    Super video and commentary. It is so refreshing to hear from someone with a sense of humour as well as a love of this great hobby.

      Haha, thanks Chris! Model railway videos can be a little dry so I try to inject a little humour here and there

    First off, from a production standpoint, this is very well done. Great voiceovers, mixed in with the "shop" sounds. And the music is not annoying or overwhelming. Probably some of the best "non-professional" work I have seen in some time. Big props.
    As to the build? I LOVE it! The detailing and care you put in are really paying off. Best of all, you did it without using fancy (read expensive) shop tools. This is a great example of model railroading for "the rest of us", proving that you do not need fancy tools to get good results.
    The layout itself is really good. I have been inspired to build one now. I might expand it a little though. Maybe having the connection track become a through type mainline. It would require a little larger base, but I think it can still be reasonable to build in a small area.
    Again, I have only watched this video in the series, but I drew a ton of inspiration from it. I will definitely be watching the rest of the series.
    PS, In case you are curious, I also model in N Scale. Have built numerous layouts over time. My current project is a little 2x3 foot (US) layout that I call the Hammer Valley. Got a few videos in a playlist. I am also dabbling a little in T-Trak modules.
    Sorry for the novel length comment. Being a writer, I guess I tend to get a bit wordy sometimes, LOL.

      Hi there, thank you for your nice comment. My favourite thing is hearing that people build layouts after seeing my videos! Your 2x4 layout looks cool - like a mini inglenook with a loop. I actually planned out something similar before settling on my end to end layout.
      I guess I have done the best with the tools I have available. I think that (for the most part) it is possible to achieve good results with basic equipment, it just takes a lot longer. Setting up each straight cut with my circular saw + guide rail takes 10 mins or so!
      No worries on the long comment... I have dabbled with a little writing in my time too so I know the feeling!

    I'm glad I found your video. I'm at the design stage of my own N scale Inglenook layout. This will be my first adult train setup as well. I like how you changed it to add much more interest.

      Thanks Mitch. It is surprising how much adding just a couple of extra bits of track adds to the overall look. The inglenook is a good one to start with I feel!

    Great video...simplicity is the key....track, stock, backgrounds, scenery and figures....the correct amount can give the impression of space and size looks larger than it actually is...great stuff....keep going

    Welcome to the world of N Gauge. Very well put together first video telling the story of what you wanted and how you went about it. Your right about the quality of N gauge - it's on a par with OO these days. I've subbed ! Cheers Euan

      Cheers Euan. I have been pleasantly surprised with N gauge, just wish there was a little more choice of locomotives, buildings etc. Your layout is looking good and I like how you're making a building specifically to store it!

    I built shelf layout 8 inch wide by 6 feet. Enjoyed the build and trains run back and fourth via a geared motor turning cam and switching limit switches. Trains stop by using light sensor laid between rails each end, so that don't slam and derail.
    Unfortunately seeing them go back and fourth gets boring quick, so now have a 3-4 x 6 foot board to build several loops.
    My shelf will be a higher level and top of tunnels due space.

      That sounds very clever... electronics isn't one of my strong points but it's something I'd like to look into. The wiring is pretty busy on my layout; I think using an arduino for the point motors could have been a better option.
      I wish I had the room for a 4x6 - you could get a lot of scenery on that in N gauge!

    Lovely video, I always think of n gauge as the poor relation, but love it, only downside ,figures are so small so you need plenty of them, looking forward to rest of the build

    • @hedgehoghobbies2836
      @hedgehoghobbies2836  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Colin, there are certainly some areas where N gauge is lacking vs OO, for me the lack of variety of locomotives and buildings has been a little frustrating at times. However, a functional layout at the size of my baseboard (850 x 200mm) isn't really possible in OO!

    I like how you have shown that you can have a working N Gauge layout is such a little space. Nice looking baseboard.
    I noticed the dust coming from your saw just before you commented on the necessity of wearing a mask. MDF dust contains formaldehyde (it is part of the glue which bonds the fibres together) so is a known irritant, and is probably not good for long term health. Do you have a dust bag that can go on the dust outlet? This might help a bit.

    • @hedgehoghobbies2836
      @hedgehoghobbies2836  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the good thing about N gauge I guess - you can achieve quite a lot in a small space.
      Yes there is an attachment point for a dust collector from the circular saw, need to get around to building something to attach to it as the Bosch system is pretty pricey!

      @hedgehoghobbies2836  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mick, glad to hear you're starting a layout... hopefully you have as much fun with yours as I am having with mine!
      I am pretty sure this is the link I bought my foam from... but it doesn't look like my sheet at all?
      www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009A826Y6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
      Maybe they have changed the product.... you can try that one at your own risk or maybe search for XPS foam / extruded polystyrene and see where that gets you.

    I made an N gauge Inglenook, but I made the baseboard from 1/4" balsa with about 10% effort that you put in yours. Why sand and paint the board when you are going to add ballast and ground cover?

    • @hedgehoghobbies2836
      @hedgehoghobbies2836  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers for your comment Dave. I have no doubt there are a bunch of more efficient ways of building a baseboard than the way I did it. In terms of painting the board, as I had the paint out anyway I thought I might as well give it a coat, only took an extra few minutes. Thanks for watching.

    Hi. I've enjoyed watching your video and thought how well you came across. Have you thought of a name for your layout this could also be the name of your TH-cam channel as I did find it hard to find your channel on my mobile as there's load of videos about Hedgehogs. I found adding a backscene really improved the look of videos. This I did by adding a 6mm half height strip of wood to the sides of the layout and then a full height onto the creating a channel for the removable backscene to slot in. I've subscribed so I don't miss your progress.

      Hi there, thanks very much for your comment and kind feedback. I don't have a name for the layout yet, although I might name it after somewhere that I have grown up. Current shortlist is 'Leys Yard' or 'Mulbars Yard'.
      In terms of the channel name - it is a nice idea to name it after my layout specifically - but as this build is now almost done I will be moving onto other projects in the near future so I am keeping the name intentionally vague for now!
      You are right, a back scene makes a lot of difference (particularly for such a tiny diorama, it is difficult to take pictures of it where the room doesn't dominate the image) and is definitely on the cards - this will be part of the lid I am going to make for the layout which will probably be a whole episode on its own...

    • @dinmorejunctionmodelrailway
      @dinmorejunctionmodelrailway 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hedgehoghobbies2836 Fair play with your channel name and I thought as much. There's loads of Hedgehog videos which makes searching for your channel name difficult try it for your self. I'm really pleased you took my comments as constructive as there are ment to be.
      You could try B&Q if they have a cutting service to pick up some cheap off cuts. I can see you doing well with your channel. Wish I had your confidence.

    • @dinmorejunctionmodelrailway
      @dinmorejunctionmodelrailway 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hedgehoghobbies2836 My layout is a small but interesting model railway. It's a tail chaser with a branchline inner half loop. Two road engine shed with storage lanes each side. A turntable with four storage roads. DCC with a Z21 controller and DCC Concepts digital point motors. Two stations but here is the special bit once I remove the backscene the layout folds vertically to give more space. I do feel modellers would find it interesting. I have over 100 locomotives with more turning up next week. My layout is 1900x1100
