when i played this game for the first time i thought it was ungodly easy until i got to the (actual) final boss and legit struggled for like 30 minutes
I found the final boss as easy as the previous ones in this title. Just get far enough so his attacks cannot hit you, turn around the boss by spamming the sht out of the guns and he's dead by pretty much pressing one or two buttons
I've got anxiety and ptsd by watching this video. I started the DMC saga in release order, and this game mentally exhausted me more than the first one because of how boring it is, and I played both campaigns because crippling depression I guess. Thank god I played it in the HD Collection so I could try DMC3, because otherwise I would've dropped the series.
Dmc2 isn’t as bad once you realize how bad the development was. It had really good ideas but bad execution, it has some really good moments that were overshadowed by all of the bad and the gaps in the story. The story is interesting but isn’t really shown to well and has its problems.
Vergil: "...You're lying or you're delusional." Dante: "I swear to Dad, bro! A bit after I beat Mundas, my doppelganger broke free, raided my closet and ran around acting like an edgy boy for a couple months. I only learned when this redhead with knives showed up looking for him." Vergil: "Doppelgangers don't work like that!" Dante: "Well, apparently mine does and he is pure cringe! The dipstick was flipping a coin like he's freaking Two-Face!" Vergil: "...That is pretty cringe, yes."
The developers have come out and said that the correct order is three, one, anime, 2, 4, and 5. It's a natural progression when you think about it. It devil May cry 2 is Dante at his lowest and most depressed.
You can see at every point that the development time was much too short because to replace senior producers after half of the development wasn't a good idea either Itsuno was trying to make atleast something good out of the game when it was already to late for it. Considering how good DMC5 is you can't say this man don't know what he was doing. DMC2 should get a complete remake to justify its existence if I wasn't wrong Itsuno had only 4 or 5 months left when he was hired to "fixing" this mess before its release and capcom didn't wont spend more money into a completely restart of the project. The original developer studios goal was to make the areas 8-9 times bigger as in DMC1 but they haven't had in mind to give them a good purpose. Itsuno even hinted that the wouldn't call DMC2 a canon game anymore as he said 5 is a direct predecessor to 4 and if you go with the old timeline 2 was the last game and 5 had to play afterwards which had would fit as dante looks old in both games in DMC2 he drives into the last fight with a motorcycle and in 5 he comes back with it his hairstyle was kinda simular. Anyways I would like to see a full fletched out and improve remake of DMC2 giving the game some sort redemption it should deserve. And anyways good video!
I've seen a bunch of videos on DMC 2's development and honestly it feels like the game was doomed from the beginning because of Capcom's decisions, I would also like to see a remake of this game because it has a lot of potential. More positives: Lucia and Trish(yes, you get to play as Trish before DMC4SE made it cool). One more negative: gameplay wise, it's half the speed of DMC1, and the infested chopper is not the only strictly airborne boss to be a damn annoying chore.
There is one thing I think is kinda good, the majin devil trigger, but you won't ever see it since you will kill everything with your guns and the normal devil trigger is already op I also think infested chopper and infested tank are good bosses to show how absolutely bad this game is even then they weren't really good at that either
I have a soft spot for this game since I was horrible at gaming when I was younger and the absolute dogshit gameplay helped me a lot. That and I actually enjoy the enemy designs for this game. Even the chopper, I really think the idea of a demonic virus/microorganism taking over a vehicle/building etc. can be really cool if done right.
Yeah the boss graphic design is really cool ! And some missions had cool gimmicks (ok, like 2 of them if I remember). For all the shit it gets it's pretty decent if you don't try 100%ing it and added some major functionalities for future DMCs (and even does a couple better than DMC4 IMO, so it does the rest very much worse).
My main problem with this game is that it’s pathetically easy, then out of nowhere the final boss becomes difficult in its first phase, but the second phase is surprisingly weaker than the first one.
Worst part about 2 is that even if you go out of your way to not use guns all the enemies die in 3 hits so you cant do any combos on them unless they're end-game health sponges like the infested tanks,

About dante's depression in 2 I like to headcanon that he just didn't get over killing his brother in 1 yet I just like to think that he didn't just shrug it off and continued his happy-go-lucky behavior immediately after this clearly traumatic event Even if in the first game itself he was more upset about the death of a mommy clone than his literal brother dying from his own hand. I mean he didn't cry his eyes out over Nelo Angelo... But he was supposed to be the one to fill Trish's dark soul with LIIIIIGHT Dante, I get that you loved your mom, but it's not her? And Nelo Angelo IS your literal brother who YOU YOURSELF unknowingly killed? And he even wasn't a confirmed asshole at that point? I mean, now we know that Vergil killed a whole town with his tower just before the enslavement from Mundus, but then it was kinda implied that he was a slave from the moment their mom was killed? Like, he at some point was implied to be enslaved AS A KID. WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU, DANTE? In short, I still think that the potential trauma that Dante sure was supposed to get from killing his brother never was properly addressed in the games. When dmc1 came out I think it was implied that Dante last saw him when they were children. Which is kinda fucked up, because that would mean that vergil was enslaved by mundus and turned into Nelo Angelo when he was like 8. But even if judging by the whole timeline as we know it now, hasn't Dante cried about vergil in 3, when he jumped into hell to stay there in the end? Like, he didn't even actually die then, so I guess Dante loves his brother no matter the assholeness. So it's still weird that in 1 he is more upset about Trish dying, than about killing vergil, sorry.
I think there are certainly some positives and I’d even say improvements from the first game such as dodging felt a bit better, Dante’s design was awesome (might even be his best) the music is pretty good, Lucia is a cool character and here and there Dante had some pretty good moments and lines (my favourites being “your swan song will” and “here’s your crown) That being said…yeah…DMC 2 is definitely the worst one in the franchise. To me it’s pretty mediocre but not the worst game out there. Man DMC 3 was such an improvement though, still the best in the series imo even better than 5
The very last scene with Dante killing the last boss was absolutely epic. A few more good things for me would be the environments, while I know they do suck, I like the idea of the rural, urban, and corporate/lab environments in a dmc game with some sort of demon organic virus going around... While it borrows a bit much from RE, its pretty bumping imo and I did think it was cool. I actually didn't mind the story after finishing Lucia's campaign- mostly Lucia's standpoint made it more interesting. While still bad I genuinely was a little engaged with Lucia... The most engaged I got in the story throughout the entire playthrough. I hope we see Lucia again, I liked her design, ninja red haired darkskin accented tomboy of my dreams. I think her origin and background are cool, and she has a nice style and flair with the former demon bodyguard/ninja assassin lady.

The way he killed Argosax was badass Another good thing I forgot to mention is that it introduced rebellion, there were health bars for the enemy, some other new swords were cool and bloody palace. And I’m ngl sometimes it’s kinda fun to use the guns for how overpowered they are (though it still makes the game too easy and it’s dumb that a pistol is stronger than a sword) Lucia was also really cool, she’s underrated and I hope she comes back as well honestly. While not as cool as Trish or Lady imo she has potential and deserves a second chance. Plus her gameplay at least felt better than Dante’s. Also the story of this game isn’t actually that bad, it’s just the way it was executed. Arius is not that good of a villain but ironically I still kinda like him. He’s funny when he gets angry lol
@@ShadowDante7 Yeah, there were a few shiny parts of the game, Lucia's story would have been better without the underwater segment, I literally beat my desk in anger lmao, hated being stuck underwater at that dumb puzzle. Personally while I think the weapons looked cool Im pretty convinced there was no reason to use them at alll. But new guns were cool at least, besides it just making the game easier. Arius as a villain to me worked better from Lucia's perspective since he created her, but even then he was kind of silly, I liked the idea of him though, the cocky and pompous rich demon guy whose after infinite power. The way he sits and drinks in the middle of a bossfight would have been cool if it wasnt that you can just run up to him and beat him to death lol... Or shoot him to death more like. Lady is my favorite character unironically so Lucia doesnt top her for me, but I think Lucia has a lot of potential to be cool.

Who knows if she’ll return, but I think she deserves a second chance
@@ShadowDante7 I agree that Lucia deserves another chance, she was apparently in the book that takes place before dmc5, helping Dante, so maybe we'll see her in 6? Not sure. I think the demonic vehicles were a cool idea with really bad execution, I honestly have no EARTHLY IDEA how they put these enemies in the game without once thinking they may not be fun to fight. The tanks? They can only do anything to you if you are far away, so just sit up to it and spam your attacks! It doesn't have any countermeasures besides ADDS (additional enemy spawns) to stop you... But you can ignore the enemies too by just jumping around the tank since Dante starts with double jump (and so does Lucia) you can just clear the whole thing. Even then you can probably just pop DT and ignore every attack thrown your way and kill the tank! So many things could have been done to make it better, the opening was... Sort of hype, the blackout before the explosion was lame. The helicopter? I could see a lot of possibilities it could have been cool, so I can't figure out why they thought putting you on a rooftop and spamming the fire button while dodging the occasional missiles was a good idea, they could have at least made it have small hp so you can just get it over with- it takes so long. I can see why so many people just quit the game after that boss, I was literally so drained of energy! Arius drinking wine in the middle of the fight could have been a cool reminder of his pompous attitude, he's a rich cunt afterall! Would have been way cooler if they put his ninja bodyguards to use more, maybe every time he does that he has like 2 of those guards guarding him tightly while enemy spawns... While its not great design, as most bossfights where the actual boss takes a backseat and has a bunch of goons fight you instead tends to be a bore- it would have ATLEAST looked better, and would have suited him better while making more use of what is literally Lucia's origin, maybe helping players realize more that they are similar to Lucia. Instead he just sits there while you wail on him lmao.
Fun fact: DMC 2 on the HD Collection for PC has a game breaking bug. When you try to exit the game with alt-tab, it crashes the entire game, meaning you have to restart your pc.

I belive that lore wise Dante seems like he has chronic depression in this game is because he missed vergil so much that he tried his absolute damndest to to emulate his dear brother but could only come up with what an edgy 6 year old would consider motivated at best.
The first time I played this game and fought infested chopper I had like a literal smidgen of health in the chase sequence to the top of the tower where you fight the boss. So I was like Im gonna die if I dont heal so I DT'd and turned into sparda or some shit, literally dmc 5 dante sdt and started murdering literally everything with ease to the point where dante actually started auto aiming the boss offscreen and doing like a fifth of the infested choppers health with a single umbra orb. I literally managed to kill the boss before I was supposed to fight it accidentally. Little did I know that the game would just be like fuck it and make the boss reappear out of thin air...
I remember how for years I just ignored this game listening to all the hate online. Dmc 5 made me want to replay all the games. I got the dmc2 and I really enjoyed it. It’s the only one I got platinum.
not a fan of the reboot, but at least the gameplay was somewhat engaging. DMC2's gameplay can be summed up on either "slow-ass and repetitve sword combos that never changes" or the infamous "Smash Square/X to win" game, its that bad.

Then the director of DMC1, which only worked for less than six months before DMC2 was going to be released, didnt want to be known as the Guy that created DMC2 and asked Capcom If he could fully develop the third game, despite dmc2 not even being his creation, to this day no one knows who the hell was the original director of dmc2, but thats not the point: dmc only lives as a franchise because of dmc3, If dmc2 didnt sell well enough or Capcom refused to greenlight the third entry, then the series would've died on the Second game, because despite Its Sales (you can thank hype for them), reviews were even worse than dmc:dmc reviews, and the game itself feels and plays worse than dmc:dmc, thats How low that game was: even an mediocre Reboot was better than that game. Also dmc:dmc would've never killed dmc as a whole, Its Just that Capcom only brings back new entries on their existing franchises when they see demand from players, If dmc:dmc performed well enough critically then they would've definetely created a Sequel for the Reboot, but they Saw what players wanted, and greenlighted dmcV around 2012 - 2014, so no: dmc:dmc would've never killed the franchise, DMC2 almost did, dmc:dmc did not.
The only good things we got from this is the soundtrack, Bloody Palace, Trish(though she sadly became locked unless you beat DMD; her moveset was later implemented into DMC4SE), Devil May Cry 3 which saved the series, the same location used for the prequel novel to DMC5 Before The Nightmare(it is how Dante got Balrog, the infernal armored gauntlets and boots that appear in Devil May Cry 5 as brawling weapons); the DMC2 exclusive cast appear and are mentioned in the same novel, and Dante in Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne. We couldn't help but thank PAL Region Atlus for giving us the iconic "featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series" badge sealed onto the case; the Legendary Devil Hunter also returns in the HD Remaster, albeit with the character's current VA Reuben Langdon, and unfortunately wasted as paid DLC(via Maniax Pack)unless you buy the SMT3 Nocturne HD Remaster DLC Bundle(costs $59.99 in US monetary units compared to the game without all the add-ons included/purchased, $39.99 in US monetary units).
Is this game still canon? I recall Capcom saying it takes place “far” in the timeline, but these days they seemed to have retconned that & it’s barely even considered to have happened plot-wise
They actually confirmed it's canon when DMC 5 came out and swapped the order of the timeline, it was supposed to be the last one chronologically but now it happens before 4 for some reason, just don't expect it to ever have any connection to the other games for obvious reasons. So it's like it is non-canon anyway and i really prefer it that way.

Funny fact, when I was a little kid a friend of my mom gave me his copy of Devil May Cry 2 saying she didn't play it anymore. I fell in love with the series because of Devil May Cry 2 and I acknowledge that all the other ones are infinitely superior to it but I can never bring myself to hate it because that was my introduction to the series and it only got better from there.

I have a unique relationship with the game, what with it being part of my early childhood and I played it after dmc3 (and special edition), so I had this nod of "Oh, he kept all the power-ups so guns are just that strong." Keep in mind I was a child and had the idea that he had been on quite a few jobs on the same caliber as the Temen-ni-gru event so whatever non-boss enemies would be a cake walk. I have two copies of this game for the ps2 and the cases are just different enough to make me think there was some sort of difference between them but one got water damaged and the other doesn't seem to have the same non-difficulty I remember. Even stranger, the HD dmc2 is easier than those discs (it could be how my hands fit around the controllers differently). That aside, it's very strange how the voice active shifts halfway through the game for Aruis. He goes from calm and ready to do billionaire demon sacrifices to Saturday morning cartoon villain. Knowing what I know now, it has to do with the development of the game starting before classic dmc was released and it was mainly developed by people who had previously only worked on arcade games, being moved to this project because of the increasing success of home consoles. One mechanic that highlights these changes never brought up again was the customizable Devil Trigger amulet, which never made a return. The "Majin Devil trigger" or "Dire Devil Trigger" or "Old Sin Devil Trigger" was also neat but you had to get to low health in order to activate it so it was rare to ever get an opportunity to use it. Lastly, the final bosses for Dante were a little odd. What was Argosax? Why wasn't it mentioned more before the final fight? Why was Falcon part of the boss blob right before that? Why was there a corrupted Odin (Bolverk) boss fight in the level with twisting hallway designs?
I’ve played too much of this game recently (only for those super rare Steam achievements) and it’s complete and utter torture. I had to play past floor 9000 on bloody palace and that took me 5+ hours :(

You know, after having played Dmc2 myself (both characters) I have to say that I did not find the game as terrible as everyone claims it to be. But there are some rules that needs to be followed for the game to be actually somewhat enjoyable: 1. Stop using guns only. Yes, they can kill everything, but they make the game painfully boring. Instead, try to actually use the sword and actually use your entire moveset instead of standing still. You are literally making the game boring by yourself if you only use guns. 2. Try to learn the characters and get some style score, even though it is next to impossible to get anything higher than a C on the results screen in the styling category. 3. Play Lucia's part of the game. Honestly. She was so much more enjoyable to play around with, even though she is too a bit clunky. Her side explains the story a whole lot more too, honestly Dante does barely get anything explained at all. Also, whatever you do, GET THE F***ING BOW GUN IN MISSION 6 BEFORE ENDING IT, then you should be good otherwise. Stupid design decision to hide the only actually usable weapon for mission 7 in the mission before, so that you can risk missing it and save before you realize you missed an important item and can't go back to that mission. 4. Go into the game without any expectations for anything else other than it will be a clunky mess of a game, and enjoy whatever you can. Some missions and enemies will be a pain in the butt, but I do think the game has a few decent sides to it as well once you start moving past the flaws.
Honestly... I kinda liked it. But well yeah... The infested chopper and tanks and the puzzles... Argh that was awful Lucky that Dante is that handsome and dark in that game
Let me add 1 more positive thing. Dante's combo is cool when you combine sword with shotgun. However,it is badly implemented and I don't know when to use those move.
its useless trying to combo on this game either way, the team behind DMC2 did a mistake making the combos direction oriented instead of button combinations/timing, and still the combos available are pretty meh in comparison to DMC1's combo, which are limited but still pretty damn fun to use and powerful. Just spam your guns and you're fine, the only thing that will kill you if you do that is boredom, nothing else.
@@MtlPlyr oh true, but still my point about combo'ing in this game stands: enemies are too goddamn slow and gets stunned easily with Guns, you would be stupid to try to combo with your sword when Its riskier to get hit, and even If you do the combos are so slow and sluggish there's barely any satisfaction about doing them. Even the Stinger, which is the coolest attack in DMC is so stupidly boring and pathetic in dmc2. We can thank Capcom for their Smartass decision of greenlighting a sequel to dmc1 but letting another inexperienced team do the work of the original creator, this was the mess we got and even Capcom themselves wanted to forget this game was a thing.
I remember having to buy a controller specifically with a turbo function just to beat this game. Now, the game does have auto-fire if you hold down the square button, but using it is slow as hell compared to just spamming the button. TLDR; if a game requires you to buy a 3rd party controller to not give your hands carpal tunnel, then that game deserves to burn in hell for eternity.
Am i the only one who finish Dante and Lucia's campaign twice? I was about to start DMD/LMD/TMD in this game and i do not 100% hate it instead thinking what could've been if Itsuno had started working at DMC2 at the start of it's development.
I recently played DMC2 using the power of *cheats* to unlock higher difficulty modes and Trish (who plays like DMC1 Dante for the most part) from the start of the game. It made the game...Like, 10% better, I guess. Trish loses the cool gun tricks but gains way better melee combos, but that only emphasizes how much the game wants you to shoot things and punishes you for melee. It's harder, the enemies mostly feel better to fight but the bosses don't improve except for Phantom. Like the big fire minotaur goes from braindead simple to a Dark Souls boss, but like DS2 with janky hitboxes. Phantom was fun again but you could just play DMC1 instead lol. Basically what I'm saying is I made my DMC2 experience as good as possible and it was still meh at best.

The combat in DMC2 is boring, lifeless and lacks any sort of devil arms or depth, compared to DMC1. Granted, DMC1 only had Ifrit as a weapon with a different moveset from Force Edge/Alastor/Sparda, but it was already something. Dante is way out of character, it’s too easy, the guns are insanely overpowered to the point you can mash the shoot button to win, the bosses are uninspired, enemies can barely hit you, and every dang weapon has the same combos! It’s a travesty and even the devs have admitted that. It’s a good thing its story is totally disconnected from the series main storyline, so you can skip it entirely without missing a thing Dante just felt too "floaty" in DMC2. The melee attacks were way too slow compared to the first game, and you got ridiculous hangtime in the air. The game really just didn't feel good to play compared to original, and still sticks out compared to every game in the series (including the reboot). In terms of design, the game had too many aerial enemies in proportion to Dante's moveset. While they did greatly expand on Devil Trigger options, if you didn't have meter then you were pretty much stuck to using guns which is just boring. And it's not just regular enemies; a lot - if not a majority - of bosses were like this. Dante has NO personality. Combat is bland, unsatisfying and unengaging. Guns are a little too powerful, combo inputs are poor, acquired weapons are worse than a terrible joke and the enemies (while varied) can't do anything to Dante.
I recently went through the HD collection and yeah, Devil May Cry 2 is indeed the worst. It took all the difficulty from the first game and made it into a button mashing to easy win sort of game. The upgrades don't even feel remarkably stronger so there's no point in upgrading your weapons. The enemies and bosses are extreamly pathetic, you can litterally spam your pistols at range and win everytime. The story is rubbish and doesn't make that much sence. Play Devil May Cry 3 instead, it's way better.

I started the DMC saga in release order, and this game mentally exhausted me more than the first one because of how boring it is, and I played both campaigns because crippling depression I guess.
Thank god I played it in the HD Collection so I could try DMC3, because otherwise I would've dropped the series.
Yeah DMC 2 made me not want to play any Devil May Cry game for a while lol. Gotta start DMC 3 soon though...

Dmc2 isn’t as bad once you realize how bad the development was. It had really good ideas but bad execution, it has some really good moments that were overshadowed by all of the bad and the gaps in the story. The story is interesting but isn’t really shown to well and has its problems.

The developers have come out and said that the correct order is three, one, anime, 2, 4, and 5. It's a natural progression when you think about it. It devil May cry 2 is Dante at his lowest and most depressed.
Dante: "Heihachi, eat a snickers."

Dante: "You're not you when you're hungry."
You can see at every point that the development time was much too short because to replace senior producers after half of the development wasn't a good idea either Itsuno was trying to make atleast something good out of the game when it was already to late for it.
Considering how good DMC5 is you can't say this man don't know what he was doing. DMC2 should get a complete remake to justify its existence if I wasn't wrong Itsuno had only 4 or 5 months left when he was hired to "fixing" this mess before its release and capcom didn't wont spend more money into a completely restart of the project.
The original developer studios goal was to make the areas 8-9 times bigger as in DMC1 but they haven't had in mind to give them a good purpose.
Itsuno even hinted that the wouldn't call DMC2 a canon game anymore as he said 5 is a direct predecessor to 4 and if you go with the old timeline 2 was the last game and 5 had to play afterwards which had would fit as dante looks old in both games in DMC2 he drives into the last fight with a motorcycle and in 5 he comes back with it his hairstyle was kinda simular.
Anyways I would like to see a full fletched out and improve remake of DMC2 giving the game some sort redemption it should deserve.

I have a soft spot for this game since I was horrible at gaming when I was younger and the absolute dogshit gameplay helped me a lot. That and I actually enjoy the enemy designs for this game. Even the chopper, I really think the idea of a demonic virus/microorganism taking over a vehicle/building etc. can be really cool if done right.

Yeah the boss graphic design is really cool ! And some missions had cool gimmicks (ok, like 2 of them if I remember). For all the shit it gets it's pretty decent if you don't try 100%ing it and added some major functionalities for future DMCs (and even does a couple better than DMC4 IMO, so it does the rest very much worse).

My main problem with this game is that it’s pathetically easy, then out of nowhere the final boss becomes difficult in its first phase, but the second phase is surprisingly weaker than the first one.
Worst part about 2 is that even if you go out of your way to not use guns all the enemies die in 3 hits so you cant do any combos on them unless they're end-game health sponges like the infested tanks,

When dmc1 came out I think it was implied that Dante last saw him when they were children. Which is kinda fucked up, because that would mean that vergil was enslaved by mundus and turned into Nelo Angelo when he was like 8.
But even if judging by the whole timeline as we know it now, hasn't Dante cried about vergil in 3, when he jumped into hell to stay there in the end? Like, he didn't even actually die then, so I guess Dante loves his brother no matter the assholeness.
So it's still weird that in 1 he is more upset about Trish dying, than about killing vergil, sorry.

I think there are certainly some positives and I’d even say improvements from the first game such as dodging felt a bit better, Dante’s design was awesome (might even be his best) the music is pretty good, Lucia is a cool character and here and there Dante had some pretty good moments and lines (my favourites being “your swan song will” and “here’s your crown)
That being said…yeah…DMC 2 is definitely the worst one in the franchise. To me it’s pretty mediocre but not the worst game out there. Man DMC 3 was such an improvement though, still the best in the series imo even better than 5
The very last scene with Dante killing the last boss was absolutely epic.
A few more good things for me would be the environments, while I know they do suck, I like the idea of the rural, urban, and corporate/lab environments in a dmc game with some sort of demon organic virus going around... While it borrows a bit much from RE, its pretty bumping imo and I did think it was cool. I actually didn't mind the story after finishing Lucia's campaign- mostly Lucia's standpoint made it more interesting. While still bad I genuinely was a little engaged with Lucia... The most engaged I got in the story throughout the entire playthrough.
I hope we see Lucia again, I liked her design, ninja red haired darkskin accented tomboy of my dreams. I think her origin and background are cool, and she has a nice style and flair with the former demon bodyguard/ninja assassin lady.

Another good thing I forgot to mention is that it introduced rebellion, there were health bars for the enemy, some other new swords were cool and bloody palace. And I’m ngl sometimes it’s kinda fun to use the guns for how overpowered they are (though it still makes the game too easy and it’s dumb that a pistol is stronger than a sword)
Lucia was also really cool, she’s underrated and I hope she comes back as well honestly. While not as cool as Trish or Lady imo she has potential and deserves a second chance. Plus her gameplay at least felt better than Dante’s. Also the story of this game isn’t actually that bad, it’s just the way it was executed. Arius is not that good of a villain but ironically I still kinda like him. He’s funny when he gets angry lol

Personally while I think the weapons looked cool Im pretty convinced there was no reason to use them at alll. But new guns were cool at least, besides it just making the game easier.
Arius as a villain to me worked better from Lucia's perspective since he created her, but even then he was kind of silly, I liked the idea of him though, the cocky and pompous rich demon guy whose after infinite power. The way he sits and drinks in the middle of a bossfight would have been cool if it wasnt that you can just run up to him and beat him to death lol... Or shoot him to death more like.
Lady is my favorite character unironically so Lucia doesnt top her for me, but I think Lucia has a lot of potential to be cool.

My favourite characters are Dante (duh look at my name and profile) Vergil and Nero so Lucia wouldn’t top them for me. And personally Trish is my favourite female (though Lady is a close second) so Lucia doesn’t even top her for me either but she’s still really cool. Who knows if she’ll return, but I think she deserves a second chance

I think the demonic vehicles were a cool idea with really bad execution, I honestly have no EARTHLY IDEA how they put these enemies in the game without once thinking they may not be fun to fight.
The tanks? They can only do anything to you if you are far away, so just sit up to it and spam your attacks! It doesn't have any countermeasures besides ADDS (additional enemy spawns) to stop you... But you can ignore the enemies too by just jumping around the tank since Dante starts with double jump (and so does Lucia) you can just clear the whole thing. Even then you can probably just pop DT and ignore every attack thrown your way and kill the tank! So many things could have been done to make it better, the opening was... Sort of hype, the blackout before the explosion was lame.
The helicopter? I could see a lot of possibilities it could have been cool, so I can't figure out why they thought putting you on a rooftop and spamming the fire button while dodging the occasional missiles was a good idea, they could have at least made it have small hp so you can just get it over with- it takes so long. I can see why so many people just quit the game after that boss, I was literally so drained of energy!
Arius drinking wine in the middle of the fight could have been a cool reminder of his pompous attitude, he's a rich cunt afterall! Would have been way cooler if they put his ninja bodyguards to use more, maybe every time he does that he has like 2 of those guards guarding him tightly while enemy spawns... While its not great design, as most bossfights where the actual boss takes a backseat and has a bunch of goons fight you instead tends to be a bore- it would have ATLEAST looked better, and would have suited him better while making more use of what is literally Lucia's origin, maybe helping players realize more that they are similar to Lucia.
Instead he just sits there while you wail on him lmao.

Fun fact: DMC 2 on the HD Collection for PC has a game breaking bug. When you try to exit the game with alt-tab, it crashes the entire game, meaning you have to restart your pc.

The first time I played this game and fought infested chopper I had like a literal smidgen of health in the chase sequence to the top of the tower where you fight the boss. So I was like Im gonna die if I dont heal so I DT'd and turned into sparda or some shit, literally dmc 5 dante sdt and started murdering literally everything with ease to the point where dante actually started auto aiming the boss offscreen and doing like a fifth of the infested choppers health with a single umbra orb. I literally managed to kill the boss before I was supposed to fight it accidentally. Little did I know that the game would just be like fuck it and make the boss reappear out of thin air...

I remember how for years I just ignored this game listening to all the hate online. Dmc 5 made me want to replay all the games. I got the dmc2 and I really enjoyed it. It’s the only one I got platinum.

Then the director of DMC1, which only worked for less than six months before DMC2 was going to be released, didnt want to be known as the Guy that created DMC2 and asked Capcom If he could fully develop the third game, despite dmc2 not even being his creation, to this day no one knows who the hell was the original director of dmc2, but thats not the point: dmc only lives as a franchise because of dmc3, If dmc2 didnt sell well enough or Capcom refused to greenlight the third entry, then the series would've died on the Second game, because despite Its Sales (you can thank hype for them), reviews were even worse than dmc:dmc reviews, and the game itself feels and plays worse than dmc:dmc, thats How low that game was: even an mediocre Reboot was better than that game.
Also dmc:dmc would've never killed dmc as a whole, Its Just that Capcom only brings back new entries on their existing franchises when they see demand from players, If dmc:dmc performed well enough critically then they would've definetely created a Sequel for the Reboot, but they Saw what players wanted, and greenlighted dmcV around 2012 - 2014, so no: dmc:dmc would've never killed the franchise, DMC2 almost did, dmc:dmc did not.
The only good things we got from this is the soundtrack, Bloody Palace, Trish(though she sadly became locked unless you beat DMD; her moveset was later implemented into DMC4SE), Devil May Cry 3 which saved the series, the same location used for the prequel novel to DMC5 Before The Nightmare(it is how Dante got Balrog, the infernal armored gauntlets and boots that appear in Devil May Cry 5 as brawling weapons); the DMC2 exclusive cast appear and are mentioned in the same novel, and Dante in Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne. We couldn't help but thank PAL Region Atlus for giving us the iconic "featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series" badge sealed onto the case; the Legendary Devil Hunter also returns in the HD Remaster, albeit with the character's current VA Reuben Langdon, and unfortunately wasted as paid DLC(via Maniax Pack)unless you buy the SMT3 Nocturne HD Remaster DLC Bundle(costs $59.99 in US monetary units compared to the game without all the add-ons included/purchased, $39.99 in US monetary units).
Imagine Dante says later to Nero that the main villain in this game calls him “a villain of the week.”
Is this game still canon? I recall Capcom saying it takes place “far” in the timeline, but these days they seemed to have retconned that & it’s barely even considered to have happened plot-wise

They actually confirmed it's canon when DMC 5 came out and swapped the order of the timeline, it was supposed to be the last one chronologically but now it happens before 4 for some reason, just don't expect it to ever have any connection to the other games for obvious reasons. So it's like it is non-canon anyway and i really prefer it that way.

Funny fact, when I was a little kid a friend of my mom gave me his copy of Devil May Cry 2 saying she didn't play it anymore. I fell in love with the series because of Devil May Cry 2 and I acknowledge that all the other ones are infinitely superior to it but I can never bring myself to hate it because that was my introduction to the series and it only got better from there.

I have a unique relationship with the game, what with it being part of my early childhood and I played it after dmc3 (and special edition), so I had this nod of "Oh, he kept all the power-ups so guns are just that strong." Keep in mind I was a child and had the idea that he had been on quite a few jobs on the same caliber as the Temen-ni-gru event so whatever non-boss enemies would be a cake walk. I have two copies of this game for the ps2 and the cases are just different enough to make me think there was some sort of difference between them but one got water damaged and the other doesn't seem to have the same non-difficulty I remember. Even stranger, the HD dmc2 is easier than those discs (it could be how my hands fit around the controllers differently).
That aside, it's very strange how the voice active shifts halfway through the game for Aruis. He goes from calm and ready to do billionaire demon sacrifices to Saturday morning cartoon villain. Knowing what I know now, it has to do with the development of the game starting before classic dmc was released and it was mainly developed by people who had previously only worked on arcade games, being moved to this project because of the increasing success of home consoles. One mechanic that highlights these changes never brought up again was the customizable Devil Trigger amulet, which never made a return. The "Majin Devil trigger" or "Dire Devil Trigger" or "Old Sin Devil Trigger" was also neat but you had to get to low health in order to activate it so it was rare to ever get an opportunity to use it.
Lastly, the final bosses for Dante were a little odd. What was Argosax? Why wasn't it mentioned more before the final fight? Why was Falcon part of the boss blob right before that? Why was there a corrupted Odin (Bolverk) boss fight in the level with twisting hallway designs?
Interesting, as far as I know the diffrent versions of DMC2 have the same difficulty, I might be wrong though

You know, after having played Dmc2 myself (both characters) I have to say that I did not find the game as terrible as everyone claims it to be. But there are some rules that needs to be followed for the game to be actually somewhat enjoyable:
1. Stop using guns only. Yes, they can kill everything, but they make the game painfully boring. Instead, try to actually use the sword and actually use your entire moveset instead of standing still. You are literally making the game boring by yourself if you only use guns.
2. Try to learn the characters and get some style score, even though it is next to impossible to get anything higher than a C on the results screen in the styling category.
3. Play Lucia's part of the game. Honestly. She was so much more enjoyable to play around with, even though she is too a bit clunky. Her side explains the story a whole lot more too, honestly Dante does barely get anything explained at all. Also, whatever you do, GET THE F***ING BOW GUN IN MISSION 6 BEFORE ENDING IT, then you should be good otherwise. Stupid design decision to hide the only actually usable weapon for mission 7 in the mission before, so that you can risk missing it and save before you realize you missed an important item and can't go back to that mission.
4. Go into the game without any expectations for anything else other than it will be a clunky mess of a game, and enjoy whatever you can. Some missions and enemies will be a pain in the butt, but I do think the game has a few decent sides to it as well once you start moving past the flaws.
Honestly... I kinda liked it. But well yeah... The infested chopper and tanks and the puzzles... Argh that was awful

Dante's combo is cool when you combine sword with shotgun.
However,it is badly implemented and I don't know when to use those move.
its useless trying to combo on this game either way, the team behind DMC2 did a mistake making the combos direction oriented instead of button combinations/timing, and still the combos available are pretty meh in comparison to DMC1's combo, which are limited but still pretty damn fun to use and powerful.
Just spam your guns and you're fine, the only thing that will kill you if you do that is boredom, nothing else.

@@MtlPlyr oh true, but still my point about combo'ing in this game stands: enemies are too goddamn slow and gets stunned easily with Guns, you would be stupid to try to combo with your sword when Its riskier to get hit, and even If you do the combos are so slow and sluggish there's barely any satisfaction about doing them. Even the Stinger, which is the coolest attack in DMC is so stupidly boring and pathetic in dmc2.
We can thank Capcom for their Smartass decision of greenlighting a sequel to dmc1 but letting another inexperienced team do the work of the original creator, this was the mess we got and even Capcom themselves wanted to forget this game was a thing.
I remember having to buy a controller specifically with a turbo function just to beat this game. Now, the game does have auto-fire if you hold down the square button, but using it is slow as hell compared to just spamming the button.
TLDR; if a game requires you to buy a 3rd party controller to not give your hands carpal tunnel, then that game deserves to burn in hell for eternity.

Am i the only one who finish Dante and Lucia's campaign twice? I was about to start DMD/LMD/TMD in this game and i do not 100% hate it instead thinking what could've been if Itsuno had started working at DMC2 at the start of it's development.

I recently played DMC2 using the power of *cheats* to unlock higher difficulty modes and Trish (who plays like DMC1 Dante for the most part) from the start of the game. It made the game...Like, 10% better, I guess. Trish loses the cool gun tricks but gains way better melee combos, but that only emphasizes how much the game wants you to shoot things and punishes you for melee. It's harder, the enemies mostly feel better to fight but the bosses don't improve except for Phantom. Like the big fire minotaur goes from braindead simple to a Dark Souls boss, but like DS2 with janky hitboxes. Phantom was fun again but you could just play DMC1 instead lol. Basically what I'm saying is I made my DMC2 experience as good as possible and it was still meh at best.

The combat in DMC2 is boring, lifeless and lacks any sort of devil arms or depth, compared to DMC1. Granted, DMC1 only had Ifrit as a weapon with a different moveset from Force Edge/Alastor/Sparda, but it was already something.
Dante is way out of character, it’s too easy, the guns are insanely overpowered to the point you can mash the shoot button to win, the bosses are uninspired, enemies can barely hit you, and every dang weapon has the same combos! It’s a travesty and even the devs have admitted that. It’s a good thing its story is totally disconnected from the series main storyline, so you can skip it entirely without missing a thing
Dante just felt too "floaty" in DMC2. The melee attacks were way too slow compared to the first game, and you got ridiculous hangtime in the air. The game really just didn't feel good to play compared to original, and still sticks out compared to every game in the series (including the reboot).
In terms of design, the game had too many aerial enemies in proportion to Dante's moveset. While they did greatly expand on Devil Trigger options, if you didn't have meter then you were pretty much stuck to using guns which is just boring. And it's not just regular enemies; a lot - if not a majority - of bosses were like this.
Dante has NO personality.
Combat is bland, unsatisfying and unengaging. Guns are a little too powerful, combo inputs are poor, acquired weapons are worse than a terrible joke and the enemies (while varied) can't do anything to Dante.

I recently went through the HD collection and yeah, Devil May Cry 2 is indeed the worst. It took all the difficulty from the first game and made it into a button mashing to easy win sort of game. The upgrades don't even feel remarkably stronger so there's no point in upgrading your weapons. The enemies and bosses are extreamly pathetic, you can litterally spam your pistols at range and win everytime. The story is rubbish and doesn't make that much sence. Play Devil May Cry 3 instead, it's way better.
I dropped DMC 2 because of the infested chopper!
The only positive I think of is that it introduced Rebellion, the coolest sword in the Devil May Cry saga.
