Just a great example of when a creative team genuinely loves both properties in a crossover, wants to have fun with it, but also wants to kick a little ass. They also really understood one important and difficult to grasp concept: converting something from one medium to another requires reverence for the original, and knowledge about what will and won't work in it's adapted form. Good stuff!
The weird thing about the penny plunderer- at the end of his debut story, he was given the death penalty. Yep, the army of ruthless mobsters, serial killers, terrorist, and at least one cannibal all get sent to the same revolving door prisons and mental hospitals. But the guy who steals pennies, we must give him the chair!!!!! The priorities of gotham's justice system seem a bit skewed is all i'm saying
"You better back the hell away from my brothers" No Leo, you're doing it wrong. You're supposed to say "back the shell away". Because that's not lame at all!
They reference this in the movie. Mikey says to donnie "You're the one who does machines. I'M the party dude" They also do the scene from the OG ninja turtles cartoon opening where mikey deflects stuff with his nunchucks... like frame for frame. It's glorious
It was disappointing how super easily they beat him in the end. Also, Leo kicks Ra's al Ghul in the balls and chi-punches him to death (I think, he is never shown afterwards). The first fight of Batman vs Shredder was indeed amazing though. Wish they had not nerfed Shredder after that.
@@SwiftNimblefoot To be fair, they probably planned that on the way. Batman would have figured pretty quickly that Shredder's getting annoyed with him in particular, and that Shredder is exactly the type of showy son of a gun to use a dangerous chi-based attack to finish off a dazed opponent. I would have preferred they clarify that focusing your chi means focusing your attention, too, but it does make sense that he's left weak to a second attacker, if you look into that kind of lore. Beyond that, Shredder did charge it up, and then it got interrupted. That'll knock the wind out of everyone. The way they beat Shredder was inevitable, when you look it that way: Shredder has secret ninja moves that trump Batman's ninja moves, but Batman has the better gadgets to compensate. Batman is, essentially, fighting the way he would fight against a superhuman in the end. Shredder got figured out, and Batman played to his weakness. Unbalance Shredder right when he's focused his chi, then barrage him before he can recover. Ra's losing kind of makes sense in context, too: he's used to fighting Batman. He knows all of the Bat's tricks, and expects an honourable fight. He's been so preoccupied fighting nobles and whatnot he hasn't had a good nutshot in centuries. I guess it really boils down to: the good guys shared the information they had on their enemies and planned accordingly. The bad guys just assumed about each other's opponents, and were busy trying to one-up each other to the point they let themselves get blindsided. I do agree on Shredder getting nerfed compared to Ra's, though. They could have given those two ninja clans some more contrast, and maybe shown Shredder usurping Ra's to some extent, or measuring ninjas against each other. Probably would mess up the tight pacing of the film, though.

On the whole this looks like a pretty good adaptation of the comic, but the one thing I'm not a fan of is the omission of Splinter. In the comic, sure Batman completely destroys the Turtles in combat, but then Splinter intervenes and shows himself to be very much on even footing with The Bat. He then manages to follow Batman back to the Batcave without being detected at all and subsequently finds out his secret identity. I think it helps fix the slight bias towards the Batman side of the crossover by showing that there is someone in the Turtles universe just as skilled as Batman and capable of outsmarting him.
I liked this one a lot, but I don't care much for the design of the turtles in this, I think it would've been cooler to see batman done in traditional TMNT style.

The one thing I don't think makes sense, since they dropped the universe-jumping, is if New York and Gotham exist within the same reality, there's absolutely no way the Turtles wouldn't know Batman is a thing.
Was waiting for his thoughts. I got what i wanted as TMNT fanatic. Cant wait for the second. Hope Splinter. April, Casey, and Nightwing make it next time.
Shatner as Two-Face was perfect casting. Makes me wish they'd do something similar with the Burton era Batman, and finally give us that Billy Dee Two-Face. I know he played the character in Lego form, but it'd be really cool to see a closer representation of what he would've looked like in a third Burton film.
Now for the trifecta of crossovers since all three have met in crossovers before, we need a crossover where Batman, Sub-Zero and the TMNT team up to stop the combined might of Shredder, Rhas-Al-Ghul and Sektor who are pooling their resources together to create an army of cybernetically enhanced mutants with near immortality thanks to the Lazarus pit. We can have a moment where Batman realizes Sub-Zero is in Gotham but when he investigates him he wrongly assumes its Bi-Han and thinks Sub-Zero is a cold blooded assassin, and this idea will be shattered when he actually watches Kuai-Liang spare an opponent which will mirror the MK games where Scorpion realizes its not the same Sub-Zero because he has mercy. We can also have a moment where Damien and Rapheal team up to fight Frost, basically a fight against the rebellious team mates but Frost actually goes traitor and Damien and Raph wreck her in a fight just destroy her overblown ego (so she can actually get some character development) and we could actually have a reference to Sub-Zero's MK vs DC ending where he is inspired by Batman to become a vigilante and joins up with the Bat Family.
I will confess that I don't watch anything these days that's animated (no knock against animated things!), so my experience with animation is really limited to the Dingo pictures Phelous reviews, but...damn that's some smooth-looking animation. Like if I ran my fingers over it, it'd be like glass. How lovely. Additionally, THAT'S what Troy Baker looks like? My years of listening to his voice for "grumpy old man of dubious morals" in video games did not prepare me.
Troy Baker is literally a god of acting impressions. Next Batman, Justice League related series/movie or Injustice game I'd be happy if he could just do both Batman and Joker again!
I thought it was good except for two things really. One was the selfie version of Batgirl. The other was that the turtles were always shown to be inferior then the Batman team. At least in the comics Leonardo beats Batman in their spar and he didn't make excuses afterwards.
While that Penguin goon looks a bit like Krang's android body, he also looks a lot like the Mutant Leader from Dark Knight Returns. So I'd say he's probably as a reference to both at the same time.
I love this movie, I've never read the comic before though I did know about it's existence before the movie premiered. My main issue with the movie is that Batman was able to kick The Turtles asses right after almost being killed by SATO YOSHI STRIKE. He even mentions that he's still recovering from it during a sparring match with Leonardo which is weird and doesn't make much sense
It's good to see that while the DC cinematic universe may be doing... shall we say less than stellar... the animated stuff continues to be great. I still remember Justice League Unlimited from when I was a kid!
Movie was good and had some kickass action scenes but it doesn't make sense that the Turtles don't know who Batman is, considering they live in the same universe.
Will they legit make Kingpin a transport company for the Utroms chemicals? Will the ooze canister that gave Murdoch his powers be the same that mutates the turtles?
Dubuya Jay Those are all legit story possibilities, lol. Also, it would be cool to see a fight between Splinter and Stick or the Hand fighting against the Foot Clan, lol.
It's always nice to see the occasional Happy Phelous Review, and how it's usually something TMNT related. One question I have - where is Gotham in relation to New York? Most people assume Gotham to be a fictionalized version of Chicago, much like Metropolis is supposed to be New Yo..WAIT, if this is the DC Universe, where would Metropolis be if not New York?
It's not consistent. Sometimes it's next to New York City. Sometimes, it _is_ New York City. Sometimes, it's in New Jersey. Sometimes, Gotham and Metropolis are across the bay from each other. Sometimes Metropolis is in Delaware. It's frustrating, really. And Nolan filming in Chicago and England certainly didn't help.
I think the problem with Batman taking out these TMNT so easily is that we really don't know how good they are. Have they even beaten Shredder before? I found this to be enjoyable, but I like the comic way better.
@@trevingrayek791 Huh. Then that is a flaw. I have no doubt Batman could take them out if he were at 100%, but probably not if he's wounded like he was. They could have showcased a more tense fight, and both side's strategic ability.
This was an awesome film. And since the higher-ups at both WB, DC, and Paramount/Nickelodeon stated that if this movie sold well they would make a sequel to follow up on the cliffhanger ending revealing that Shredder is alive, and due to the vat chemicals he fell into became Joker-Shredder, well this film did well so when can we get that promised sequel.
My question is. If they do air the movie on TV what channel does it go on? Will it air on Nickelodeon because TMNT is a Nick property or does it air on Cartoon Network because usually DC cartoons air on CN. What I think they will do is air an edited version on Nickelodeon. And an un-edited version on Toonami.
The way the mutatgen in this movie works is that humans just mutate to look like the animal that they share the most personality traits with So it basically works the same way as the mutagen in out of the shadows And neither one of them explained it very well

@@zigfaust but if we want to see Phelous look at a really great crossover he should review what was a long time coming film....LAKE PLACID VS ANNACONDAAAAAAAAA
@@duncananderson2113 I wanna agree but I KNOW DD would lose to a pairing of any 2 Turtles while Shredder can easily handle 3.
Nice shredder gauntlets! I miss the barbeque forks though.
In DC Abridged, Lord Jazor does both Batman and Joker. He's FRICKIN AMAZING
15:01 This scenes made me lol with Mike's reaction and the way he spaz pushes buttons XD
Did you see the new Adam West Batman cartoons? I thought they were pretty good.
We can also have a moment where Damien and Rapheal team up to fight Frost, basically a fight against the rebellious team mates but Frost actually goes traitor and Damien and Raph wreck her in a fight just destroy her overblown ego (so she can actually get some character development) and we could actually have a reference to Sub-Zero's MK vs DC ending where he is inspired by Batman to become a vigilante and joins up with the Bat Family.
i was thinking that the penguin goon looked like frank miller's mutant leader
I liked that shredder won his battle with Batman!
Next time lets do Batman vs Party Cop from Cabin Fever.
These videos are comfort food for my eyes and brain lol. You rock Phelous
Shredder: *climbing out of the wreckage* Soon, I shall dine on Turtle Soup... with a side of Bat-filet. HAHAHAHAHA!
How long till we get fan art of Hyena Quinn?
I’d say a few hours, but maybe a few days to get some quality art 😏
The instant it was shown.
Ive already seen a couple images. One was a lewd and the other a nice profile shot. Now we just need more of her and Plant Ivy together and we're set.
I thought it was good except for two things really. One was the selfie version of Batgirl. The other was that the turtles were always shown to be inferior then the Batman team. At least in the comics Leonardo beats Batman in their spar and he didn't make excuses afterwards.
What's worse?
Immortal Shredder,
or Joker-Shredder?
What’s the point of having Troy doing a “spot on” impression of Kevin and Mark when you could just get them both?
I don't know. Maybe they were busy.
I love that you're providing the perspective of someone who has read it, too, the compare and contrast is nifty!
"Does New York have, like, mad blimps flying around for no reason? I mean, what are they for?"
I lost my shit at that one. Good on you, Turtles.
This is a fun movie and I still love the original movie reference with The Shredder's entrance into the first batman fight
Them being in the same universe made even less sense. In the comic at least they used dimensional travel.
16:20- ... Is Alfred eating Pizza with a knife and fork?! That's just weird.
That's how the Brits do it
It would be cool if there was a TMNT/Daredevil crossover story if you know what I mean, lol.
Will they legit make Kingpin a transport company for the Utroms chemicals? Will the ooze canister that gave Murdoch his powers be the same that mutates the turtles?
Dubuya Jay Those are all legit story possibilities, lol.
Also, it would be cool to see a fight between Splinter and Stick or the Hand fighting against the Foot Clan, lol.
yes phelous plays shredder again, i realy mist shredder in phelous his reviews. its geat to see him again.
Hey Phelous, they did an Archie comic crossover with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book!
I kid you not.
I haven't even watched this yet but if there aren't Bat Hero references my heart will be broken
Edit: you're breakin' my balls, Phelan
He's in the background at least.
Donatellos face looks like an emoji and now i cant unsee it
Now we need a TMNT/Ghostbusters Crossover Animated Movie.
thank you very much for reviewing this movie im glad i picked it up and im glad you enjoyed the movie as well :)
Alfred eats pizza with a fork and knife, I love that.
Connecticut, gotham is in Connecticut
I know its late in the answering game, but, according to the old writer, Gothams in South East New Jersey.
There's a line from Leo saying they've counted him out before so I assume so.
The way the mutatgen in this movie works is that humans just mutate to look like the animal that they share the most personality traits with
So it basically works the same way as the mutagen in out of the shadows
And neither one of them explained it very well
