    I saw a video of Olivia Palermo's wardrobe and one of the main things I thought was interesting was that she does not separate her clothes by season. She keeps them hung all together year round. She is not afraid of mixing a flowy, gauzy maxi skirt with a fur vest in the middle of winter. She really understands how to mix seasons well! Great video as always.

      I do this too! Love having my summer outdoors hanging there for me to see and appreciate in the depths of winter. Have never liked the idea of hiding clothes away unless it’s a form of “quarantine” before donating items.

    One of the biggest obstacles for me in wardrobe curation and development is that I like so many different styles, and those aesthetics tend to go in and out of favor with me over the course of years. For example, I will have a few months where all I want to wear is what I call “comfy dancer chic”: leggings, tunic/oversized tops, and legwarmers. Then there are times where all I want to wear is what I would call academia-style clothes: high-waisted pleated trousers, button downs, plaids and tweeds, and sweater vests. My style likes can swing so wildly that it seems very difficult for me to maintain a relatively curated closet whilst still covering all of the different aesthetics that I enjoy infusing into my sartorial choices.

      I cycle them in and out of storage like other people cycle seasonal clothing. It helps to speed dressing if only my currently worn stuff is there, and I get the fun of "going shopping" each time I switch stuff out from storage!

      Perhaps you can still have both! Like have dancer chic when you workout, and academia when you go to school and/or work

    Hi Audrey,
    you're living in a moderate climate, however here in the great white north, we have such a variation in temperature that I do put the fall/ winter clothing away during spring/summer. We can have the same color palette all year, but quite a variation in the weight of the materials.
    That being said your tips are always welcome, and I admire your style.

      Hi Sheryl! Gorgeous point! Audrey has helped me think through what fabrics I want to be closest to my skin. A gorgeous soft breathable cotton works great for the summer heat but will also layer beautifully under my wool sweaters. Disclaimer, I’m from
      Minnesota, it cold.

      I live in the midwest where summers are humid and can reach over 100°, and winters can get to -30° for weeks at a time. For me, the difference in the color of the landscape and sunlight between seasons also affects my wardrobe preferences because I tend to dress according to my surroundings. Ginger and burnt oranges in the fall (I love those colors, but they only look right on me in the autumn when the trees are turning and the sunlight is golden); red, royal, and emerald green in the snowy, blue/gray winter; and aqua, pinks, and pale yellow as the sunlight becomes yellower and the flowers come out. As a True Spring, I have a huge range of colors that I can wear, so I take advantage of that, but segment the colors by season. I bought plastic bins to store my off-season clothes to protect them from insects and mice, which we have in abundance since we live only two blocks from woods and farmland.

    Last point! I did a major declutter a few years ago, got rid of a few things, soon after I was looking for them, wondering what happened! Ended up buying almost exact same pieces again as a result. Lessons learned!

  • @anitaclemens2609
    @anitaclemens2609 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    So true about being overly aggressive about getting rid of things. A year ago when all the sweaters were a bit longer, I got rid of sweaters that were a bit shorter, or really normal length. Good sweaters that were nearly new. I donated them. Now this year with all the high waist-ed slacks and shorter sweaters, I think about what I donated and could just kill myself. I should have just put them aside for the time being. Live and learn. Your dog is just the cutest. He looks so cozy in that blanket. Thank you, Audrey for all your fashion wisdom.

      Letting go of clothing that you no longer wear and enjoy can be a trail. I too have placed clothing in a box, to be left in a closet for several months. If I remember one or two of the pieces that may work for me, I can still retrieve it. But the fact that most of the clothes are out of sight for awhile, give me time to realize that whose pieces no longer work for me at this time.

    • @dianawest3976
      @dianawest3976 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, Mariana, When I do collect a pile of clothes I no longer want, I think it will take awhile to donate because of the COVID situation now. I have sometimes put bags of things in the “dumpsters” around town, (even though some of my things are so nice quality ) but around here you can’t do that now...or I prefer to donate to a thrift shop, or Salvation Army, or Lupus, but I wonder if they are making pickups right now. ☺️

  • @aifulin8581
    @aifulin8581 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I really agree with that last point, if you're not sure about some clothing, just put them away from your sight, later you might return back to them. I put a skirt away many years ago, because I was only 20 when I got it, I felt like it's too "oldish", but I didn't have the heart to throw it entirely away. Now I'm almost 26, and I'm going though personal style change, and I've recently seen an inspiration with a similar skirt that I have. I'm so happy I still have that piece, now I'm mature enough to incorporate it into my new, "adult" style. Same happened to a blouse, I got it something like 5 years ago, but I never knew how to style it. I've just found it in one of my boxes, my mum sewed new buttons on it and I love it now!
    I still have some clothes in the depths of my wardrobe, waiting for finding me at the right time :)

      Barb B., wear what you like just for yourself. I have a few high end designer scarves and I don't go out. A friend of mine was shocked that I wear them at home. Why not? I love them.

    • @sharonr5848
      @sharonr5848 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I don't know if this helps, but you might consider three things: 1. if you're not wearing certain clothes, someone else might really need them. Maybe the thought that you've helped someone might make it easier to let go of things. 2. How do the clothes you wear daily for your life now make you feel? You deserve to feel good every day even if you're not going out as often. The clothes might be different from your old, favorite clothes, but they should still make you feel pretty. 3. Maybe try Audrey's suggestion of putting the clothes you don't wear anymore in a box. See how you like looking at a closet or drawers with just the things that suit you now. You might be surprised how good that feels.

    Your dog looks sooo sweet and adorable. Yes, I have made that mistake of throwing out items and then realized I still wanted them. I agree with your tip about being true to yourself. I really adore the preppy look but on me it just doesn't look right and I feel uncomfortable. All the advice says to build your wardrobe with basic and timeless pieces. Such as a white button-down shirt, blue jeans, black blazer, trench coat. Go for classics, however, I don't like how these clothes look on me and make me feel stiff and uncomfortable. Great tips.

    If I had a large enough closet in my bedroom, I would definitely not haul out of season items to another closet down the hall. I make do with a small closet that I share with my husband. Actually, we both have a few locations for clothes through our the house. Everyday outer wear in the entry hall closet, walking and gardening clothes by basement door, dressier coats in closet with the out of season clothes, and hoodies, hats, and polar tecs in laundry room on hooks.

    Surprised at how helpful this was! Thanks for focusing on what we already have and advising a measured approach to tossing clothes. These are 2 of my major beefs with many minimalist channels! I see so many minimalism videos that make you feel like you need to buy a bunch of stuff! Lol! And I have definitely donated pieces only to regret it later on. Especially since I am an upcycler, who loves to create new designs from old items.
    It is refreshing to hear a creator address very real economic issues many of us have. Thanks again!

    I've worked hard while I had the money to cultivate my wardrobe and at the same time learn more about my personal style preferences. It takes a long time, or at least it did for me. I'm trying to get it pulled together in a way where I don't have a lot of off season things to put away, except for coats and a heavy sweater or two. This way I feel like I'm wearing more of my wardrobe all the time. I love linen shirts in the summer, but really they can be worn year round with a base layer. And kimonos look beautiful over sweaters, etc...

    Great advice Audrey! Especially as it regards being too aggressive when curating. I do the tote thing, into storage. My biggest challenge is having changed dress sizes more than once in my lifetime I’ve regretted some tosses. An 80’s Ports kilt and jacket come to mind. They’d fit me today. AARGH! Anywho, I’ve seen you evolve and really love the breath of fresh air. So many other TH-camrs are stuck in capsules or over indulging and encouraging us to participate too. I’ve naturally found myself also leaving all of my clothes in the closet and not partitioning them off for seasons any longer. I do believe that once you’ve figured out how you like to wear things and what silhouettes work for you, having all of your clothes in one closet isn’t overwhelming anymore. I think that’s because you have curbed the desire to spend or overlook what you own amid the clutter. Capsules teach you how to use and LOVE what you own. I’m never bored wearing the same black cami because finding a cami with the right V-Neck, lace pattern and fabric just took so much effort! Keep up the great work!

    This was great. I am curious about the storage cube that you zipped up. Where can we get that ? My biggest problem is procrastination because I have also thrown too many things away that I now think was a mistake , so I like the idea of neatly storing things away in pretty containers . Hence, my question...
    just one , more note . Every time I watch one of your videos, I get so relaxed . Thank you for all of your tips .

    I enjoy your channel and have watched it w my 8 year old granddaughter who is smitten with all things fashion and style! That said, I still struggle matching my style to my purchases. I’ve been retired 6 years and hv moved most of the work attire out of the wardrobe with a few quality exceptions (blazers, nice shoes and plenty of fine jewelry-inherited and gifted from my husband.)
    My style lends toward a casual/outdoor/sophisticate if that makes sense. I don’t think I shop the right places, but am getting better results w Talbots and The Gap. I don’t know what my budget is, but I can spend a hundred at a time. How do I focus my purchases to match my style? I go to the gym, to Happy Hour w friends, camping, my children’s homes, dinners, walking and touring. I go shopping, but try on line first when I need something. Suggestions?

    I did the KonMari method just over a year ago. The major game changer in that was purchasing thin velvet hangers with hooks on them so I can stack the clothes. One item per hanger. I also bought some skirt and pant hangers with hooks so I can do the same. When I look in my wardrobe I feel joy, joy, joy!! I also put my shoes in clear plastic containers. The uniformity of the equipment is revolutionary!!
    I have always packed away out of season clothes so I only have the relevant season in my wardrobe. I find it more relaxing when I only have what I need.

    Main problem: finding styles and fabrics I love that actually suit the lifestyle I have and a preference for practicality (especially with quarantining - I prefer to dress up, but being at home, particularly with a long-haired cat who likes to cuddle, makes this impractical). I’ve made some progress finding dressier pieces that are pet friendly, can withstand more wear-and-tear, and are comfortable, but that can be difficult - and I have trouble parting with pieces I already own and love, but don’t have enough occasion to wear. I’d appreciate any advice you could give! Thanks for you terrific videos!

      My grandmother’s house was built around 1905, and it didn’t have a true fireplace, but rather, an alcove for a radiant gas furnace. They had a mantelpiece, but no chimney as such since it was a natural gas furnace. Audrey’s May or may not be the same.

    I discovered your channel during this pandemic I really enjoy your previous video. I'm a "classic" lady and take pride in wearing the basics ....and classic timeless pieces My camel cashmere coat is now over 33 years old and is just like new. My Ferragamo shoes are vintage now. I wear a signet ring which I have worn since high school. Thank you. I enjoy your approach, your channel, and your voice.

    thanks very much for another useful and to the point video :) always enjoying these.. the part about having a year-round closet is especially applicable to me - i live in Melbourne (Australia) and the weather is literally the most unpredictable thing about this city. Most people living here have to able to change between 4 seasons within a day at times - which means i cannot put away a lot of the traditionally "seasonal" clothes. this on the other hand creates an opportunity to mix and match and layer pieces in a larger variety of ways and keep things creative
