Too much freedom will kill us | Esther van Fenema | TEDxDelft

  • People with addictions are often blamed themselves for having become addicts. But Esther van Fenema has found that many of these cases could have been prevented. To achieve this a question must be asked: can someone have too much freedom?
Van Fenema initially set out studying violin at a conservatory in Amsterdam. After four years she went on to study medicine.
Having attained her degree she worked for a year as a doctor in first aid, before starting her education to become a psychiatrist at Leiden University Medical Center. “It is the best profession there is,” she says.

There are many examples of great civilizations succumbing to individuality and freedom, it generally goes:
First comes Freedom then comes Individuality,
after that we begin to Self-realize which leads us to form Opinions.
Opinions begin to take drastic turns. Forming Radicalism/Fanaticism.
Radicals become Violent and create societal and political norms, which leads to opposition.
Political radical opposition slowly degrades the country into a violent and horrible place, committing essentially what is cultural suicide.
This is also what is happening to America as we speak.

I think the problem isn't too much freedom but a lack of responsibility. Often times, people want to do whatever they want but don't want to take responsibility for their choices. I truly belive that we are all free to choose for ourselves whether we will obey laws or not and we all have the right to life, liberty and property, but our freedom ends where someone else's begins and we should not try to force or take away someone else's freedom unless they try to take ours away. For example, if guy A plans to and willingly kills guy B. A has to face justice for his crime especially if A knew the consequences of his choices and still did it anyway then he has no excuse but if B gets jumped by A and kills in self defense then B is not in the wrong because he never planned on hurting A until he was suddenly jumped on. As for those who have mental issues they should seek help as they may not be completly able to control themselves and can pose a danger to themselves and the rest of the public.

I really think that has been caused by how many people are programmed, when it comes to the word freedom. They feel and see freedom, as something which only has positive elements, and do think she wants to limit somebodies freedom and so, giving the video a thumb down. Interesting....

Modern society turned people into vegetables. The Problem isnt freedom, its a lack of morals. Too much freedom is to people be able to make a choice on whatever they want to do. Ive never seen a happy lion caged, although he has food and "safety", he isnt happy at all. Now compare that to a lion that lives in wild nature: Has complete freedom to do what he wants, but lives in danger. Is he sad? I think that answers itself. This Talk is framed in a way to question peoples freedoms, not what our leaders and governments do. The System is the problem.

  • @migueloliveira1820
    @migueloliveira1820 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

The talker must be kidding right?!
I would choose option 1 everytime even if i was constantly coughing blood from some lung disease due to smoking. I consider freedom the most important thing we have. It's way more important than life itself. For me the real tragedy is not people dying due to bad decisions they made, it's the fact that in some parts of the world there are a lot of people who don't have any say in what happens in their life. People who have no control over what they can do, people who are forced to marry eachother, people who everyday have to do something they never wanted to do and never in their life have the oportunity to follow their dreams.
A human being has to have control over every single aspect of its life and it does´t matter if the decisions a person makes are harmful for his health. Those decisions are too fundamental to have any authority telling us what we can or can't do based on how bad it is for us. The only boundaries to freedom must be to ensure that one doesn't interfere with the freedom of other people. So long as that is safeguarded everything else should be allowed because the life BELONGS to the person. If I want i can go and learn whatever i want, go where i want and try to achieve what i want. I just have to work for it. But if i want i can also just not do any of that. I can do drugs, smoke, stay home and eat all day...hell i can even stab myself in the leg or jump off a building. It doesn't matter what i do so long as it's MY decision. Off course then the responsability for those actions is only mine, but i think it is completely ridiculous and dangerous to blame freedom for people's bad decisions and mess ups in life.
And what is being proposed is really dangerous. There can be no legislation approved to limit what someone can or can't do just on the grounds that it is bad for their health. Hell, she wasn't even just speaking of things like tobacco and drugs, she was referring to how someone chooses to spend their time. And the argument about the parents... What did she mean? She wants a government that knows what is "best" for its citizens and decides without scrutiny what they can do.
If this kind of legislation is approved based on this kind of argumentation then we are leaving room for other restrictions to our freedom to be imposed in the future and before you know it governments are deciding every single aspect of our lives. So the line has to be drawn immediately or else the freedom we only recently aquired (because it is very recent if you think about how people led their lives not so long ago) is going to be very short lived

How can freedom be more important than life itself? Freedom can't exist before life can exist. Without life, there's..well...nothing....like the empty void of space or at most (possibly) Mars, with any life it has only at a microbial level. No life, no freedom; yet there can be life without freedom. BTW, more seriously, I'd say freedom is important *only* to the extent that you don't use it to hurt, harm, or demean the dignity of other people. So I have to put dignity first, then a reasonable amount of freedom.

We should classify freedom into two categories: destructive freedom and constructive freedom.
Destructive freedom like the freedom to take drugs is dangerous for the individual, his family and the society.
Constructive freedom like the freedom to choose what you want to study in college is far less likely to be harmful for society.

Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom. Freedom to choose is God given, but we have to have spiritual discerment to recognize temptation and what is bad for us. God's law is not to limit us, but for our protection, so we can live a blessed life to our full potential. Freedom and pleasure are good things but good things can be a distraction when we replace them for God and truth, and then we will suffer the consequences.

Esther really misses the point. Most depression and disorders come from denial about childhood trauma and neglect and the low self-esteem and low EQ (emotional resilience) it caused. Parents should teach their kids healthy boundaries (both ways) and not force their will upon them. If a person lives unhealthy and has some kind of coping mechanism, this is because of the lack of self-regulation (boundaries anyone...). By over-rationalizing and claiming this should be the effects of "too much freedom"...only people with an unbalanced emotional life (or lack of) could make these kinds of claims. Physically, emotionally, mentally, energetically and spiritually we should be balanced. Unfortunately, this neglect (and denial) is causing most of the mental problems/disorders in the West. And a lot of the internet's "so-called experts" are causing more harm than good by spreading false information because of their own denial and disorders.

Those also are a product of low self-regulation of behavior or even thought process. Not all things about human nature are wonderful. Theft, vandalism, and bigotry are also natural behaviors. Yet we as a society don't condone it. There's definitely room for all people to improve.

Ottoman sipahi Apparently freedom to do that is "good" and "the answer". If SquidlyTV disagrees, then he or she admits more freedom is not the answer after all.

In a perfect world where countries government are uncorrupt and 100% a good and decent human being who look out for their people then communism or socialism will be far more better than democracy.

This is actually very pathetic because there are quite a few things to mention about 100% freedom.. we can still be free and not get extinct.. she is talking about something that doesnt work.. well can anyone tell this woman that before politics people were surviving and thriving? This is just to make the idea of slavery sink in.. she is basically saying that all the rich that dont lift a finger is too lazy to survive on their own also..

I think freedom is nice conceptually, but most people don’t really understand what it is or really want it, otherwise we wouldn’t so naturally organize ourselves into rigid structured groups with so many rules attached.
Religious, Political, Social, etc these are all freedom restricting structures. And we seem unable to function without them. You do away with one set of rules and restrictions and we immediately create another set of rules and restrictions to replace the old. Im in the US and often the people screaming about freedom the loudest have the MOST rules they want to impose.
