CHIM CHIMINEY - OUR NEW CUSTOM BUILT, BESPOKE CHIMNEY FOR OUR NARROWBOAT

  • Yes, we are talking about our damn fire again. Whilst we have already solved the issue of not being able to get our stove hot enough, more coal was the answer, we still felt that our existing chimney just wasn't up to the job. We wanted a taller chimney that was also double skinned to create a better draft for our fire and despite searching online and in lots of chandleries and marina shops we just couldn't find one to fit our awkward stove pipe.
    We were given the details for Chris who came to our boat and built a bespoke new chimney for us on site. It was fascinating to watch and we were incredibly impressed by his attention to detail and the care he took in his craft.

    Just a thought.....in your first vlog about the underwhelmingness of your stove , you mentioned a "baffle" . If this is the , for want of a better description , quarter-spherical insert in the base of the flue , the Morso manual says it must be removed, except in certain installation situations , basically not one such as yours . Also seem to remember it went on to say , that if installed in a narrowboat , do not fit this baffle . Anyhoo...open the lower door ..close the top damper , put more coal in - a small load such as you've used to get the initial fire is fine , but when off and running , get that sucker baked up ! Then you can close the lower door , and use the rotary damper to regulate the burn . The upper rotary damper may also be used to regulate to a degree , and allows secondary air in for a cleaner , more complete burn. It lets air in to burn the volatile gases released on combustion , which can add a surprsing amount of heat. Hope that gets yer toasty 11 .

      Thanks for commenting! This video’s a bit out of date at this point, we did eventually figure out how to keep ourselves warm with the Morso! M

      +caskwith We plan on doing so as soon as we can figure out a suitable mounting point. Luckily it fits like a glove and I'm quite careful taking it in and off, so hopefully it won't happen before we get it sorted! M

    Your new chimney is a thing of beauty, one of a kind and unique. Great to see a craftsman at work too. Just one wise ass comment - it would have been a practical addition if had riveted two 'finger hooks' at the bottom to make removal easier and avoid greasy fingerprints on the stainless.😉

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point, I must admit there are already some unsightly fingerprints! Oh well! And yes, great to be able to support a craftsman! Jo

  • @lv_woodturner3899
    @lv_woodturner3899 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice new chimney. A good craftsman with the right skills and tools.
    FYI the tar is only from burning wood. Some woods have more resin than others.
    When you stop using the stove in the spring, I recommend cleaning out any coal ash from the stove and chimney. Coal ash combined with moisture is very corrosive.
    Good to see you did not need the bandit mask for this video. We just had out first snow yesterday, about 3 inches. Midweek the high temperatures will be below freezing. Just trying to make you feel warmer. LOL

    Hey dudes, we had all the issues you talk about with our chimney and even tried a double skinned flue which fixed onto the roof casting to no avail! In the end we went to stainless insulated double skin flue from the firebox to the outside via a couple bends and a silicone roof fixing which works very well. We also have a 500mm extension for use when moored up. So anyhow I hope your new flue works, but if not drop me a line and I’ll email photos of ours if your interested. Cheers Sean

    Coal can be tricky. My dad brought a stove from West Virginia, where he was raised. Coal there is soft rather dull and flaky. He though he could use the coal supplied here in New England. In testing He found local coal did not work, after buying 500 Lbs of it. :(Well one day I hope that stove will find another home, perhaps as a planter. ~={:)

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, for my part, we navigate our domestics well because we both decided to grow up a while back, before we met. I had a LOT of examples of exactly how not to do it and refused to carry on lessons badly learned from parents who weren’t ready at the time to be either partners or parents. Gotta be flexible rather than not, open rather than closed. M

      It has been called that... but as the term has taken on some rather racist overtones -- and never made sense to apply to laborers, as in Asia it's a farmer's hat and laborers didn't wear them -- it's falling into disuse.

    Hi Michael / Jo, We also have a Liverpool boat with a curved roof and our standard chimney jams about 6 inches above the roof! We’ve just had the boat repainted and really don’t want to use this chimney again, can you please supply me with the contact deatails for Chris who made your bespoke chimney. I’m not sure how to message on TH-cam so if you can let me know that will be great. In the meantime I’ll look to see if you have a FB page. Sylvia.

    What a find - peripatetic bespoke fabricator. I suppose in an earlier age he would have been a tinker going place to place, mending kettles etc and sharpening knives. Was he particularly camera shy?

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really, he was happy for us to film. It’s more that we are fairly shy about pointing cameras at people I guess! Jo

      Apologies if I sounded critical. Your quality is at a high standard - the filming of the work was really clear and complete. The editing is always excellent, and while it is impossible to please everybody with your music choices, I think you make a good job of matching the music to the mood of the vlog. And, you quickly realised that you had a natural star in George.
