I just had lunch with my 92 year old aunt who used to work in the garment industry and has a great eye. She was wearing a black coat, black pants, and v-necked sweater, with a multi coloured bright scarf and deep pink lipstick. Her hair is cut in a white bob and she always wears colourful oddly shaped glasses. She looks amazing! She adds bold shots of colour with her scarves mainly, but also has a lime green spring jacket. She's one cool lady, and knows how to wear colour without overdoing it. I love her look, and I love colour as well!

I am an inverted triangle and wear my brighter colors in a blouse, shirt or any top with an open jacket, sweater or gilee over the top. It keeps the bright color in the mid line. I also love beautiful scarves to give an accent. My favorite color is red-a warm red. I love the colors you are wearing.
When I was a teen ager,my mother taught me your exact method to test colors. She said there is nothing hard about choosing a flattering color, just hold it up near your face, and look in the mirror. You can tell right away how it looks. She was a very chic dresser.
I love the tips you give. I look great in charcoal grey, but once I bought a charcoal grey blazer made of metallic fabric and all of sudden it was too overpowering (too much of a contrast for me). I was confused why is that, when charcoal grey usually suits me.. now I know why! You know what also works? I put my hand on (or next to) the item and see how my hand and nails look. If the color looks good next to my hand, it looks great next to my face also. Works with makeup as well.

Bonjour Marie-Anne. I think 'Winters' (like you) are easiest of all to suit a whole raft of bright colours, except orange, plus they always look great in black and snow white. As a Summer lady, I prefer to wear pastels and muted, greyed out tones. I never wear black or snow white (except for work where I have to). I do wear some brighter colours but not next to my face and never those vivid 'hot' shades that look too strong for my complexion. Bubblegum pink is better rather than hot or fuscia pink. I suit a bright mid blue as well.
Thank you Marie-Anne. I'm 50 and I love bright colours! I used to be unafraid to wear the whole rainbow at once, but with age I do want to be more chic. Really I need the advice about restraint more than which colour to wear. Most bright colours bring my face to life better than neutrals, but I do find the cool side of the colour wheel is better- cool reds, true or blue greens, and everything in between through blues and purples and deep pinks or berry tones. For my neutrals I can wear black, grey, white or navy , but beige and earth tones are really hideous on me! Beige turns my face beige! Someone has given me a really beautiful caramel coloured jacket, and I'm not sure if I can make it work for me or not. I will follow your advice and hold it up to my face in natural light.
It sounds as if we have very similar complexions. Find a beautiful, large, foulard scarf in complimentary tones and wear it loosely draped around your neck the way the French and Italians do. Look for examples online. Typically, you put the center of the scarf under your chin, bring the ends around the back crossing them and then let them fall loosely in front, if they're a bit asymetrical, even better. I bought a gold colored (not metallic) dress last Fall because in my country, there's not a lot of choice of color and I liked the dress, but not my best color. I was in Italy in March so I bought a beautiful light weight foulard. The pattern is meant to evoke Southern Italy so is an orange background and printed with lemons, both whole and cut in half. Beautiful tones of yellow and green. Our weather is already quite mild so I just drape it around my neck loosely and it gives that dress a whole other dimension and makes my face glow. I'm 76.

Bonjour Marie Anne, yes very interesting isn't it?? Like most ladies I have great amount of black, Navy and Earth colours but do also have a fantastic magenta coloured trench, wear it with pink sweater and same coloured jeans, very stylish to have a full column of same colour pallette I think.. Marie Anne…..I subscribe to many u tubers but never get responses from them. But you…..wow you are so responsive and great!. Keep making these lovely u tubes! Makes my life in the United States better because I can get away and imagine being there in France and experiencing it all over again.
Thank you once again for a brilliant, inspiring, and informative video Marie-Anne. I love bright colours, and often wear brightly coloured scarves. I definitely find some shades suit me better than others, and that the texture of a fabric makes a big different to whether the colours flatter my complexion. Love that pink dress 😍😘💕
What a fantastic video! Loved all the pointers you gave in selecting where to place the color item, that can definetly make a big difference. Funny, I just watched the Saint Laurent Fall 2020 fashion show and its all bright colors.
Bonjour Marie-Änne. You look fantastic in that red dress. It’s hard to know the true colour on screen. It looks like it is cerise. It’s very flattering on you. I love the navy cardigan very much. I used to suit bright colours but I’m not sure now. People say we should wear more pastel as we get older. I try to wear more toned down colours whilst adding some colour but I will try bright colours next to my skin in the daylight. I think daylight will be the best way to know. Thanks Marie-Anne.
As always, Marie-Anne, great advice, thank you. I am such an apple shape. I will be attending my aunt's funeral on Wednesday, so I will wear mainly black but I shall add a red/black heavier weighted silk scare to detract from my awful pot-belly!!! :)
I know the comment is old but may I suggest avioding red at a funeral? If you don't want severe black, a softer contrast would be better. When my mother died, it was expected as she'd been sick for a year but the seasons were changing so I hadn't gone out to buy a suitable dress. The day after she passed, I ran to a good store and all I could find was a black dress with a white jacket that had a black belt and overstitching. The dress was sleeveless so I had to wear the jacket but it was ok. After that, I never wore the jacket because the style was not the most flattering for me, nor was the stark white, but it served its purpose.
I love bright colors, especially on dull rainy or cold days. Especially scarves and tops. Also... I love your dress and that sweater with the large buttons 😻😻😻
I think it’s great that older women wear bright colors, I’m just never one of them! I am all about the neutrals… Dark gray white black sometimes a dark green or dark blue, but those are just the colors I am comfortable and confident in! My personality is actually quite bright enough…😃🤩❤️
If you remember the old original Mission Impossible show on TV, when they introduced the characters at the beginning, even tho it was shot in color, they all had on black and/or white. I read back then that the reason was that, on colored film, the faces really popped if the clothing was neutral black and white. Given that the characters had a range of complexions, it was a brilliant concept.
Hi Marie-Anne! Of course I love bright colours, and I find myself much alive when I have it. My skin is with cool tone, so I choose according to this. Good luck, greetings and all the best!
Thank you so much. I have a beautiful wrap skirt made from a sari that I have been reluctant to wear as it quite brightly coloured. Buy no more, it will be teamed with neutrals from now and worn. Bu the way I am in my 70's with an hour glass body shape, embracing my Grey hair and still wanting to look stylish. Can't thank you enough. Greeting to all from New Zeand
I'm your age and shape with similar hair. I have one like that in shades of pink with a little green. it's ruffled and very flirty, but long. I wear a candy pink top with it that suits my complexion. I don't really like the top. It's sort of cheesy to be honest. I have to look for something more suitable.
@@ziggycat5385 yes every time she is on the tv news I am stunned at the beautiful colours she wears - fabulous coats and matching hats etc. in pretty colour combinations
Yep, and go for the offbeat; ethnic comes to mind, for casual wear. I don't wear trousers ever and I only have one pair of jeans just in case an activity demands them. I got them thinking I was going olive picking but that fell thru. I have a few Indian silk skirts that are colorful and really fun to wear. I had a beautiful pair of printed silk wide leg trousers but one day a male total stranger complimented me on my trousers and that is not the sort of attention I want to attract so I gave them away.
Now that my hair is silver I am finding that the bright and dark colors near my face accent it the best along with lip color. I think scarfs are a great way to accomplish this. I recently heard that a way to find the exact right shade is to look carefully at your eye color to match a color closest to it. So the color to the face is really important. I will have to pay more attention to this. Thank you.
Don't think the eye thing works with dark brown. haha. I'd agree about blue eyes however, and I mean the whole spectrum of "blue" which includes grey and green. for those of us with dark eyes, it can be a clue to what works and maybe gives us more diversity but skin undertone would be more critical in evaluating our pallet. Also there are variations of silver in hair. Mine is more salt than pepper but is not as white as yours. Still it is definitely "silver."
I like colour - on others . I tend to feel too centred out and visible with brights but more grey toned shaded items feel more real on me . Neutrals from head to toe make me feel elegant and well dressed , maybe a colour in a complimentary scarf . One of my all time favourite coats was a deep blue green - a shade that can't be found today - that I would think a poor investment now but was wonderful when I was a teenager .
I am so happy to have visited your videos. What do you suggest about jewelry? I love quality pieces and some bling. What is appropriate for women over 60. I am a very fashion forward person and love the art of being stylish.
I actually discovered that black on top makes me look so drained and Sao! I stopped wearing black up top and opt for accessories or bottoms only in black. Navy blue can be OK but I’m finding lighter, bright colors just shoot me a far better up top. So that’s what I’m going with now! I love playing with color and seeing how I can make it work for me. There are some colors I really love and enjoy but just don’t look great with my complexion so I use them in small touches of a Cesery instead. I’m still nailing down my style though. I greatly need practicality because I am active and have children. But I just love a more polished, chic style.
Hi, I'm an artist and I just looked at your profile picture. Yeah, stay away from black around your face. I don't think blues are your best choice either except maybe muted, warm ones. I'm thinking try muted reds, roses, burnt oranges that are more red than yellow and deep warm greens. You can also go for the pastel versions, very pastel but try to avoid anything with a yellow undertone. I took a closer look at your profile picture. You look great against that background. Take a clue from that.
Good video! I love a bright blouse or knit top! A scarf, a piece of statement jewelry, or a bright top or blouse enables me to wear black well. Otherwise I look blah! Grey makes me look "dead!" 😟 Nothing helps that! 😪 You've given us some great yios & guidelines! Thank you! Well done❗👍😁❤❤💞💞
I'm more of a "warm autumn" color season. I can wear colors that are warmer, yet bright. Naturally, I can wear some of the colors you are highlighting, but in the form of accessories or away from my face. I do love pops of "warm brights". Cheers!
I love the pink you are wearing. The navy jacket is the genius touch . I don't like the blue pink . I have an orange dress, not very bright, its my shade , but I think I shall try a dark jacket with it . That's interesting what you say about bright colours on the lower half , I'm triangle shaped , slimmer hips . I have white and blue summer trousers but I also wear navy . I like the idea of pinky / red trousers, maybe I should go for it . I do have a cream skirt and a coral pink one . The weather has been so hot its restricted what I could wear , but maybe I'll start wearing the skirts and think about the deep pink trousers. I wear skirts that fit closely over the hips and then flare usually, though I have one or two straighter ones . Thank-you for this video. Kay
@@MarieAnneLecoeur yes OK. I've just been looking at the trousers. I'm not sure , but I can wear my blue ones , white and natural . Bless you . I'm best to cover my legs now , they are so ugly ( varicose veins , arthritis etc ) Kay
@Marie-Anne Lecoeur - The French Chic Expert Here's a thought -- if you love a bright top, but it doesn't suit your face, could you mitigate that somewhat by wearing a white or neutral scarf or collar near your face?
Hi Marie-Anne. I purchased a beautiful plain red blouse for my 60th birthday. In the store i felt the colour suited me and so did the assistant. Whenvi saw myself in photos i was horrified. Tooooooo much red and too bright for my age especially as it has long sleeves. I can successfully wear red in capri pants or scarves with touches of red easily. So this week the blouse will go to the charity bins. Never mind a lesson to be learnt. Cheers Bev xx Marie-Anne when your summer arrives could you please make a video on beachwear?? And my comments about tips from your Mum are still coming. XX
I love bright colors and I think my best colors are shades of pink, such as fuchsias or berry colors. My problem is that I live abroad and the stores I normally shop in seem to just carry colors in neutrals or browns that don't really flatter my skin tones. I'm slim with a small bust so I generally have to shop in stores such as Mango, Zaras, Massimo Dutti, or H&M.
I have the same problem in my country. There is always one "seasonal" color and that pushes out just about everything else. We may be in the same country, I don't ask but if you can find an Italian brand, "glory milano" It is affordable, less than the ones you mention and they often offer the same style in several colors. They are also online so you can check if they are in your country. I only saw them about 2.5 years ago and I'm seeing other affordable clothing from Italy coming in. It is better than anything we have had in that price point before.
Hi Marie! I find that I can wear brightest blues and purples close to my face but I find fuschia tricky, need to tone that down otherwise it appears a bit harsh. And I have this one shade of jewel green, with a bit of blue in, but does nothing for my face, it just lights it up in a weird way.
It sounds as if you have a cool undertone. Avoid greens that have too much yellow in them, lean towards the blue. Same with purples. Fuschia is probably too red for you.
When I was young I was a strawberry blonde and it just got darker as I got older with always shades of red. I was never allowed to wear red or pink. Now that I am a seasoned woman.....lol.....I know that my warm coloring is perfect for an orange red and a warm pink......and I LOVE wearing the orange red.
Ohhh! I get it. Keep the color that isn’t flattering to your skin shade LOWER if you like it! I hope I said that correctly. I love clothes in blk & wh or cream or beige, etc. if I get black near my face it’s awful. I am pale with pink undertone and my hair is white. Black or navy near the face is disaster. I could wear a light scarf near my face when wearing a black dress! I know, I’m so color ignorant here, lol. I may not have described that clearly but I get what your saying. A revelation. Thank you.
Yes! Good video topic. I know you have spoken about the classic French red lip (and that's a look I love and want to be more courageous about); but a video on lipstick colors for certain clothing colors would be very interesting.
I have unusual colouring; dark brown eyes, pink and white skin with cool undertones, and once blonde, now almost white hair. Understandably, I have at times been a bit confused as to what colours suit me. I wear clear, strong pastels, navy, teal/turquoise, cool greens and blues, and white. I also wear brown in the cooler months and this year surprised myself with neutral outfits in cream, light tan, white, coffee and caramel., which I expected needed something cool like a teal scarf, but I was amazed to see I looked better with one in a caramel sort of beige. Oh hang on, you’re talking about bright colours! So it seems I don’t suit bright colours, except slightly less bright, cool colours. I am thinking of trying on a gentle lemon yellow, this summer, though....still not bright. Maybe fuchsia pink? I’ll have to try it out!
I think orange and black are the only colors not good on me, at least by my face. Unfortunately, those are the colors of my favorite baseball team, the SF Giants! 😄 Go Giants! I must tell you I LOVE the buttons buttons buttons on your sweater.

Why is this even an issue? We're not in 19th century Sicily or Greece. I have never considered eliminating bright colors from my wardrobe. I just don't understand where some ideas come from. I find that with my sliver hair, bright colors enhance my face, not take away from it, although I can and always have been able to wear black well.
Talk about wearing white blouses. I have three white linen lovely blouses but when I try to style them they don’t look good. I’m silver haired and light skinned
I too was a red head....it's rapidly turning a white colour now!!! I love red but have found not all reds are good on me. I need to choose red with an orange undertone. The raspberry reds are not good at all. It's very interesting. I shall try holding colours close to my face in the natural light, a lovely lesson to be learnt. 👌x
Hi Marie-Anne Little up date. I bought a tomato red scarf (start small) and it is a wonderful colour for me. I have seen a Hobbs jacket in the same colour and now feel I can give this a go to brighten up the basics Xx
Just a hint for all the single ladies out there. I'm 76 with silver hair but if I wear a red dress, all the men in the room notice and a good number of them will start to flirt with me. If you can carry it off, go for it.
I have big boobs and bottom, and I don’t want the accent on that. More on my taille, but I also have a short body. So I wear most of the time mid high jeans or midi skirts. My arms and legs are also heavier 😔 Do you have any advise?
Everyone has colors that are best for them and it's all relative. What looks bright on me (Cool Summer) would look pretty soft on a stereotypical French woman with Deep or Clear Winter coloring, too bright for a Soft Summer or Autumn, and too dark for a Light Spring or Summer.
I'm not naturally drawn to bright colours but one's wardrobe does get a little drab looking if it's not spiced up a bit with colour sometimes . I heard years ago that everyone can wear every colour - you just have to find the shade that works with your complexion . I think this is probably true . I can't wear orange but rust looks good on me . Few shades of green suit but I recently found a wool/silk scarf in a very dark green with blue undertones that looks wonderful on me . I've learned to stay away from yellow undertones and look for the blue ones . Like many , adding colour with a scarf is the easiest way to do it . I do have a deep pink sweater -similar in colour to your blouse - that I've worn to my granddaughter's birthday party the last couple of years .
Yes! Very true, I can wear coral and orange, but rust and peach look awful on me. I love bright coral, specially paired with white denim. But if I try to wear a pretty peach shade? Ugh, I look so washed out & sickly.
I like bright colors, but I usually use them as accent pieces. I prefer black, white, and beige. I love army green, and olive green, but I can't have it near my face. It makes me look like the walking dead.
I just started wearing a bright pink lipstick. At first I was a little nervous, but what a difference! I have tried lots of "nude" lip shades, since that's what seems to be popular. But those colors do nothing for me. I kept thinking I needed to find the "right" nude shade for my complexion. So much $ & time spent trying various shades.😞😞😞 After this video, I know why those lip colors make me look worse than no lipstick at all. Those "nudes".....barely there peachy beige, dull pinkish tan, anything with a brown or muddy tone in clothing makes me look awful! So of course those lip colors also make me look washed out and blah. Yet when I wear true bright pink, fuchsia, Orchid, etc...blouses or sweaters, I look more alive and perky, so of course that color lipstick would have the same effect. So, it's just as you say in the video, it's more important to find what colors suit us individually, rather than what's in style, or what color is trendy, whether it's a lipstick color or clothing. Next challenge: to find a red lipstick that suits me. But for now, I think for spring and summer my bright pink lip will be my signature look.
I don't wear makeup but as I've aged, my lips have faded so I wear a lip color that is closer to my original natural color which is a slightly brownish rose. They were never bright red or pink. I don't care for the bright lip look.

Here,at the End of the World, Summer is leaving us...day light becomes shorter ....a little of brightness is always welcome! Thanks for your wonderful advices!!!!!
Usually I wear scarves in bright colors... My fav is orange🍊🥕or red🍉🍓maybe yellow 🌞🌻
love the combination of pink dress with navy cardigan in your outfit. Personally i like to mix fuchsia and olive green. :P
A very thoughtful video that I’m sharing right away with my friends.
Your videos are wonderful and always worth being shared!
In times of (Corona)- crisis I just love to watch your videos even more. You bright up my day!
Bonjour Marie Anne. Yes this is using your right color. Merci .
Marie Anne…..I subscribe to many u tubers but never get responses from them. But you…..wow you are so responsive and great!. Keep making these lovely u tubes! Makes my life in the United States better because I can get away and imagine being there in France and experiencing it all over again.
Love the videos Marie-Anne. I am envious of your immaculately arranged shelves and I am going to have a Spring Clear out and be more organised.
Very helpful video Marie-Anne! I'm loving the dress on you! you provided great tips on how to determine one's best colour match
Spring fever here, so timely.
Such a joy to watch your wonderful video ....keep safe from the dreaded corona virus..it’s vicious! Greetings from the UK 🥰
Hi Marie this was such a wonderful video such great information Have a lovely week 😘
What a fantastic video! Loved all the pointers you gave in selecting where to place the color item, that can definetly make a big difference. Funny, I just watched the Saint Laurent Fall 2020 fashion show and its all bright colors.
Very useful your video. Thank you Marie-Anne!
I think bright colors helps us look better as we we age.Nothing like bright aqua or hot pink with grey hair.
Another great vid - keep them coming MA. Love that bright pink on you too! 💐
Fabulous cardigan. It’s a hard worker! Simple powerful and charming.
I love bright colors, especially on dull rainy or cold days. Especially scarves and tops.
Also... I love your dress and that sweater with the large buttons
😻😻😻
These tips are making me think to get even better results when I dress your chic way, it's great ❤ from Frances UK
You will get amazing results Frances 😃 and be sure to share your chic with us 😘
I always learn from your videos. I’m going to treat myself and take one of your courses. A birthday present to myself in April. 🥰
This is so very helpful Marie-Anne, I really appreciate you sharing this information ❤️
I think the older we get the more bright colors we should wear so we are less invisible.
The Queen of England seems to have kept up her bright colours regime when meeting the public.
🤪
Another brilliant video. Thanks Marie-Anne.🙂
Glad you enjoyed it 😘
Love the pink blouse.
Excellent!!
I had a royal blue coat my first year of university. Very styled and elegant. You'd never find it today.
You look great in that watermelon pinky-red color!
Very informative, thank you! 💖
Love these videos I’m 38 and I find pink doesn’t work but I love crimson as blue
I'm more of a "warm autumn" color season. I can wear colors that are warmer, yet bright. Naturally, I can wear some of the colors you are highlighting, but in the form of accessories or away from my face. I do love pops of "warm brights". Cheers!
I love your sweater!!
@Marie-Anne Lecoeur - The French Chic Expert
Here's a thought -- if you love a bright top, but it doesn't suit your face, could you mitigate that somewhat by wearing a white or neutral scarf or collar near your face?
XX
It wasn't your age, it's your complexion. Still, lesson learned.
love the fuschia shirt
My mom was a natural ginger red head, in her young days. She was always told that wearing red and pink was not for her. I disagreed.
@@MarieAnneLecoeur I agree!
A warm tomato red might have suited. A coral orangy-pink might have worked well too.
Love your videos
That red looks very good on you.surtain, audry hepburn, would agree with me❤️
The problem i find is that high street stores have artificial lighting. Buying clothes in that light doesn't give correct picture. Suggest what to do
@@MarieAnneLecoeur okay. Will try that. Thanks
Ohhh! Thank you.
Hola Marie-Anne, thanks for this colorful advice, you look great!
Saludos desde CDMX in the Day Without Women.
The lipstick must match the chosen color, is it true?
Marie-Anne Lecoeur The fuchsia was absolutely horrible!
No, no! not yellow! gentle violets and pinks, with a touch of blue. fuscia is hard for anyone.
I think orange and black are the only colors not good on me, at least by my face. Unfortunately, those are the colors of my favorite baseball team, the SF Giants! 😄 Go Giants! I must tell you I LOVE the buttons buttons buttons on your sweater.
Hi Marie Anne I love to wear winter creme all year round I'm tall and med build long dark wavy hair is it time I cut my hair shorter and can you recommend other colours I can wear I'm Irish but olive skin

I can do yellow and burnt orange
I love the purple on you better than pink
Why is this even an issue? We're not in 19th century Sicily or Greece. I have never considered eliminating bright colors from my wardrobe. I just don't understand where some ideas come from. I find that with my sliver hair, bright colors enhance my face, not take away from it, although I can and always have been able to wear black well.
Troppo carina ❤
Talk about wearing white blouses. I have three white linen lovely blouses but when I try to style them they don’t look good. I’m silver haired and light skinned
Salut Marie-Anne, je voudrais voir les videos en Francais SVP car je ne comprends bien ce que tu dis en Anglais
Hi Marie-Anne
Little up date.
I am not even 30 yrs old yet but i am still here 😂
Do you or your friends do anything like your channel for men?

So much $ & time spent trying various shades.😞😞😞
After this video, I know why those lip colors make me look worse than no lipstick at all.
