    Whew, I was worried it might be a case of the manflue but you seemed ok at the end there perched on Ed’s Boat with a nice cuppa tea. Nice one Ed.

    Was afraid that your "honey-do" list might be too long at home, Ed. Glad to see you back on the boat. I'm living vicariously through your videos from here across the pond. Looking forward to more progress this year.

    Very interesting, and looked to be well done.Only bit missing was welding the sections together, which I would have found interesting.. If I was being picky, I would say thea the chimney you placed at the end needed a lick of paint

    Will be interesting to see if your internal flue passes a safety test I had to have my single interior flue changed for a double skinned on last boat safety test certificate I have just last week had a renewal safety certificate awarded and I was asked if that flu was a double skin or not so good luck with that one📣

    Hi Ed. My only concern is that the elbow of the flue angles inward and could burn someone if they walk or trip over in that direction. All in all a good job.

    Excellent video. If you posted more often, you would have 100K subs after 6 years. I guess I will binge watch all your 78 videos and see where the explanation must surely show up as to what you do when not on the boat. Or, I'll just patiently wait... 😏

    Very nice job. One question though, besides the screws themselves, won't there be corrosion between the aluminum collar and flue pipe? The screws probably penetrated the paint and it seems any weak spots in paint seems to be exploited by the natural moist air of the canal.

    • @edsworld4550
      @edsworld4550  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you are right it it more likely to corrode but it will take years to be a real problem and then i will just make another one. I have had an idea for an improvement already😂

  • @robinallen7356
    @robinallen7356 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Was the top alu locking ring suggested by some regulation? I would think the flue needs to be able to expand and contract lengthwise with changes in temperature. That's also a reason why flexible sealant is used at the top between flue and roof collar. If the flue expands when heated, the fixed flue bottom would force the top to raise higher creating free gap between the alu ring and roof collar - meaning it doesn't actually support the flue's weight when it is hot, and the stove would take the weight when hot. If the flue ever becomes colder (and so, shorter) than the day the alu ring was fitted, then the alu ring would lift the bottom of the flue slightly out of its cement seal, or at least reduce the effectiveness of that cement seal. These reasons would suggest leaving the flue top free of any locking ring, and leaving the weight of the flue fully supported by the stove. It has to take the full weight when the hot flue expands anyway, so might as well hold the weight all the time when cold too.

      Robin Allen Hi and thanks for the comment. The regs say it has to be suspended so that’s what I have done. It’s probably in case of collision damage or some such thing so it is less likely cause a fire. I do not think it is needed personally and many boaters do not do it and still pass the safety inspection. I did it because I thought I should try and conform to the regs as much as I could and avoid any disappointment when the boat is inspected.

    Hi, how did you get the angles for the dog leg in the flue pipe please, I was watching with great anticipation and then you jumped it!!!! I'm nearly ready to fit my'n but I'll either have to cut the flue or move the roof coller.
    Thanks, great video.....

    • @edsworld4550
      @edsworld4550  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi and thanks for tne question, i had the use of a workshop near by with a saw which had the ability to cut angles. I cut each end at 15degs to give me a bend of 30 degs. If i didnt have that facility then i would have cut it with an angle grinder but that is messy and time consuming. Welding them together is something that i can do easily so i was not bothered how big tbe gaps were but it can be an issue for some. I tacked it first and then tried the fit before welding.

    • @craigsheaf3721
      @craigsheaf3721 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@edsworld4550 hi, thanks for the quick reply. Why 15% at each bend? If my fire is fixed and my hole through the roof is fixed, wouldn't the angle change? The welding isn't an issue, I'm a semi skilled welder, but have issues with angles and pipe work!!

    • @edsworld4550
      @edsworld4550  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was a 30deg bend so each piece is cut at 15deg and that keeps the joint even. The boat safety regs dont like you having a bend of more than 30deg but most people seem to use 45deg bends. I do want to remake it all though with progressive bends. I think it would look better.

    Question,can you let me know,the total length and width of your narrowboat,how much of the hull is submerge under the
    Water line,does the floor fill colder than the rest of the top cabin,in your candid opinion,is it advisable to lay and
    Install underfloor heating pipes ,or would the cold water reduce the effectiveness of rising heat,

    • @edsworld4550
      @edsworld4550  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi and thanks for the questions. The boat is 50ft long, 6' 11" wide (outside measurement) and is 1.9 ft under the water line. Yes the bottom of the boat is colder than the rest but only noticable in the depths of winter. Under floor heating would probably sort that out but would be expensive to run and difficult to fit unless you stripped out the whole boat. Good floor insulation is usually the best way to go.

  • @MrRoyboy55

    Bias twards functional - heat resistant tiles all the way up -- which leaves the Wood edging(moulding) - a lesson from fire place mantels --Wood mantels would get dried out over long period of time and one day just catch fire ,, i don't see that ever happening with a stove pipe flue -- but maybe some wood oil rub once-in-a-while would be preventative !!

  • @phenogen8125

    Why not profile the base of the roof fitting by grinding back to scribe properly or make a bespoke one with your access to machine shop etc? Zone of corrosion there likely with what you did. I''d have run the flue parallel to wall to give more space and better aesthetic with appropriate insulation at side. Would have looked tidier. A double skin flue throughout also makes for cool flue and better combustion, less tar and condensation issues and does away with need for insulation adjacent. Stainless flues by mirroring light also look good; the extra cost well worth it. Direct experience vindicates my opinion. My cents worth....

  • @LS1Cobra

    I probably would have installed the stove pipe the other way up (Long section at the bottom. That would mean it wouldn't intrude into you living space so much. Also on the roof flange you could have bevelled the edge with an angle grinder to make it sit flush to the roof. Cheers.

    • @geraldhenrickson7472
      @geraldhenrickson7472 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The upper wall slopes inward, placing the flue too close to the wall. The pipe doesnt really intrude anyway. I think he did a great job. Its OK to comment w/o remarking what you feel was done wrong. It only serves to make you feel better and the TH-cam creator...not so much.

    • @TairnKA
      @TairnKA 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My first thought. ;-)
      At 8:40, Ed remarks about possibly adding heat shielding to the wall so flipping it over was a valid "suggestion" but it's also a mute point, it's been installed days or weeks ago and its going to stay that way. ;-)
      Oh, G Henrickson, I fell you remarks about my (I won't presume for Michael Murphy) that I had an ulterior motive ("make you feel better") was inappropriate. Subject closed, let's move on.

    The Soliftech diagram does say the flue should be insulated both outside and inside the boat (double skinned).It does seem a bit OTT for such a short run on a canal boat but that's what I was advised to do to ensure I got a boat safety certificate.
