How to Use an Anti-Theft 'Club' Device

  • A surprising number of people that have worked for me haven't been exactly sure about how a "truck club" works to prevent theft. This video show why, in three minutes. I know that this is really basic stuff, but hey, would you rather have your vehicle get stolen?

    Just bought The Club today and after watching this video, I'm going straight back out to my car to reposition The Club so the long part is next to the driver's window! The sales guy from Auto Zone showed me how to install it onto my steering wheel, but he had the long end extending to the right. So glad I watched this video. Thank you!

      Tow truck drivers can still steal your vehicle. They may not even realize they are stealing it. There is many cases where people see a car they like so they call a driver to tow it. Sometimes they pop the tires.

    Important note: DO NOT attach the club to the front of the steering wheel. Attach it from BEHIND the wheel, between the steering wheel and the dash, so that the lock is facing IN, toward the gauges. Otherwise, thieves will break into your car, thinking they can use a dent puller to punch the club lock, the way they used to punch ignitions. I've seen at least one case where the thief was successful. Additionally, depending on the steering wheel, a club applied from the front can slide down and set off the car horn, especially if the car is parked facing downhill. I've used these since the early nineties. It takes literally one extra second to reach around and apply or unlock the club from behind.

    My friend had "The Club" steering wheel lock in the 80's for his car. I told him it was a fair deterrent but cut out switches and such would better along with it.
    I had one too, but I had custom theft deterents in my car - I am an engineer and sadly have a criminal mind (but law abiding) so I was very creative. The Club lock used plates not pins, it was very "loose" (a lot of tolerance in the keying), and I could pick one in 5 seconds with two properly modified paper clips.
    Anyway, we went out to lunch one day and he ran into a convenience store for a lottery ticket. I told him to put the Club on his steering wheel and I waited in the car. When he came out less than a minute later, I handed him his Club removed from the steering wheel, undamaged, and relocked. He wanted me to help him add theft deterrent systems for him after that.

    Thieves could hack this lock but most are looking for the fastest way to steal a car in less time so the hassle of dealing with this and the ignition are less of a chance they will bother. If they cut steering wheel, are they willing to pay $150 for replacement steering wheel and put the time, work and cost of replacing the air bag into the $150 replacement steering wheel..... Easier for a thief to pick an easier target. If you got $60k car with the club, a thief may still go after your car but if you got a $20k car with the club and the cars around you are similarly priced, a smart thief will go for the easier target.

    when I was a teenager i had some shady acquaintances that were into .. well taking people's car for a ride that did not belong to them. I saw a club save someone's car even after this loser tried for a good 30 minutes to remove the club . he had screw drivers and a manual saw.
    Also in my 20s I had a mazda Rx7 GSL-SE and someone tried to take it but failed thanks to the Club,
    I am not saying it is fail proof but it will deterr most amateur car thieves . even a professional would skip your car for one without it unless they are very determined to get your car.

    If you remove a starter fuse in a manual car, it won't stop them from starting it. They can roll start it

    Good video. You can also disconnect the coil wire when the vehicle is not going to be used and you want a little additional anti-theft security. You don't even need to remove both ends, just one end is okay. Doing just one end makes it quicker and easier for you to reconnect it yourself when you're ready to roll. Takes about 30 seconds, that's a little longer than putting the club on, but it's about as effective as long as you're not up against pro car thieves. Most teenagers that would steal the car aren't going to take the time, and make the noise, of opening the hood to see why the car wont start. A disconnected coil wire is a "cheap" and effective anti-theft measure. Also, a locking gas cap is worth the small price it costs. (But save your original gas cap as you'll want to put it back on the car for emissions testing when the time comes). If the thief does happen to get your car, at least he's not going too far if he can't get the locking gas cap off.

    Great video! A thief is less likely to go through all the hassle of cutting through a steering wheel lock or dismanteling, time after time they'll go for a vehicle without an obvious visible deterrent.

      A pro thief will cut a small wedge outta the steering wheel and remove the club lock. That literally seconds with a battery powered saw/grinder.

    Car thief's today usually carry key files which allows them to file threw the tumblers in any lock. I had a club on my truck the thief who stole the truck managed to file the truck door lock and club in 3 minutes. It's only a deterrent it's almost entirely useless against the majority of car thrifts now.

    Thanks for showing me this! I've been curious about these for a while and wondered how they'd make a wheel lock that successfully prevents the wheel from turning. And then I saw these, and thought "no, that won't work - it'll only deter the wheel from being turned" and thought it was a terrible design. So I got one and thought "yeah, this doesn't work. Maybe there's something I'm missing". And then I saw this video and realized "yes, it DOESN'T lock the wheel! I was right! It's just there as a deterrent and makes it harder to turn the wheel!" And now I'm wondering... why don't they make an actual wheel lock?

    On older cars you can run a fuel line up through the floor and back out with a cut off valve under the seat. They might make it 50 yards before it shuts down and in a panic I dont see someone searching high and low for a cut off switch they dont know is there

    • @jbbauer0
      @jbbauer0 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Basically the club is hits stuff in the truck and stops it from turning? Did you watch the video? See how the club hits the window and door, etc when he trys to turn? That's whats stopping it from turning.

      Unless they smash the side window and or front glass out?

    • @djbolivia
      @djbolivia 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It isn't intended to catch on the windows. It's intended to catch on the frame of the truck. In vehicles that don't have the "grab handle" that you can see in the truck in this video, it's possible to turn the steering wheel as far as possible to the right before putting the club on, then put the club horizontally across the steering wheel so the end that pokes out is on the left side, and the door prevents the wheel from turning. Of course, if the truck was stolen and the door was the only problem, a thief could always drive with the door open.

    • @JayJaxRHS13
      @JayJaxRHS13 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@djbolivia thats actually false the club will also hit the person driving if the club is short enough to not hit the cars interior. I own a 92 Honda accord and my club only hits the windshield so in the case where they can turn the other direction and make the club not hit the windshield it just go around and hits the drivers feet which is pretty important to use while driving

    If he had the tools, preparation, extra time and additional risk of being seen, filmed by cameras, caught or assaulted by the police/owner, that is the barrier you caused him to have rather than ZERO.
    It is a deterrent just like an immobilizer or other security device.
    Even the latest security in a multi million hyper car is only a deterrent and not a guarantee.

    The lock is the weakest point and a portable drill will defeat it easily. If possible place the club with the lock facing down near the top of the dash where only the key can access it.

  • @Meekerextreme

    LOL or you just pick it, or bash the end and collapse the locking mechanism. Or cut the steering wheel off. Also you can remove the steering wheel and drive with vice-grips. The CLUB is only a visual deterrent. I always love the "they will take the truck next to you" I don't often park next to other trucks...LOL Beat bet is to drive an XL vs a loaded up truck. hahaha That is what I do and I have a low deductible insurance.
