"We're Turtles remember!"
Well the CGI artists certainly didn't.
"We are Ogres, remember?"
@@SwiftNimblefoot "Get out of mah sewer!"
To be fair, they don't look any closer to actual turtles in the 87 show... or 1990 movie... or the 2003 show... you know, they never really looked that much like actual turtles. So, what's your point?
meanwhile 2012: what if we make them cute anime-ish slice of life teens?

SomeBODY Once told me that. Weird
3:45 Ah, so the shout-out to TMNT's rich history that also gives some context to April's character outside of "sexy lady ally" was cut for time, but the scene where Megan Fox does her usual PG-rated striptease HAD to be kept in the movie? Priorities XD
I remember leaving the cinema and thinking, "Well, that was terrible, but at least I can look forward to when Phelan sees it."
"I hate Splinter" is music to my ears. I just can't help singing along to it.
Breaking out all the classics with this one. “Michelangelo is brain dead” “I hate Splinter” and even “a new way”! Those never get old 😄
The "I hate Splinter" bit will always be my favorite TMNT running gag.
Don't forget "I got a Shotgun". The only one I was missing for my Bingo was "Thank you for that". :)
RIP James Avery, the voice of Shredder as well as Uncle Phil
That's why I think evolution is BULLSHIT
I think the "I hate Splinter gag" is going to be used no matter what
"You and I, we're basically the same person." No my dear, you're the far superior April in the movies
I mean that line is meta🤣
Tyler Perry is the only person in this movie who seemed to actually enjoy being part of this movie
True. I actually liked him as Stockman.
He really looks like Andre Meadows, whose good friends with TMNT members. How do you think SmoothDonatello and Outee 5000 are a thing?
I very much appreciate the accurate portrayal of how awkward taking off stockings/leggings actually looks.
Casey Jones: What gives you the right? What's the difference between you and me?
Batman: I'm not wearing hockey pads!
The thing I find ironic is that Stephen Amell plays Green Arrow as this brooding vigilante killer, but plays Casey Jones as this jokey fun dude. It's like he'd be perfect for both roles, but someone switched them around.
Yeah….hence my shock 😅
I'm not gonna lie. "They achieved the power of flight...good for them!" got a chuckle from me.
but man, I didn't realize how much I missed the "Michelangelo is brain dead" jingle.
also also them cutting the Judith Hoag scene is a SIN.
Sorry I have to ask but: was that lady in the cut scene someone who previously played April? I’m still learning turtle trivia 😅
@@gracekim1998 She was April in the original 1990 film.
@@fenshing thank you I ….understand why this is a sin to have been cut now 😅

And he's a cop.
the fact that they didn’t make him look like a street low life guy pissed me off
@@ttt9830 how bout another Joke Bay?
What do you get when you cross a dedicated turtle fan base with a film director and producer that screws up the source material and treats the fans like trash?!
I think Tom Hardy would make a much better Casey.
He knows how to be serious & hilarious, and is often wearing a mask in most of his movies.
This movie seriously suggested that every human has a dormant gene carried over from our animal ancestors... yeah right, and even if that were true, our ancestors definitely WEREN'T rhinos or warthogs. XD
😂 THIS was The MARIO BROS MOVIE ALL OVER AGAIN! 😐 wonder what would happen if someones ancester was a MOTHER @#$%'N T-REX! 🤣
Oh come on, it’s solid! Ever read Marville?
They could've just had Baxter throw in samples of animal DNA because he wanted to see how it would react.
Sure, it would be contrived. But less contrived than their actual explanation.
I mean, yeah, it's dumb, but it's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Dumb technobabble bullshite was always part of the show. Who cares if it makes no actual sense? A chemicals that transform ordinary turtles into humanoid mutant ninjas also makes no sense.
There are some truth to what Baxter was saying... For example we have dormant DNA from bacteria... and even a little from viruses.
I wouldn't feel TOO bad about being mean-spirited toward the 1st Michael Bay TMNT. Apparently, Alan Ritchson revealed that the other Turtles' actors & himself were made to work overtime while Paramount used EVERY EXCUSE THEY COULD THINK OF to justify underpaying them! Paramount also later forbid them from talking to the press & lied to reporters by telling them the actors were REFUSING interviews! On top of that, they weren't even invited to the film's premiere!
Eeeeeh😬
@triforian king From what I've heard, it wasn't JUST Michael Bay though. It sounded like other people from the studio (like the producers & other executives) were involved as well.
Honestly, that’s what makes these movies suck even more is that they treated the turtle actors like shit..
"I hate splinter" gag is back! Ten out of ten!
The only reason I can think of cutting Judith's cameo was because Megan couldnt help but suffer by comparison. "We're basically the same person" yeah, but YOU were actually good at being that person.
WOW this movie looks like an engaging, heartfelt, thoughtfully-written, clever and funny film the whole family can enjoy.
or not.
😆😆😆
OOOOOHHHH, SHREDDED!!!
This film kinda undercuts some of what really makes the turtles work by trying to make it into a more conventional superhero film. One of the best aspects, imho, was how street level the turtles felt, they were most at home in the grungy, crime ridden alleyways of the city and often just kinda stumbled onto the more crazy stuff by happenstance. It made them feel very grounded and relatable (despite them being mutant ninja turtles and all), they often only had their skills along with whatever gear they managed to cobble together and the higher tech stuff being things they stole from the villains who were often more resources than them. You can see the same thing with Casey, in most versions yeah he's a bit of a psycho, but that was often paired with a Rocky Balboa-like charm, the Punisher on a budget as he's often described. Making him a cop, not even a former cop, erases that vigilante quality, the kind of guy that fights crime in the places cops avoid. April lack any of the scrappiness she usually has as the most "normal" character and is just bland and uninteresting.
One of my favorite April O'Neals is the one from the Turtles Anime... simply because the joke is that... she is essentially a SUPER reporter who can get a scoop pretty much regardless of the situation. (The anime which is a continuation of the 1987 turtles O_o)
@@Nionivek
The anime is pretty amazing at least the first part the second part kinda sucks.
Your comment was from months ago but the video says uploaded 8 hours ago 🧙♂️

Eh.... surprisingly not that much. Most Ninja Turtles stories *start out* street-level and grounded, but usually they end up with crazy stuff like aliens, trips in space or magic stuff down the line as an evolution. Even the comic did that. Though admittedly they usually return to the sewers and the streets eventually.
Apparently, Pat Fraley, the voice of 87 Krang, supported Brad Garrett’s Krang because of the fact that they’re best friends. Fraley And Garrett will be right back.
They come out of the shadows? But how are they going to finish their hip-hop Christmas album, bro?!
Casey being a cop feels like something out a twisted mirror-universe, really
A twisted mirror reality where everything's a bad 80's cop movie, maybe.
He reminds me of "Terry Bogard" in that _King of Fighters_ movie…
It’s the copaganda, gets everywhere
Yeah, it felt gross. I always thought Casey was _cool_ .
I gotta say, you having Shredder and Krang constantly acting like they're in a lengthy marriage counseling period is one of my favorite running bits with all your TMNT reviews.
Probably the best change is, the Turtles, while still way too large and bulky, finally actually MOVE like ninjas, being fast and stealthy, not bursting through walls like the Hulk.
I honestly forgot Shredder ever wore his armor, mostly I remember him just being weird bearded japanese guy in this movie.
I remember my mom being FURIOUS in the Toys R Us about Ravishing Reporter April. Not for the usual reasons parents got mad about toys, but actually because as I recall, she actually kinda liked the character in what she saw of the cartoon. I recall not exactly knowing what "Why the HELL is she dressed like a HOOKER?!" meant, but I recall my dad being unable to contain his laughter any longer after that.
If I had any toy based off of Megan Fox, I'd burn it.
I really love your reviews of things like Ghostbusters, TMNT, and Mortal Kombat. Not only are the reviews just a lot of fun to watch, but it's clear how much passion you have for the topics, and it adds another layer of charm to these videos.
Also the Shredder costumes, both the old one and this one, are really nice
I agree. Phelous is awesome 😆❤️
When I first saw this movie my immediate thought was how Superfluous Shredder felt in the movie. You could cut him out and miss nothing. In fact I think it would flow BETTER without him. Stockman has more motivation to want to help Krang than Shredder does. Stockman wants Krangs technology for his dimensional research. Shredders motivation is "I'm interested"
Maybe use the empty space of cutting out Shredder to give us another Turtles vs Bebop and Rocksteady fight or some actual build up between the Turtles and Krang instead of Donnie figuring everything out by science scanning one piece of the technodrome.
I checked google for information on this extra-dimensional craft.
...don't know why Krang's people were writing wikipedia articles in our dimension but who cares!
I thought we'd never see "Michelangelo Is Brain Dead" again after Next Mutation. Nice to know it still has life.
Genuinely can’t believe I’ve been waiting for this review for the past 6 years.
Jesus, 6 years!!! That's about as long as someone dealing an identity crisis. It's about time.
This review was 6 YEARS IN THE MAKING!
@@TommyDeonauthsArchives eh!😂
Even 80's cartoon Shredder didn't trust Krang enough to actually build him a body without dragging his feet on the whole project
Indeed. That's actually something people forget.
The Bay Turtles films did have one positive impact. A case brought against them by the British Trading Standards authority established a precident that all films that overdo CGI have to label themselves as part animated.
At least these turtles actually cared about each other (unlike the next mutation).
24:16 Raph: oh no it that dumb turtle that give Leo some new way nonsense
Super Silly 1987 Animated Shredder: "Tonight I dine on Turtle Soup!"

Ah the “I hate Splinter” clip returns. How I’ve missed you old friend.
So basically they took away anything that might make April a real character, and possibly their only shot at passing the pathetically easy to pass Bechdel Test. Oh and nixed a great cameo in the process. Yikes.
Phelan callbacks are the best! 😂
“Shredded” and the stockings joke got me the hardest lol.

@@planescaped too bad it's Sunday...
I just could never get over how they looked in these movies
They should used a suite with some cgi they look so big a bulky
The thing that frustrates me about the design of the turtles in these two movies is that it falls into the trap a lot of Hollywood movies do-- trying too hard to go for "realism," at the expense of creating engaging, visually appealing characters.
I think producers and studios (and to an extent even the designers and effects artists) worry way too much about trying to make things feel as "realistic" as possible. It's the same reason why for a while, costumes in superhero movies eschewed color, or were designed to look more "tactical" and less "comic-booky." (Like the _X-Men_ movies.) But audiences are a lot more open-minded than they might think.
As long as the characters are well-written and likeable, most people going to your movie can and will go along with an "unrealistic" design. Once you fall in love with a character, the way they look doesn't really matter. I mean, the Sonic movie was a perfect example of that. The original "realistic" design was grotesque, so they redesigned it with a much more "cartoony" and unrealistic design that was closer to the source material... and people loved the character, so they went along with it.
I know people try to blame the CGI, but I'm honestly all for CGI and motion-capture for the turtles since it can allow for greater expression and freedom of movement for the actors. But they easily could have gone for a design closer to the original comics, or even the 1990 movie, and I think audiences would have gone right along with it. It wouldn't have saved the movie, but it would have earned them a little more good will.
The mutagen could’ve easily been explained as “turning them into the animal that best fits their personality”
26:15 The point of Lego is that you can adapt your design whenever you want to suit your needs, that's opposite of "Useful in very specific situations", being able to change your weapon accordingly to suit the environment whenever you need is useful in almost every situation you can think of.
It's so funny that I thought you did a review of this movie YEARS ago and this was a re-upload, but watching through it, I'm realizing that this is completely new. I saw this movie in theaters and had such a mixed reaction. It was inching closer to being a good Turtles movie, but it still misses the mark in a big way. Great review, hilarious as always! The in-jokes that you can pull from with the Next Mutation and Bootleg Zones really elevate this one for long-time watchers
Phelan technically did do it already. It was one of those "straight back from seeing it" videos with one of his mates.

The Biggest Idoit in this movie is: *THE SHREDDER*
For immediately teaming up with Kraang on a whelm and betraying Baxter Stockman for no reason despite him being a very reliable asset for the Foot Clan.
Haha, yeah this review needed a "biggest idiot" moment! 🤣
Ninjas : the art of visibility
Wait...
Considering that the 2012 cartoon established that every iteration of the Krang are all part of one species, and that the '87 one is an incompetent exile, I can't help but wonder where the OotS version is in the Krang hierarchy.
Honestly knowing how Megan Fox hated Michael Bay the whole way he treated her in his movies is a lot worse.
Note: I think the shredder from the first movie was supposed to look like how he did in the 2012 version, you can even see the burns on his face.
Yeah I always thought that was the case too. They're both bald as well
From what I know, Nickelodeon was ADAMANT that the REAL (aka Japanese) Shredder be put in the film after it got out that he was turned into an American so more than likely they DID use the image of the Shredder from the show to quickly make the one for the movie. On one hand I'm glad they did this because Eric Sak's...wasn't Shredder at all. He came off as generic bad guy #11111 but I also have a feeling that Nick wanted this so kids wouldn't get confused between watching the movie and watching the show. It is funny the show makes fun of how bad the turtles looked.
My only question to this is why didn't they follow up on this for the sequel. I mean, no disrespect to the guy they got but like Phelan said 'Jail did him well'.
I was an extra on this, and boy, the shooting I was a part of was a very long night.
It maddens me to see Casey Jones be done so dirty.
And apparently Fred Armisen was originally going to be Krang before he got replaced by Brad Garrett... like I'm seriously wondering how that would have gone.
Instead of the foot they should've had the turtles face a bunch of splinter clones led by a guy with a flower on his head.
Bebop and Rocksteady are this movie's saving graces if you ask me. They're still not perfect but I at least kinda enjoyed them. I'm not sure what they were thinking making Casey Jones a cop, and I still can barely stand the Turtle's designs, but (low bar) I liked it more than the 2014 movie.
How the 1990 movie continues to be the best live-action TMNT version (and not even by a little, the margin must be measured in astronomical units) is a testament to how much care and heart that version had.
Same here I wanted to see bebop and rock since secret got the ooze came out I wish they did that back then I was never a fan of tokha and razor
I think it'd be cool to see you do a retrospective on the 2012 interpretation of the turtles because I find it my personal favorite
Stephen Amell could’ve worked as Casey Jones if they kept the character similar to his previous interpretations. He’s proven he can do the vigilante thing well, but this interpretation just made him look whiny.
In the Comics and The 2012 Show He is that way.
Yep😅
To give the movie SOME credit, I think that Mikey and Bumblebee are at the Village Halloween Parade, where that costume makes sense. The skeletons are one of the more recognizable images from that parade.
"Well, it's a jungle out there."
Did you just make a reference to Monk? For those who don't get it, the actor who plays Splinter also played the main character in the TV show Monk.
Yes
@@phelous I was immediately like "Oh my God! Phelan's a "Monk" fan!".

I also enjoyed Out of the Shadows much more than the first. This one was at least not ashamed to be associated with the TMNT brand.
It's still dumb and not nearly as good as the original, but it's at least fun.
I always drop what I'M doing to watch new (PHELOUS) content.
It would have been the perfect movie for me as a kid if had been released in 1989, with Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady, something I hated about the Golden Harvest movie.
But, Shredder not really being in it in costume did suck.
...but: helloo youu!
Incidentally John Hennigan played a way better version of Casey Jones in Batinthesun's Casey Jones vs Kick-Ass video

I want you to get back to watch the golden films because I love when you do those videos. I love your sense of humor.
I was caught off guard by how funny Michelangelo's flight comment was, made even better with the brain dead bit.
I recently watched this movie with my roommates (we also watched the first one, we like to have bad movie nights). I had some previous experience with TMNT (mostly the 03 show as a kid) and one of my other roommates had seen this movie and some of Rise of the TMNT so she was familiar with some of the weirder aspects of the universe (namely Krang). The third one really doesn’t know too much. So when Krang just sort of appears I was like “huh ok we’re doing this” while roommate 3 was like “wait WHAT is happening????”. It shows just how jarring Krang’s introduction is if you have no familiarity and how poor a job they do of explaining it. They definitely did it with nostalgia bait in mind mainly.
Can't wait for the third one where they introduce Leatherhead, Caitlyn, Prof. Honeycutt, Wilbur Weazell, Mona Lisa and of course Lotus
Thank you for this fantastic review, Phelous! Don’t listen to Shredder; there’s no “or not” about it! I’ve never seen the newer Turtles movies (didn’t really want to; I was afraid they’d be awful - wonder where I got that notion??) so these in-depth reviews of yours are both entertaining and informative. I actually managed to catch this video within minutes of getting the notification but I was able to restrain myself from commenting before watching, lol. I’d hate to become one of those “first!” commenters!
Anyway, thank you again for this latest incredible review. It’s always such a treat to see you cover a topic you’re deeply passionate about, and TMNT is one of my favorite subjects on your channel. I’m sure I’ll be watching this at least a few more times because I had kittens crawling all over my phone during a few parts, plus I just like rewatching your videos. They’re always so much fun, and I always catch something I missed during the first watch. Keep up the awesomeness, Phelous! You truly are the best!!! 🖤
I actually didn't mind "gross Krang"
It's how I'd expect an Utrom to look texture wise
Depending on the continuity, their last name should be Hamato after Hamato Yoshi. But then again, these movies don't care about continuity.
I was not expecting the return of the classic "Michaelangelo is Brain Dead” gag, but it was a nice surprise and quite fitting too. I never saw either of these movies myself. The turtle designs and Michael Bay being featured in the marketing for the first movie were enough to turn me off from checking it out. It is strange that they got a different actor for Shredder only for him to not interact with the turtles in this movie and he seemed more like setup for both this movie's plot and some sequel baiting. It's also a shame that the scene with Judith Hoag was cut, if only because the April from the 1990 movie is one of the better takes on the character that I've seen from the different movies and TV series.
Oh…..
It's a good day when Phelous uploads a Turtles video.
It's AMAZING how no Turtles review feels complete without an I Hate Splinter or Michaelangelo Is Braindead anymore ^^'
I love how many Turtles adaptations there are that suggest New York City is a sparsely-populated city that just HAPPENS to have gigantic, mostly abandoned buildings.
You should do that "I'm sorry, that came across as super creepy" gag for anytime Donatello gets a hard-on for April in the TMNT 2012 show, cause it happens A LOT there. Also, wonder if you'll review the 2007 CGI TMNT film?

splinter not doing much is an issue in most versions. I am suprised that splinter being older and in poorer health isn't used. that would be a decenet explantation to why he only does stuff in really serious situations.
One of the things that still upsets me? They throw Baxter in a teleporter, filled with garbage, and flies. An obvious set up for Baxter the Fly.
And when Shredder is going to belittle him, he just calls him a footnote.
You could have called him a fly!
Phelan, your TMNT videos are the best. I'm so excited whenever you do a video!
16:59 Sounds like something a scientist would say...if they had dial up internet in their brain.
"Then things start to get ridiculous."
That's a shame. They were doing so well up until now.
The idea of Casey Jones wanting to be a detective, getting shitcanned and going vigilante, I think that has potential. They could have done something interesting with that. Like, his excessive violence is because he's mad at the system for not letting him get what he wants, so he takes it out on criminals. I'd buy that as an interesting take on the character. You could even make it so that part of what kept him from making detective is his temper and his willingness to just flagrantly ignore procedure, so he had this violent streak he was trying to hold back all along, making him a much more morally gray character who you know you can't fully trust, but the turtles don't have many choices on allies, so they get stuck with him.
The fillmmakers don't seem to be aware that this is what they've stumbled on.
I remember I saw them filming in the driving chase scene that was filmed in Buffalo NY.
To be fair to the writing of Michelangelo, a lot of the "Michelangelo is brain dead" moments seem to coincide with emotional stress - it's like his coping mechanism for conflict in his family or hostility towards them is to become a cloudcuckoolander for a short time.
Stephen Amell actually would have been a great casting choice for Casey if he played the part more like Oliver Queen on *Arrow.* Instead, it's like he's going for Chris O'Donnell in *Batman Forever.*
exactly
This new Ninja Turtles movie could've used Bonesteel, Dragonlord, and Dr. Quease in the cast.

22:54 I love this still frame of Mickey, he really looks brain dead with one eye looking at the computer and one...at the camera, a CGI creature is looking AT THE CAMERA, yup! Creepy.
Thank you for this and all the great content bro
A very entertaining review, it had Bumble Bee, Batman, classic TMNT gags & new ones. Plus a lot of other fun stuff to name. I definitely didn't hate the movie, that said it needed more work. I also loved that Bebop & Rocksteady showed up in a TMNT movie! It had potential & not necessary wasted if explored in other incarnations, but one can only dream.
Honestly, I never was a huge turtles fan, but this looks like it would almost be worth watching for the Bebop and Rocksteady scenes alone.
But it also seems like the wet blankets they hired to play for April O'Neil and Casey Jones do a good job at counter acting any enjoyment one gets from the fun parts of the movie. It's just like the "human character" parts of the Transformer movies and the american Godzilla movies. You know? The ones that every single person who watched these movies hates!
I will give the Bay films this
