- In this video I'm trying out the Borbon By Extinct Audio.
This is a small handmade ribbon mic from the UK. It has a rich warm sound with an incredible output level.
The BoRbon was recorded using a Neumann MT48 audio interface, apart from sometimes doing some very minimal EQ no other processing was used in the signal chain.

Beautiful Tone and Design!
Even over YT the genuine tones of this mic in the room is absolutely lovely. Sounds radio ready in an instant.
I like the simplicity of the design. Sounds lovely. I hope they can make them fast enough I want one!
Nice music BTW...
4:32 Would love to hear the whole banjo piece!
Using two in that configuration sounds superb!
Thanks for the comment. Oh yeah, I got a little too close to the mic with my vocals I think, I had to roll off a little of the low end. But apart from that I’m really happy with the results 👍
Amazing video, amazing performance, amazing artist, amazing microphone. I finished a whole bag of chips (US) just watching this thing. OK, I’ll get out the piggy bank, nothing like the joy of anticipation!
Thanks!! Glad you enjoyed the video so much 😀👍
Interesting, I have had a play with old Ribbon mics in the studio, too expensive for me, but liked the sound, good video.
Shure bros. once made a little ribbon that was about the same size or not much bigger. A standalone tabletop mic. They used the same mic body for dynamic and crystals as far as I recall. Only way to tell was the data plate. I got one many years ago but as I recall the ribbon was blown out and I was too young to get any ideas about a fix. I doubt many were made with the ribbon mic inside. As I have not seen any more in person. Body was just a two piece cast metal shell with a wider foot base.
Wow such a great sound Fabian! Do you normally use a signal booster or anything to get the volume you need and also the correct impedance for the microphone?
The only ribbon I have is a really cheap SE, but I've come to favour it over my expensive tube mic. I find a lot of mics over emphasise the high end and transients
Nice! Yeah absolutely! It’s also good to have a ribbon option for instruments that are thin or a little harsh sounding, using a ribbon can really warm them up.
You're so talented .. it's a joy to see your craft!
Thanks so much!! Glad you like the video 👍
Hey, thanks for doing a video on these ribbon mics, Fabian! They look and sound fantastic. I'd love to pick up a pair one of these days. You said the output was high for passive ribbons, and I know you're a fan of the Triton fet preamps. Was it necessary to use an inline preamp to get enough gain?
Hi, thanks for the question! No I didn’t have to use the Triton Preamps at all when using the BoRbon 👍
Sounds really good. Great demo too. You said it has a high output- does it still need a preamp?
Hey Geej, thanks!! Oh yeah it still needs a preamp. Ribbon mics don’t require phantom power though, but they’re famous for having a weaker output than condensers and so usually require a decent preamp to get enough gain but the BoRbon was giving me a good signal even when using my little portable recorder with it 👍
@@FabianHollandGuitar I don't own a ribbon mic (bit pricey for me!), but when I've seen them being used they’ve always had a preamp. Interesting that this worked with H4n pro. Perhaps I should start saving up... 💸🤑
Wow!
Have you tried a Royer R-10? How does it compare?
Hi, thanks for the question. I haven’t tried the R-10 but I have used the R-121, it was a while ago and I just tried it briefly at a friends studio, it also sounded great if I remember, it’s also a lot more expensive than the BoRbon. I’d like to try the R-10 though.
I wonder how much it costs ? Fuck it.
