    I "tried" to buy a really cheap PC from my local Cashies in circa 2004. Asked for proof it powered on, and the salesperson proceeded to plug it in and flick the voltage select switch on the back of the PSU while trying to power it on and popped it... It was some old Compaq Deskpro with a Celeron? They only wanted like $30 for it even then.

    • @brostenen
      @brostenen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahhh... Yes. Compaq used bad PSU's at some point, to save money, when they began to loose market share. They were wonderfull machines from 386 era to late 486 era.

    Pin 1 or the red stripe wire always goes adjacent to the power connector on the drive, and is labelled on the board. That way you can be sure you have your IDE cables the right way around. If you get the floppy drive cable backwards, the drive light stays on.

      @@johncate9541 Really? Interesting. Maxtor drives from that era are absolutely terrible, every single one has horrendous bearings that sound like a train wreck and it hurts your ears. I avoid those 1995-2001 models when I can, they always get terrible bearings and end up getting bad sectors. Now don't get me wrong Maxtor made some great models. I love the 6L250R0 I have, made in 2006. I also have a 200GB model and it is great. Well, I guess they are made by Seagate so whoops haha. Their Cheyenne series is great from the early 90's. The 7040AT, 7080AT, and the 7120AT. Anything that looks like the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 60 in my mind is not when Maxtor was making quality but rather quantity. Gawd. Cashies. Yeah. And the '90s retail and clerical training that would refer to the case as the CPU. It's a throwback to TTL-based systems that predate the microprocessor - the CPU would span multiple chips and so the entire case and contents would be the "CPU", while the hard drive would be some great washing machine looking thing off to the side. Of course, that terminology was dated by the 1980s, what with 8-bit microprocessors already having entered the home, and 16-bit microprocessors performing office duties in the late '70s.
    ...and workplace training hadn't caught up by the '90s. I can remember facepalming in a clerical training course held on Currie Street in the CBD when they introduced the case as the "CPU" IN 1999!

    The box of Eidetic floppy disks caught my eye. I sent a box of 5.25 inch Eidetic floppies to a colleague in Kansas City a few months ago. She and her husband are mentoring a youngster who’d heard of them, but never seen one. I still have quite a bit of old software on both disk sizes: PageMaker 4, Sprint 1.01, MS Word 1.0, Wordstar… Time to knock together an old Socket 7 machine for a bit of fun. I recall building two using 400 MHz AMD CPUs and the then new SDRAM memory back in the day. They were more exciting than my new 24 core Threadripper that’s due for deliver mid-January.
