This was my thought, too! Please thank her for all of us. She's very kind to share their home, and her family history, with us and we do appreciate it very much!
Thank you to your lovely mother for sharing her beautiful and historic home. Wonderful what is happening in the fields. I have done this in my backyard. Rye grass goes not hold up to the heat and needs water, clover and plantain and dandelion do much better. I hardly water.
I think that the family is so lucky that Julie married Luke. History is everything and she is so into Luke's family history. This is wonderful for everyone.
Your dairy farmer, sorry I forgot his name, is beyond genius. I could listen to him talk all day long, learn something and not get bored. The world needs more people like him.
Julie, this is the first time I've seen you sneaking around your own home/estate and whispering while hidden in a baseball cap to remain incognito while visitors are touring just feet away😂...you're so focused on keeping up your mission to share the history! So funny. ❤ I loved everything about this video. Regarding military uniforms (across most countries, and over time) and as a currently serving senior leader - soldiers, sailors, airmen & marines have a battlefied "field" uniform, a "garrison" uniform (you could say office, but we never do), a "dress" uniform, and for many - a "cermonial" uniform (and some have more, depending on their role and rank.) You pulled varios pieces from that array, worn in that era. Its constantly changing. Based on how well your family has archived and saved the Montagu history, I'm sure there's a box somewhere in your house that has awards/medals that go on each uniform. (Maybe in those upstairs rooms that you store vintage Mapperton items, or overflow, that you showed a couple of years ago..the one room had all the old phones in it on so on.) I prize my medals above all, it would be highly unusual for a military person to throw away their commendations and other such regalia ...maybe you can offer a reward for anyone that can find the box/boxes. (Each uniforn has its own medals, which are more formal depending on the uniform type - the composition varies, they are not the same on each uniform).
I adore your mother!!! Thank her for allowing us a peek inside her home 🏡. Her furniture pieces are exquisite. I love her straight forward attitude, we could be the best of friends.
I thought the same thing. I love touching old things from the old days. Like at Luke’s mom’s home I just want to touch all that old furniture from the 1600’s. Like how many people from history sat in this chairs
Always a delight to see Momma Montagu! Thank you to her for so graciously allowing us inside and offering a look at some of her beautiful, treasured possessions.
Just looked up the 1612 witch trials of the 10 people accused of being witches in Pendleton. What a scary time to live through. History is fascinating and so important to learn about. Your Momma’s home is beautiful and her loving care of her items and her willingness to share them was a treat. ❤
Tom is an absolute mine of information when it comes to the land & soil, a joy to listen to! Just love his dog who is obviously very fond of Tom, thank you 😊😊
Lovely to see Luke’s mother and home, feel as though we are getting to know the background of your family and heritage these past few years. Thank you for inviting us in.x
Tell your mother, how much we appreciate seeing all her lovely and extraordinary furniture and things. Absolutely wonderful, and she is so charming. Oh, and be sure to let her know that of course, the Lancashire Witches are well known. Some of the books I looked at are explicit about the Pendle Hill area too and call them the Pendle Witches. Now, please tell Julie again, that I admire her enthusiasm and respect for the home, belongings, and history of the family she married into. It isn't just every spouse that would give so much time, attention, and energy to such a massive undertaking!
Thank you to the Viscountess for sharing her magnificent furniture pieces and some of her interesting family history. Thank you to Luke and Tom for taking time to explain how the field plants contribute to reducing the green house gases. I will try to be more tolerate of the deep rooted weeds that pop up over and over in my garden!♥️
One of my maternal great-grandfathers, born in or near Preston and brought to the US as a child, used to tell my grandfather, “Lancaster men make good fighting men.” He was in the Union cavalry, during the American Civil War, captured when his horse was shot out from under him, and managed to survive imprisonment at one of the worst prisoner of war camps in the southern US.
@mappertonlive, I know what the “military clothing” is found inside the box. I consider myself to be learned and an expert on this. As I have 2 full sets myself, the most recent one I just received a couple weeks ago once belonged to Norman Dugdale of Dutton Manor. What you have is a full set of court dress. Made in a deep midnight blue velvet, you would order these from a bespoke suit maker such as Ede and Ravenscroft, Henry Poole etc. This dress was for gentlemen who were invited to attend court and meet the sovereign of the day, if it’s dated 1936 likely for court with George V. The buttons are cut steel a reminder of the Georgian period and the sword is cut steel as well it seems as though yours is in need of a little repair gluing the chape and throat to the top and bottom of the leather scabbard. I use dubbin for feeding leather and it will become supple again even if it’s stiff, good for the patent leather court shoes as well. For cleaning the uniform it is important that water not be used directly onto the uniform as it will felt the fabric. It just needs a good brushing with a suit or clothing brush. If you hang it up properly the wrinkles will go away naturally and I’ve been told by Keith Levett of Henry Poole that you can steam these over a boiling kettle if need be to get out the wrinkles. But be careful not to get it wet. From what I see that is in that case is in order of appearance on camera: a walking stick, a walking stick perhaps military, a military swagger stick, a cut steel court sword to go with the court uniform, velvet court coat in the new style, court shoes, Indian military knife scabbard frog and belt, velvet cut steel sword frog and belt, silk court stockings, possible black silk garters, not sure, those are the metal scabbard mounts for the cut steel sword, bow tie or garter, part of a scabbard for a naval saber, rabbit fur court cocked hat, evening white silk waistcoat for court dress with cut steel buttons, velvet court waistcoat, cloth breeches I’m not sure what these are doing here but possibly legal breeches, velvet court breeches. All contained in the original Japanned tin case. I’m currently working on court dress content for my TH-cam channel and I will dive in depth about court dress. A great source of info is “dress and insignia worn at his majesty’s court” a pdf version is available online at internet archive, physical copies are available as well. You have a beautiful set of court dress and an even more beautiful house and story, take care of them. -Jake
Luke is so funny, and his mother is lovely. How nice to be able to peer into the day-to-day lives of people who enjoy and are burdoned by royal lineage.
That ceiling is beautiful in that room It must be wonderful to sleep in that gorgeous bed in in that gorgeous room But just without the tours there lol
Your mom is so amazing. What a gem of a person and a very elegant woman. That is the best Elizabethan furniture I have ever seen in my life, hands-down she has some of the best collection. Such a bye gone era
Rather than rubbing the fabric with the dry sponges, I'd use a small hand vacuum with the nozzle at least a couple inches away from the items at all times, with a piece of nylon stocking or similar fabric stretched over it and secured with a rubber band. That only sucks up very tiny particles into the machine, without rubbing anything loose that is not already unattached. If you happen to suck up anything (larger than dust) that you want, it is easily saved when you turn off the vacuum.
As long as Tom's puppy is going to stick his nose in, introduce him. We love Mappercats and all the pets and animals around Mapperton and the farms. Love to see more of them.
As an American this is fascinating - not the aristocratic glamor or intrigue, but human stories and getting stuck in with the DIY of things older than my country. I hope to see it someday!
Oh my, the hinges on that wardrobe are stunning. Thank you so much Countess for allowing us to see the furniture and talk about Alice Nutter. When my granddaughter and I were doing ancestry, we found out that one of our ancestors was hung as a witch in Salem Massachusetts. Luke the piece on the land was fascinating. I'd love if you could also do something on hedgerows and how important they are to the wildlife. Great episode everyone. Look forward to more of everything that was covered today.
A huge thank you to the Countess for sharing her lovely home and wonderful things. May we please have an episode two, three and beyond?! Her kwoledge is amazing!
Omg So- Is it safe to say U likely HAVE A TRUNK FOR EVERY SINGLE EARL and countess of Sandwich in there .. somewhere??!!! This is a GOLDMINE of History.. 10000X BETTER than watching the history Channel ❤🎉
It was so nice of your mum to let us have a peek of their home. It is hard to put your head around how old the furniture is. And Julie, how fun to find these treasures. Thank you
Thanks to all who presented on this fabulously meaty episode. My takeaway from the passion, wonder, and expertise in what was presented feeds my love of history and nourishes my hope for the future in these trying times. I'm watching you from the U.S, where people are living in a state of intense fear in this election year. We stand to lose so many of our rights, as it seems like we are on the verge of a literal Apocalypse. You must understand the importance of your various channels in giving me some hope in the humanity that has persevered, and that it may continue without imploding. As an urban farmer practicing regenerative agriculture, I also thank you for presenting the important concept of it to the world. Cheers and thanks to all of you! I must visit Upper and Lower Buttocks now!
Amazing to see the 8th Earl of Sandwiches military clothing, wonderful they are still in such reasonable shape. And thanks to the Countess of Sandwich for her tour of her home, and information on the history of her family.
I usually enjoy Mapperton Live but this episode was superb! I loved see seeing the 8th Earl's military treasures, and it was fascinating to hear of Tom's techniques. The tour with Carolyn of the parsonage was great and I hope to see more sometime. I looked up both the Earl and Alice Nutter, both interesting.❤
Wow .. ❤️ truly ASTONISHING LOOK AT THE COLOR!!! Whoever has preserved these has done a MAGNIFICENT job.. absolutely museum quality stuff coming from MAPPERTON ❤🎉 🏆 From the Dresses to the coronation outfit to .. the hand written ( ICE CREAM ) recipe book ... so exciting 🎉🎉🎉🎉
25:50 😊 Tom, I have been listening to you speak about the field you’ve sewn in rapt attention. So interesting to see and learn about how these ancient estates are being revived!
We got very excited when the Countess began telling stories about her family at Haworth? Did they have a piano? Would Emily Bronte play? The families were on very good terms; did the notoriously reticent Bronte sisters liven up in the company of friends? Was the Countesses family involved with a community tea like the one described in Shirley? Oh, the questions! Was there house really used as the model for Wildfell Hall?
I studied the witch trials in the English Speaking World, and it's so cool that the Countess is descended to an accused witch. No wonder I like her so much, I sensed a kindred spirit!
What a Grand episode! So much History to be found without leaving home. To find the Eighth Earl’s Uniform and waistcoats, the sheaths for the weapons as well as the ‘form’ for his hat! The Countess sharing her family history and furnishings of her natal forebears is fascinating and the Old Rectory, wow! My former husband used to say I was “a sucker for an old house!” We lived in extreme North Florida, in what was an Agrigrarian, sparsely populated County. There were some old(for us) homes scattered about that I would ask to be driven past, frequently. Having Tom explain the History of the land is interesting to me, as well. Had I continued my Education after High School, I’d have studied History, I’ve always been ‘drawn’ to it. I can’t wait to see all that is happening at Mapperton.
As a rancher in Texas, I really appreciate what you are doing in your pastures. We are doing the same. Our environment is different (much drier and more fragile /sensitive) than yours, but the principles remain the same. My sister and her husband farm in Canada, and they also embrace the same principles you are. Amen and Amen!😊
I think it's adorable that you are whispering. The excitment of holding history would overwhelm me to the point of passing out. Oh my Luke's Mother has such beautiful antiuqes and I think a part 2, part 3, part 4, etc. would be nice. I could happily listen to her for hours. The land surrounding Mapperton looks so vibrant, healthy, and lush. Seems that the regenerative project is working.
Hi Julie- I just wanted to tell you what an amazing job you have done saving Mapperton as an inheritance for your children and for all generations. When I first started seeing these videos, I was upset that I thought you spoke for your husband too much, and since it was his family’s heritage, I’d only wanted to hear from him. I want to extend my sincerest apologies. You have proven yourself so many times over just how much you love Mapperton and history. You have done so much, personally, to help bring money and attention and followers to help keep Mapperton running. Please take some rest once in a while, and thank you so very much for bringing us these amazing videos!😊❤ 12:20 Your mother and father are so very gracious and hospitable! I absolutely love your big, beautiful estate. Thank you for letting us in! ❤❤❤
Julie that is so Amazing that you found the 8th Earls military uniform 🪖 You are doing such a great job preserving all your Family's history 💕 I am sure whom ever stored these precious items and with bits of Notes 📝 what a fun treasure hunt 😀 😊 ❤ I am certain many of Luke's ancestors are SMILING down on YOU 😊 May they all RIP 🙏 🕊 knowing You and Luke are caring for there things that ment so much to them ❤ Bless you both 🙏 🤲 🕍 💕
The Countess is wonderful. Such wonderful humor. Thank her for letting us see her home, and I look forward for more teases from her.. Alice Nutter, that would be a draw for tourists. Might need to convince your mom to get it all documented and collect all of Alice's things and bring it to the big house or maybe one of the cottages for tours. Lovely set of vintage clothing. proper preservation of textiles will extend the life, so glad you've learned so much preservation Julie. Awesome find. You'd think after 20 yrs you'd seen it all, but that house continues to give wonderful gifts of the past
I may be in the minority on this, but while the looking back on history is fascinating, the looking forward of the rewilding has me on fire for the future of this beautiful and ever improving planet!
It seems like some of the historical items come to you at just the right time when you're ready to find them. That you have found those pieces of clothing is so wonderful. The dear Countess is just precious. Her stories are very interesting. I could spend days with her. 😊❤
Viscountess another most wonderful episode we are so glad that you are still finding history with the Earl of Sandwich’s mystery chest. The Viscount and his most gorgeous mother are so incredibly interesting and we would have liked to see the Viscount with some historical armour riding the rocking horse. Will the wall in the closet space be opened up? That note was very intriguing 😊. Thank you all once again for a glimpse into the history of Mapperton House, take care, be safe and God Bless 😇🙏🏰 PS- Will have to watch Nestor’s epic solo sailing adventure ⛵️
Luke, your mother is wonderful ❤ thank you so much for showing us your parents very special house they live in now, so close to the Mapperton main house, and the beautiful furniture and history are amazing. Look forward to part two.
So many wonderful family treasures to see and discover. Love the dragon chair!! My youngest daughter has been in love with dragons since she was tiny 😊. We have just begun getting family furniture and treasures from my husband's family, because his cousin is downsizing. Nothing as old and beautiful as what the Countess has, but very meaningful to us.I also have the brass bell from my grandparents barge, circa the early 20th century. Knowing where you come from and being able to pass it down, is a beautiful gift. I love the stories that Luke's mother has with those furniture pieces.
What a rare treat to get a "taster" of the Countess's home and North Country furniture! Thank you so much, and I can't wait for part two. And thanks for the great explanation of regenerative farming. Nice to know the theory and chemistry of what the world does all on it's own, and has done for eons, before we thought we knew better.
What a super find, especially as you don't have much to go on as far as the 8th Earl is concerned. You contained your excitement well! I am looking forward to seeing the original clothes container all cleaned and restored, as well as the shoes etc. Luke, fabulous update on the "wilding" side of Mapperton. Tom was interesting to listen to, and explained the carbon process well. I am going to go back over it again. It is always special to listen to the countess, her stories are rich and interesting, and her knowledge seems limitless. Please Luke, thank her for letting us have a glimpse into her sanctuary🌹. Thank you both so much.
Please tell your Mom how wonderful her home is and I feel honored to be let in❤
This was my thought, too! Please thank her for all of us. She's very kind to share their home, and her family history, with us and we do appreciate it very much!
❤
Thank you to your lovely mother for sharing her beautiful and historic home. Wonderful what is happening in the fields. I have done this in my backyard. Rye grass goes not hold up to the heat and needs water, clover and plantain and dandelion do much better. I hardly water.

I really enjoyed hearing Lukes mother talk about her family!!! We need more of her and loved seeing the furniture in that home. What a treasure!!
The curved knife holder is for a kunjar an Arab ceremonial knife.
And yours
This guy was so good explaining the life of the plants.
This has to be one of the most informative, educational channels on TH-cam. I love it. All of it Thanks
Thank you to the Countess for letting us have a peak at her home. The furniture is stunning and I love her stories! She is a treasure! ❤
Regenerative farming, your mother’s stories, that wonderful dragon chair all that and more - just really fascinating. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
That dog out in the field with Luke is adorable 🥰
Luke your mother is a treasure, I love seeing her and listening to her stories.
Strong family resemblance between Luke and Alberta. Wow!
Luke looks so much like his mum. She is delightful. Thank her on my behalf for allowing us a little peek into her home.
I love hearing from Luke’s mother, such a straightforward charmer she is!!
Amazing that the military clothing has survived for so many years. Julie you're the perfect person for the restoration work that Mapperton needs!
I adore your mother!!! Thank her for allowing us a peek inside her home 🏡. Her furniture pieces are exquisite.
I love her straight forward attitude, we could be the best of friends.
Countess, I love when you give us your historical tours. You truly are a treasure. Thank you for opening your home for us. ❤️
I don’t want a title or big home but I envy you for getting to go on a treasure hunt daily. Oh, to be able to explore and touch history.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Please thank The Lady for allowing us the honor of seeing her home and the amazing items of her personal history!
More Countess! I always love episodes that feature the Countess. It was fun to see the Old Rectory.
Thank you, dear noble lady, for opening up the Rectory for our eyes to see. Look forward to Part 2.
Just looked up the 1612 witch trials of the 10 people accused of being witches in Pendleton. What a scary time to live through. History is fascinating and so important to learn about.
Your Momma’s home is beautiful and her loving care of her items and her willingness to share them was a treat. ❤
Thanks to the Countess for giving us a look at furniture. It is a passion of mine so very grateful to see it and compare with her knowledge of it.

Wow Jake! this is unbelievable helpful! Would you mind email this to: office@mapperton.com - it's so helpful! Thanks!!
What an amazing Rocking Horse just beautiful
It warmly reminds me of the Skin Horse in the Velveteen Rabbit story. ❤ It’s got the most fantastic patina- never let anyone paint it!
Amazing vintage clothing discovery, Julie! Also, Luke, please thank your mom for opening up her home to us! She is a wealth of information.
Love seeing Luke's Mom in videos. She is such a wealth of knowledge, I do hope you're getting as much of it as you can, such a treasure.

I think seeing Luke’s mums house was my favorite episode
As an American this is fascinating - not the aristocratic glamor or intrigue, but human stories and getting stuck in with the DIY of things older than my country. I hope to see it someday!

Oh that little Mapperton family~ they are so cute 🥰
I can’t wait to see all that is happening at Mapperton.
truly enjoyed the regenerative farming segment...thank you for sharing [all]
As a rancher in Texas, I really appreciate what you are doing in your pastures. We are doing the same. Our environment is different (much drier and more fragile /sensitive) than yours, but the principles remain the same. My sister and her husband farm in Canada, and they also embrace the same principles you are. Amen and Amen!😊
I really enjoyed hearing from the Countess about her family’s history and getting a peek of their lovely home. Would love to learn more!
The knowledge of the plants in the field is so exciting! It is amazing to learn which plants you have and what they do for the soil.
Your mother is amazing. We would love to see more of her beautiful house and learn more about her family and furniture.
Please take some rest once in a while, and thank you so very much for bringing us these amazing videos!😊❤
12:20 Your mother and father are so very gracious and hospitable! I absolutely love your big, beautiful estate. Thank you for letting us in!
❤❤❤
Thank you so much! xx Julie

Incredibly beautiful waistcoat, silk and velvet....I am drooling in excitement...😊
Wish I lived close by..I could help you....would love to...❤
The Countess is wonderful.
I could listen to your mom-in-law all day.
WOW, the China is stunning!!
Thank you to Luke's mom for inviting us in. What a treat.
I love your love of history… especially about your family. You and Luke are wonderful representatives of the Montague/Sandwich family!
How wonderful for you and how lucky Luke's family is to have you as the historian and your appreciation is amazing .
Beautiful home full of breathtaking antique furniture. Thank you for inviting us to enjoy your beautiful home.
I love that she is so excited that she is almost whispering.
Glad you enjoyed it!
