Sandy is one of the best characters in the show and one of the best female Nickelodeon characters in general. So it pains me that they did her movie dirty. She was one of the only characters who didn’t go too far as much as all the male characters did (especially Seasons 6-8). Sandy deserves respect ✊🏽
Blame Paramount. The thing is that i feel most of the reviews as using this movie as a means to justify their opinions of the later seasons of the show when as a whole when i feel like that's pretty disingenuous to the gems that came out from Seasons 12-14. @@prowolf633 I’m going to stop you right there and say Sandy became an amoral scientist on par with Plankton of all characters, and just like Squidward, acted all the time like she was surrounded by idiots, and sometimes did really stupid things like destroy Jellyfish fields in a fit of rage. Congrats Spongebob, you’ve managed to make literally every main character not named Gary incredibly unlikeable.
A show "dying" is mostly to do with seasonal rot. Happens when writing starts to get weaker, characters get flanderized, series jumping the shark, etc. same case with franchises which can only go for so long that they overstay their welcome.
You need sequel series to counter seasonal rots. Like A new wish is amazing and like some of the best Fairly odd parents. More of these shows that've gone on for so long need that sequel. Like a new Simpson series where they aged up the characters or a new spongebob series that starts fresh while still being in universe. (and good)
10:24 Funny how that's true yet in the movie she sings “my speciality is marine biology, so I knew Bikini Bottom was the place for me”. The movie literally forgets core things about the show.
I know it’s not the case, but I like the idea that Paramount wasn’t even willing to put this on their service. Somehow Netflix just took this off their hands.
That is genuinely a fucking insult to Cosmic Shake considering that game's character models don’t look disgusting and has expressive animations for a low-budget licensed kids' game
@@shamaboy11 This movie’s human world reminds me of a bizarro version of those rare Spongebob movie tv spots where they interviewed supposed superfanatics of the show - the marching band, the teenage girls, the mom and her kids, the “girl and her boyfriend” sitting outside the movie theater, the movie theater guy and the usher getting stung by jellyfish except there it felt genuine where the human world here feels…unsettling. Like, we’re not supposed to play in it because it’s meant for display only. Bravo, Netflix, you’ve created a scenario where even the humans feel like they’re supposed to be meant for sale, and I thought Out of Water had this problem.
It gets EVEN worse when you realize A New Wish, a sequel series to Fairly OddParents, paid more respect to the franchise and its fans than this Texas-sized piece of shit did to the Spongebob franchise.
Im personally going to choose to believe that the reason the movie is such a dumpster fire is that the writers where having actually good ideas to expand on the original episode, while still being itself, and then they heard the sound of thunder and the disembodied voice of a suit saying "heard you were being original"
This movie might be the breaking point for my tolerance for how Nickelodeon treats SpongeBob as a character. He doesn't feel like the SpongeBob I was familiar with. He feels like The Joker as a toddler.
FR I'm not even a SpongeBob fan but having a fun wholesome character that literally MADE the show as well as made you a ton of money and making a scene in your movie about said character genuinely enjoying the smell of shit is... a choice 💀
Spongebob’s been dead for a while, ever since Nickelodeon learned that they can have characters make baby noises and just reference old episodes forever and people will STILL eat that up and say it’s good.
I feel like an accurate way to describe how this movie is the death of SpongeBob would be "this is the final step Paramount has taken to rip any sort of charm and soul out of SpongeBob as a brand and reduce it into complete corporate slop."
one of the parts that pissed me off was in the beginning when spongebob says “and all my streaming videos on demand, i cant demand them anymore” it might not seem like much but that pissed me off so fucking much. like ive been watching spongebob for years he would NEVER say that-
I believe that even if Hillenburg was alive and didn't die from ALS, he would eventually give up on the series. The same way Matt Greoning and Seth McFarlane did with their shows.
Spongebob's characterization being blissfully unafraid of actual danger is especially jarring especially since you consider the fact that there are multiple episodes of the early seasons based on him being afraid of something
Y'know, I used to honestly really hate how the older episodes, the best episodes, of Spongebob had somewhat of a perhaps fuzzy look and didn't look as though they were made with the latest technology (probably cuz they weren't). Now all of the new Spongebob seasons are smooth and no longer share this old-affect and yet, I realize how much more I love the old ones in comparison..
I honestly like more faded, natural colors of the older episodes (unsure whether it's due to tech or a style choice) more than the hyper/brighter color scheme of the newest episodes. I think this is more of an overall modern cartoon change though.
That shot of Sandy getting really close to the camera, which happens at 37:58 in addition to a couple other times in the video. activates my fight or flight response. It's so uncomfortable to have her get up in my face like that. Feels like Cocomelon if you ask me.
No shit, I was on a 4Chan thread that was going over this movie's concept art that leaked back in 2023, and when it got the black cyborg chick, so many people were losing their minds due to how uncanny it was.
If you combine Patrick & Sandy's dynamic into a mischievous trickster who pretends to be none the wiser to mess with people, you get something even more fun than either of these dynamic alone. "The scenemo & the nerd"
38:02 Ok sorry to break the mood, but can I just say that anyone can take this version/style of Plankton and make this mf into a horror game character- those finger nails- no- those CLAWS are both cool and can be very menacing if someone used that Plankton for horror related things. Am I wrong?
If Sandy was going to be the main character of her own movie. They should've made a prequel of how she got into Bikini Bottom, and SpongeBob is just a there. Didn't add anything to the story whatsoever, and the budget of this movie is so terrible! Really don't know what this franchise went wrong to begin with. They really been flanderized here.
This movie is heartbreaking to me. I'm a sucker for SpongeBob and Sandy going on adventures together. Pre-Hibernation Week is my all time favourite episode. You'd think I'd eat it all up. The premise sounds amazing: Bikini Bottom is hoisted out of the ocean and placed into an aquarium so Sandy and SpongeBob have to go to the surface to get it back. It has a genuinely strong opening. The moment the two get to Texas, the plot takes a nosedive. I've read fanfics about SpongeBob meeting Sandy's family. "Spandy" shippers outdid the official showrunners. I swear to God, the whole movie feels like Kaz (the writer) is taking advantage of shoehorning his fetishes into an official product and getting paid for it. The only parts of the movie I remember is when SpongeBob sniffs poo and Sandy gets bitten by a snake and caused an explosion of inflation porn.
The Fact Nickelodeon Released A Property Involving & Enjoying Feet Just A Few Months After The Quiet On Set Documentary Is Just The Epitome Of "What Are You Thinking"
Very poor timing. Also I'm pretty sure the animation side of Nick doesn't have the same people associated with the live action side. But yeah i agree it's a bad look overall.
Apparently this movie was planned and pitched while Hillenburg was still alive and loosening his stance on SpongeBob Spin offs. But damn this somehow felt like the most rushed hack job of a movie they could make. And it doesn’t even feel like they tried. I could forgive the movie more if they tried to do anything new like recent seasons. It’s as you said, it’s a previous episode Texas done worse. I can also give the 3rd movie a pass because despite being a repeat of “Have You Seen This Snail” and the 1st movie they tried bringing new things to the table related to the story. Love or hate Camp Coral, it was something. Despite being Sandy’s movie and adding this circus part of her backstory, they did nothing to expand why she wanted to go underwater anyway and I felt nothing in return. They try to make it seem like Sandy and the Wanda Sykes lady with the Geroge Lopez Show bobble-head are the same, but couldn't even give us a motivation as to why Sandy became interested in Sea Life to wanna live in Bikini Bottom to justify this lame "we're not so different" monologue.
Heck I could try to make a interesting plot episode (or movie) than this! I’ve been throwing around this idea that sounds interesting than this (if you wanna hear about it!)
@@calebpribyl5152 sure lay it on us. Steve Reviews also had a good idea I thought should have, at the very least been a part of this movie, but again, that would be doing SOMETHING, and that was apparently too much for Nickelodeon to want to allow the staff to do with this bomb.
Is it bad that I'm a little disappointed that Steven Hillenburg let Spongebob go into this direction since the production of 3rd movie and onwards, despite his unfortunate passing?
@@empeanutson I don't think the series' direction is as bad as people are making it out to be based on stuff he said a decade before his death. @@koichidignitythief7429 Yeah, it's interesting how Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie was thought up during a session of pitching ideas for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run so technically Stephen Hillenburg was aware or at least alive when the idea of a Sandy movie first came up. Although, he wasn't alive when the film was materialized or completed in 2023 according to the credits.

That villain being a cartoon robot with a real human head superimposed over it is just plain creepy. Idk how, it worked better in Sharkboy and Lavagirl, but it just doesn't look right here 💀💀💀
The SpongeBob movies might have the most tragic decline in villain quality. Dennis, Plankton, and the Cyclops were perfect villains in the first film The villains in every other film just sucked. Edit: Ok, Burgerbeard wasn't awful, but he was pretty generic and bland.
The plankton movie has an amazing villain. With out spoiling much Karen is the main villain of the movie and she plays her role really well. Best villain we has since the first movie
The backstory scene in pretty much every scene involving the main villain gave me flashbacks to this weird movie that was kids as superheroes and it was a spin-off of sharkboy and lavagirl. The entirety of the villain and anything, including her, had the production quality of a sharkboy and lava girl movie
Spongebob literally feels like 3-4 different shows to me (Spongebob as a character applies to this too). Seasons 1-3: Consists of a chill guy thats a bit naive/childish. Filled with different characters with defining traits that are not their sole personality (more complex/not one-note). Seasons 4-5 (unsure whether this one fuses with other seasons): Characters start to become more simple/one-note. Spongebob gets louder, more dramatic, and annoying. Seasons 6-9.5: Characters are pretty much reduced to 1 or 2 traits turnt up to an 11 (said traits are their whole character) Spongebob is pretty much stupified/infantilized to an exteme to the point where you question how he functions. Seasons 9.5-Current: Sugar-high, hyper show that really needs to take a moment to breathe (haven't seen a lot of these seasons so I can't really give an accurate review). Very hyper LooneyToons-esc feel where there are constant bright colors, movements, dramatic expressions, etc. Don't get me wrong, each season has it moments (some WAY more than others), but it's clear to see how much the writing has changed over the years.
I think most of the Netflix kids' content since the beginning of this decade feel like it's either appealing exclusively to a pre-school audience or the writers of these shows and movies don't how to write more consistent stories that everbody would follow. All of their recent serialized shows, such as MLP: Make Your Mark and Sonic Prime, felt like not even the characters were keeping up with the plot and nothing mattered until either the season premieres or finales.
Sure they made her scientific interest more prominent in season 4, but the episodes centered around that like Chimps Ahoy, SquidBob TentaclePants, and Squidtastic Voyage. But were they bad episodes? I don’t really think so, as they made for interesting plots and stories.
I'm glad you pointed out how unfocused SpongeBob was after the original creator left. Even as a fan of SpongeBob as a kid I could notice a lack of direction and an inability to commit to the ideas that the writers tried to go for.
Growing up I always loved “The Splinter” and “House Fancy”, so I’m very happy thanks to this movie they’re no longer considered the worst of SpongeBob.
Okay, I’m willing to let the stupid plot and Flanderization slide, but…. The inflation, poop-sniffing, and pool scene involving SpongeBob tickling strangers’ feet just rubbed me the wrong way. Who the heck thought that was acceptable for a kids movie?
With SpongeBob, I just say there are two versions; - Hilgenberg's SpongeBob: Season 1 to 3 + the movie. - Nick's SpongeBob: Whatever they are doing after that. That way I just don't feel disappointed or surprised on how low the franchise has gone (and keep going), while also ignoring the retcons and tone-shifts the company keeps wanting to push.
No don’t compare season 4 to season 5-onward that is completely not true season 4 belongs with the OG series you can’t tell me that have you seen this snail, wishing well, krusty towers, new leaf and many more episodes don’t feel like classic SpongeBob. Season 5-onward this statement is true spongebob season 4 try to have heart of the OG series while season 5-onward main joke is gross out humor showing their skins, dark jokes that don’t feel like spongebob like planton wanting to die or the joke squidward wanting to die in are you happy now. Season 4 doesn’t act anywhere close to season 5 and onwards hell even with out of character moments SpongeBob or Patrick will admit what they did was wrong in later seasons they don’t care if squidward is in pain such as great examples pat sitter pat where patrick wanted to burn gary!? Or choir boys where SpongeBob told squidward to shut up when jellyfishes are stinging him. You can’t compare season 4 to later seasons cause season 4 spongebob acts completely different to season 5-onward. Spongebob in season 4 would not blame gary for hurting someone the fact spongebob care about gary when he ran away and spend all day even skipping work/depression just to find gary while season 6 spongebob seeing gary being hurt from puffy fluffy and blames him for no reason.
I would argue that that death, or the franchise ending would be a good thing to most franchises. A show ending on a high note is better than being dragged out like some clingy Dr. Frankenstein won't stop trying to inject more life to a dying show. That's what drama queens forget about shows that get dragged out like this. It's less dying then it is being dragged too thin, like butter on too much bread. Granted "Dead to me" is an expression that they might be trying to invoke. In which someone does something so awful that the people related to that person no longer want anything to do with them, and treat that relationship ending as final as death.
14:36 - If I had a nickel for each time today I've randomly come across the "Stupid Sexy Flanders" joke, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird it's happened twice.
13:12 I kept mentioning how Spongebob is a complete braindead moron here and in most of the modern seasons, that Tom Kenny announced that Spongebob is AUTISTIC, and how its a "superpower"
Sponge Out of Water and Camp Coral were merely just the the wounding shots of the SpongeBob Franchise, The Sandy Cheek's Movie was the final shot which killed it off for good. As AVGN would say it's the "Shit Caked Baby Wipe That Broke The Septic Tank".
a character being reduced to only 1 or 2 traits is pretty common with the new gen who hate multi faceted characters and would prefer things to be black and white. Also the new gen want to be labeled and label themselves as so many things so it's their defining trait. I'm gay les pan zer/zim shit, no real personality other than the label they give themselves. IM TRANS GUYS LOOK AT ME!!!" yeah so the simplification of a multi level character like Sandy isnt new and pretty obvious. another example is how stupid and lame Nu Star Trek is compared to older stuff like TOS and TNG.
I heard Derek Drymon who worked closely with Steve(RIP Stephen Hillenberg) during the first 3 seasons and Movie as Creative Director is in charge of the 4th Theatrical Movie where the Flying Dutchman is the main villain. I heard many more of the writers and crew from the Classic Era are returning for the 4th movie too.
8:24 the thing i find so interesting is whenever people use ned Flanders the guy the term named after i always see people say completely different answers as to what he's become Like there's your's where you said he's just jesus Christ but ive also seen people say he just become the no fun crazy Christians while ive also seen people call him just the neighbor Its like people agreed he became a one note character but nobody agrees on what his personality is now

Hillenberg's brief return was akin to terminal lucidity. Not many shows get that, and it was a "sign of hope", but unfortunately it was brief and here we are around the grave of something that we had already lost hope for long ago.

The second movie has some of my favorite moments from SpongeBob ever to me it's a close second to the first one@@iheartericcartman
This movie had could've been just okay but it was treated like Ruby Gillman where Dreamworks didn't give a shit about the actual product.

(and good)

The first season was made traditionally, the other 2 were done digitally

Seasons 9.5-Current:
Sugar-high, hyper show that really needs to take a moment to breathe (haven't seen a lot of these seasons so I can't really give an accurate review). Very hyper LooneyToons-esc feel where there are constant bright colors, movements, dramatic expressions, etc.

You know it's bad when Deadpool and Wolverine came out the same year as this and became MUCH MORE quotable and hilarious than this.
the Sandy Cheeks movie is the WORST SpongeBob movie ever made
This might be the worst thing to come out of the entire franchise
THAT THUMBNAIL THOUGH-
12:08 I just love how "got em'!" is just the thing you say after making a barely passible pun on a name.
