I have all the schematics. I have the step by step service manual. However, I would not have never been able to do it without this video. You rock dude!
Brandon you do an outstanding job on your engine parts and video productions. You possess a great blend of technical skill, humor and the ability to teach. You, of all people, never have to worry about "professionalism". Every thing you do demonstrates of your experience, education, safety conscious work habits and high degree of skill. It is impossible for me to understand how anybody could possibly dislike one of your videos. Thank you for your effort. You absolutely ROCK!
If you have a bearing holder without the holes for the gear puller rods and you don't want to spend $120 for a special tool I have your solution. I don't know how to post the video on here unfortunately.
FYI for anyone trying to do this repair at home. My local hardware store didn't have all thread in correct thread to substitute for the OMC guide pins. Found that a single 1/4-28 x 3" bolt with the head cut off works to align bearing carrier with the ring. Hint, after cutting off the bolt head cut a slot in the end with a hacksaw and a long screwdriver allows install/remove. Was a bit fiddly but the single "guide pin" got the job done.
Brandon, I have been working on my motor for several days, going by this tutorial. It was difficult, and slow going, mostly because I would forget some of the steps when I didn't want to touch my ipad with greasy hands. I was able to fashion some of the pullers from materials I had on hand, even made a wooden seal seater on my lathe. But thanks for the help!
Best video on oil seal replacement I've seen. I'm going to buy a few tools, make/modify some I have and improvise the guides and then take a shot at doing my '82 Evinrude 50 HP that the local shop doesn't want to touch. Thanks for explaining the procedure that an MMI trained wrench said was 'to difficult' for me to attempt, this should be a breeze.
Well, this was a 3 cylinder engine, yours is a 2. Probably different tools. One problem you'll have is with pulling the bearing carrier, 320737 Puller Legs are very hard to come by. For the tools, use this page: everythingoutboards.com/brp/toolsbyyear/1982.html and go to 50 HP. It'll list all the tools for your engine. Watch this video too: th-cam.com/video/UicjofWmr1s/w-d-xo.html
Also, thanks for the kind words. And yes, its pretty easy. Even with the cost of tools its still cheaper than paying a shop to do it. And, you can sell them when you're done!
Thanks to your video I just resealed my 70hp Johnson. I used a piece of electrical tape taped over the socket to set my bolts. Held just tight enough for them to not fall off and the tape stayed stuck to the inside of the socket!!
another thing I think its coincidence but, I own a 64& 68 9.5hp, a 40 a 48 (2) 50's a 70 and a 150. I learned and saved a shit ton of money watching your videos. and my troubleshooting skills are getting pretty darn good. THANK YOU!

try using two pieces of wooden dowel for the installation of the shift rod o ring - one from the top and one from the bottom - you won't damage the o-ring like a screwdriver will.
nice video well explained ,thank you very much.about eBay yes i agree with you.but its the sellers fault for misleading . not sure how much tool is worth new but anything with outboards is expensive so you get what you pay for :)
Great video, Brandon! I'm fixing my 3 cyl 75 from 1978 and I'm having an issue putting back the bearing housing. I've pushed it quite hard with a mallet and a piece of wood, but the four screws don't reach the tread. I'm using guiding pins and the original screws. I guess the bearing housing is not seated correctly. There's nothing obstructing it. Would you just push it harder? or could it be something else? thanks!
Great video! It helped tremendously. FYI, I used a flexible gripper tool (mechanical pickup) for retrieving and placing the bolts down inside the bearing carrier. it worked perfectly. It also works well to retrieve the socket when it falls off the extension! I also made some gadgets to seat the seals and used a drill press with a rugged rack & pinion to press the seals in place. It all went well so far. Planning final re-assembly tomorrow. I have a question regarding re-assembly. What do you use to seal the entire surface of the lower unit casting when mating with the motor? Gasket sealer? Other? I am also curious how you access and disconnect the shift rod. On my 1988 Evinrude 50 it required removing a lot from the top end and still was working half blind to get to that silly little fitting.
Hey, you would be a good person to ask. I cannot find my gearcase seal kit anywhere. I have a '73 Evinrude 65 Non-Electric shift (65373R). The kit does not seem to exist. Is there another year that is similar?
Great video Brandon. I have a question about the phillips head screw between the two drain plugs. If you remove it by accident and put it right back in, is that a problem and how do you realign the linkage?
Great video (along with others you have) I have 1979 johnson 100 HP and looking to probably replace gear and pinion. First time attempt. It looks like internal snap ring. I think I need either 134 inch or 16 inch long internal. Looking for recommendations and where to get.
Under eBay's policies, "New Other" still defines the item as being "in like new condition", just missing packaging or opened box. That's definitely not like new condition...
Hi! Thanks for the awesome breakdown of your gearbox rebuild! Quick question, if I've removed this screw at the front of the gearbox ( opposite side of prop but inline with shaft) on my 50hp 2000mod Johnson thinking it was a drain plug. can I just replace it? Not sure if somthing inside has dropped down or what it actually does😔 Thanks
@Brandon's Garage ok thanks and yes luckily it went back in! Just to be sure before I kick it over this weekend as ive just given power head a freshn up with new gaskets , can you confirm that the dente balls lock the gear shaft in neutral only? I can't remember before I removed the screw I mentioned wether the dente ball bearings locks the gear shaft forward and reverse or just reverse? When I say lock I mean notch, does yours notch in forward and reverse or just in neutral?
Thank you very much from Sweden!!! A question: The gasket seal compound you using, what is that? Is it like "floating gasket on a tube" you bye in the store and using instead or with a gasket OR has it some locking ingrediens like for bolts etc? Best regards!!! / Jimmy

Brandon, I have a 60 hp 1992 Johnson, the engine runs strong and shifts fine. The other day I opened the lower unit to change the oil and it was full of water very little oil. My question is, should I change all bearings and all seals?
If the oil is a little gray in the gearbox. Is it the cause of the O-ring in the part you clean at the beginning of the video? Or is there something else wrong? Thanks again for the great video Mikael from 🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪
My lower unit oil was gray because of all the metal shavings in there from shredded gears. If it was water getting in your gear oil it would be milky colored.
What other sealant would you recommend other than the evinrude brand oh great video’s I learned a lot im one of those guys that like to do it myself Thanks from Scott in Frankfort Ky
Hi Scott, I tried to find the same gasket sealer, even found a picture but what I was sent was Loctite Aviation gasket sealer #1525607. It looks like the stuff in the video and it works well. Came in a 16oz container, enough for 3 life times.

Are you going through this because you want a vintage engine for your vintage boat? or, are you going though it because its the only engine available to you?
Correct. I was given the boat, and motor. I can't afford anything new, I'm very good at auto mechanics. I am able to find all the possible parts on Ebay for it. I am just not sure if this is like overhauling a car engine? Or is the process the same? Your thoughts? Thanks man
if it idles well and has minimal to no scoring, i wouldnt go replacing rings. motor might not come apart without many broken screws, and honing these crossflows is NOT recommended if you want it to last. bore by a reputable outboard shop (not an auto mechanic that "knows" car engines therefore is an "expert" in 2 strokes), and new OS pistons/rings, but then you might not be able to find them anymore.

question for you. not regarding this awesome video. Can you convert a 3 wire tilt and trim to a 2 wire?
depends on the unit,
for some, its a simple matter of swapping the motor.
For some units, where the motor is somewhat built in, no.
first 4 screws you took out, do they usually get rusted since the unit is under water most of the time?
You would think so but no.
Exhaust tube, powerhead bolts, and head bolts snap more often; and they don't get submerged!
