You have to take into account where things came from and where we went to... back then we could tell every slight little difference the different weapons have different abilities and we could add combos up with upgraded guns and auto lock was never an issue for us
The only GOOD part of this game is how impressive it is that they managed to make the game in, what? Half a year. It had like 6 years in the oven then threw it all out because the original was WORSE than this. The old director got fired and we'll never know who they were. Then the new series director who is still the current director made this, it left a bad taste in even his mouth and he decided to try again with dmc3 and he didn't just break ground with it he shattered the Earth.
Funny thing, when I wanted to buy my first dmc a few years ago, I wanted to get DMC 1, but it wasn't in stock so the shopkeeper offered me DMC 2, without knowing anything about the game, I accepted, in the box it was DMC 3 gold edition (the one with Vergil as a playable character) I got really lucky that day
@@dontcry3953 the original release of dmc3 doesn't have vergil as a playable character, doesn't have the a few costumes, doesn't have the option to use gold orbs instead of yellow orbs, the very hard difficulty, and a few more things that dmc3 special edition or gold edition has, it's actually harder to find the original release over the special edition today cuz it's so obviously inferior to the special edition that no one bought it
same thing happened to me with ratchet and clank I wanted ratchet and clank 1 and got ratchet and clank 2 which was super hard to find back then idk why
I had DMC2 described to be by a friend once as "imagine if dante just got off a 15 hour shift and just wanted to go to the store for something he needed for dinner and he got attacked by demons on the way there" and it never made more sense to me than when I tried to play the game myself. Nothing is ever explained as to why its happening and things arent ever given suspense or time to be built up, its really just "dante kills a building then next a giant monkey attacks him then he decides to shoot down a chopper"
Did you read the enemy description in the menu? They were highly detailed in DMC1 with lore and how they attack. In DMC2 one enemy description is litteraly "It attacks enemys.".
Before DMC 5 came out there were a lot of theories about where this fit on the timeline, with it being at the end being the most popular and evetually true. My personal favorite was that it was actually a weird bad end timeline where Vergil somehow killed Dante in DMC1 and as penance took up his sword and name and tried to fill the role
Different timelines?!?, i just bought all dmc games due to Vergil memes and i just beat dmc 2 and dmc 1 before that, so i guess the next game should be dmc 3?, or maybe the timeline will jump backwards (And how does the 2013 dmc reboot, affect the story or did it even affect the story/timelime?)
It’s weird how DMC2 has just been cemented as that piece of evidence to support the accidental character arc of Dante growing super depressed after Vergil’s death, which is only remedied after he finds Nero.
@@xxCROMIZOIDxx anime doesn't support that stupid fan theory. It was directed by Kobayashi instead of Itsuno and Kobayashi wanted Dante to resemble more his DMC1 persona (cool/sarcastic/goofball) which was the natural evolution of the character after 1. That's the reason why he especified Langdon to perform a more serious behaivour instead of DMC3 one (curazehh/Rockstar/Manchild). All of this became senseless when they threw up DMC3 Dante again in DMC4 killing all the character development he had in 3 and 1. The saga has 20 years now and there's people who still belives that DMC began with 3...
Keep in mind that people saying DMC2's story is the best part of the game is them saying IN COMPARISON to the rest of the game. NOT in comparison to other games.
@@sgoc9499 steam should have an achievement about half way through to congratulate the player for playing it and one at the end asking if the player is alive still

“Heard Lucia’s campaign is slightly better” To me, she has the worst boss in the game so I say Dante has it better.....three words: Invisible Underwater Boss
Based on the couple of missions I played of Lucia and Dante's campaign, I assume she has slightly better storyline cutscenes from the bits she did offscreen that just get explained to Dante in his story. But I don't see why the stories were split in the first place. Dante's story cutscenes feel like Virgil's cutscenes from the subsequent games. But unlike DMC 3, which had Virgil as an unlockable for beating the game, and the other games which had Virgil as a DLC character, we just get Dante with half a story and the other half is in Lucia's story, most likely with the problem of not having a complete story because of how they decided to split it.
@@twinodoom It's been a long while since I've played but I think her story is somewhat better.....I think, again been a long while since I didn't really want to replay it aside from Dante's final boss (specifically the 2nd phase)
Anyone bring up the convoluted history of DMC 2 or should I? Just gonna put it anyway. You don't have to read it if you don't want to. So DMC2's development was started while the original team of DMC1 was working on the localization of DMC1 for american release. Team Little Devil's (the DMC1 developers) had no knowledge of this development until about halfway through. The original director, who to this day remains nameless, had a very inexperienced team who had never taken on a project of this size before and were promising things that they couldn't do. Four months before scheduled release, the original director quit the project and Hediaki Itsuno was hired to take his place. After looking at the what the team had accomplished, he realized that he would be a scapegoat for a failed game because the only working part of the game was the stinger move (which has become a joke due to how ridiculous it looks), so Itsuno basically had around 4 months to create a working game. Due to this the game is very bare bones and feel unfinished and boring. They had to cut many things because they were extremely pressed for time and the team was very novice in making an action game. Itsuno has also directed every DMC game since 2 so take with that what you will.
It's pretty crazy how they let some random anonymous guy be in charge of a sequel. I don't know if the they were so ashamed that they decided to not mention the original director's name or anything about them or the director was ashamed himself and just decided to stay anonymous
I really think this game deserves a full-scale remake. It fits so awkwardly into the canon of the DMC series and there’s so much potential being wasted here.
Well considering that DMC2 is somewhat of a mess in development with half of time it was being developed having a different director. But if we are to fit and stretch DMC2 into the cannon since the story is 3,1, anime series, 2,4,5. DMC2 is Dante welling over the death of his family that's why he's gloomy the whole game and he isnt as invested in doing jobs, using a false coin toss to help him move forward. Even in the anime, there's moments where Dante seems to be falling into despair. In the end of DMC2, the "Let's go all the way to hell" line if we put it into this context seemed like he's going to hell to die. Until it's explained in the "Before the Nightmare" novel that he found an open portal leading back to the human world from hell. There's only 2 ways to get to hell and back. A hell gate or Yamato. So this probably gave Dante a bit of hope that Vergil is probably still alive but doesnt count on it.
It would easily be the best one if remade. I actually dont mind this dark and cold Dante. Hopefully they won't take fan criticism too seriously when making the game what it should have been
I can somewhat agree, but honestly the only way for dmc 2 to be good is if it wasn't dmc 2. Everything would have to remade. Characters, enemies, story, locations (too open and not good for combat), gameplay, weapons. If, for example, they remade dmc 1 they would have to update the gameplay, but the locations, bosses, enemies and story (for the most part) could still be reused. What I'm trying to say is that at that point, they might as well just make dmc 6, which I would rather see.
@@antelasic1950 That's a fair point, honestly. I mean, Lucia's alright, but yeah, I guess it'd probably just be better to make a new game with her returning than trying to remake her game from the ground up.
@@GoldLight73 Well as far as I know there is a good chance for her to make a return. There is a prequel novel in which Dante gets fights the demon Balrog (and gets the dmc 5 weapon) with the help of Lucia, so they didn't forget about her. And when someone found references to the planed ladys night dlc in dmc 5, I think it also mentioned Lucia along with Lady and Trish.

I have been playing DMC for like 25 years. DMC 1 came out the same day I bought by PS2 so it was the first game I got. DMC2 is the craziest thing ever and to all the new fans I will explain what happened behind the scenes at Capcom which led to this abomination. So lets start, DMC1 came out and it was a huge success, the team that made it and Capcom are very happy so Capcom executives did the obvious thing and moved the team to another project and brought in a new team to make DMC2....a new team made up of ex Capcom arcade devs who for the most part did not like DMC1, they did not like the combat and they detested Dante's style, tone and comedy. Now you know why DMC2 Dante is so serious/stoic compared to DMC1. The new team also did not like the combat so they dumbed everything down but I also suspect they couldn't grasp all the technical work needed to make the game flow well because the original team that made DMC1 had a lot of background in fighting games and the new one didn't. More than halfway through development some Capcom executives realized this game was trash and they removed the director of DMC2 (who to this day remains unknown) and made Itsuno the new director. He did what he could but the game was screwed since it was 6 months from release and Capcom did not allow the release date to be delayed. At least from this dumpster fire we got DMC3, Capcom really made a great comeback. DMC4 was also good but at this time Capcom wanted COD and Halo sales numbers so they went with the hated reboot thinking it would sell more, it didn't. After the failed reboot they made another comeback and we got the masterpiece that is DMC5.
The reboot didn't TECHNICALLY fail, though. A lot of people actually enjoy it, even some DMC fans. I don't think it works as a DMC game, but on its own it's pretty fantastic.
@@Shiverwar I agree with you to some extent once the 60fps versioon came out but what really damaged it was the developers mainly Tameem Antoniades doing that power point showing "what dmc is not, what dmc is" that stuff really turned all the fans after him
Nice review but it seems you only focused on the Normal difficulty of the game, which doesn't really make the game justice, as higher difficulties have different enemy placements and patterns. I'm kind of a seasoned DMC2 player. I've played it in every difficulty, both Dante and Lucia stories, I've mastered the combo system and fought Argosax the Chaos on DMD difficulty and from where I'm standing, the game might be shit in Normal mode but... ... The rest of the game is even shittier.
Yeah in other dmc games you get a higher rating by chaining together different attacks and stuff, but in 2 it's pretty much stinger>guns>stinger>guns and so on
Hyve: "Let's see if I can scrape a couple positives about this game?" Me: Dante's outfit, Dante's outfit, Dante's outfit. Hyve: "Positives.. positives..." Me: Dante's outfit. Hyve: "Uh... Dante's outfit is cool?" Me: THANK YOU I swear, DMC2 has THE most wasted costume design for Dante, it really should be an unlockable costume in the other games.
That line was pretty cool. The only thing about dmc 2 that I liked other than that was the boss battle where the monster comes out of the skyscraper. But yea dmc 2 was really bad even though their was some things I liked about it.
Dont forget the way he shot argosax the second form I loved it too Also the demon with 2 white wolves isn't an easy boss which was great Did u know that u can unlock trish and play as her in both scenarios????

When I played this game during my DMC series run through. The only thing I enjoyed about this game was the fact EVERYTHING WAS A DEMON. Demon people, check. Demon animals, check. Demon vehicles, check. Demon buildings, yup check. I remember after the Demon Tanks and Helicopter I was like "Wtf is next a Demon Building!?" And wham! Hilariously stupid demon building. I still laugh about how ridiculous this game was. It would have been something I wouldn't dread to play if it wasn't for the torture that is this games, well everything. Oh and the horrible audio/character of discount Heihachi Mishima was hilarious too.
I remember beating dmc2 in a day when i was 14 (hd collection) and being confused why it was so easy. Then i started 3 and got stuck fighting agni and rudra for like a week straight, and then vergil almost made me give up playing until i got good at royal guard

Pretty funny when Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne (Yes, the game that started the "Featuring Dante from the DMC series" meme.) did a much better job with Dante's character than in...uh, the official sequel. I mean, there are some good things about DMC 2...the music is badass, the graphics (For the most part) have aged very well, and most of the character designs (Especially the depressed puppet that is Dante in this game.) are really sweet. A shame that that kind of stuff doesn't automatically make it fun to play, like literally every other DMC game in the franchise. At least 3 basically saved the franchise after this.
Is it really canon? Maybe for smt universe but not for dmc universe? Maybe neither are canon since in the Japanese version of nocturn they replaced Dante for Raidou
@@yanbelmiro7961 Actually that was a later release of Nocturne. In Japan Nocturne had three releases, the initial release of the game, The Maniax version which added Dante from the Devil May Cry series as well as other new features like the Fiend boss fights (this version was the basis for the International release), and then Maniax Chronicle Edition where Raidou Kuzunoha replaces Dante.
@@yanbelmiro7961 By the SMT Amala Multiverse the Dante encounter can be considered canon alongside the encounter with Raidou due the series history with variety of timelines, worlds, and differing events happening that leads to other branching paths.
The only good things in dmc2: Dantes outfit, “King? Ya here’s your crown”, Lucia arc, some music tracks, and also it was a good stepping stone for Dante’s arc throughout the series.
Lucia campaign knows to be even better than a vergil dlc where only the same thing is repeated by placing the vergil model on top of Dante and it doesn't have as much cutscene.
mechanically, some of the bosses in DMC 2 were really, really bad. but back then it blew my dumb teenage mind with how scary the bosses looked. like for real, they looked intimidating that my palms would sweat fighting them. looking back, DMC2 was the first game I played in the franchise and thankfully so. because playing 1 then 3 made me realize how awesome they were and how utter terrible 2 was
I really think the more quiet brooding Dante could have worked. I mean he went through plenty of trauma in DMC 1,killing his brother, watching Trish who looks like their mother “die” in their arms, so they had something to go off, we even saw something like that before fighting Mundas. But noooo that was just too hard so instead they made him out of cardboard.
Bruh all that in A cutscene woulda been like 5 seconds with Dante saying one sentence not saying dmc one didn’t kinda have A story but it lacks a lot in that area
@@NiaTheMilkTank Exactly. DMC2 was great for upping the stylish aspect of gameplay. DMC3 took what was there in DMC1 AND DMC2 to create its gameplay. 2 was bad at game design but had very awesome stylish moves.
The animation was really cool, but the game would have not been as bad if they had actually not included the wall run. It's far too easy to accidentally do when you're simply trying to roll. It does have invincibility frames, but it doesn't keep up your style meter and when you're trying to dodge near a wall with an uneven surface it makes it 100 percent impossible to dodge an attack. As cool as it looks, there's absolute zero usage to the wall run. In DMC3 you could actually start the wall run from the air so you could use it to go higher than you can with a jump, but with DMC2 you can't use it to go higher and it's never helped me with dodging and it only gets in the way of dodging. I like the wall run in DMC3 because you can't ACCIDENTALLY do it and it served some sort of purpose, but the DMC2 gameplay would have been objectively better if they had not included the wall run because it does zero positives and does massive negatives.
Oh man, going from this to 3 is like a whole ass Ratatouille moment. Going from this to 3, as soon as you get your hands on the controls even the basic combat before you even unlock *anything* just feels immediately better. At least that was how it felt for me. My friend who introduced to the series said so as well.
In 2018 I did a series of streams for this series as someone who only beat DMC1 at the time. I went from 1, which was awesome albeit frustrating at times. DMC2 was so bad, I was depressed and going. "Holy shit, that might actually be the worst game I ever played in my damn life." It made me feel small in the worst way... Usually games NEVER have that type of power over me. But this evoked an emotion I didn't think I'd feel. And then I played DMC3, it hurt me plenty as the game wasn't fucking around, but god, it was such a satisfying experience. It's like the Doom 2016 of the DMC games. Fast, Exhilarating , brutal, but most importantly, fucking awesome.
WhiteGlas That's probably part of why people praise 3 so much. Honestly, I didnt get charmed by it. It's way, way better than 2 and I can tell it's basically an even tighter DMC1 gameplay wise but there's something missing. That weird blend of horror, action and wackiness that 1 had is missing in 3. Its goofy and rewarding, but the dark ambiance is completely gone. I love the surrealism of DMC1 but sadly, the rest of the games didn't manage to capture that feeling ever again
For the three-head guy, you gotta hold the lock-on button when the cursor is on the head you're supposed to be attacking. As for Lucia's campaign, there are noticeable yet slight improvements to her gameplay over Dante's. Due to her projectile weapons not being as OP as Dante's some bosses actually require a little effort. You also get to see the story unfold from her perspective, which provides additional context for what's happening. She also gets some new bosses and enemies to fight that Dante never sees. Her campaign also has a better ending and closure.
I own this game for PS2 and never finished it, so when I got the collection in a bundle, I knew I had to fulfill my destiny. Lucia IS nicer to play (aside from her side-dodge not being optimal transporation like Dante's), has a tremendously goofy grenade weapon that's almost worthless but has some meme value, and has a better actor than the text-to-speech program they got for Dante, but she also has to suffer a thankfully easy water level. A little disappointing we never got this character in a good game.
DMC 2 was actually my first DMC game I’ve ever played and I enjoyed it for what it was at the time. It was only after I went back and played DMC 1 and DMC 3 that I realized how horrible naive I was. I can’t play 2 anymore because of how slow and clunky it feels to me now even when I bought the HD re releases. DMC 4 is still my favorite one out of all the franchise.
I say that about 1. I think one is garbage outside of boss fights. 2 made me feel like the real dante, just broken. Dmc 3 had the best story but ill admit the combat was just as boring as the first until you started getting to the end or unlocked vergil. 4 was basic and 5 sucked ass
@@xsorakazamax7522 wtf are you saying? DMC 2 is garbage, slow, no emotion, no devil weapons, you can easily kill everyone in the game with ebony and ivory.
@@Belmont63 there was alot of emotion not the weapons not being all there own styles did suck but this is dante so killing everything like that is canon LOL one thing I couldnt STAND about dmc 3 even tho it's the best was at higher missions everything started taking like 50 slashes to kill and it was just draining. most of the time I'm out of there and dont feel like dante.
I've been a giant DMC stan since the first game came out, to the point that I own and wear an actual red leather trench coat, and i want to weigh in on a couple things: you described the combo system wrong - it doesnt go by what direction you move the stick, it goes by what slash you move the stick after. that doesnt make it less shit. regarding unfinishedness/lack of polish, you're absolutely right, that's exactly what happened. the story goes that they started development on 2 before 1 was finished, put a whole team of new guys on it, and their director was an idiot. So 6 months before release, they bring in Itsuno to take over, and at that point virtually nothing was done. They had some art assets, some maps, and only one or two attacks finished, and itsuno managed to get them to crank out almost the whole game in 4-5 months. The fact that it's playable at all is impressive. Lucia's campaign was at one point supposed to be the main campaign, but then they realized Lucia sucks as a character and her story is dumb (her campaign does at least HAVE a story, kinda) and they had to sell the game on Dante. And a last thing - in light of the time crunch, you can see some nuggets of ideas in dmc2 that, had they been given more time, might have made it a good game. In fact a lot of them like rainstorm, twosometime, air combos, and instant weapon switching did go on to be great additions to the series, they just couldn't get them right the first time out. So while DMC2 ended up bad, it's still an important step for the series to have taken on the road to what it's become.
If he thought the switches on Dante campaign were bad I'm so happy he didn't play Lucia, her underwater level with the switches that dissappear if you don't hit them fast enough and you've have to float up and down in the water to reach them. I still have PTSD from it
I remember playing this and not even knowing who I was actually fighting until halfway through, when they decide to finally introduce the main baddie. What a bad, bad game.
15:06 It's a testament to how much the combat in this game got kneecapped that I was surprised when you actually managed to pull off something resembling a real combo here.
You're not missing anything with Lucia. It's where the actual story is, but it's still nothing to write home about. She still fights the same enemies with even slower guns and she has underwater levels.
I have a weird memory from DMC2- The first time I ever played this game I remember getting a holy water drop from one of the dog/gremlin characters early in the 1st level. Then when I went to use it in a later fight, it wasn't in my inventory... then I found that apparently there are no holy water items in DMC2...? But I vividly remember the art for it?
This is so weird! I literally just played through it yesterday and I remember getting a holy water early on! I should check my inventory, I never ended up needing it, so I dunno what items I even have
4 months later: DMC 2 has Holy Water, but when you get the item, Is instantly used to damage enemies, once you get It during the fight, you deal damage to enemies, There's no option to use It at Will
Remember buying this on day one - one of my all time biggest mistakes of my life. I'm sure I read something saying the people who made DMC2 were sent to jail for crimes against humanity
I can't wait to see your DMC 3 review. Hearing your gripes about DMC 1 & 2 makes me really anticipate the future video. It does just about everything you said you'd want from this series. DMC 3 may not be the most advanced compared to 4 & 5 but it definitely hits the sweet spot for what this series should be. DMC 3 is what got me into the series! Can't wait!
Dante's story is really simple, but Lucia's story is about how she was a fake being made to do the bidding of the super devil and coming to terms with her dark past, and demonstrating that she can overcome the machinations others force on her. On that merit, I would argue that the story is the least bad part of the game
I guarantee that not playing the second campaign doesn't make this review any less true. I have owned no less than 6 copies of devil may cry 2, across 4 different platforms, and I couldn't get myself to slog through the first mission. When I was a child, playing on a ps2, back when I thought Chicken Little was a _good movie,_ I still refused to play this dumpster fire of a game. I offer my congratulations and condolences of managing to get through one of the campaigns.
I understand that you don't want to play Lucia's campaign. But she's the one who gets a character development, the traditionnal thematic of "The dark and light within us all". Lucia is actually a good character, she's sweet and caring. Gameplay wise, she sucks as much as Dante.
I think that if DMC2 wasn't such an incomplete game, had a more fleshed out gameplay system and level design, it might've been better. But I'm still glad it sucked; otherwise we wouldn't have the grace that was its sequels. X)
WHY DO I REMEMBER HAVING SUCH A GOOD TIME WITH THIS GAME!? Man my 12 year old self was a sad sack of shit... (I should clarify that I borrowed this game when I was 10 shortly after it's release, then I got it when I was eleven, and replayed both CDs several times till I turned 12. Also I strongly disliked DMC3 when I tried that at the age of 15 cause I compared it to the first AND only one I'd played until then, 2 lol. Obviousl 1 3 4 and 5 are the superior games by far. But I just couldn't see that)
We don't have any taste and standards when we are kids, so don't be too hard on yourself. I will say that it's an actual good reason to disregard any opinion on a game when people say "i love it as a kid".
Kinda sad you never played Lucia, she genuinely feels so much better to play, almost like the game was developed around her. DMC2 is a weird enigma. It's one of the only games where the enemy attacks/behavior actually change when you get higher difficulties. But the Must Die mode has such awful mechanics that you can't experience the better AI, and new moves at all without getting so frustrated that most would just quit on the first mission.
Am I the only person confused by "Auto Lock-on?" I've never had an auto lock happen until the reboot, the lock on in all of the other games were hold R1 to lock which would then make the directional inputs easier to consistently pull off. Then to switch targets click the left stick. If there's an option to turn lock on into a toggle I would reccomend turning it off because all of the games feel designed around hold to lock if you're comfortable with giving it a shot.
Lore wise, the whole thing felt like a rushed mess. In terms of monster designs though, it was the first step that they went into creating more monstrous looking demons.
The funny thing is, they did port DMC1 Dante into 2, it's Trish, once you beat the game on hard mode you unlock Trish as a playable character and she just has Dante's moveset from 1, delay combos and all.
I made a serious attempt to beat this game when I bought the HD collection. I managed to endure past the helicopter, but then I got to the big fire minotaur boss and discovered that if you gets far enough away his AI just TURNS OFF. He'll sit there doing absolutely nothing while you shoot him to death. I quit the game in disbelief and haven't played it since. I don't think I've ever seen a more broken boss fight. When you pick up DMC3 the increase in quality is both immediately noticeable and MASSIVE. It feels even better if you're coming straight from 2. like eating a giant cheeseburger after starving all day
Yeah. When you go from dmc2 to dmc3 you can see BIG differences in both quality and difficulty. I mean, I'm one of the guy being OFFERED EASY difficulty on DMC3 if you know what I mean... DMC2 on other side, not really despite those ultra annoying boss.
The only things DMC2 got going for it is Dante's design, smoother graphics, and the ability to run on walls due to the Matrix craze. But that's it. Now, you'll hear fans try HARD to justify this game. Either they claim it's an underappreciated gem like Alien 3 or claim Dante was 'depressed'. I call bullshit on both. Not only was this game solely made to cash-in on DMC1's success (going so far as to do it behind Hideki Kamiya's back), but Dante's 'way of dealing with depression has always been to bottle it up and hide it with a smile. He does this in prequel material and DMC1-DMC5. Dante is this way because his own creator (Hideki Kamiya) is this way lol. A lot of Kamiya's characters take up a few of his personality quirks. To put the nail to the 'But Dante was depressed!' coffin, in all DMC2 development interviews (from game magazines like PSM to promo material released prior to the sequel's release), the sole intent behind Dante's new demeanor was to have him be more "mature". DMC2 took place in the far future where Dante had finally grown up and mellowed out. And like James Bond, he would be partnered with a new babe to join him on a new adventure. And since DMC2 was made during the Matrix craze, the development team felt a mellowed Dante (like Neo) would be "stylish". So, that's it. Dante wasn't acting 'depressed' over Nero Angelo/Vergil. Dante was simply being 'mature' (the exact word the DMC2 development team used). Of course, this future timeline of DMC2 consequently backed the franchise into a corner. And since no one liked this 'mature' Dante, we ended up with a PREQUEL instead. Then when that prequel proved to be a success, that DMC team (headed by Itsuno now) opted to just to gloss over DMC2's character progression altogether. Now, it's considered an estranged step-son of DMC family, along with the Reboot. Since then, several fans have attempted to explain the Dante in DMC2, trying to play up this 'depression' card. But for longtime fans who've followed all the shady events leading up to DMC2 as well as understand how Dante always dealt with his depression, we know the REAL truth: it's bullshit. Even the team behind Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne chose to return Dante to his former glory days since they weren't buying it either. In the end, Capcom's greed for more money, bad writing, and a lack of understanding of Dante's character nearly killed this franchise. To have many fans attempt to rewrite DMC2's controversial history and make excuses on behalf of Capcom means we're doomed to have this same mistake repeated, which is how Itsuno got screwed over by the reboot in the same way Kamiya got screwed over by DMC2. While we all have the freedom to enjoy whatever we want (and trust me, I like a good amount of cheese content myself lol), fans shouldn't feel obligated to love a turd or make excuses for it either.
I'm not sure what you are saying. I literally haven't seen or heard a SINGLE soul actually defend this game it call it a gem. This is like godzilla '98 where it's universally reviled.
I've not seen anyone defend DMC2 for anything it does besides being funny to watch or play for 5 minutes because of how absurdly awful the gameplay and story is.
People playing the 'Dante was depressed' card are just trying to make the story more cohesive. While the game fucking sucks and no one would argue otherwise, some people like having a cohesive story across a series. Yes, I am one of them. While that wasn't the intent of the game, hey, when life gives you lemons...
I've been waiting for this for so long! 100% worth the wait, just like DMC3 will be after this travesty. Oh and the Lucia campaign is only better because it's shorter and they try to give Lucia an actual character arc. Unlike Dante who walks in, does a thing and then walks somewhere else to do a thing there too. Only time this game becomes not shit is when you beat the game on hard mode and unlock Trish as a playable character since Trish just plays like DMC1 Dante, fists and sword included. But you still have to beat the game twice to unlock a better moveset for the main character.
@Reggielacey 223 Yes it is, it's hardly even a game. The boss you fight on the rooftop after meeting Heihachi (he's called Arius here but that's a retarded name) can be defeated by just walking backwards and shooting.
No you cannot, Graeme, and that's what literally everyone who complains about casuals using items to beat the Devil May Cry series forgets. The guns are a fucking crutch that dumps on your rating. If you're a casual, sure, just shoot everything, but you're not really trying if you don't aim for S on every mission. In which case you need to get your big boy pants on, stop whining about shooting everything, and learn how to combo into dodge into combo into jump into shoot into combo. DMC2 can be entertaining, when you ignore the meme about "JuSt ShOoT eVeRyThInG! eZ!" Especially since the reviewer here failed to mention the final boss, after the giant amalgam. Who blocks bullets the whole time, forcing you to sword fight him. Whoops.
@@Nekufan1000000 Yeah sorry that's bullshit, not only is sword combat boring and slow in this game due to them putting all of the combat dev time into guns but you actually can beat the final boss with guns. The only good thing about DMC2 is laughing at how bad the game is when you can rape every boss with what's supposed to be the weakest form of weapon. Without that, the game has zero entertainment value.
I actually had to remind myself that the sword was in the game and to use it, because it really doesn't feel like the game expects you to know that. But Dante can flip off of walls, so that's pretty cool.
Honestly when I first played this game 4 years ago as a casual peruser of this franchise I thought to myself "how the fuck did the franchise survive past this!?" As far as everyone is concerned SMT Nocturne is the real Devil May Cry 2. And while I can certainly understand people's grievances with DMC and D.I.N.O I'm betting everyone was complaining about that game because they somehow managed to repress their memories of playing this...thing.
The funny thing about DMC2 being so bad is that it had a bigger impact on the franchise than any other single game. It laid the groundwork for many of DMC3's most beloved features. Granted, that's a lot like having written half of a great report.
But wouldn’t you say that DMC 3 had the biggest impact on the franchise? It set the tone for the rest of the series and moves its identity towards the combat, introduced styles and fleshed out DMC 2’s weapon switching.
You know what? I'll subscribe to you so that one day when you are a professional channel, I can proudly say " I was there when this channel was not yet professional".
I just learned this in my third playthrough (counting the one in Lucia campaign) The combo system isn't direction based, it's based on which attack you move the stick If you move it on the first attack, Dante does a three attack combo On the second attack, it goes up to 6 On the third attack, you do slash upwards after the downward slash
The R2 thing was the first thing i figured out. beyond that, the combat = you can complete the game with just ranged attacks... After shooting awhile, enemies start floating/flying away so there's no need to melee them, even the big guys. Get hit 5 times, start floating and flying up into oblivion, you can juggle a few as well as when they fall, the bounce and stay down for a few seconds, shooting again launches them up... lol
There are at least 4 things that I like in DMC2: 1. It's really short 2. It's really easy 3. Dante looks great 4. The Despair Embodied looks very cool, and is a pretty decent fight as well. That's about it. Also, mission 14 should be qualified as a crime against humanity
This was my introduction to DMC. I was about 12 or something and I loved it. But only because of the concept. Invincible half demon. It’s been about 20 years and I can bring myself to sit through a full campaign again.
Honest reviews are the best reviews. Even if it’s professionally or unprofessionally done. If someone is being professional about a game review I honestly see it sugar coating and quite honestly I prefer your way of reviewing games lol
If people say DMC Devil May Cry is the worst in the series, it's because they didn't play this one. Hell, even Dante's personality sucks in this one, I'd take DMC DMC Dante over DMC 2 Dante without thinking twice.
I actually disagree with the common criticism of Dante's portrayal as a character in this game because I can kind of relate to this Dante. His mood reflected mine when playing through DMC2. Bored, depressed and dead inside. Edit: Grammar fixes

Couldn't agree more. I just started playing DMC 2 for first time in my life an hour ago and now I'm contemplating if I should jump off a bridge. I thought people were over re-acting but wow was I wrong... This game is actual dog shit. It does nothing special or correct and it's worse than the DmC reboot. I'm not even exaggerating.
1:16 "that's an opinion...um, that you can have i guess, if you like to be wrong about things" This quote of yours really made me laugh when I first watched this years ago when this video was new, and I've said this over the years since, it's so funny to me! Edit: although I've changed it a bit to be "that's an opinion that you can have, if you like to be wrong about things"
My favorite missions in this game were mission 11 from Dante's campaign and the water level from Lucia's campaign. They had the most platforming and puzzles compared to the other ones. I really liked taking a break from the boring combat.
I actually really liked this game despite its flaws. Lucia is my favorite character of the series. Very well designed. Too bad she was only in one game.
I really thought her version of the “created by the bad guy” story was a lot better done than Trish’s in 1. She actually felt bad about it because she was raised to be a good person and eventually strived to do better so that it wouldn’t define her. Trish was always meant to be evil from the moment Mundas made her but only really changed because Dante wanted to correct the wrong of not being able to save his “mother”.
like i understand liking her but favourite character? you'd have to be mad. even trish is more interesting. hell fucking morrison and patty are more interesting
Yeah, because the next game if you play DMC3 NA Original Release, you will FEEL PAIN. It's good but my good if the DMC3 Original NA was a cruel Capcom joke because he complain DMC2 being too easy.
You know what? I'm glad you said that. Because it just made me realize what exactly this game is. It's the ANTI DARK SOULS. Like the exact polar opposite. Think about it. Bullshit story, laughable objectives, retarded enemies, cancerous controls, unspeakable level design, no memorable music, Unthreatening bosses, and absolutely no melee weapon variety. It's like the Devil ate Dark Souls and shat it out. That's why he was crying.
As someone who's an avid DMC fan, I can say that the series' likability goes something like this: DMC 1: Progenitor, so it gets a pass, but pretty clunky and very dated. DMC 2: This used to be the game we didn't talk about. Now, we just remember how bad it was, consider it fanfiction, and move on. DMC 3: THIS is where the series takes off, and is considered to this day to be the best of the franchise...for the time being. DMC 4: Didn't exactly reinvent the wheel, but was a solid entry, and we got to see Lady in that outfit...hoo-boy, solid 8/10 on that alone (IYKYK). DMC 5: Took everything we loved about DMC 3 and ramped it up to 11. Beautiful game, beautiful graphics, beautiful combat, beautiful everything. Considered by and large to be the new king of the hill, but DMC 3 isn't a slouch, and still rightly has fans considering it king to this day. DmC: We don't speak of it, it doesn't exist.
Most of the time when you hear a sequel is bad it is horribly over exaggerated but this is a rare case where it really is just as terrible as people say
"I've heard that Lucia's campaign is not as bad" Who on Earth told you that? She not only has an underwater level, but an underwater boss that's mostly invisible half the time (on DMD it's always like that) which means that it's not possible to lock-on to. The problem is that you move sooooo god damn slow that attacking it with swords isn't really an option and since your lock-on doesn't work half the time you are just shooting blindly. I'm not kidding when I say that the helicopter and the floating heads are great compared to that one (especially on dmd). The only good think I suppose is that it's only 13 missions long (I think, it's been a while).
So, Dante does have a personality in this game. He just killed his brother, the last link to a happy life. The events of the anime play out, and you see dante lighten up a bit. Then Dmc4 happens, which, at the beginning, Dante is ruthless, efficent, and non verbal. Until Nero shows up, and outstages him. (Though Dante was merely playing with Nero) Finally, Dante has a reason to be his wacky, slightly unhinged (in a good way) self. I know when the game came out, he was just your standard edgy guy, but the devs really worked to keep dante on a character arc, spanning his entire life. In 5, he relishes the idea to fight his brother. He's all business, in the beginning, but that fight at the end, was filled with nothing but Happiness. Dante longs for a great fight, but he longs for a better brother.
I've been playing these games the same way you have and I just finished the helicopter fight, and I love your videos, they're well put together and really enjoyable. Keep up the great work
I used to fantasize about this game when I saw it in some gaming magazine I bought when I was a child lol.... then I played DMC3 in some rental PS2 somewhere and I was obsessed with the franchise, I think this is the game that got me into gaming in general.
This guy doesn't understand, this was meant to be the last game in the series. Dante has seen some shit. And now has became fearless. He doesn't care and he is quiet.

Different timelines?!?, i just bought all dmc games due to Vergil memes and i just beat dmc 2 and dmc 1 before that, so i guess the next game should be dmc 3?, or maybe the timeline will jump backwards

It’s weird how DMC2 has just been cemented as that piece of evidence to support the accidental character arc of Dante growing super depressed after Vergil’s death, which is only remedied after he finds Nero.
I mean, the dmc anime supports that too. And from the dmc5 recap movie, the anime story is more valid than 2.
CthulhuWentBritish So this means that DMC2 is practically worthless in terms of adding to Dante.

I hated Dante’s campaign so much and was on the fence about doing hers but this decided it for me
Underwater for dmc 1 and 2 suck ass i hated those missions lmao
I keep forgetting the underwater boss its so bad my brain want to delete it
Based on the couple of missions I played of Lucia and Dante's campaign, I assume she has slightly better storyline cutscenes from the bits she did offscreen that just get explained to Dante in his story.

Hideki kamiyah creator of the
Original 2001 devil may cry .
It's pretty crazy how they let some random anonymous guy be in charge of a sequel. I don't know if the they were so ashamed that they decided to not mention the original director's name or anything about them or the director was ashamed himself and just decided to stay anonymous
I wish they gave another chance to this game, like a remake like they are doing with RE or just put in the trash and make the REAL DMC2
Hideaki Itsuno also publicly stated that his reason for making DMC 3 was that he didn't want to be known as the guy who made DMC 2
daniel spell I know Kamiya was the director for 1 but they took the entire team off the project and I felt that was important to state
I really think this game deserves a full-scale remake.

@Shalucard Was it confirmed to be canon

Finally someone mentions Lucia tho
There also was the double sided coin.
@@shadestrider1033 dont forget the acrobatics too the way dante shoots his guns up in the air
And Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne

Another positive might be the matrix running on walls moves. That was so cool back in the 2000s
Positives: DMC 2 gave birth to Trickster and Gunslinger Style.
ZeroNull i did not know that one! It makes sense since guns were super useful in the second game
@@NiaTheMilkTank and sword master with arial attacks.
I feel i love 3 so much because it immediately cleansed the bad taste 2 left in my mouth
Nah like 10000x better
WhiteGlas I agree. I quit 2 due to boredom and frustration. 3 felt right.
A little disappointing we never got this character in a good game.
lettuce prey she's back in 6 since she appears in 5
DMC 2 was actually my first DMC game I’ve ever played and I enjoyed it for what it was at the time.

She’s The only Ok thing about the game
Too bad she's an absolutely garbage character and is emotionally weaker then a, what, 10 year old girl?
If anything, this review is being generous to DMC2.
I should check my inventory, I never ended up needing it, so I dunno what items I even have
4 months later:
DMC 2 has Holy Water, but when you get the item, Is instantly used to damage enemies, once you get It during the fight, you deal damage to enemies, There's no option to use It at Will
Every copy of Dmc is personalised
Remember buying this on day one - one of my all time biggest mistakes of my life.
I'm sure I read something saying the people who made DMC2 were sent to jail for crimes against humanity
Am I the only one who loved playing as Lucia? She was so sweet and caring, and her controls and combat are so quick and fluid 🥺
I’m with ya on that.
Yes
just finished dmc 2 with dante and i don't think i wanna touch it even with a 10ft pole for a while, not even to play lucia's campaign
This video is like hearing you describe the light leaving your eyes from this game. Hopefully DMC3 brings it back for you, lol
Also a tip for future games: you'll get more out of jumping for i-frames than dodge rolling.
Can't wait!
3's combat system arguably rivals its successors without its hardware-rooted handicaps (PS2 not having enough RAM to support style switching).

Best positive about the game is playable Trish, wish feels good to play when mastered
But I just couldn't see that)
No no don't bash it man, I liked it too
To be fair, when we're kids, we have fun with anything really, it's only when we start to mature that we start to acquire our own tastes
Dude this was my first ever DMC game that I played and at 10 years old I thought it was an absolute BANGER
We don't have any taste and standards when we are kids, so don't be too hard on yourself. I will say that it's an actual good reason to disregard any opinion on a game when people say "i love it as a kid".
I could totally see someone likening this at that age and having not played the original as a comparison
The Golems (very slowly) attack by causing spikes to come out of them, but you can normally just stagger them constantly that it's a non threat tbh
From what I remember auto lock on and auto fire were options after you died a few times but you can turn them off.
My favorite part about DMC2 is that you can finish it in about 2-3 hours, so the sufferring doesnt last too long
Lore wise, the whole thing felt like a rushed mess.

@@joetheghost9663 that was the first game. Unless 2 was ALSO supposed to be one
@@kidfox3971 But can you get S by just walking back and shooting?

I just learned this in my third playthrough (counting the one in Lucia campaign)
The combo system isn't direction based, it's based on which attack you move the stick
If you move it on the first attack, Dante does a three attack combo
On the second attack, it goes up to 6
On the third attack, you do slash upwards after the downward slash
The biggest positive of this game is that it introduced switching weapons instantly by pressing a shoulder button.
And Rebellion.
The R2 thing was the first thing i figured out.
beyond that, the combat = you can complete the game with just ranged attacks... After shooting awhile, enemies start floating/flying away so there's no need to melee them, even the big guys. Get hit 5 times, start floating and flying up into oblivion, you can juggle a few as well as when they fall, the bounce and stay down for a few seconds, shooting again launches them up... lol
There are at least 4 things that I like in DMC2:
1. It's really short
2. It's really easy
3. Dante looks great
4. The Despair Embodied looks very cool, and is a pretty decent fight as well.
That's about it.
Also, mission 14 should be qualified as a crime against humanity
Dante’s design is the only good thing I’ve heard about this game😂
This was my introduction to DMC. I was about 12 or something and I loved it. But only because of the concept. Invincible half demon. It’s been about 20 years and I can bring myself to sit through a full campaign again.

@@hewhobattles8869 You are absolutely correct. Have a like sir.

@Yujiro Hanma Yeah fuck Dark Souls but Demons Souls tho...
the here's your crown scene is easily the best part of the entire game. That scene was easily one of dante's most badass moments.
0:11 I keep coming back to this video for this part.
As someone who's an avid DMC fan, I can say that the series' likability goes something like this:
DMC 1: Progenitor, so it gets a pass, but pretty clunky and very dated.
I'm surprised you didn't talk about the sound design. Dmc 2 I remember just being really quiet for most of the part lol
asides the enemies screeching as i lazily unload my artillery of bullets at their faces, yeah it's real quiet
Devil may cry 2 is actually that bad
Me: water makes things wet
Most of the time when you hear a sequel is bad it is horribly over exaggerated but this is a rare case where it really is just as terrible as people say
Tfw the story of dmc2's development is far more interesting than the actual in game story
I remember buying this game then returning it 2 hours later. I was so upset because I loved the first one.
"I've heard that Lucia's campaign is not as bad"
Who on Earth told you that?
Me *Hears the background ost* .
A man of culture, i see !
This video just confirms what I figured out while playing infected chopper... I dont need to play it anymore and I'm moving on to Dmc 3!
This guy doesn't understand, this was meant to be the last game in the series. Dante has seen some shit. And now has became fearless. He doesn't care and he is quiet.
