Can You Beat Bioshock With Only A Wrench? (in text form)
After an unfortunate plane crash in which I’m sure all the other passengers got safely rescued and didn’t drown while suffering from 3rd degree burns, I found a Lighthouse, entered the magic bubble, rode that bubble down into the bowels of Rapture, and nearly got got from within my bubble. Luckily there’s mysterious revolutionary named Atlas to guide me through this subaquatic nightmare world.
Unlike other similar weapon-restricted challenges I’ve done in other games, the Wrench is the first weapon you get in Bioshock, so you don’t have to try to get through any portion of the game without attacking any Splicers. Pick up the wrench, kindly break a small barrier, avoid a flaming couch, and combat is initiated for the first time. The Thuggish Splicer isn’t at all difficult to kill, especially on Easy. After being lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Mr Bubbles, I awaken with new found electrical powers which must be used to open a door. Allow me to make clear what I mean when I say “With Only A Wrench” in the video title. Plasmids can be used, but the only way I can damage an enemy is with my wrench. I can’t shock them, light them on fire, shoot them, or anything like that.
My first thought was to drain myself of EVE every time I pick up a Hypo, but it quickly became obvious that that would not be practical to do throughout the entire game. Then Atlas explained what my goal is: Find his family in Neptune’s Bounty. I tried to leap off the railing to get a surprise hit on the Splicer below, but it didn’t work. He will always be known as the one that got away.
I ended a loving mother and admired her adorable little handgun, saw a ghost in the bathroom, entered the Footlight Theater, and got an up close look at how Big Daddy deals with those who wish to do harm to their Little Sisters. It might look brutal, but that Splicer actually got a pretty quick death. I pushed onward and fought a Leadhead Splicer. These are tough, as they take 3 solid wacks to kill. The door to Neptune’s Bounty closed, forcing me to fight even more Splicers. You’re supposed to electrocute their puddle, but I couldn’t do that. Andrew Ryan then introduced himself to me and sent some goons to end me. I wanted to see them try, but they couldn’t even break the glass. Then again, I couldn’t either and I just survived a plane crash.
I had to go through the Medical Pavillion to get to find another entrance to Neptune’s Bounty. It was here I did the first hacking minigame. I hacked a Security Bot then immediately destroyed it because it’s not a wrench. After a momentary setback, I flipped a switch and was inside Medical Pavillion proper, where I saw another ghost, learned how to ring a bell, fought the toughest enemy yet in the form of a turret, then fought a Nitro Splicer that was even harder to kill, got the Incinerate Plasmid, and was off to kill Doctor Steinman. I used my fire fingers to clear a path, someone forgot to pay their electric bill, I almost got stabbed with a knife, found the Telekenisis Plasmid and was off to kill Doctor Steinman, for realsies this time. Telekenisis allowed me to catch a grenade in mid air, I’m not sure why grenades come in cans but whatever, and I saw Doctor Steinman. He seems like a nice guy. His art is a little out there for my taste, though.

I've only seen harvesting when my brother plays, I'm a save only guy just because the sisters are the most innocent of Rapture's screwed society and aren't deserving of any violence. I never truly understood the ramifications of harvesting until recently and I'm glad I've never done it. The mutant slug is planted in the girls stomachs to produce more potent ADAM. That means Jack has to literally tear the kid apart just to have a little more power. Bioshock has to be one of the few games where brutally murdering children is a dedicated gameplay mechanic.

Sadly there almost no point in harvesting unless you want barely slightly more Adam early.
The Save option gets much more towards the end.

@@LazyBuddyBan harvesting gives a bit more adam, but you get so much adam either way that it is a stupid moral dillema, I think it could be fixed by having saving little sister give way fewer rewards, but the developers probably didn't do it so that you can always use powerful plasmids and have fun, so it is a complicated issue to fix without creating other problems

I love how hilariously overpowered the wrench is when you make a build around it and max photographs out you literally one shot everything on hard (exceptions are big daddy's) I mean it even outperforms the shotgun at close range

The graphics in this game are still amazing considering it came out in 2007. Always loved the art deco style. Such an amazing unique game. There's nothing quite like it.

No it is impossible as a couple areas require you to take damage.

I would highly recommend playing through the whole bioshock series whether you've played it or not again because it is pure bliss and I absolutely love it
I always loved Fort Frolic, it and Hephestus were my two favorite levels.
Arcadia was always the level I was less fond of.

The joke here is that it is WAY more useful to save them, as you get a ton of extra plasmids and tonics for free, and like, only 200 ADAM less than if you killed them all.
Only in Bioshock 2 do you get a good enough reason to kill them over ADAM.
Harvesting them is so pointless too. You gain the same Adam amounts

I did this run a while back, survival mode, wrench only, no plasmids. Honestly some of the most fun I've had with this game

ive beaten bioshock using wrench build and tbh its the most overpowered build in the game
its literally too op, i played on hardest difficulty and guns do fuck ałl and ammot runs out WAY too quickly, the buffs are stackable (wtf) too. i wish there was one or two higher difficultys imo
shrimp dynamics so if I use the wrench on the hardest difficulty it would be easier than using guns?
@@Alexander_l322 Yes and no. You have to get a lot of tonics and health upgrades to make it work. It is way more effective then any weapon's basic ammo during the late game. But I wouldn't recommend only using the wrench. It's more of an backup if you're trying to save resources, or if you have nothing else.

On the easiest difficulty... maybe. The big daddies would be by far the hardest part and there's also the question of security command counts

Impossible. Oz cans are auto pick up
100% possible if you can get a perk with health regen or just make sure to constantly get O2 from on field sources. shouldn't be hard. especially with transfusion grenades.

@@nguyenquyetthang1326 but fragtrap doesnt need o2, you can use the for stomping, or their abilities but fragtrap is a robot so it can be in the atmosphere for as long as you want

actually yes as you can use dragon skin armor spell to reach the armor cap and not wearing armor means you can use the double armor spell duration perks
You sure can beat the game with only the wrench, and that's the beauty of how the first Bioshock was designed. That thing gets powerful by the end of the game if you upgrade correctly.

When you have to send all your weapons to continue past the door but you get to keep your wrench. "PERFECT"
The last time I played it all the way through, I suped my wrench up so much, I could one-shot pretty much any basic enemy. Just gotta use plasmids and genetic modifiers, and that was on the hardest difficulty
Now, for something harder: Beat Bioshock 2 using solely the Drill, with preference to the Drill Bash.

I too play with corpses for far longer than I should.
This man took, "give em the one-two" to the ultimate degree.
For anyone who is doing this challenge (I did it recently) another easier way to deal with Big Daddies is to skip them until later. After you get the research camera just keep snapping pictures along the way until you max research and then you can dispatch easier. Plus, the most important tonics come just laying around or from using camera so technically if you aren't using plasmids to kill then Adam is functionally useless outside of health upgrades and slots which you can get by with until you level up the research.

Why yes, yes you can :) Same with the Drill in Bioshock 2 and the Sky Hook in Bioshock Infinite. In my personal opinion, it's one of the most fun ways to play through the game and I'd definitely recommend trying it out!

I mean it's not like there are turrets, bots, and security cameras, and the Enrage/Hypnotize Big Daddy plasmids to help you in combat if you want to save amm- oh wait...
I mean it's not like nearly every weapon in the game has a damage increase mod that reduces the amount of shots it takes to kill a given enemy along with a camera that increases damage overal- oh wait...
I mean it's not like the crossbow bolts can be retrieved from surfaces and corpses fairly often and gets a modification that makes the bolts almost *never* break at *all* making it hard to *not* be full on amm- oh wait...

@@TheTaintedWisdom Higher difficulties lower drop rates of stuff, especially rare ammo. Barely used it myself tho.
Ironically, no VitaChamber mode, while making the game harder, helps the scarcity thing.

That Big Daddy fucking up that splicer was the most brutal beatdown I'd seen in any video game. I could feel that weight.
