A Newbie Builds: Metcalfe Double Engine Shed Build
Well since I've made the single road engine shed, figured would be a good idea to get the double one done and out the way as well!
Did take longer than planned, though only two hours, main fiddly bits being the roof supports as they are fragile, making sure the wall strengthening cards are correct way round as well, though not too hard to fix, and just the chimneys!
But still it's a good kit, just double check some of the instructions to be on the safe side but it isn't too difficult!

Christmas Build Special 6 - Christmas on the Country Village!
มุมมอง 16419 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Down in the village, the wintery chill is in the air, the little engine sets off on it's journey to bring the seasonal joy to those dear! Just a short video to wish everyone a lovely Christmas, couldn't find the coloured lights so hope that they look nice regardless, also only just got the tree in the pic heh And the end clip just didn't go as planned... oh well, wouldn't be my video if it all ...

A Newbie Builds: Metcalfe Grange House Build
มุมมอง 22921 วันที่ผ่านมา
Time for something a bit smaller to give me a slight rest! So this time we're working on this small little Grange House from Metcalfe, and as always twas a nice kit to put together, mostly straight forward and only took just over an hour! Though I did nearly bin a piece since I didn't notice where it was meant to live, worked it out in the end, was the lean-to door! But all fitted and fixed now...
A Newbies review: Farish Standard 4MT Tender 2-6-0
มุมมอง 17428 วันที่ผ่านมา
Now then, this engine has been sat on my shelf for a little while, and figured to finally review it, though do have to stress, this was a second hand engine and it wasn't the best of runners. But to the point, it is a lovely looking engine, though this is slightly put off by the large gap between tender and loco, but can be remidied by a replacement drawbar, though that is fiddly to fit! When I...

Now then, I have built these before, but long time ago and didn't record them, so having another go just to show you! And this wasn't too long of a build, the one house being the usual hour and a half, then once learning how to put it together, the second one was in about an hour. And there weren't too many problems, mostly just me not paying attention to the instructions, but again not too har...

They've finally arrived, and yes I did buy at least one pack of each, but we'll just be looking at the pack which has one example of each wagon just to show them off today. And these wagons are quite nice, very well detailed and free rolling, though they are on the light side which could cause problems, for the closed vehicles adding weight shouldn't be an issue but the open wagons might be bit...

Continuing on with the Union Mills reviews, we now have the LMS 2P, which was a bit troubling finding any information of the prototype on the internet! Just caught up with this one James, must have slipped by in the pre-Christmas rush. Interesting little layout with convenient storage capability. I feel that the extra foliage has helped with the scenery blend to the blue backscene. With the benefit of looking back at your build I think I would choose to paint the inside walls of the case blue at the outset to avoid the difficulty of fitting them later. Richard

Then the front cab is removed and the motor is too . Then there coupled together Try it with 2 class 08 models and one of them with the cab removed and it’s motor removed too making it free wheel . Then couple them together and connect the pickups with wire . Then we got it perfectly Just get it so the livery’s are the same . Then we got some good customs .

    I have this loco, I got it second hand and it's a pretty bad runner for me on DC it definitely doesn't like the set track curves I've noticed that the driving wheels will lock up and jam after going around a curve. Shame really because it's a nice looking loco alongside my black 5, 3MT, Jinty and 4F.

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Hi James. Very good review. I have always steered clear of Farish tender driven locos. That is since I saw a Black Five on the Bachmann stand at Ally Pally running on their display track with all the driving wheels locked up. I believe it is the reason why Union Mills only made locos with inside valve gear. I hope you can get it sorted. Pete.

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Cheers very much Pete, and generally I'll keep clear of Tender driven engines, though with the limited range of Southern engines till recently, I do have the odd few outside of UM, but hopefully I'll be able to get it running! First thing is remove the broken valvegear then see how well it runs without it then go from there!

  • @billybobbassman
    @billybobbassman 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Hi James. Nice model, pity about the running issues. By the way, did you notice that strangely (as it's a tender drive) the loco looked like it was arching under the loco body between the driving wheels. This might be why you are getting pick up issues?

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Ta very much, and yeah the running is an issue, another comment mentioned to look at the valuegear (which I missed) so will be replacing that! Will also have a look at the loco while replacing the valuegear, but will do things in steps when I can, but tis a shame that I didn't notice the issues earlier and it's not running at it's best!

    I honestly love Percy However … I am concerned about that valvegear on the cylenders and the whistle too I have his 00 one myself and when I got it both of these issues came from that . Cylenders got damaged so I had to glue them on and it was torturous pain . And the whistle fell out several times So that’s two concerns for me honestly . However since you own the N model what’s your thoughts of the green caterpillar with red stripes ? The good and the bad Just thoughts on what I should expect from him . And yep I do have Percy and both of his trucks in 00 just to complete the little trio of it 😂 I am like that and I can’t help myself Anyways what’s you thinking about the tiny catterpillar good and bad ? Thanks for reading . Bye

    • @GosportRailworks
      @GosportRailworks หลายเดือนก่อน

      Personally I've not had any issues with the valvegear not whistle on Percy, main issue I've had is just his short wheelbase on insulfrog points, though could also be the points needing more of a clean! The Cylinders are quite robust and the valvegear isn't too hard to put back in, it's quite a simple mechanism, I have found that like Thomas he does pull whatever loud is behind him well, but yeah I do think he'd do better with running on either electrofrog or unifrog points (for Peco track that is, the Kato unitrack I think is more like uni/electrofrog in design so should do well on that)

    • @MaxwellTheTrainFan
      @MaxwellTheTrainFan หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GosportRailworks honestly from this . I am going to love Percy . Considering stalling on points isn’t a big issue for me honestly . Just a finger tap and there off again . Or double header with thomas ! And thank god that the valvegear is stable. I mean I wouldn’t want to be running Percy with say a goods train and then boom the cross head drops out of the slide bars and hits the sleeper hence bending it out of shape and throwing Percy of my table to the floor and making all the trucks go in a heap off the rails . I mean damaged Percy , damaged track maybe and trucks too … Tho thank the lord it’s all stable and good . Cuz I am all around going to use him a good amount . As for my plan with him . Possibly removal of that front hook . Maybe ? I mean it is kind of in the way of the detailing . I may change my mind once I get him but from the images and videos … it just looks to big for his front end … Tho one I am exited for for the up coming are Gordon and Emily. Gordon for being a pacific . And I saw flying Scotsman a year ago down at york . So fun it was . And whilst at york also saw the dean single there too . Both basis models of Gordon and Emily together at york railway museum . Pure coincidence . Anyways … I am mainly exited for Emily honestly . She looks so good and detailed . Simple but in a good way . And she has her own coaches also to go behind what match . So there on the list and everything And considering Emily looks to be similar build quality’s to Percy . Not just in green . But in the simple valvegear . Gordon’s is so complicated and I recon I would most likely drop him or something and it would all just fall to bits . Whilst Emily and I recon Percy seem to be simple Percy with one rod to 2 wheels on each side and a second rod connecting to a plastic piece to the cylinders . And Emily with her big wheel and metal rod with plastic piece to the cylenders Thomas James & Toby all having one rod on each set of wheels to couple all 3 wheels on each side together . As for Gordon’s wheelset … WOW that be looking breakable . Tho imma still get him . Emily is my most likely first buy after James . And Percy is coming before them all . And hopefully by 2027 we will have thomas , Percy , James , Emily , Toby & Gordon . And honestly I am exited … Tho my expensive journey will wait for some years till now Anyways . Have a good day . And do you recommend Percy .? Some reviews say how good he is and how sturdy he is . Whilst others have said the whistle up top is fragile and so on and so fourth about other small parts . Anyways thanks

    Great review James and lovely models. Initially I thought 'bit expensive' but only as I love building the peco wagon kits which are cheap as chips, but if you bought a similar set of Farish models, it would still be close to £70, so £85 is not too bad especially when you factor in Rapidos quality. Might be tempted myself

      @GosportRailworks หลายเดือนก่อน

      Cheers very much, and they are a bit pricy but yeah it's not so much compared to the usual Farish prices, but would assume that if they made further runs of them they would be cheaper since they should've paid off the tooling by then! Hopefully anyway heh, but they are very nice wagons personally, well made and unique, if I didn't have some already I'd be tempted as well heh

      They are quite interesting engines, and it is indeed a shame that they aren't made ready to run in N Gauge, and unfortunately the chassis for the kits are bit hard to come by easily or cheaply! I'm just hoping for some more reliable chassis come along to make them easier to make kits for but might be a while till that happens heh

      @@GosportRailworks honestly I can’t be bothered with kit models. Besides the kato 11-109 that is I mean I have never been one for taking a model apart just to use the chassis . I am all for re painting it just not removing itself completely for something new Cuz if I re paint it it’s just the same engine with a new livery . For a good example the many MANY livery’s of Stepney from the bluebell railway he has had .

      @@GosportRailworks and it’s for what I know anyways we don’t have too many small tank engines for N scale We have Thomas and Percy and Toby from Bachman from that line and a tomix Thomas and Percy too . There is 5 small engines . And for real we have jinty , pannier & terrier . That’s about it for small shunters And yeah we are lacking a regular E2 , USA yank tank & probably many pugs who can re use the same chassis I mean I don’t know about you but I would kill for a N scale Smokey joe to be produced . Imagine that and you can bet I would pay for one if it were maybe £70 or about . Similar to the 00 one what was £50 not too much more However that means we can have many more engines made like the 102 tank , D tank , Smokey joe from earlier , and others like fire less and peket and maybe even if you remove the cylenders a Y7 tank engine also Imagine the possibility’s with this . And it can be done already with a percy chassis … but like I mentioned I don’t want to kit built everything . Why can’t we just have one singular 0-4-0 chassis to have the cylenders taken on or off for a engine and have new body shells on-top for different models . Like hornbys 0-4-0 but N scale ified Or for a standard 0-6-0 we have plenty already … however not many tank engine designs like a E2 or USA tank also . Who both worked at south Hampton mind you . Just think of the possibility’s of engines with 2 chassis made we could have thousands of models produced and all fairly cheaply too

      @@MaxwellTheTrainFan There's also the J50 from Sonic Models, the newly announced (maybe again) J72 from Dapol, along with the EFE Rail J94 (quite a few new LNER designs), then the very dated Dapol 14xx (which could be used for shunting) There are also a few other tank engines as well, two Standard Classes, and two LMS designs too but they are larger engines. But you will have to resort to kit building if you want more, as the manufacturers will only make something if they can sell enough of it to make a profit after paying the costs of it, and if the numbers won't add up, then it doesn't get built. Kit building is the only way to get something truely unique and cover everything, even the less popular but interesting designs.

Below is my video if you fancy a watch: th-cam.com/video/bRxJLfFv9Vo/w-d-xo.html You know yourself getting relevant stock in N gauge is a feat and often we are left to source or make our own. I have used some Tomytec chassis and have Plazajapan to be an excellent supplier and they also carry Greenmax and Kato chassis as well. Technically the 4TC are unpowered 4REP/BEP's as both use the mk2 cab ends, some of the express Portsmouth line traction motors from the GRI's etc found their way to the Bournemouth traffic split between the 4CEP's and the overflow was fitted to the Bournemouth units as the older traction motors were the most powerful on the SR EMU's needed for the fast expresses. Back in the day of the ferry trains, a triple 4CEP and MLV was just about as fast as you could get on the SR as the MLV motor was rated for hauling 4 cars but only had to push a single car so the tractive effort was for a 16 car formation with only 13 cars to move made them very nippy indeed. Fond memories of catching the fast boat train during summer holidays at Bromley South, pre-Jaffa and Jaffa sets with the buffet car set in the middle, always enjoyed a BR cup of char and a sausage and bacon sandwich (ironically the train called at Sandwich) and heading on down to Margate for a jolly up. Sometimes I would work my way round the coast to get to Hastings and come back to London on a Hastings diesel which had better buffet facilities and a cheeky full english all day brekkers always enjoyable. (I had a PT so train travel for a kid was always anywhere a quid or filled in the little boxes for 24 hours of unlimited travel on the railways)

      Not entirely accurate. The 4 Rep units had new motors which were reused in the 442s. Until the 442s the Rep units were very much the fastest units. The Cep / Bep fleet also had new motors and I agree that on South East they accelerated well with an MLV at the front.
