I've been preparing to do a slot car table build; what a great way to do a table top that can be broken down.
I was thinking 2x4, plywood and maybe a hinge on my garage wall.
Totally doing this instead. Thanks for posting

I am a 73 yr old Veteran with Parkinson’s who is on a fixed income and who is building his first layout starting with a 4x8 made from pieces from 50yrs of collecting. Many of the buildings are in the original boxes not put together, and no longer made. Due to my tremors I will have it wired. It is a freelance called the Chippewa Northern “ with connections to Canadian National and Chicago & Northwestern.A couple of add-ons are in planning; one a residential neighborhood with no trackage running through it.

You should do progress videos on your TH-cam channel. Even if you don’t like talking in them just photos or short videos. It’s always nice to see what other people do. And your plan sounds very interesting.

@@TGsports_Free2watch Actually Tom, it could be interesting, but I have no recording equipment, nor a channel. One of the buildings is the old HO scale White House. Going to leave the East and West Wings off, and it will become my passenger station. Have found a paint that looks like sandstone when it dries.

Thank you for your service my friend :) I have two serving at the moment. One in the Army and One in the Navy. The youngest, in the Navy, was involved in making our layout but when he enlisted, he was off to the Navy Tech School, and we have not been able to finish it at this time. They are both enjoying their time serving in much differing areas of the Service. I'm planning on continuing our layout and will enjoy the time we spend together when he is on leave as we put the kits together and make trees and chat while he is here visiting. I have decided it is important to just get "something" up and running and enlarge it later as time permits. thanks for making me think about "Gettin 'er done!" Good luck with your railroad and I do hope you record you progress from start to finish to help others and to inspire those of us who tell ourselves "we cant" at the moment. Even a phone is a good recording device now a days :) God Bless

My teen son has gotten really into model trains. I've been looking for a simple DIY train table. This is such an awesome way to make one!

My dad built me a 4x6 plywood benchwork about 1 foot high. For me, I was like an architect, relaying different designs and never tacking or glueing it done. It never got old or boring.

Just a thought. I never scored by styrofoam and have not experienced any problem. You might suggest using more 3’ flex track to reduce the number of rail joints, which will improve conductivity. Just ideas. I find #4 turnouts work fine in a yard while saving space which means more track! Good starter video. Keep sharing it is a great hobby to promote.

A 22 inch gives you 44 inch diameter fits on a 4by 8 it's always good to use the biggest radius you can

Welcome to the hobby! But I’ll try my best to include all that I used. I used all Atlas track code 100. Switches are atlas as well. The MRC TECH 2 2500 DC Power Supply for running the trains. Also a 1.5 inch 4x8 sheet of insulation foam. 1/2 inch sheet wood. Also rail joiners you’ll need.

Hi - Thank you for a very interesting video. I have a question for the experts: I used to run analog Marklin trains on M tracks, and now I would like to switch to DCC: What would be the best way to go DCC in terms of tracks (M, C, or K)? Should I use Marklin or another brand of tracks? Please, I would be grateful if someone could help me with this. Thank you!!!

Beginners should realize that building a model railroad this way is very counter productive. Large sheet railroads ( like 4X8) are very wasteful of space, hard to access unless taking up the entire center of a room, usually require unrealistically sharp curves, and watching a train chase its tail around and around is nothing like the real thing. Small, shelf railroads that can hang on a wall, and be expanded are much better models to make. If you want to see trains run in circles, join a club railroad and take your favorite equipment there - not on a 4X8 sheet!
