect introduction video.
Welcome :) 🤙
Hi! First of all very complete video, thanks for that! I got a question, there are 2 digital glitchs at 15'48" and 15'50" in the footage, that was generated in the editing process or was the camera?
thanks! And can confirm this happened in FCPX. That bug has been fixed since.
Soooooo helpful. ThankYOU!
Thanks for your time in doing this! hopefully I'll get mines soon too so I can start filming. Please keep posting these contents! :)
Thanks Mark :) Hope it is helpful!
How do you only have 22k subs, dude your channel is fire!!!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks so much dude 🤙
I dont think the ISO effects exposure at all. Its more like a lut. It changes the histogram but the actual footage is shot at the same exposure. Much different than say a dslr which changes the sensors sensitivity to light.
You can see this if you move iso it dosent change the traffic lights even a little bit.
Yep absolutely correct, I reckon it wasn’t clearly communicated in this video.
@@Joey_Helms no issues I figured you knew it.
OMG thank you seriously
🎉🎉🎉
Thx for this video! I’m thinking about getting one. I use a MacBook Pro 2019. So I’m cautious on buying one because I don’t want to buy another AppleMac. What are your specs for your Mac if you don’t mind me asking?
you are awesome
