This week in our Tesla DIY Series, we take apart the dash of our Model 3, removing our previous Tesla Smart Dash for an upgrade to an Apple Car Play enabled Smart Instrument cluster from Tsportline. The software UI just looks a bit cheap compared to Tesla OEM so I feel like it would cheapen out the feel in the car for me

I love how there's an option for basically everyone for the instrument cluster. I started with the MSX like you and I have the infotainment madness on order!!
I stopped by there last week when I seen the lifted Model Y with the brush guard. I talked to Eric and let him drive my Lightning and will be headed back there to get some work done to it. Great group of people at the store.
I showed my wife the screen and now she wants one.

Do you know if adding this does anything to the warranty?
It's not bad. While I want Tesla to have many of these features this is a decent work around. It needs it's own LTE connection. THis way you do it all from the unit. But this is still a cool unit.

The biggest issue with these for me is they block the center air vents
They had three options , there’s a smaller one that doesn’t interact with vents.
Always a compromise. Give and take

Nice vid, the lack if an instrument cluster was the reason why I didn't get a model 3. Couldn't wrap my head around a 50k vehicle and no instrument where I'd expect to see them
I totally agree! The lack of an instrument panel if front of the driver makes no sense and is actually a safety hazard. With this hack, Model 3 or Y are back on the table!

I watched another video similar to this but they stated that depending on the chip in the car, is how you install it.

Got myself the little mini one... perfect, the one with carplay is just not practical touching it with the wheel in the way... just a question of time that we will be able to get more apps like Waze or others

Tesla are great cars and got me addicted to EVs. I have owned 2 LR and 1 Performance Model 3 all 22 cars. Now I'm waiting for my more fun, better build quality and definitely better service Porsche Taycan, with all the screens I need lol

I have car play in my 2020 Subaru Forester. Love it. Works so well. No issues. I was going to buy a Tesla, but decided not to because it doesn't support car play. This changes everything.
I hope they are planning on having additional screens for the Cybertruck!
One thing missing on that is a simple HUD at the back of that small screen. Navi arrows + speed HUD would be 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Does this have blind spot monitoring like Teslogic? Where it flashes red if you put on turn signal with someone next to you

I noticed the PSI was not displaying. Were you able to get that to work?
Can you make a screen that provides the traffic visualization? That is the most important feature.
Looks great but in EU, when I asked Tesla about even wrapping the car (with a colour vinyl wrap), they told me if the cameras and sensors are disconnected outside of their official service, the onboard computer will record that 'event' and it may void parts of your warranty if anything happens - like errors related to autopilot, etc. So what you're doing, at least in EU, will certainly void the warranty. Perhaps it's different in the U.S. but I would triple check.
I would maybe consider the minimalistic option.

I actually like the look of the MSX-Pro Driver LCD better. It looks like something that would be more factory and not another tablet that sticks up.

Finally aftermarket parts to make a Tesla look less ugly
Looking at the display that they showed, it had the car's speed listed as mp/h instead of mph. I'm guessing that whomever designed it must have based it on how the abbreviation for kilometres per hour is km/h and somehow thought that the miles per hour was mp/h instead of mph.

Thanks for the video. I've been wanting one of these for my Model Y and this looks good. I'm confused though - how does the voice command button change? I see that you have to press a button to talk to siri - when you press the tesla voice button, does it still open up navigation and other commands? Do you have to do a lot of stuff on your phone first? That would seem to be a pain. I use Sirius and bluetooth a lot. I wonder if I could use a voice command on the new device to change stations? Thanks for any info. Really enjoy your videos
Haven’t tried to tune different stations with voice commands but I know you can also use the scroll wheels to access features on the screen if you prefer. I typically keep everything on car play and just facilitate through my phone rather than the touch screen.

No, it matches to your car color automatically. Only the silver color is not a match as that color was long discontinued.

Can’t tell a difference in the winter, but it may have some impact on direct flow in the warmer months. I know that Brian at Tsportline mentioned they offer a smaller footprint version with no impact to airflow which we briefly showed in the start of the video.

So 1 question is , does this void the warranty?
Did you change your dashboard from white to the wood finish? If so, where did you buy the wood dash from?
@@Rose-re9tn no, was originally wood. The white was part of another mod linked in the description.
@@MasterZhao No it does not. There's a law that protects aftermarket mods from voiding warranty. It would only void warranty if Tesla could prove that the issue you are trying to fix was directly related to your dash upgrade. Which is fully reversible and not permanent tbh.
It will deffinelty void warranty, I would recommend contacting Tesla before doing any changes

No, has never been an issue.
I prefer teslas infotainment setup over CarPlay! However I can’t say the same for Rivian. Rivian’s OS is in bad shape right now and could seriously use CarPlay. I would definitely get this kind of mod for Rivian.
I'd shrink wrap those wiress directly under the new display. In the dash like that they will otherwise end up rattling like crazy!!!

There’s user report on Tesla forums saying these kind of mod cause their car to shut down after Tesla OTA. And also good luck explaining it to Tesla for your warranty work.
I’ll just get a Mage Safe phone mount for the dash and call it a day.
what about that monthly internet data connection subscription? Can you now use your mobile phone for that connection instead of using the Tesla subscription?
Do you mean premier connectivity? Just use your phone as a Hotspot.

I mean, had you not had a professional installation guy with you im pretty sure this would have taken a LOT longer lol. This isnt a minor install.
They definitely helped, but this was a pretty straight forward and plug and play install.
They have a detailed install video on their website but if I can do it, anyone can. 😆
Does It have Steering wheel controls on the screen?? If you can move in the menu using the Steering wheel controls, select apps...going app etc
