Save vs. Splurge | Fashion I Save & Splurge On

  • Today I'm sharing the fashion items I like to splurge on and those I like to save on to ensure that my closet is well-rounded and will last me for years to come. Before we hop into though, I want to make it clear that the monetary value behind what makes a splurge or steal is different for everyone and the most important thing is to always stay within your own personal financial restraints and never exceed your budget in the name of fashion. With that in mind, a "splurge" will be anything that requires a larger part of your fashion budget and a save is anything that requires less. Also, when it comes to building a timeless closet full of pieces that you can wear for years to come, I recommend always striving for the highest quality item that you can personally afford, buying natural fibers and materials, and then taking care of those items so that they last as long as possible. Doing this will help ensure that you spend your hard earned money only once and don't need to repurchase the same pair of shoes every year. If, instead of buying impulsively, you take your time to pick the perfect piece for your wardrobe (whether it's a splurge or save), and ensure that that item is well-made and you spend a little more when necessary, you will help reduce how frequently you need to buy things. Also, if you understand the pieces that are worth spending a little more on, you can spot a great deal and score some beautifully made "splurge" items at a steal price. I'm working on an entire series all about this so be on the lookout for that but in the meantime, I hope you enjoy these saves and splurges.
Thank you so much for watching! xx Audrey

    Splurges:
    Blazers/jackets/coats (it's cold in London!)
    Pashmina scarves (as hijab)
    Silk scarves (for formal functions)
    Shoes/boots
    Wool jumpers
Bags (but mostly on sale or eBay)
    Save:
    Maxi skirts
Shirts (but have to be well made)
    Cotton jumpers
Light weight scarves for hotter weather
I don't wear jewellery anymore (except for a few gold items family gift me over the years as is traditional for Pakistani girls!). I used to have a huge collection of costume jewellery that in hindsight were a poor investment. Along with these, I sold all my trend driven clothes, shoes, and bags at boot sale markets and made £300. I put this towards a bike! I wish I had learnt your life lessons before i wasted so much money on clothes that are just for the season. My life is so much better now that I have fewer things that are well made.
Audrey, I'm very much looking forward to the videos you've mentioned!

I like to save by buying gently used designer clothes. Not sure if that’s “cheating” since it’s not a category per say, but designer clothes (as opposed to bags, small leather goods and to a lesser extent shoes) lose their value extremely quickly. Just a few weeks ago I picked up a beautiful timeless burnt red fendi silk top for 12€. Probably helps that I’m not really into visible branding as those pieces tend to be more expensive - I just want the fine material, the fact that they’re usually made in Italy (more humane conditions than most other places), and the overall reduction on carbon footprint by buying second hand.

It also keeps things out of landfills, which has an environmental impact as well. That's not cheating-it's good for your wallet and the planet. That's good consumerism :D

I think in her handbag collection video, she states that she bought many of her pieces off of Ebay... I love looking at what's available on The RealReal, Vestiaire Collective, etc... I don't think it's cheating at all!

Was just going to post this exact thing, but saw that you'd already said it :-). I've found the quality of my wardrobe has actually increased since I stopped doing most of my shopping at high street stores, and instead used ebay and a couple of favourite thrift stores in upmarket neighbourhoods. I end up spending much less, and as you say it's more sustainable. I actually find now that when I go into stores like h+m that I used to use a lot, I'm amazed by how cheaply made most of the clothing looks, compared to things (woolen sweaters esp) that I've picked up for a few pounds secondhand. Often any fit issues can be tweaked with some simple hand-sewing too, if tailoring is too expensive.

Another wonderful video. You were made to be in front of a camera. You are so articulate and present so well. I love to save everywhere, but still look lux, so I am always on EBay and I have two favorite consignment stores in my area. On the capsule wardrobe I usually spend a little more and especially shoes as you, but I am always waiting for the ones I prefer to go on sale or try to get them on Amazon or 6pm. I save on scarves, colored cashmere sweaters, and wool or linen blazers by purchasing them on EBay or at consignment stores.
I have learned so much from you and am probably older than your mother. So, you can teach an old dog new tricks. Thanks so much for all your hard work on trying to educate us😇

Audrey, this was a great tutorial! Reminding & teaching what to look for and what’s important to save & splurge for. My splurges are on shoes...well made with good arch support, and unfortunately not pointy toed or high heeled any more (I’m pushing 75). I’m still on the look out for some good quality purses, I currently have one my husband got me two Christmases ago. I hate to spend big bucks on a purse that’s expensive & has someone else’s name or initials all over it....I would like to find one with subtle class. I also love blazers & have a nice collection of them. Now looking for a well fitting white, long sleeved blouse, the ones I’ve seen at upper end stores are very expensive, but I guess I’ll have to bite the bullet to get one. Find even pricey clothes in the department stores not well made, thrown together, horrid materials & prints. So it’s taking a little longer than I thought it would to put together a classic wardrobe for a retired lady who still wants to look good every day. Thanks for all your input....it helps to know there are other women who still enjoy looking good. All the best!

So true about the shoes, this past year I must have bought about 5 pairs of shoes but ended up chucking all of them after 2/3 months because they were such low quality that they become unwearable after a couple months. I could've saved myself the money and hassle by just buying a good quality pair from the start.

Used to practice foot reflexology and I totally agree about shoes. My 'cheaper' quality shoes rarely are worn. My investment shoes I've worn for 10 yrs and keep repairing. Find a fabulous cobbler who's willing to be creative and make friends :) Handbags 'forever' good quality absolutely. With jewelry, I'd also consider asking for the pieces (or help paying for the pieces) for birthdays, anniversaries, work promotions, other special occasions. That way they are always imbued with positive emotional value that reminds you of loved ones.

For handbags I definitely recommend looking at online stores (the ones that have temporary sales for different brands with massive discounts) and finding a sale for Italian made leather handbags. That's how I got my two leather handbags which were on sale for about ~$70/80 each (and this is Australian dollars) while on other online stores they're selling for over $200 USD. They're definitely high quality and haven't worn out at all due to the thick fabric; I anticipate using them for many years to come. Not to mention they were affordable for someone on a student budget like me.

I love how you put into specific terms for what, to the naked eye is the difference between looking classic and put together, and wearing cheap looking outfits. I believe that sometimes one wishes to have a more sophisticated look, and I've trying with the shapes and colours, and discovered that it isn't enough, and I didn't know why it wasn't working. I realize now it was because the materials and textures were off. And it is going to show, and maybe most importantly, feel on your body. Looking sophisticated is also a matter of feeling good on the outfit you're wearing, and this won't be possible while wearing a plastic/polyester made outfit and fantasy earings that give you and itch. Thank you for helping me understand that.

This is a wonderful video, Audrey! These are concepts my mother taught me WAAAY back in the sixties and seventies and I have taught them to my own daughters, as well (now adults). Can't wait for the capsule jewellery video Audrey! I am holding off sorting my jewellery until I see it! Another thing I like to splurge on is a good quality pair of sunglasses. If I know I spent a little more on them, I take really good care of them. But if they were $10 I find myself being careless and just tossing them into my bag. By spending a lot on a pair of Ray Bans I've had them for over six years.

This particular installment was so needed for me as I'm in Spring Cleaning mode & parting with many of my older ill fitting pieces that aren't worth altering. I've recent lost a significant amount of weight as well & I've been having fun "shopping" in my own closet finding pieces that are classic that I've held on to and incorporate back into my active wardrobe. Classic lines & quality pieces have most definitely aged well. Looking forward to be "blazer" video you mentioned coming soon.

Before I went by the saying "quantity over quality" with shoes, and my reasoning was that I could basically mix and match more, and still not wear them out so soon since I had plenty of shoes overall. However, lately I've really come to appreciate the quality and comfort shoes that are just a little more expensive bring. And while I still have a lot of cheaper shoes left, I'm mostly wearing the more expensive ones anyway, because they just fit better and look nicer. Quality isn't just comfort, it shows outwards too. Also, if you think your purchases through - "what will they go well with?" for example - you'll notice that your quality shoes mix matches really well, still!
    Love your advice Audrey!

These are great tips Audrey, and your videos similar to this helped me go minimalist months ago. One thing I definitely don't splurge on are shoes. I used to wear Geox and Ecco but had to replace the shoes at least twice a year because a) they fall apart as i put them through a lot of wear and tear b) even with inserts and cleaning, I still manage to stink them up. It's much more cost effective for me to purchase cheaper pumps and flats elsewhere knowing they'll be replaced in 6 months. I do miss the quality though - I once wore Geox suede loafers to an impromptu hike and it performed really well, I was surprised by the tread on the soles that helped me keep in my feet instead of down the mountain!

I just came across your channel one or two weeks ago and there are sooo many videos to catch up on, I love it! 😍
Definitely splurge for shoes, always have, since I can get terrible blisters and everything that is not well made I can wear for an hour max. Splurge also for: quality jackets, both for winter and for outdoor activities; fancy jewelery.
Also, I agree with you on saving money when it comes to just plain shirts, especially when I just need something to wear under sweaters. And trendy jewelery!

Lots of great advice. Totally agree on the white t-shirts-- they are simply things that will wear out and get discolored. Also on shoes-- I don't have any designer ones but I always get well-made leather ones that are super-comfy (I have several that are over 10 years old!). And lastly, definitely agree on natural fibers-- much more comfortable and they last. Looking forward to your next video on capsule jewelry!

High fashion is like art, if it wasn’t connected to anything it would just be a painting for example. The good thing about that is that it doesn’t need to be Chanel to be a “proper” handbag. I love your channel!

Audrey, your style is so classic and preppy. I absolutely love ❤️ this video! I like to splurge on watches that look nice with my wedding ring. I tend to save on t-shirts as well...especially white tees because they tend to yellow under the arm due to deodorant. I live in Florida, and the heat and humidity can tend ruin tees very quickly.

I always buy clothing of good quality, though not much of my wardrobe is what I'd call designer clothing. I have a few good leather bags and some very nice costume jewelry that I wear a lot. I splurged (my husband did, anyway!) on some very nice diamond studs for my birthday, and I have to wear earrings with at least 14 karat gold posts, so I tend to have just a few of those type of earrings. I never buy cheap shoes--years ago I owned three pairs of Ferragamos, and I used to resole them over and over. I was a flight attendant, and they were great for walking through the airport. Also Coach shoes and Cole Hahn make shoes that you can just put on the first day and wear all day. The biggest thing for me is buying from stores where I know the clothes will fit my petite frame, and usually buying on sale, if possible. Love those Chanel shoes! Great videos, Audrey. New subscriber!

I finally found a good place to get shoes resoled. Thanks for bringing it up Audrey. Reminded me to bring my favourite boots there soon. :-) I definetly like to get higher quality items on auctions, like Ebay. Good way to get something lasting without paying full price. I don`t mind, if a garment has been worn before. Sometimes you can`t even tell or sometimes the seller hasn`t worn the item at all. :-)

To make a few of my favorite pieces of costume Jewelry last and not tarnish I use good clear nail polish to coat it. If you take your jewelry off daily you shouldn’t have a problem with it rubbing off.

I am right with you on shoes and blazers - tailored shirts too. Decent winter coat. Cheap shoes don't help your feet or back. You can always spot a cheaply made shirt because the button placket and collar are not crisp.

Dear Audrey, I’m a huge fan! I have a tip for you, though. 1) buy a fabulous costume piece (all metal) 2) send it to Artisan Plating, get it plated in gold or other fine metal. Looks great, lasts for decades! I’m allergic to 14K gold, and have to use 18K gold (which I can’t afford). So I get jewelry I love and can wear daily without spending a fortune. 😀

Investing in better quality is definitely a way to save money in the long run. I bought years ago a woollen shawl, a pair of gloves, a few pairs of stockings and a woollen kilt. I'm still wearing them and they show no signs of age. My first kilt was given to me when I was 10 and it lasted 2 decades. I eventually lost it in a move or perhaps a trip, unfortunately.

I agree 100% with the bra tip. I live in Brazil, where for most of the year coats, long sleeves and layers are simply impossible to wear because of the weather. It is very hard to make a summer outfit look chic and put together, and nothing makes a light weight t-shirt look polished like a good quality seemless bra :)

My shoe collection is definitely the most expensive part of my wardrobe. I always dress with 2 to 3 pieces so I like them to really stand out and it's what I get the most compliments on. I also splurge on layering pieces. It's cold 90% of the time where I live so I make sure to have high quality jackets and cardigans since I will be wearing them the most.

Sometimes I’ve found that there are only a few colors I like to wear but I tend to over-buy when it comes to colors. 😂😂 The things I like to splurge on are well fit shirts and good quality scarfs or wraps.

Totally agree on white shirts. I've bought high end (close to $100) and discount (I'm a fan of Hanes, too! From the outlets!) And I just can't see the point of going designer or high end when they all end up slightly dingy or yellow under the arms (no matter how hard I try to combat that) after a season or 2. Especially if I can get 100% cotton ones for $9.99.

For me personally, the only jewelry I use to accessorize my looks is earrings and necklaces. Nearly everything I have in my collection is a statement piece, but they all range from small and dainty to bold but still chic. I'll also share that the only things I've really splurged on over the years is clothing items, but I only have 3 pieces in that category as of right now: a v-neck dress tank, a teal statement shirt with lace on the neck/chest, and a brown leather jacket. Splurging is something I only do on the rare occasion. :)
