  • I figured to do a beginner layout to go with my introduction to N Gauge videos, starting from building the baseboard and going through it step by step on how to set up a basic DC layout for those just getting into the hobby.

    Now you’ve got a train running, let’s have some scenery through which the train will run!!

      Heh, well I do work on some scenery through the Beginner layout series, though this layout is now complete and owned by a friend's son, who I'm hoping is still enjoying it.

    After years of putting it off and thinking about it, I am planning to build my first model railway layout in N Guage. Thanks for the inspiration. Great video

      Glad that I inspired you to build your first N Gauge layout, wouldn't mind seeing it when it's all done, if you're on facebook, I do have a page for my channel where you should (if I got the settings right) be able to post them on the page there!

    Just what I needed....going to do a little shunting yard in a 1'x3' to relive a long forgotten plan from youth in the GMRS!

    We all had to start somewhere and hopefully videos like this show people that getting started really doesn't have to be that difficult.

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed, and it's not really anything difficult to learn put it all together, a screwdriver some screws and a small saw will be all you need really to get started!

    • @edgein7892
      @edgein7892 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GosportRailworks Not that difficult but it also doesn't have to be expensive.
      Sometimes you could just use waste materials.
      Lightweight doors for example could also be used for a layout, just put a cheap or free frame under it and roll trains 😁

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Always do try to reuse what I can find! Though I don't recommend the wood found in many ikea like put together furniture with a coated finish, either the track pins have a hard time getting stuck in or the glue just sits on the shiny surface.
      Though that is my own experience of using them heh

    • @edgein7892
      @edgein7892 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GosportRailworks Some furniture from that store could be used to build a layout in though.
      I'm talking about real wood, for a baseboard it only takes scraps.
      But MDF or chipboard is useless, I agree.
      I've even seen cardboard being used to build a layout, seen on Budget Model Railways.
      Every day I look in the waste generated at my place of work and whatever takes my fancy is coming home with me.
      Tons of wire in all colors, wood, plywood and anything else I may or may not find a use for.
      Sometimes you don't need much stuff but if you have to buy everything it can sure add up 😉

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Did try to make one out of cardboard which I got from work, annoyingly though a coworker thinking they were being helpful folded it in half when I needed it as it was but oh well
      And do watch BMR and always good tips on stuff, and my work also makes a lot of stuff which I could reuse, but bit tricky getting it on my bike heh

    I watched the video to see your train layout... You've shown me how to make a small dining table!!

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks  ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair, most layouts start off looking like a small dining table, except the layout which I built on my bunk bed, that one looked bit more confusing.
      But the layout starts getting built in the next video, this one was just to show the basics of the baseboard really.

    You are a very naughty boy. You really need to invest in a dust sheet to protect your carpet (but I see that the carpet cleaner was dutifully standing by) 😁.
    However, that was a very good description of how easy it is to start in the hobby. Well done. 👏👏

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sure I had one at one point, but my mother knows I use my room like a workshop so she's use to it now (as long as I clean it up), also the reason why I've said I don't want a new carpet cause it'll soon end up like this one!
      And glad you enjoyed the video, hoping to at some point cover all most of the basics people should know to get into the hobby, just need to make sure I learn it all beforehand though heh

    Nice job the baseboard looks professionally made and it looks strong i like the track plan that you have drawn up.

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is quite strong, through the warping in the outside beams has ruined the professional look, still works just as well just has a little bit of a lip in places.
      And glad you liked the track plan, wanted a bit of everything to show off what could be done etc.

  • @NgaugeShelfLayouts
    @NgaugeShelfLayouts 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thats a nice track plan. Ive got a 4 x 2 foot board to do next so I might well copy that idea!

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Feel free to copy, though with an extra foot you might be able to make the through station have a run around loop if you wanted one.
      Might have a go at doing a classical 4x2 board at some point just to see how much you can get into it without being too much!

    After 15 years I've decided to get back into the hobby but i don't have the space for my OO gauge stuff so im going with N gauge. Ive decided on a 4.5ft x 2.5ft baseboard so i can have a double loop with a loco siding/refueling area aa passing track through the station with some space in the middle of the board for more sidings. My only issue is ive never been good with woodwork lol. So i need to do it properly, luckily ive got the peco track plan book as well 👌

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Always happy to see someone return to the hobby, and for the most part, N is pretty much the same as OO just bit more fiddly! but a 4.5ft x 2.5ft layout is a good decent side to get back into things with!
      And yeah I've never been the best with woodwork either, my main aim is always come back with the same number of fingers as I started with heh, but do hope your layout comes along nicely!

    im toying with the idea of a double-bed bedframe to act as the main part of the structure with an 8x4 sheet on top. the bed frame adapted to mount the board

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks  ปีที่แล้ว

      That would work quite well, though like with my bed layout, might need some space in the middle to help with access unless you're able to reach the middle from the outside!

    Also because some of my locomotives have DCC Sound, I chose the ANEMODEL LD101 controller which controls both DC and DCC!!

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Currently most of my engines I've converted to DCC, just makes it easier for me personally (only exceptions are the tiny engines like the Terrier), though only got the one engine with Sound, bit too pricey for me but at least wanted the one to see what it was like!

    To power track i used 10 amp 12 mains power supply, about £10. Then i used motor controllers modules off ebay about £4 each. So can use quite a few controllers to match each line.

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I used something similar, mostly what Budget Model Railways used as it seemed to work well, roughly about the same price if I recall, much cheaper than buying a DC controller from one of the typical manufacturers!

And N Gauge is perfect for small spaces if you don't mind things being a bit fiddly. And I do find simple layouts quite pleasing, just a simple station to work with and a goods yard will pretty much work for the most part!

    Isn’t that board excessive for this tiny train set?

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As it originally was, yes it was, but I did add more trackwork afterwards (the set in the video was mostly there for an example as bought separate track for it all than use the track from the set).
      That and the 3x2ft board was a standard size board which I could buy that could get a loop round and didn't want to do more cutting than really required.
