    Love your content mate, keep it up. I use a 390 Duke as a commuter, and its so much better than that. Its in for a new shock (7000 miles) so I'm using the BMW F800GT to commute but can't wait to get the little fella back. Cuts through traffic like a knife.

  • @mrvwbug4423
    @mrvwbug4423 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hopefully it's reliable. I know Ari Henning switched his track toy from a RC390 to an R3 because he got tired of replacing head gaskets. Though I've heard that the head gasket issue might have been fixed after 2015

    • @CanyonChasers

      2017 model year got all the kinks worked out like new head design, stronger piston and other small engine tweeks. You got to remember that 2015 was the first year for this bike. First year anythings are going to have their share of problems.

    I'm 74 and own a new Ducati Multi V4S. I'll do some tripping with it. But for raw fun the 2016 KTM RC390 I own is a gas. The first owner did all the mods so I may miss one but here goes: Yoshimura pipes (love the sound), Power Commander, JRI air shock and spring, after market airbox, after market windshield, deluxe grips, after market rear sets, KTM upgraded seat. I love that bike and ride it much too fast. But I ain't getting any younger. I'll follow your customization with great interest.

      @danw96 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could be surprised, I’m 6’2” and currently learning to ride on a Duke 125 which shares a frame with the 390’s and I’ve not had any problems on my 2 hour journeys. Might be different with the sporty ergonomics but I’d say sit on one before dismissing it

    • @jfu5222
      @jfu5222 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      At 6'0", I don't feel clownish on my RC390. I cannot, however, get into a full tuck position. I need to move the clip-ons a bit forward or get the seat back an inch or so. I think getting more weight back might be better because the rear will break loose way before the front end. By the way I'm 55 years old and have close to 40 years on bikes, from my old CB550 Cafe racer, to the long serving BMW R1100RS that I replaced with my RC390 two summers ago.

      i have an mv agusta f3 as my dedicated track bike, and last year, i bought an rc390 (2016) for the city (wanted something small nimble and wont be under-used all the time in traffic). but i got an amazing deal from a fellow who strangely had it plated but setup for the track! ohlins kt303 rear, andreani front, powerparts rearsets, driven triple tree, akra pipe. like the works! it was too good of a deal to pass up. took it to the track on a very fast local track, and couldn't believe how much fun i had riding it and passing much bigger bikes in turns. was bouncing off the rev limiter the entire time:) real eye opener of an experience and now want to make it a full time track bike as well! only embarrassing thing was realizing how much i forgot how to: use normal shifting, use a clutch, blip on down shifts and not get the rear to dance. first cpl of sessions i rode like a royal amateur :) very excited for this series! amazing content as always dave.

    Excellent choice (says Duke 390 owner!)
    For your budget, I would go: fresh fork internals, fresh shock, power commander, sintered pads. Crash protection if you've got anything left over.... assuming tyres are good.

    Some say that the issue with the blown head gaskets are due to the bike running very lean from factory. The latest generation of the RC390 tried to resolved that by changing the radiator fan to a bigger one and adjusted the engagement point (temperature threshold) that the radiator fan activates. I think that is a BS solution so I will be happy if I can see you sling that lightweight on to a dyno and check the AFR and maybe show us the process of tuning the bike's ECU or just even the before and after just so we can really see of the KTMs suffer from very lean AFRs from factory. That is the only issue why I did not buy the Duke390 (the naked version of the RC). I have not seen anyone discuss this specific topic online nor have I seen anyone dyno-tuned any 390s at all. Since you will be building your new bike as a track bike, I hope you can understand that some focus on ECU and dyno-tuning are the "mods" I am expecting from your new series. More power to you and your team. If I was just in the neighborhood, I will volunteer to help, free, I might even ask my daughter to bake goodies for you every time we work on the bike. I live in Manila by the way, so, that's how it is. Enjoy your new toy.

      My guy at KTM, whom I trust more than most, says it was mostly the fan switch/sensor combined with riders/racers not noticing the bike getting hot. So a lot of people put better sensors or manual fan switches.
      However, the bike is known to run lean and we will most likely be doing a full exhaust, power-commander and full dyno tune. One of our sponsors, MotoStation, is one of the best Dyno-Tuning facilities in the western US. So, based on your comment alone, I'll share everything we discover.

      It's getting old. It's not going to last forever. I'm trying to figure out what would replace it. I can't afford the RC 8C and the RSV4 is just way more power than I need.

      @@CanyonChasers I hear that. I just went through that last summer. My 05 gsxr 1000 had 58K on it. Still had good compression on all 4 cylinders. I was thinking. Should I maintain it for the long haul or get something newer while my old reliable is still worth something. I sold it and bought a 2018 gsxr 1000R. I have mixed feelings about doing it. I love this bike I have now. The money difference does not justify my reasons to sell and buy. I could have bought a brand new motor and still been way up on savings. Anyway its done and over with. Hopefully you come across a good deal when the time comes
