  • Welcome back to the Hideaway Homestead! In this week's episode Mike does a time lapse of a chicken nesting box build for the laying hens. Including some nice features such as a hinged door for easy access to the eggs and privacy dividers.

Thanks for the video. I'm trying to decide if the top lid or front swing down panel is best, as I've seen it done both ways.
How is your working out? as I see it, the fixed top is easier better to waterproof and won't slam down on you.
The side panel makes it easier to clean it out. Is there a downside to the side panel openings?

We have liked the design currently although a lid top might be easier to prevent any hens from hopping out (we have not had that issue yet though). I think you nailed it on some of the pros and cons there.

Nesting boxes at coop floor level. Not a good design. Nesting boxes should be place up off the coop floor, high enough that chickens on the floor level cannot easily put their heads into the boxes and start pecking at eggs. Nesting boxes at floor level are just asking for issues with broken eggs and initiating cannibalism.

Thanks for the feedback. The nesting boxes have actually worked perfectly fine at this level for us and we have not experienced the issues you noted. Our experience thus far.

Hi there, I have a similar coop design as yours being off ground with run area underneath. I too built the nestingboxes at floor level and we're nearing time for the hens to start laying eggs. Curious since you have had your for a while now have you had any issues with the boxes being at floor level. I know you answered the person who mentioned this was a bad design but it was four months ago, would like to know your experience since then. Thank you. @@HideawayHomesteadLLC
