having fathered an autistic son this film brought tears to my eyes. I was so used to having a silent child at the back seat that when he first said the name of a petrol station he recognised from the tely I almost stoped driving during rush hour in the middle of busy avenue. Now Nick is speaking fluently and he will be finishing high school next year.

As an autistic myself (verbal, high function) I can see this bone-chilling..... i mean... its so perfect about what the lower end of the spectrum... and the mom is so determined... she is strong... and duke is strong too... We must fight, and let everyone know that We. Matter. TOO! We might be different, but, we’re not dumbfounded or anything like that, we just, need, a chance. We all do. But on all serious note I love how yall did this film. It is very amazing and when i say its bone chilling, it means this film is done right. It is depicted well!!!

I became friend's with a woman who had an adult son, 19 or 20, with severe autism. He was non verbal. She had never heard him speak.
I lived on the beach in Florida at the time. She was renting a home next to me for a summer.
We talked at length about the struggles of raising children, life and the future. Her son came alive when he walked barefoot into the sand. His face lit up, he engaged more, he seemed truly happy and his mother seemed peaceful. Seeing him interact with the world that to us is normal and everyday, was amazing. He was her only child.
This was years ago. This film brought those memories back. I didnt see them again after that summer. I hope they are doing well wherever they are ❤

Am I right in understanding that the "Duke" in this film is an actor? That's unbelievably good acting. This film had me in tears. I look up to people who can do this kind of work. They are the true superhero's of the 21st Century.

As a grandfather of an autistic 6 year old boy I can only hope that one day he will speak to me. I see the impact that one child can have on a family. I pray my daughter and son in-law have the strength to raise this child along with his brothers and sisters. To be honest I have trouble loving this child at times and I feel shame.

I am an Engineer by profession but when I migrated to America in 2002 I worked in a public school in California as an Instructional Assistant to high school students with special needs. We had students like Duke in this movie. With no background in a special education, I learned to enjoy working with them and it did not stop me there when I moved to another state , I found myself working in Vocational center for developmentally disabled adults. These special kids, adults are no different to us although they have different world, they are capable to do things in a certain degree. My experiences with them were enjoyable, fun and memorable. The film speaks volume. The potrayal of the actor as Duke is very realistic. I love this film and it is very special to my heart. " Although we are tired and sometimes exhausted in serving family, people and relatives ,our love and compassion prevail".

I'm now a blubbering idiot. This was so powerful, so on point. The acting was incredible! Can you imagine what it would be like to be fully capable, fully aware, yet be unable to convey it to those around you? Then imagine finding a little opening that allows you to finally begin communicating more clearly with others. The joy of finally being heard..........

Even without neural challenges, psychological and emotional ones can be so weighty as to precipitate 'hiding' behaviors, mimicking the withdrawal of Duke to a lesser or greater extent. I speak from experience. Kindness, patience, and understanding go a long way to aid in functionality. Those of us who know this must never let others taunt or bully.

My biggest wish is that some day my little brother will be able to communicate with our family in some way, either with sing-language, writing, talking, pointing at pictures or even with just facial expressions. I love him so much and I wanna know what he thinks and how he feels. This movie touched me so much because right now we only know when he’s sad, hungry, ill in some way or if he wants/doesn’t want something. But sometimes, not often, but sometimes he smiles and when he does that I feel the biggest joy that I ever could! And I hope he does too. Because my hope is that some day he will be able to tell us what he wants and how he feels. He is 8yo right now and when he was 2-3yo he said my name and sometimes even “mom” and “dad”. And that is why my hope is still up.
He might never walk without help, he might never talk with words and he might never be able to do things that people without disabilities do. But some day I hope I can understand him and maybe even communicate with him.

Profoundly touching and eye opening ,
The script , production, cinématographie and especially acting are absolute first class , emotions like frustration , anger , confusion , love , tenderness , to name a few , was portrayed with such realism that I would have easily believed I was watching a real life documentary .

I am personally aware of and involved with a situation similar to this situation. It is so difficult for all concerned, but my heart goes out to the siblings of the child at issue. They are in such a difficult position.

The brother is an asshole, the sister don't care about him and the father I fed up with him but the mother is caring loving and patient with him and is the only one who understands him... God bless him and everyone whose in a situation like him... God is great, God is kind, God is ❤️ Love and he loves us all equally because he is our father and creator... I have a friend whose son had autism. ...this movie made me appreciate her struggles...GOD TAKE OVER EVERY HOME WITH SUCH STRUGGLE STRENGTHEN AND HEAL THEM AND LET YOUR PEACE REIGN WITHIN AND AROUND THEM IN JESUS NAME AMEN
This film has me in tears...my nephew is in his early 20's now...he's autistic and noncommunicative. My brother and sister in.law are the best parents and have worked with him for so long...now that he has aged out of the school system, it is very hard for them...and with both of them being in their early 50's now, they worry about the time they won't be there to take care of him. My aunt, in the 1940's was deemed "retarded" and spent the rest of her life in a mental institution...thank God that House of horrors no longer exists, but we don't have a good system for these people as they get older. My nephew is over 250 lbs and 6 ft tall...hard to control when he gets frustrated....love your children and be happy that your problems are minuscule compared to these parents.

That was entertaining,emotional,and a good short film! I have high functioning autism and I saw other nonverbal autistics in the past when I was in teen social skills,and I thought it was a film about duke Ellington when I saw the title :( oh well,but being a good short film I can't complain.

I have a problem with this film...it is so moving that it is just too short! It is so beautifully acted by all the cast that it was easy to be involved and I actually wanted to be part of the group.
As for "special needs" I think we all have them and as soon as we learn to integrate with one another we will be far more productive as a species.

I definitely share something with Duke. I love music and I also have a comfort place that I love. He loves the beach, and I love the woods. I've watched this short film a few times now and I relate to when Duke's family are trying to get him to do something, (type) and there's something that makes me nervous to do it. But it also takes me time to finally do it myself.
