I'm 45 and I have battled acne my whole life. I've been using benzoyl peroxide since I was a teenager. In a wash form when I was younger and as a topical for 20yrs. I use clean & clean BenzoylPeroxide at 10%...$4.99. It works! I use it religiously everyday to treat my t-zone. I don't ever remember having any drying or skin peeling...but I've been using it a LONG time.

I’ve battled acne for most of my adult life and consistent use of benzoyl peroxide (I use the acne.or regimen) is the only thing that helps my skin. So thank you for explaining why it works!
Me too! but it dries the hell outta my skin to the point where it causes redness and burns from moisturisers, basically very irritated skin and im on my 5th month. Might look into other BP products like the one from Paulas choice :D

I apply that after every shower, and also before bed. Be careful about sun exposure and also with clothes and fabrics because it can bleach things fairly easily. Still, I won’t go back to other treatments. For the first time in my adult life I feel liberated from the scourge of acne.
I recently moved and have well water. very hard water. My skin has been awful, breaking out, itchy. It's horrible. can you do a video about skin care and water??
Yayyy benzoyl peroxide!! I was really suffering with hormonal acne and cysts on my jaw 3 years ago, and tried an over the counter acne med out of desperation. It turned out to have active ingredient BP. It worked better than any medication I was prescribed and I continue to use it 3 times a week for prevention. Love benzoyl peroxide!!
I’m currently using BP from acne.org because I had the same issues! I’ve been on it for two weeks and I’ve already seen a difference as in no new breakouts. I’m hoping for continued good results! :)
I am so pleased to have found you. I had given up on my face the last few years as it is so reactive to ingredients, and some allergies to ingredients, it was wrecked. Its rested long enough, and now, with your help slowly being repaired, never to be as good as it was, but for an almost 60 year old, I'll be pleased if I can cleanse it, and use BP or Salicylic Acid to help turn over cells. A great sunscreen with mineral and hopefully a moisturizer included, I will be happy
I'm currently using the Rodan and Fields Unblemish system. I got very miserable and desperate and ordered it through a family friend. It contains sulfur, benzoyl peroxide and glycolic acid in its 4 step system. It's really expensive but it's helped clear my acne a lot. I'm going to continue with the system as I've only been on it for less than 2 months. Once it hopefully clears my skin, I will try working in these more affordable options and hopefully transition out of that system. Thank you for educating us, so that we're more aware of what to look out for!
I did use this as an effective spot treatment. Not acne prone so I prefer to use azelaic acid in the morning as needed and Tretinoin at night. Really like your single ingredient videos.
BP really saved my ass as a pimply teen 😄 Don’t miss waking up with a faintly sore feeling face though....wish, I had known about higher strength not equaling better results back then. Not to mention, the option of using a wash. Or all the other stuff, you’re teaching us 👍
Happy Tuesday, Dr. Dray. Thanks for teaching us about reading the labels & knowing/understanding active ingredients. Someone I know was pushing this really expensive “miracle cream” which was really just overpriced BP. 🤷🏼♀️
I bought Panoxyl 10% Benzoyl Peroxide, just recently after your recommendation, and I was outstanded by what happened. I don't know if it was a placebo in my brain that wanted it to work, but straight away, I noticed how my skin was looking BETTER after just one use. Smoother and brighter. I use it at night, a couple of nights a week on my T-Zone and jawline area, and my acne vanished after week 1. My skin tolerated it well too, no irritation. Phenomenal, simple solution. Simplicity is the way to go.
I used to use benzoyl peroxide consistently and it was very effective. Then I decided I needed to be more natural with my skin care. That was a bad idea because I broke out BAD. Wishing I had seen this video sooner. Especially since I used topical and oral antibiotics. No one ever told me to use benzoyl peroxide in tandem with the antibiotics. I’ve just started using topical antibiotics again and I’m super grateful I saw this. Thanks you sooo much.
I love how very passionate you are whilst talking about benzoyl peroxide. It's clear to see the expressions on your face and hear the tone of your voice, in an excited manner, to give this information to the rest of the world. I LOVE IT! So grateful for your channel, I've been decluttering my product baskets and following your skin care routine over the past few weeks. Night and day difference in my skin, thank you so much Dr. Dray!
I am just watching this before with horrible acne. Now, I am watching this again with 90% clear face. This product is very helpful for acne, it heals ur acne quickly. I had an acne breakout since last week of october which is my acne are big with pus. Epiduo helped me a lot. Now, dark spots and a little scarring are my problem.
LOL! Love the analogy in the beginning. Acne sure can feel like a gang fight. BP is misunderstood I think. Thank you for talking about it. I use Clean & Clear Persa-Gel 10 and love it. It's strong but I only use a tiny amount over problem areas and then thoroughly moisturize. Thank you for all your wonderful information and research!
My Dr put me on Rx clindamycin BP cream in PM , pad in AM along with Doxycycline for rosacea acne. I was seriously skeptical but 🙌 hallelujah it’s working
I just bought BP because i sometimes have big pustules due to my acne rosacea as well. Did you use BP as a spot treatment after moisturizer (to buffer) or how did you use it? I am very interested! Thanks in advance
Being nice to your skin will be what saves your skin barrier. Benzoyl peroxide is extremely harsh, but it is very effective at being a band-aid solution at healing acne. So is to be used with proper caution. ♡ Then taking care of your inner body (health wise) + what you apply onto your skin, after to avoid future acne.
This makes me excited to try it! But i also wanna cry rn thinking about still struggling with acne even now into my late twenties, and bc i know this huge painful pimple on my face won't go away by the time I have to do a video call with coworkers in the morning. This condition can really crumble your confidence even after having it for years
Got put on Epiduo and the first 2-3 weeks was one of the most painful things i've experienced. Extremely painful burning and stinging. (couldn't even cry from pain because the tears stung my skin 😂) I still get stinging every now and then but it really cleared up my face and prevented any new pimples. Just waiting for scaring to fade away now.
I was scared away by the peeling of benzoyl peroxide. It alarmed me because I woke up with bad peeling flakes everywhere and I instantly moved on to salicylic acid 2%. I will slowly start using a lower strength benzoyl peroxide with adapalene and see how it goes on my sensitive skin. I hope it works. Thank you for this information. Your a lifesaver.
Thank you for another thorough review of a product that we are lucky to have access to, Dr. Dray. I hope your shoulder feels better! If I didn’t ‘know you’ better I’d think it was a sunburn 🥵
BP has helped tremendously for my 43 year old acne once I started using it all over my face. And enough of it, nightly. I wish my derm would have told me to use it with my antibiotic when I had developed resistance to clindamycin! Now I'm dealing with sebaceous hyperplasia :(
I hated benzoyl peroxide before because it always burnt my face off! And also, if left on overnight, I would het horrible rashes down my neck. I was really scared trying it again because I felt I couldn’t take it... But now I only use it in the morning as a short contact therapy thing, and have had no bad reactions yet!! It seems to help regardless! I just rinse my face with some water, pat dry and put on benzoyl peroxide. Leave it on for 5 minutes to an hour or so, depending on what my day looks like, and then just wash my face with my regular face wash (I dont have a benzoyl face wash). Totally want to suggest people trying it out this way!!! Especially when you’re getting used to the stuff. Im actually sitting with the cream on my face right now. I do suggest NOT putting it on your neck, not even a little bit. If I go below my jawline, even on one spot, I stil get the rashes. Its strong stuff :). But by doing the short contact method I have had NO peeling yet!
Hi Dr Dray, I would really appreciate some input on my plan. So currently I am using differin gel every night. I am washing my face and applying moisturizer prior to applying the differin. After watching this video I think my skin could benefit from some Benzoyl Peroxide. I liked the wash idea the most. Correct me if I am wrong but should I do the routine in this order? 1. BP wash and rinse 2. Cetaphil gentle cleanser (or not?) 3. CeraVe daily moisturizer 4. Apply differin 5. Go to bed AM 1. BP cleanser again? 2. Cetaphil gentle cleanser? 3. CeraVe daily moisturizer? Can I use the panoxyl stuff anywhere on my body? Thanks for any input! I’m so tired of dealing with my skin it’s so annoying. ALSO, what is your favorite go to moisturizer?
I’m probably one of the few acne prone people to not like BP! Maybe I wasn’t using it right? 🙈 Tretinoin has worked SO well for me instead. I follow your method of moisturising first so my skin is looking great - I’ve even made videos on here documenting my process and acne journey! Thank you!!! ❤️
I used to think I was allergic to BP but moisturizing before using Epiduo(BP and differin) makes a world of difference. I'm so grateful that I found this channel!
Dr. Dray, You helped me not feel guilty for using BP. So many estheticians and consultants I've spoke to about my skin are pushing me to get off of BP even though its what clears me the best. I'm also so glad to hear it doesn't age my skin and create free radicals. That was always in the back of my mind. I've often wondered that maybe it appears to age skin if you don't moisturize enough and that is why it gets demonized...What do you think? Thank you!
Love these single ingredient talks! There is so much information, it’s hard to keep track of everything and what everything does. The single ingredient talks is like giving us vocabulary to understand the other talks. All your videos are so super helpful. Thank you so very much for having a TH-cam channel and for sharing your knowledge in an understandable manner. You are a true gem. 😊💙💙
Benzoylperoxide has worked so well for me. I had moderate acne for years, and started benzoylperoxide 5% twice a day 3 months ago. My skin has cleared up for 90%. Now i sometimes have one pimple on my entire face when I used to always have at least 5-10 at any time. Mainly left with redness and some small scars. Hope the redness will fade away on it’s own in the coming months. Very happy with how my skin looks now! And also great: I only spend like €8 on two tubes.
My insurance wouldn’t cover benzaclin so I had to get topical Clindamycin and I’ve been using it alone. About to go get some benzoyl peroxide acne wash. So glad I watched this video!
Love these types of videos from you. I learn all the things my 'PA' derm. fail to inform me. I'd see you, if I could, I wouldn't still be suffering with zits almost a year after seeing the PA derm. multiple times. 😖
Hi! I like the way you explain! We understand very well the role of the product with the example of the battle with one or more individuals. We know that this active ingredient will fight the whole problem. I think it's important to know what you put on your face. Know how benzoyl peroxide works and what the side effects can be on our skin. If you go to the dermatologist, it will be easier to understand the instructions and ask specific questions. I don't have this problem but if I know someone who has acne, I can give them the name of this video as a reference before going for a consultation. Thank you!
This video was a HUGE hep to me and I cannot thank you enough. I am 74 years old and do battle with Rosacea and those terrible bumps deep under the skin that never come to the surface but hurt like crazy when I accidentally touch one. It feels like I have hit a nerve! I tried the Equate version 10% and my face swelled and eyes got puffy, so that may be too strong for my pale Irish skin. I will try the wash instead.
Neutrogena clear pore cleanser is an God send, I use it everyday twice a day! I’ve boughten it for many other people too, I’m like ‘look, your skin will throw a temper tantrum at first, but if you persevere the results will be worth it!’
For the longest time I've been using a 10% benzoyl peroxide (that I buy for 3$ at target) and a plain baby wash as a cleanser.. only thing that seemed to ever work for my acne. If I miss a day of no benzoyl peroxide, my face will break out.
BP even as a spot treatment makes my entire face blow up like I was stung by a swarm of bees..red, burning, completely swollen for 3 days. So embarrassing! I've tested it twice and I don't want to test it again 😖
I'm going to give this a try. SA causes an allergic reaction in my eyes, even though I don't get it in my eyes or near my eyes, other than the side of my temples, which is where the acne is and along my outer cheek area. The acne I have is bumpy skin (no white heads, no black heads and not typical pimples) and when I push on them, clear oil comes out. I'm 50 years old and this is a first for me.
Hi Dr Dray! Love your efforts to educate people on basic dermatological concepts! I’m a final year medical student from Australia and looking to get into dermatology as well :) Just an idea for a video I think could be really interesting is the principle or method of short contact therapy. In particular maybe a kind of literature review covering active ingredients (like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, tretinoin, sulfur, antifungals etc) in a wash off form (or even rinsing off topical medication after a few minutes) compared to leave on products, in terms of efficacy and irritation. You’ve touched on this a lot regarding salicylic acid/benzoyl peroxide washes, but it would be nice to hear your view on the effectiveness/tolerability of other irritating regimes like tretinoin, shown to be effective with SCT in acne! Happy Thursday!
Have you done a video on Curology and your opinion on it? Also....Any real risk of bleaching eyebrows? I have never had an issue but my13 year old is starting a routine and am looking to add a BP wash, I can not be 100% certain she will be perfect at avoiding eyebrows.
Jennifermwb I’ve never avoided my eyebrows lol. Didn’t think that was a concern. I also dye my eyebrows on occasion and they don’t seem to be fading any faster than normal with use of BP wash
Incredibly useful video, thank you for it! I had terrible irritation from a 10% BP cream - fortunately I did short-contact therapy on the face (15 minutes) and washed it off, however I left a veeeery thin layer on my chest and left shoulder where I was having a breakout for the night. About a day later I had such inflamed itchy skin! It took 3-4 days of La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume to calm it down. The first day and night I had to have an ice-pack on, couldn't sleep otherwise.
I used to have large red pores all over my t zone, After using it for 3 years, BP has controlled my acne to the point where I only hav 3 or 4 small pores now!
Hi, did you use BP cream/gel. If so did you use it everyday, I’m thinking of getting it but I want it as a daily routine not just a couple months. I don’t have bad acne just fungal acne I’ve recently been getting??
I used benzoyl peroxide before. And my skin became more acne prone during the time period when I was actively using it. What are some triggers that might have caused the product to increase my acne rather than have the oppoiste effect?
This video is 5 years ago and it came up in my feed 2024. My son 13 came down with some acne pustules and we went to the regular md and gave us clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide and has worked great only has been a couple of weeks. At first I was bummed our md didn’t send us to a dermatologist since I was seeing some minor scars but they have healed pretty much. I guess since my kids face was totally covers in pimples he didn’t need a dermatologist. However, clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide has worked great. Great video forever, since pimples won’t stop ever! Thx Doc!
BP works really well for my forehead acne, but I guess my cheeks are more sensitive to it because the pimples on it tend to scar and look almost purple the next day. I moisturize very well and use a gentle cleanser but it doesn't make it better. Is there anything I can do to mitigate that? Thank you Dr Dray, you're the best!! Greetings from Morocco ^^
Brilliant, just brilliant... I'm going to re-watch this video with my sister and her 15-yr old. He's using Adapelene & BP in combination per his MD's Rx, but not as consistently as he should be... Your 23 minute "talk" might be just what he needs to convince him to be more disciplined in his skincare. Our sincere thanks for sharing and transferring your knowledge. Best to you. hug.
On amazon and I’ve seen some at Bed Bath and Beyond there are BP safe sheets. I’ve bought two sets and they really are great and don’t get bleached! And they aren’t particularly expensive either. :)
This has been very helpful! I've been avoiding BP due to how badly it irritates me. I saw in another one of your videos using a BP wash. That seems to be the way to go for me. Thank you for all of your honest and expert information!!
Could you do a video on Thermal water?? All this brands like La Roshe, Vichy and Avene have thermal waters in spray form but I want to know if they are a gimmick or not
@Denis Jackson I don't believe that they are mainly for hydration, my sister says she use it to calm down her rosacea but i don't know if it is placebo hahaha
As well as biotherm. I'd like to know her thoughts as well. I've enjoyed using then Avene and Vichy ones. Bioderma also has a similar product that helps prevent the itching/irritation that comes from a certain bacteria I can't name right now. But they can have a cooling feeling because it is cool water that's being sprayed out and heat will escape easier. I would reccomend it if you wear a cream humectants/emollients filled moisturized. Or to help heavier creams/balms spread easier on the skin. Where I live we have hard water, so I much prefer to use these.
BP is my favorite but idk how to cure the scars! I think the way I'm using it is wrong because I put it on my pimples 3 times a day if I'm home. And the scars look really really dark maybe I'm overusing it
Hey Dr. Dray! I just wanted to come on here and say thank you for all that you do. I scheduled a dermatologist visit to check my skin (I'm a very pale ginger, and have lots of freckles and spots) and they found an Atypical mole. After the biopsy results, they want to have me back in to make sure they removed the mole properly. Now I will be doing yearly skin checks as my risk for melanoma has increased. Had I not been watching your videos, I wouldn't have taken the initiative to get my skin checked, so thank you! I've been MUCH better at sun protection 💕
In my experience, yes. I usually use hydrating toner, humectant gel cream and moisturizer under 5% BP cream, and I am pretty sure that it's still working because my acnes would be calmer/smaller on the next few days.
I had horrible, HORRIBLE acne, tons of closed comedones and inflamed white heads on my forehead and my doctor prescribed me benzoyl peroxide with clindamycin. Before, I had been using crap products that focused on “clean beauty” and spot treatments were way too trendy to be effective... the never worked, in fact probably made my skin worse. Once I began using the benzoyl peroxide, it not only totally decimated my acne, but the scars faded very quickly as well due to the slight peeling. I have been using over the counter benzoyl peroxide (without any topical antibiotics) for any occasional spots ever since. It’s changed my life... works like a freaking charm! It’s my secret weapon!!! ❤️🙏🏼
I’ve been considering using the Panoxyl creamy wash for my bacne, (based on a previous video of yours!) but I’m just wondering how many times a week you’d recommend using it on the back! Thanks for the video!❤️
I wish everyone who uses bp would watch your videos first. I’ve seen quite some videos of people talking about bp + giving advice and saying that “acne adapts to the products” and you need you use a combination of bp and acid for better results, and that you need to rub bp into the skin for “better absorption and results”. I feel so sorry for people who don’t know better and follow that advice. Thank you Dr.Dray for sharing your knowledge, your videos help me so much, lots of love❤️
This is my testimonial that you can develop a sensitivity to any ingredient, at any age. I used benzoyl peroxide treatments for years to treat my acne as a teen. But when I reached for some to treat a breakout last summer. I had a severe reaction, something akin to a chemical burn as far as I can tell. Such a shame that I can’t utilize it anymore, it was so effective.
Sarah Dalton same thing happened to me but with tea tree oil. Used it for a long time to dry out pimples when I developed a rash. Looked it up, seemed to be a case of contact dermatitis 😔
I SUFFER (and I mean it lol) hidradenitis suppurativa and after years of trying everything there is to try, I found EMUAID Therapeutic Moisture Bar, and I finally saw the light. I wash the area every day with the soap and my problem is reduced by 98%. (I even wash my face with it). the cysts don't appear as often (sometimes I had 3 or 4 at the same time..) and they lasted for weeks, now, if they appear, they are barely noticeable, and they are gone in a couple of days. I swear by this product
I for one think we could use some more violent analogies from doctors.

Benzoyl peroxide 5% gel, fragrance free has been 1 of the only things that helped clear my acne. It’s great 😍.
Really
I'm also suffering the achne from 8 years I have done alot of treatments
BP really saved my ass as a pimply teen 😄
Don’t miss waking up with a faintly sore feeling face though....wish, I had known about higher strength not equaling better results back then. Not to mention, the option of using a wash. Or all the other stuff, you’re teaching us 👍

Jepp. And no mentioning of sunscreen from my derm back then either. Ah, the 90s 😆
Hannah Galloway, I'm just glad the bp worked for u... I tried it because of my dermatologist but it burned my skin so badly!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥
Do u use benzoyl peroxide all over your face?or just on acne spots?
I love how very passionate you are whilst talking about benzoyl peroxide. It's clear to see the expressions on your face and hear the tone of your voice, in an excited manner, to give this information to the rest of the world. I LOVE IT!
So grateful for your channel, I've been decluttering my product baskets and following your skin care routine over the past few weeks. Night and day difference in my skin, thank you so much Dr. Dray!

Hi please what moisturizer do you use
My Dr put me on Rx clindamycin BP cream in PM , pad in AM along with Doxycycline for rosacea acne. I was seriously skeptical but 🙌 hallelujah it’s working
I just bought BP because i sometimes have big pustules due to my acne rosacea as well. Did you use BP as a spot treatment after moisturizer (to buffer) or how did you use it? I am very interested! Thanks in advance
I hate how BP gets a bad rep. Like “being nice to your skin” isn’t getting rid of the bacteria honey 😂😂
Being nice to your skin will be what saves your skin barrier. Benzoyl peroxide is extremely harsh, but it is very effective at being a band-aid solution at healing acne. So is to be used with proper caution. ♡
Then taking care of your inner body (health wise) + what you apply onto your skin, after to avoid future acne.

I use the Panoxyl 10%. Another informative video!
Stacey Louise Very nice. I don’t feel like I’m washing with something weird
Just waiting for scaring to fade away now.
mas kawi me too 🙈 but I just use it on my chin and around my nose that’s where I have my acne.. how long did u use it for?
I was scared away by the peeling of benzoyl peroxide. It alarmed me because I woke up with bad peeling flakes everywhere and I instantly moved on to salicylic acid 2%. I will slowly start using a lower strength benzoyl peroxide with adapalene and see how it goes on my sensitive skin. I hope it works. Thank you for this information. Your a lifesaver.

BP has helped tremendously for my 43 year old acne once I started using it all over my face. And enough of it, nightly. I wish my derm would have told me to use it with my antibiotic when I had developed resistance to clindamycin! Now I'm dealing with sebaceous hyperplasia :(

Happy Tuesday!
1. BP wash and rinse
2. Cetaphil gentle cleanser (or not?)
3. CeraVe daily moisturizer
4. Apply differin
5. Go to bed
AM

Thank you!
Yeah that is a terrible message and very unfortunate.

DW should I use it in the morning and at night ?
Jack Baker i started doing both and now i only use it at night. My skin is very clear now but i am afraid to completely stop using it yet.

I recently went back on BP and my skin has never looked so good. I had really stubborn acne. Be sure to moisturize after
Thank you!
I watch you video everyday. It is like I go to school for lecture. Thank you for your generosity of sharing valuable knowledge.

I use Equate beauty acne treatment gel and it's the best product I've used for my acne. My acne isn't severe but I break out often so it really helps
Only use 2.5% or 5% for your first time and only use it once a day ! Not a lot, to get your skin used to it!
If I miss a day of no benzoyl peroxide, my face will break out.
but you can stop using it once your acne is gone right
Dr Dray always gives it straight, I appreciate that
BP even as a spot treatment makes my entire face blow up like I was stung by a swarm of bees..red, burning, completely swollen for 3 days. So embarrassing! I've tested it twice and I don't want to test it again 😖
Im sorry about that. Im about to try it, starting tomorrow. I hope your acne gets better ❤️👍
I’m a final year medical student from Australia and looking to get into dermatology as well :)
Just an idea for a video I think could be really interesting is the principle or method of short contact therapy.
Your videos are lessons and they're NOT boring ..

I also dye my eyebrows on occasion and they don’t seem to be fading any faster than normal with use of BP wash
it’s never bleached my eyebrows and i’ve been using it for years. it doesn’t bleach hair
@@brittanyk6651 It bleaches my facial hair haha, but must not for most people!
Thank you for this no nonsense explanation. 👏

Best to you. hug.
Lol I've ruined a lot of pillow cases and clothing from benzoyl peroxide. I only use it when I know fabric wont be close to or touching my face
Me too! And towels from drying my hands after applying it. It's great stuff but I'm pretty sure I was using it too aggressively when I was younger.
Target, Wal-Mart & Kmart claim that some pillow cases they sell r not bleached by bp

I used to put Benza Clin on my shoulders. Ruined a couple shirts lol
All this brands like La Roshe, Vichy and Avene have thermal waters in spray form but I want to know if they are a gimmick or not
Most European countries have very harsh tap water & people more often than not those sprays during their cleansing
@@kirbyb3715 That must be expensive!!
I guess I should just use both...Differin and Benzoyl Peroxide 😊 thanks

I am so glad to hear you were able to establish care with a dermatologist!!
Does applying a thick moisturizer like CeraVe on the tub before BP still let BP be effective?
i would love to know this as well🙂
Good question!
yes
I have one pimple once in a while but are really annoying. Could I spot treat with BP? Thanks
