It explains a lot, IMO, that Torey's mom wrote a book, all about how he's a perfect lil angel, and how she's a fantastic mom, and how this whole "house sitting gone wrong" thing has ruined HER life. It seems the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
I'm a mother. I can understand that no one wants to believe their kid did something horrible. But the fact she wrote a book about it (seems incredibly inappropriate), sings her son's praises (despite him bragging on camera before AND after the murder), and then whines about how she's suffering... Well, it's just a disgusting amount of nerve she has that I honestly cannot comprehend.
(Note: I haven't read the book, but rather am going off her blurb/description on the Amazon page, which was written by her. Also, going off reviews. I refuse to buy it.)

Mothers will frequently defend their sons no matter what. It's irrational but makes sense in evolutionary psychology. Her son is her genes and she has a genetic interest in promoting her son which means biological success. A dangerous male operates in protector/provider mode but is overclocked into dysfunction. It's no surprise that many women fall in love with dangerous males and even write love letters to serial killers in prison. Overclocked need for a protective male into dysfunction, even at the risk of their own lives. Like anything, something good dialled up to excess becomes evil. All evil comes from excessively purified good. You get evil by purifying and concentrating good, so destroying the balance of the values eco system..

I agree with you 100 percent. I saw an interview with Torey’s mom and dad. The mom is completely delusional, the dad not too far behind her. They should be locked up with their son. They were enablers who helped their son become the psycho that would do such a horrific crime.

@@Sercanto Actually, many true crime shows come to mind where the evidence is blatant, and the mother will not budge. There was one where a grifter planned to kill his parents to get their house, and they went to court and defended him! And there was Scott Peterson's mother. There's an unspoken implication that if the wife had not been such a trashy b****, the murder would not have occurred. Now I have to look up Jacosta syndrome. Ty for that.

It's very frustrating when cops (or people in general) automatically assume the worst when someone seems to "lack emotion" when someone they know dies (for whatever reason). Many people act that way due to the shock and overwhelming feelings.
When my grandmother died suddenly from a heart attack, I was stunned and scared. I was only 13 and it was the 1st time someone I knew well had died when I was old enough to realize what happened.
So I didn't cry right away. I also shut down a lot of other functions as well. My aunt got mad at me and accused me of being some sociopath who didn't care about anyone. I was just a kid, and now I'm 40, and it still hurts that she said that.

It's the excellent documentary. I had trouble to imagine Brian as a perpetrator of this atrocious crime. He did a lot of growing up in the prison or it was just a great act in front of camera. Nevertheless he really explained how he feels now, had an insight in himself and empathy to others and looked like a remorseful person. If he is cold blooded psychopath, masterful in lying, he has really fooled me completely - I sort of believe him. Torey on the other hand, was interviewed with his parents' presence, I guess they wanted to control the interview. I have an impression that they don't want to Torey to grow up and take a responsibility for his action. Toxic parenting. Torey just looked like he was repeating some phrases he heard, just like lights are on, but no one home. Very detached, flat affect.

She would seem to be more concerned about how this reflected on her than the senseless suffering and murder of Cassie at the hands of her son. By denying his culpability, she seems to truly be defending herself and her parental skills or lack thereof. I also wonder about the father/husband in all of this. Fascinating analysis. One thing that always strikes me in watching your videos is how incredibly far psychology has come since I was in school in the 1970s and, conversely, how ignorant we were at the time. Granted, we were doing the best we could with the tools we had and some of the old understanding remains as the basis for current science, but the fact remains that a person with my education is no more knowledgeable today than someone who has never studied psychology. I wish I could have taken a class or two from you! Failing that, I watch your videos and Google a lot. Many thanks for expanding my mind, Dr. G!

I bet her boyfriend had survivor’s guilt even though he couldn’t make her come home with him. The fact that she was there all alone.
Her aunt and uncle were partially to blame having her house sit in an isolated area. This young girl was committed to her responsibility and it cost her her life. Really sad.

If they make it into a serial killer book it will be as the lamest serial killers in history. All the time they spent in the basement trying without success to get their intended victims to come down to them sounds like a comedy skit. What a pointless waste of lives, all of them, for different reasons of course.

"Ode to Cassie Jo": Cassie, how can we explain to you the fate that awaited you? Would you, could you have known how short your visit would be? Now that you've returned to the sky above, guide each of our steps out of love, for we remember you. Can you still hear the barking of the dogs? Do you now wish that an electrical engineer had been in the house on the night of your death? Would you enjoy hearing Brian and Tori talk about killing? They asserted the right to kill over the judgments of juries and legislatures: you were simply a victim, along with your friends. I'm sorry you had no time, no time to graduate from high school and live your life with all its pleasures and pains. Perhaps it's better this way, as you sing songs in the chorus of heaven? Thank you Cassie. God Bless.
