    Wow, the film's theme about insecurity is very relatable. We look for evidence to confirm or justify our insecurities and he found a pattern in her past then assigned negative meaning to support his insecurity. He didn't feel like he belonged with her and was insecure but projected his insecurity on her and self sabotaged only to realize his mistake too late. Great film.

      Interesting, I took from it that if you are being fetishized - Does the person really love you or just the thought of you? Are you really an individual to them or just some reaction to combat their upbringing. The girlfriend said as much herself. She didn’t know if her penchant for dating people who didn’t look like her (white) was a reaction to her xenophobic upbringing or not. The ending where she stated that he was also perfect for her showed she truly did love him as an individual and not as a fetishized ideal to prove something to herself by being contrary to her upbringing.

    "I like people who are different from me. Why is that such a crime?" I haven't dated much, but there is so much loaded into this one line that I can relate to. I think it's generally a good idea to sometimes take the time to examine the reasons you're dating someone. Intellectual curiosity about other cultures is not the same as being truly in love with someone, and while obviously both phenomenon can and have occured around the same person, one shouldn't be confused for the other, especially when you'll be basing your entire futures around said relationship. Exploring another should be a perk, not the main attraction.

    There's so much to evaluate in this. And everyone else in the comments addressed insecurity and a possible fetish really well, BUT the issue with how different their families were should have also been a point to consider. If anyone gave me a gun for Christmas, I'd definitely second guess marrying into the family. There was palpable hostility from her father. Who wants to marry into that?

    • @lisadiane55
      @lisadiane55 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +37

      Good point. Even if she's evolved enough to be independent of her family's expectations, those very different relatives by marriage can add a lot of stress to a relationship.

    • @everythingisfine9988
      @everythingisfine9988 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +44

      Getting a gun as a wedding gift, a shotgun is pretty cool. Very expensive and thoughtful. And the father wanted to get to know him better through activities. The Indian wedding dress showed that the daughter and mom aren't in constant communication. Because the parents were unaware of the type of wedding that was going to take place. So even in the worst situation, there'd probably rarely have family get togethers. On the other hand, it seemed like they spent a lot of time at the husband's family's place based on their ease of communication.
      This was a guy who was just uncomfortable with change and anything out of the ordinary. He also is not an effective communicator because he knew so little about his GF and only seem to want to marry her out of obligation

    I’m Chicana, my Mom was from south Texas and born to two Spanish speaking south Texans. Dad was from northern Mexico. I was born in Florida and growing up did not have anyone else around that was like me. All my extended relatives were in Texas. So I grew up with some traditional Mexican customs, and I enjoyed Spanish language music. But my Spanish grew weak as my English grew strong. I ended up marrying a man from Chiapas, the most southern state in Mexico. I never felt like I was the type of woman he should be with. I lived with that insecurity for almost 20 years. I was never close to his family, never got to go visit his parents, never saw where he grew up. Holidays were hard because he was homesick for the cooking and ways of celebrating, I felt especially sensitive at that time. Imagine feeling like a failure every Christmas 😢 Eventually he cheated on me with someone from South America. I wasn’t fully surprised. For my part, I know I probably held a lot of myself back due to lack of self confidence. But, when I discovered the affair, he genuinely wanted me to accept it as a way of life. Him and his family with her, and me & our children. Nope. I was not interested in adopting that “tradition”.

    As an Indian guy! I'd like to bring forth a totally valid point, which is marrying in another culture is not easy and requires some effort on both sides. People who aren't willing to put in extra work to sort out the differences will often face the same fate as shown in the vid. Also divorce after a kid is unthinkable for Indians, so it's easy to see who encouraged it. But still... Being so insensitive to your partner's feelings isn't a good sign. Insecurities isn't something that can't be worked upon. I mean just imagine if they were living in India... The girl would've been totally lost and would regularly face such insecurities for being the odd one out. This is a normal thing for people distant from their own culture, so try and be a bit more supportive.

    I don't think she was fetishising Indian guys, it was more a personal preference.
    For him, his worries and insecurities really overtook having a balanced perspective and inevitably jeopardised his relationship.
    I wonder if he'd had therapy he could've looked at his emotions and thought processes more objectively and the outcome could've been they were still together.
    But I feel empathy for him.
    Haven't a lot of people done this? I have.
    Been so caught up in a perspective which one fully convinces themselves was right, but it's a perspective which is skewed, dominated by a personal narrative which most likely stemmed from fear and a need to self protect.
    Not realising until hindsight, one has made a choice which completely affected the outcome?

      Where it falls off is that he doesn't want to believe that there was more to their relationship than attraction. They were in too deep for details about their meeting to put everything into doubt. If they had just met and he thought they had something serious when she just wanted to fuck an Indian, then yeah, that's racial fetishism. His fiancée wanted to build a life with him, not satiate a fancy.

    A lack of self-worth can ruin oneself/relationship, so does having multiple partners also will do the same. You can't settle with one if you in the past have 10 different partners one will always be on a lookout for another.

    As we saw in the classic Spike Lee joint “Jungle Fever”, racial fetishes are REAL, y’all. The key question here is: “Is the relationship based on love (which is deep) or based on the fetish (which is shallow).”
    A racial fetish feels very different than an interracial relationship that is based on love, admiration, honesty & respect (especially when it involves women of colour👈🏽).
    I will say this was an honest movie🎥 but I didn’t buy that she loved the Caucasian guy at the end (a Black guy would have been a nice addition to the story, just saying🤷🏽‍♀️) But IMO this couple did the right thing by breaking up…I believe she did fetishize him and that would have forever plagued him.❤️‍🩹

    TH-cam recommended this film to me, maybe because I am Indian. Whole Oscar thing made me watch it. I am sure writers and director were trying to point out something, I don't know, I feel it's not communicated well, especially to audience like me. Maybe it's related to cultural things abroad. Anything Indian, loved it ❤

    WOW! WHAT A MOVIE...GREAT PERFORMANCE AND DELIVERY OF TRUEST OF TRUTH, UN-PORTRAYED, EVERYDAY HAPPENING AROUND THE WORLD...LOTS OF RACISM SEEN FROM AN INDIAN PERSPECTIVE...IT WAS WEIRD TO SEE... SOOOO, MUCH TIME WAS WASTED AND FOREVER LOST FROM RACISM; FROM WHOMEVER THE PERSPECTIVE IS FROM !!! AGAIN, WOW!

    But, HEY! What if the fact of him pointing out the "pattern" made her realized she was just acting against her family. Because she said; I do not know why I love you! I mean, a relationship is between two and she could have also supported him more. But, what do I know? I am single at 43 and I had my last boyfriend around 13 years ago, not into girls and right now I am living a lovely love story, but has an ending date when I return to my country 10.000 kms away. So long!

    I met my partner in my country, and he is from a different country, one that I really DISLIKE (it's very religious and backwards), so for that reason, I was apprehensive about dating him. But he is not a country, and he dislikes religion as I do, and we share the same values, interests, and humor, so THIS is why I chose to be with him. I wish I liked his country more, but none of us chose to be from where we are from, as such, wherever we are born and raised and from whatever family in which we are raised does not dictate who we are as individuals, so maybe stop reducing yourselves to a location or family heritage. While these obviously influence our personalities, they are only a PART of forming us as a whole human.
    In fact, if your identity is solely formed by your race or nationality, that's pretty pathetic because it means you are so GENERIC and boring as you share an identical identity with MILLIONS or even BILLIONS of other faceless humans. If you are from India, are you claiming you are generically the same as a BILLION other people?!? Lol. That is the most pathetic and boring thing I've ever heard.

    Brilliant short film. Yes he was insecure but then he cant be blamed for asking these questions. How much do we need to know abut our partners past is a strange one. Many men would be shocked at the number of lovers rather than the racial element. Women often arent expected to have a past
