    Good on you Kim for doing it yourself rather than filming someone installing it for you.
    My impression is that because it plugs into the display computer it is only a Tesla software update away from being broken. You are then relying on the vendor to update their firmware to get it working again. For that reason, I wish Tesla would allow certified aftermarket accessories. Or even produce them. This display would be better if it showed navigation instructions or replicated the “side camera when indicating” display. That would require Tesla software input though. I don’t believe these should be available as an assembly line option, because that just complicates production and adds cost.
    But autonomous drive is still at least 5 years away so Tesla could provide itself another revenue stream by doing service centre installation of certified products like instrument clusters, HUDs and power frunks. (I don’t do Twitter so can’t suggest it to Mr Musk.)
    I am in a RHDrive country so this instrument cluster isn’t available. I have a HUD that sits on the dash instead and provides basic info like speed, drive mode, battery%, etc. I had got used to looking at the centre display for speed but quickly reverted after installing the HUD. It only cost a tenth as much as the cluster and doesn’t block the airflow.

    I like being able to control the driver side air vent, also, it doesn’t allow you to get rid of the car visualization on the main display, so you’re not regaining any screen real estate that Model S/X has.
    I feel like this was a missed opportunity to be more innovative, this could’ve been a HUD implementation, while maintaining an unobstructed air vent.

    You're pretty handy -and brave, Kim! Now I want to see you install a TorkLift tow hitch! 😉 I want to see more of your reactions when driving and using that binnacle. I don't think I would do the modification, for several reasons. I've adjusted just fine to my Model 3's screen by now; I would want a "wood" piece to match the original; I would prefer a heads up display if I really wanted to have readouts in front of me; and… I would want the binnacle to imitate the "blind spot" round camera displays now in the Kia EV6 and Hyundai IONIQ 5. They are much better than Tesla's solution, IMHO. But at least the battery has a green color in your new binnacle -like we've wanted Tesla to restore on its display for ages!

    Great video! Drove my first Tesla (Model Y Long Range) and the lack of an instrument cluster hit me fast. Especially coming from normal ICE layouts (Mercedes AMG suv coupe). However..... as time progresses I got used to the one large iPad screen setup and the only thing that might actually be useful (and more so than in an ICE) is a heads up display! Otherwise, I was very impressed with the Tesla Model Y and this is coming from my daily driver Mercedes AMG. Less is more (relaxing) in the Tesla. Will get one in the future (knock on wood).

    This has been around a while from other companies, I had it and loved the look but at the time tesla had just done a firmware update andthe aftermarket dash was very buggy as a result. Telsa firmware updates can effect the dash and you may be stuck waiting on the aftermarket dash to get an update its a huge downside.

    I would love to see someone come up with an easier solution where you could plug into the Tesla instrument cluster with a Bluetooth or wifi transmitter that could talk to a smart phone. That way one could use one of their old smart phones with a mag charging base to do something similar. All I want to see is the speed and tire pressure. Looks nice but with the wood trim on the doors I’m not sure how good it will look.

So simple/straight forward to install, yet so very functional and (I don’t believe) Kim even broke a nail! Excellent post, thank you. First question in my mind: For those of us with M3s old enough to not have the dash cam memory stick connection in the glove box (a neat security feature), might there be a way to have that USB connector intended for updating the display unit firmware (if ever needed) also DOUBLE as a dash cam memory stick connection so we won’t have to keep it in the center console? Thanks again!

    Got a question, I noticed the car display on the new instrument cluster has the car in blue. I am assuming there is no option for color matching the color to your actual car color like you can do on the Tesla monitor.

    • @ItsKimJava
      @ItsKimJava  ปีที่แล้ว +10

      So turns out because our M3 is only one of a few thousand 3’s with the original silver color, the center screen didn’t automatically transmit the correct color to the smart cluster. Otherwise the color auto matches any other color 3 or Y. I understand there’s a firmware update coming to solve it for silver 3’s though.

    $800?! I know that’s on par with others but the graphics etc are a bit outdated. Also, in Tennessee and I’m sure in Georgia you need that AC to hit your face. How much did it block the vents?

      I came to ask about the air flow too and I'm also in Tennessee! 😂

      To be fair, if you pre cooled your car before getting into it then you wouldn't need the air blowing directly into your face. But I'm not really a fan of how Tesla did the vents on the Model 3/Y because it limits the air control. You can't close the passenger vents for more air to the driver when no one else but you is in the car, like with other vehicles.
