I think we need to use different language when encouraging people to wear things that are flattering because “makes you look old” continues to perpetuate the idea that we as women lose value as we age.

Exactly, young is part of growing old, and growing old is desirable. Young may be tight and toned but old is winning the race and getting passed many pitfalls.

Value ???? What are you talking about? How do words make you lose value? Clothes can make you look old and be unbecoming on you. That has nothing to do with how much one is valued . A persons value is not what others think of you; it is what you think of yourself. Other peoples opinions are just opinions they don't matter.

    • @PatsyC57
      @PatsyC57 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

@@Claudia-se3mp , it all depends on how the matter of invisibility hurts you, so maybe not the general population but there are instances when someone’s opinion of you matters. Yes, old tends to be devalued and ignored, we got institutions full of the forgotten and corporations that aren’t interested in what old has to say, they just want to know how much they can squeeze out of the young but old gets ignored.

@@Claudia-se3mp , also the words, one uses, can put a value on one’s earning potential, because words can tell you a lot about a person, such as education, knowledge of the field (every discipline has its own vocabulary). So yeah words can devalue or add value to a person.

The problem today is nobody wants to look "old" or their age. What is wrong with that? who cares as long as you look good, clean and healthy. Nobody cares if they love you. Being older and mature is great and you do not have to look "youthful" or young to look beautiful. Be honest about your age and yourself. Trying to be something else is well the most out of date thing.

I’m 57 , 5’2 and thin so I can wear a lot of certain styles, but find it amusing that many stylists attempt to style with intent to make one look ‘taller’ ( what’s wrong with short!?) and of course more ‘ slender’ and more ‘youthful’. We older women were conditioned by the fashion industry and Hollywood of the past that tall skinny 80’s and 90’s disproportionately giant breasted models were the epitome of female beauty perfection. When I watch shows like Project Runway today- it seems they evolved since the #metoo outcry- into being obsessed with minimally breasted trans woman - or let’s be clear- a skinny flat chested man. These designers fawn over the trans ‘women’ models and prefer and pick them over the actual women to display their clothing designs on runways. It seems if the fashion industry can’t take advantage of tall thin prepubescent women for their runway shows (accused of sexualizing young women)- they just replaced these real young women with men! I think the fashion industry is disturbed. Not sure we should take its cues on fashion. Lol.

"Fashion" has always been a scam to make people buy clothes they don't need. It's terrible for your wallet and for the environment. I'm in my 50s, and I buy what I like and I keep clothes forever. If you enjoy buying clothes all the time then you do you, but don't fall into the trap of trying to please other folks with your personal choices.

I agree with you - fashion encouraging you to buy, buy, buy. We should be cutting back from unsustainable wardrobes that keep expanding more and more and more when we have to toss them over and over. The same thing happens in the sewing community - I now have too many patterns that I will never be sewing. You get sucked into purchasing them by the youtuber sewists, when you really prefer a few tried-and-true favorite patterns with more variety in fabrics you choose to buy. I too want to sew what I like and will wear each day, not just the latest fashion things out in the sewing community.

@@Donna-vh5ym You cannot be 'seriously curious' or you'd Google it for yourself. Or go to a shopping mall and take photos....or are you 'seriously' not being specific enough about what you actually mean?
Do you mean a public figure, someone who is famous who people will instantly recognise as personifying this issue? Because the problem is most of those now have stylists and cosmetic surgery. Goldie Hawn is close though. She used to really overdo the youth obsession but advisors have pulled her back from the brink. And Cher, who has a big problem with ageing and her methods are both self effacing and desperate.
But that doesn't mean it's not also a wider problem for ordinary women because it is! I see it a lot, with women wearing skimpy clothes and thinking fake eyelashes and hair extensions and overblown lips will justify wearing cut off jeans, mini skirts, leggings (they don't!). There is no dignity in it, just a desperate craving for the attention that belongs with youth.
We need to wake up and realise there's a lot to celebrate about being older, and choice of clothes should mean you are carefully editing and not looking ridiculous.

@deborahcurtis1385 // First of all. Thanks for the scolding. Today's my birthday..12/31...in my 60s, and I know exactly what you mean now that you've laid it out about celebrities, as well as others. I'm older but can't afford it, and even if I could, I wouldn't get all that plastic surgery. Fine for those who do, but it's not my thing. Growing older is an honor for me because my son was murdered at 20 years old, so I've earned every line on my face. Now, I will admit...I live in an extremely hot climate and only get a couple of months of cool weather, so I take advantage of leggings during that short time, (depending on where I'm going), but with a tastful sweater and an age appropriate jacket I asked because lots of people have lots of differing opinions as to "what trying to look young means", so I thought I'd ask, but I apologize for disrupting your day with my "Googable" question. I thought a community with women talking to others was acceptable. Guess I was entirely wrong. I wasn't trying to be facetious whatsoever. Have a Great New Year.

      @deborahcurtis1385 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Donna-vh5ym
      Donna. Firstly Happy Birthday!
When it's my birthday I make sure to have difficult conversations I've saved up and in the Too Hard basket, then and weave it in, it's a sure-fire method of disarming people and it usually results in a win/win! I haven't made this up and it IS funny! It's like pulling a rabbit out of a hat, 'but it's my birthday!' is a perfect riposte. I think when it's your birthday you should take full advantage so well done and great timing!
I don't know that I 'scolded' you as such but I challenged you back, because you challenged everyone - it seemed - as if it were impossible to find such women. They do exist they're in shopping malls and out there in bars and also in dating sites kind of overdoing it. Another thing they do is wear impossibly high heels. And too many fussy accessories. Too much animal print mixed up with colour. Just too much. You can get away with it when young but not when older you are in danger of just looking psychotic. I can't stand women who wear purple as some kind of signature it's a proxy for being unconventional. It's awful but that's just me. Heather gives some excellent advice on being stylish but not overdone. She doesn't do hot pants as far as I'm aware and is big on neutrals which are lifted by great details and cut. One thing she hasn't done is wardrobe maintenance. Too often we let ourselves down on the details, lint on our sleeves, or scuffed shoes.
But I realised you actually meant 'people in the public eye'. So I challenged you to be more specific in your use of language. We all do this at times, imagining people will know precisely what we mean, (or indeed all about ourselves) when in fact we're just being imprecise. And I am sure most celebrities are heavily guided and curated and saved from making idiots of themselves. I'm not sure this is always successful as being overly injected and tweaked give you a certain same-ness. And sometimes they take gambles which don't pay off. Even the Oscars aren't so much fun anymore too curated and safe. When Cher was in action it was enormous fun, and there was a lot for the Fashion Police to get stuck into. But we shouldn't take it too seriously ...should we?
Leggings aren't a crime, but on their own they can be! Especially in the pantless trend that's going around. I wear leggings under jackets and skirts and at jome. I am a big fan of the leather skirt but only have longer styles, one above the knee and one below. I'm tall so I can rock this look and not afraid to break it up visually.
The No.1 rule I follow is to not dress so young and cute that it will be a shock when I turn and they see my actual face. I think it's a good rule to follow because that's what age-appropriate is. Dress too young and it only emphasises the contrast from the expectations from your clothes with your face age because people are expecting very young by your clothes and then...shock!
You don't want to shock anyone you want to be overall pleasing to the eye, and not as if you're at war with the ageing process. IMO that's what's meant by 'desperate' it's conducting a war and it's showing a lack of self-awareness. Another desperate measure is over doing the hair into complicated styles, with loads of hair extensions and colour adding etc.
KISS is a good principle. Did I forget to mention not overplastering the makeup? This is a huge mistake and is desperate, less is more as we get older, but you can pick out one feature to emphasise. I realise it's an American thing to wear more makeup but if you look at the Europeans they do the opposite. The French are acutely aware of what suits them. They stay trim also and wear classics with a twist.
Plus any amount of cosmetic surgery youth twiddling will inevitably miss something out. Like the back of your hands or elbows...these are classic 'tells'. I can't be bothered stressing about it all too much. I appreciate the compliments I get for being youthful, but it's also a burden trying to pretend to be younger and I simply stopped doing it. With age comes wisdom and also a rich sense of humour. This doesn't always translate in posts on line but it's there. I do like to dress in a way that shows I'm engaged with the outside world but not to try to be so super trendy if only because I think clothes and makeup are not as important as being a setting for who you are. The personality must shine.
Like you, I enjoy dressing and fashion and really love to get my wardrobe out at this time of year and see what alterations I can do, and what's missing and what gets moved to the back of the wardrobe and what needs to be retired/gifted. Some things I no longer wear or never did.
Too cute is out. Bows all over the place? No. Too much fussy stuff? No. Lace all over the place? No.
Animal print? Yes but very limited. I don't go for the cougar look. It's embarrassing.
I have some updates and relegate some items to the back of the wardrobe. I love vintage and think quality of most things sold now is inferior to in the past.
This year what's missing from my wardrobe is a white adjustable belt, and maybe an emerald green one to ignite browns and navy and denims. I've had a fantastic time shopping the sales at The Outnet. It's more a European sensibility.
If you check above I actually defended Heather at times, this one was about the heading. She needs to attract views. But I have criticised Heather's take at times, but never her personally. I don't think we should take it personally if someone posts to give you something to think about. Slavish devotion is not having a discussion. Nor is getting mean.
Regardless, I want to bookend this post by wishing you a Happy New Year! (I bet nobody ever forgets your birthday!)
PS I'm in Australia. Very similar to Florida or SoCal. But I'm in a more temperate part in the south so we get the 4 seasons. Best wishes to you.

It depends on the style. Some are stylish and great with longer slacks or with tights, particularly the loafer style that’s trending now, but the one shown in the video as unstylish seem to be tagged that way because they’re clunky and don’t add to the elongated elegant silhouette being promoted.
Having said this… the ACTUAL best shoe to wear is the one that makes you feel confident and comfortable. It’s no use wearing stuff that’s uncomfortable and has you wincing with every step - especially the shoes, which can affect your back, knees and ankles too!

This is a wake up call for me. Quite often I get dressed, look in the mirror, and think the outfit makes me look old. And then I reason, we’ll, I am old. I’ve wondered if this is just part of aging, somehow along with wrinkles and gray hair, our outfits are almost predictive.

I think there are several other things that we can add that also make women look older. Wearing the wrong colors can accentuate shadows, lines and drooping on your face and neck. Color analysis is the way to go if you're not sure what colors work for you. Another thing that I believe will make you look older is wearing certain cowl necks which accentuate a neck that is not as firm and tight as it used to be. I feel that these types of sweaters or tops can look like an extension of a droopy neck. Instead, I think that wearing a clean simple neckline is most flattering.

I couldn't understand how my own mom could care so little about what she wore. Somewhere along the way she had traded style in favor of functionality and she didn't spare a single thought about clothes at all.
I, however, was always consciously on trend. My looks were always carefully curated and intentional down to the very last detail. I absolutely knew I would personally NEVER allow myself to fall so far out of style like that.....yet here I am at 38 and I literally could not be assed to give a shit about any of this! lol

People have different opinions on what works for people over 50. Its better to accept your age and dress to suit the person. I do agree older women should not give up and let themselves go. Its a good balance to look good and look like you are trying to be what you're not, young. Be clean, smell nice, wear something to show your best asset(s) in class, soft makeup, be comfortable, be kind and smile.

We walk EVERYWHERE over all kinds of terrain and weather…and we need large bags as once you hit the city you need your stuff …I mean a little purse on the train…you look kind of like a sitting duck…I don’t know how else to say it..life is combat here…it’s fun and exciting but like heels are out…no one wears them at all in the street…and if they do we know they are a tourist. I appreciate videos like this. The message isn't that being older means you aren't valuable. And it's not saying to dress like a teenager or college student. It's saying just because you are over 40 doesn't mean you have to look frumpy or outdated. For people who say they wear what they want, that's fine. Why even click on a video like this and watch it then?

French women nearly always dress in a chic way and ageing is something they don't deny, but celebrate with appropriate dressing that brings out the best in the individual woman. That's why they do a critique of themselves but not for self-hate; rather to it's to creatively and intentionally emphasise the best, and minimise the least attractive features.

Hi Heather, thank you for these amazing videos. When I used to work on the corporate world I was wearing heels in daily basis, but nowadays at home I have gotten a lot of wear out of my Golden Goose sneakers which by the way add an inch or two and look great with skirts too. I am 5ft 3' and being short one of the issues is we try to compensate with heels which are not necessarily very practical and not for all settings. I was wondering if you can do a casual short girl's flat shoes and jeans. I absolutely love those VB jeans you are showing here, but they are made for tall girls it seems. The inseam is 35. If you find the same jean for max 28 inseam I would get them without a second thought. They seem to have the right wash of jean I love.
Yesterday I got a fantastic pair of jeans from Levis in a bootcut made with the right inseam for my height 28x28 and I was amazed with their fit. They are a dark blue wash and I got them for less than 100 euros. Although I have a number of high heels and boots would you suggest some nice low heel loafers to wear them with - given loafers are having a moment right now and can replace my ballerinas. Thank you so much. Hugs from Switzerland.

Only very tall can carry it off. I love the current high waisted wide leg jeans or trousers (well tailored) with a tucked in simple good quality v neck tee, and a nice leather belt. Heather offers many great suggestions and alternatives to all her "No's"
    She stresses:
    1. No long tunics, particularly with asymmetrical hem.
    2. No chunky overly large costume jewelry
    3. No frumpy chunky heavy shoes, worse with velcro.
    4. No low rise tight jeggings or capri length anything.
    5. No bad underwear
    6. No overly-hardwared, overly large handbags
Overall, slim down and neaten up the silhouette in entire wardrobe - jeans, jackets, shoes. Minimalize. Wear shapewear!

I just found your channel and I'm binging on your videos :) I LOVE your fashion tips!! Spot on.
A few observations (take them or leave them and still do what makes you happy!) I'm a makeup artist in Beverly Hills and almost all of my current clients want a more natural, youthful appearance with their makeup. You have GORGEOUS eyes, skin and lips (and such a beautiful face). You want people to see your eyes (not your eyeshadow) when they look at you....and your eyes are a beautiful color. But we see your eyeshadow first. Same with your lips. Maybe try for just some lip gloss on your amazing lips and just a hint of blush well blended. You would look amazing with no eyeshadow (maybe just a base of neutral), mascara and a thin eyeliner on the bottom (no one wears mascara on their bottom lashes now here). I wish you could come into our salon....you'd see how natural and beautiful you'd look with much less makeup. Also, you'd look much younger with shorter hair (maybe an inch below your shoulders but still waved as you do would look amazing and more current, IMO).
In the end though....you are gorgeous either way and we all have to do what we feel looks and feels best for ourselves!!!

Any clothing items I have that I love but are painfully out of style I relegate to the “wear it around the house” category. That way I can still enjoy it and if someone drops by I’m dressed and not in jammies all the time. Retirement is a strange animal I’m loving but it takes getting used to. ❤

I'm 66 and nowhere ready to put on my granny panties yet! I'm not trying to look 30, but I am trying to dress up to date and be stylish. Ultimately I think we all need to do what feels good for us. I've never lived a cookie cutter life...I'm a Woodstock gal...lol you are beautiful inside and out. I'm taking all your advice to heart ❤️

Here we are, retired and comfy in our Bearclaw boots and plaid p.j. bottoms, and someone wants us to wear toeless shoes and bare ankles. Most of this area is still suffering downed power lines and shlepping those heavy propane tanks back and forth for refills. These outfits look like early fall/late spring, but w/o the rainboots.

I would say, confidence is everything! Not all types and styles are flattering to everyone. My grandma always said, you dress based on your body type. If you’re 60 and have the body, go for it! But comfort can also make or brake a style, because if you can’t walk on stilettos you won’t look good.

Chunky necklaces can be very edgy- like the forever young centenarian Iris Apfel! She is beyond any trend. More is more and less is a bore! Chunky shoes are so fun too!

That looks like an outfit I'd wear when I was 27. I'm in my 40s. A good pair of jeans that don't have tears in them, or flair. I think a nice pair of boot cut jeans. No frills on them at all. Are an awesome look for older ladies.
