A Newbies review: Kato Steam Pocket Line Pack Review
Have always wanted one of these little train packs, as it's just adorable (and I want to convert it into something else), but it's a rather nice little engine and surprised it's in fact based off something real!
Good points is that it's quite affordable for what you get, and quite durable, though it's not overly detailed, which goes with it being durable, there's nothing really to break!
But downsides? well it's hard to find in stock, as they seem to be popular, and it's not all that open for expandability as the motor is in the coach meaning that it always needs that part, but otherwise could still run stuff behind that with the engine at the front!

Mini-Running Session June '24 - Diesels running Amok!

Letting the diesels come out to play today with engines from different eras and sporting different liveries where I can, mostly pulling passengers today but with some parcels a bit later on! But as always trying to make sure that each one gets a spot in the limelight today with a small run of one engine to finish things off! Still working out if this format works, but as always do let me know on your thoughts below! But have got some more models to show off this month, a full set of Brighton Coaches, along with a new tank engine to do with them, a mini version of my real steam engine, the Drummond D15 and a very nice looking Bulleid 4-Sub unit. Hopefully this should be the last one where I cram in four sets of mode...

    Nice set, the locomotive is similar to the Minitrix veteran T3 or the Fleischmann loco. Shouldn't be a problem that the engine is in the car, a nice 3D print could turn it into a motorcar which would allow you to run it prototypically. Smaller lines had tons of obscure engines, if it ran it was usable. A great and cheap set to get started and it runs well, the version with the electric locomotive is also a great runner. Last weekend I was at a fair where a big shop visited for the last time because the owner was retiring and they had a sale on. Bought three of these sets with the electric engine for less than 32 euros each, they might make nice models on a small layout since it's basically based on a tramway engine.

      I have got one of these powered chassis as the power unit for my Drewry Railcar, works very nicely and DCC'd mostly well. Think others tend to use it for diesels and the like where you can hide the wheels, I do have an ideal of a loco to make for it (not for this particular chassis however), the little LSWR Electric shunter might be able to work with it. I did pay fair bit more than that for this one, but it's out of stock at Traintraks so it's the usual eBay prices heh.

      @@GosportRailworks Never thought about DCC to be honest. But ofcourse if you take a chassis with a bodykit you're bound to find room for that. As for myself I bought a cheap DCC set and still coming to grips with it, so far I can switch on the headlights 😁

    I’ve got one of these. It runs similarly…needing to be a bit quicker than ideal, but ok otherwise. I use it to represent a restored standard gauge light railway locomotive and consist…a sort of ‘Colonel Stephens type’ train…with a wannabe/frustrated express loco driver on the footplate (those poor passengers!) I’ve also got the small electric loco from Kato. I use it to represent a (fictional) prototype undergoing testing. It looks fine hauling the old Lima Minitrix Mk1’s I’ve got (nice little models but obviously they have scale issues). The small Kato electric loco is actually my best runner, better even than my up-to-date Farish models! I suppose it all comes down to whether or not someone wants to be strictly prototypical. Personally, I’m a ‘train set’ kind of guy rather than a ‘proper’ railway modeller. I enjoy both more historically accurate and also ‘Rule One’ running sessions, so I’m fine with those models myself. God bless.

      @GosportRailworks 22 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      It's a nice little engine, though would be nice for other prototype options but oh well heh I do want to review the Kato electric engine, and also use it as a chassis for another electric engine I've got thoughts on making. The chassis itself is quite good, I've also got it for my Drewry Railcar and it's quite smooth, other than it's only got two axles for pick ups it works without issues. And personally I'm "generally prototypical) in my modelling, so long as it generally looks right then I'm happy, though rule one also is good as well!

    I think 3D is gonna create a lot of problems for the big brands which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Some brands just repainted models over and over again and charged ridiculous prices for them. 3D is turning out to be quite handy if you want more specific models on a normal budget, quite a fleet you're building.

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The main market for 3d printing is for low volume items, since there's no tooling costs to recover, there's no such thing as "too few" to produce anything since it's all digital and printed on demand from a universal material. I want to keep things at a more reasonable price, £30-40 a coach is far too much personally, more so when the cost of everything else has gone up! And cheers very much, will be expanding my coach and EMU range more, do need to add some SECR coaches however, but will come in time!

      @@GosportRailworks I hear you, I have certain models that go for ridiculous prices at Ebay or Catawiki. Never paid top whack for them and have no intention to do so ever. Luckily I'm easily pleased, I gladly buy cars from the bargain bin, 12 for 15 euros and just build a story around them about why they run in a specific train. But there are great models in 3D printing and I can understand people getting bored with the same locos with only different colour schemes. I'm keeping track on specific models in development in Z scale, hoping it all works out to get some very additions 😄

      I keep looking at both my 4CEP models and thinking I only spent £140 on each of them, now they go £200+ each, but I'm now in the mindset that I can pretty much replace my RTR coaches with printed ones (slowly) as would give more variety then heh. I can understand the main brands, they need to make a profit so have to aim for what will likely sell, but yes it does make things a bit samey in general. And have been interested in looking at smaller scales, though will have to find space to put more layouts somewhere heh

    • @edgein7892
      @edgein7892 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@GosportRailworks In my opinion main brands rely a bit too much on their name and not for producing new stuff. Ofcourse there are brands that serve a small market eg British models but all production is abroad, they use older molds and perhaps they even use slave labour. That doen't really justify these high prices. Piko also has nice models but no way that I would pay 350 for a loco that even has fragile plastic gears. I may have said it before, the Class 08 by GF looks great too but it somehow wouldn't feel right to spend that amount on a single locomotive. Btw, Z has its advantages and with the right chassis you can build a decent setup in a limited space. It's just a question of finding the right 3D kit to work on but the market is constantly developing.

      Nearly forgot to reply, busy weekend, and that's pretty much most brands these days, too much relying on the goodwill they built up over the years only to waste it later on. Hopefully some cheaper alternatives will help move things in a better direction, but will have to see. Only model I paid that much for (outside the big one in the shed) was the Brighton Belle which looks great, but it's only features being that it lights up and despite power all the way through, pickup is only in the motor car, might make a replacement someday heh I've been eyeing up T Gauge, mostly for making cityscape layouts or some other silly ideals I've got heh

      @@GosportRailworks Well strangely, the Chichester one had an open day this weekend just gone apparently. My other half told me yesterday. I would imagine joining a society would be a sensible thing to do with this loco as it is a bit more complex than a good old n gauge 😀

    Impressive bit of model making that mate. All looks good to me! Wouldn’t be too concerned about any (inevitable) slight imperfections if I were you, they will easily disappear as you weather them a bit. Scratch building a station canopy is a bold move in my book and you achieved another good result imo. God bless.

      So far, without the lake on the other side of the layout, there's enough clearance for the chimneys, however will have to see once I add the lake in and double check it all, but so far it seems fine!

    Seem to have missed this project but I love it. Although limited in space there are tons of possibilities here, add a backdrop in the middle and do two different pieces of scenery or a staging yard, go wild on scenery or just run two trains at once. Great how this layout is coming alive with every bit of work you do. And as for folding layouts, when doing a shunting pike people might put the hinges on the end or just build two modules that overlap when storing them. N certainly has great potential.

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      First of all, glad you found the project, though sounds like TH-cam is doing it's usual in not showing all videos again, only suggestion is to check the notification settings on my channel (think it's the drop down menu on the subscribe button) And I'll be going with the scenery on both sides route as I'll generally only be running the single engine on the layout and glad your enjoying how it's coming along! And for the hinges, did look for the ones that fitted on the outside, however at the time I couldn't remember which type they were and went with the ones I found heh

      @@GosportRailworks No worries, been a bit busy so I don't catch all the new stuff. Just thought it was an interesting concept, people sometimes look upon it as a childlike approach but it has possibilities. And just one engine seems quite enough for plenty of action. That's all fine, vids will still be there when you have time! And people might think that, but personally it makes it quite easy to store and move about since it folds up to be a nice case sized package! Though might try another two section layout again sometime. And it was mostly just cause I spotted some space under my bed and wondered how big of a layout I could fit under there heh, been looking around my room and trying to see if anywhere else has space for another layout before I have to sell off one! Though might make this one for more ex-LSWR items which I've mostly made myself.

Your 4COR is much better than the unit that I purchased from Shapeways some time ago, but I don't think that I can justify a second unit just yet. Thanks for the video. They look great AND because I have two island platforms I will be able to use both station buildings. I really like how Metcalfe tend to provide a little extra in their kits. My only complaint is the larger building being 55mm wide will be about 5mm too wide for my platform width so a small amount of alteration during the build may be required. I have used a few of these Metcalfe card kits (signal boxes, engine shed and platform stairs & bridge - they all look so damn good - much much better than plastic kits that look like toys.

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're welcome! And do quite like how Metcalfe kits are, though do agree they can be bit bigger than ideal at times but being card they are easy to modify. I have tried plastic kits before as well, and they do the job, but do agree that without a decent amount of work they do look more on the toy side due to it's harder to hide the plastic look to them, but think they work better on the beginner/younger user side due to they don't have many pieces and aren't too hard to put together. Personally though I mostly go with card/paper builds for my own projects now as I can get them to fit where I need them to go.
