    First time doing the prop shaft seals but I noticed one of the retainers was broken. What happens if I don’t replace it ??

    I just had the same problem with a 40 hp johnson. It was frozen and when I drained it it looked like tar coming out. I put some diesel fuel in it and let it set for a few days and it broke lose. Then I filled it with some cheap gear oil and let it set and spun it every time I came out to the garage and change the oil again some more dark oil came out but after a few oil changes it’s fine now. To cold to run it but I think it should work out. The thing that still worries me is the front bearing on the forward gear getting enough oil because that’s what usually breaks with the pinion gear.

      Glad you got it freed up! Tar is better than rust. I guess we'll both be testing out lowers when it warms up.

    Great video! I have a similar problem but mine was due to simply running it with no gear oil (only in idle for a short period). One day it just wouldn’t turn over. Someone suggested removing the lower unit to determine if it was my powerhead or my lower unit. While I’m super happy that it’s not my power head, I’m now stuck trying to get the lower unit unseized. How much should one expect to pay for a job like this? I’m might need to go that route of soaking it doesn’t work. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Got the same motor but I got issues with it dying when only in water. Once it reaches the 6 holes (water outlet) it dies out. Any ideas?
    Carbs rebuilt, fuel line checks out, new fuel pump, and impeller and sparks replaced as well.

    Rule number one never remove bolts with the impact gun possibility you might break a bolt lesson learned

    Mine can not get into reverse so the prop shaft is stuck... anyone have any ideas?

      I mostly order from marineengine.com and ebay. Whichever is cheaper
