Thank you for the step by step instructions, the best I have seen on youtube
What a wonderful instructional video. Since you gave the measurements, I don’t even need written plans!
Epic! Thanks for the demonstration.
Epic!! Was trying to figure this out a couple years ago right about the time all the fancy high priced ones hit the market! Thank you!!!!
Really cool, thanks for walking us through the build.
New video coming out soon with a backward roll away feature. No more going inside the coop to grab eggs. Keep a look out
Epic! This was super awesome, man. Thank you!! We were going to pull the trigger on some Hen Gear boxes, but I’d rather do the sweat equity option. Thank you for taking the time to show the process!
May1/24 Excellent video tutorial. Easy to follow and enjoyable to watch. I'll be building this nesting box next. Cheers!
Thank you for your video. I was able to make my roll away nesting box. I am so happy with it.
Great job!
Thank you so much for the plans, can't wait to try it on our own this spring
You are so welcome!
I like how you think and work ❤.
God bless you.
Thank you for watching
THANKYOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO AND SHARING INFO! ❤🐓
Our pleasure!
Epic! Nice design! I have none of those tools and this is way above my skill level but am looking for someone to build me one for my future chickens.
Looks good I’m going to make a version of this
I'm in Western Canada and still doing research - with only a few due to arrive mid May. So I've got a brooder in process and a while yet to build a coop; I sure like this idea for the roll-away design and until a while ago - I didn't even know such a thing existed. So - I've got a lot to learn!
Im working now on an update video for a rear collection box, so you can Mount the boxes on the wall and not have a need to go inside your coop
@@hatleyhomestead Yes, I agree. And I want the nesting boxes inside - easier to heat in the winter (if I decide to add light in there). I'll plan the coop size to accommodate that.
I see 99% of nesting boxes with TOP opening lids. I am not going to do that - I hope to have mine open at the rear because their predators come mostly from above so they are programmed to freak when startled from above. Now that I'm planning on integrating this type of collection box as well. I look forward to your video on it.
Epic! Love this
Looks good.
You've got a new sub. We just got our first chickens. This roll away is exactly what I want to do. Thanks.
Nice work. “Epic”. God bless
Thanks Rob! God bless!
Nice build with good explanations!
I’m Glad you enjoyed it
Not sure why this didn't pull up in search 5 days ago. I might just start my nesting boxes all over. Thanks!
Epic bro this was awesome I enjoyed watching this from start to finish absolutely love the idea with the 45° angle cut to hang it that was genius lol thanks for this videos
Thanks for watching!
Epic. Thank you for sharing your project.
My pleasure!
I like the design. I've been looking for directions for this. I'm building one this weekend.
Glad I could help
Epic. Ill be building for sure
Thanks for watching!
It’s 7:20 pm eastern time in Canada
I just made mine yesterday only did the roll out backwards so I don’t go into the chicken pen and disturb the chickens . But glad to see that what I did is as you have done . Iam just a amature
That’s awesome Rayma, you are not an amateur anymore. Now you’re a Professional Homeowner/ Homesteader. We are all just doing what we can with what we have. Keep up the great work, you should post a picture!
I have to make more nest boxes because of that darn chicken math. And I have two sheets of plywood and this is the most BRILLIANT basic plan, I need a roll away system as I'm tired of cracked and poopy eggs. Thank you so much!
You can do it!
@@hatleyhomestead and I did! With some modifications, the paint is literally drying as I type this and it needs to be installed and some other things (like fancy schmancy curtains) added. Thanks again for this video!!!
And yes you can make fun of me for how long this took, I'm a farmer rancher in NoDak that operates on over 4k acres, there are things that take a bit more priority to building a nest box the moment I'm inspired to do so. 😜
Called a French cleat my friend. Very nice nesting box.
Epic!
Great video, it’s nice to see young people living their dreams. The wife & I are stuck in the 9 to 5 world with 5 more years to retirement, but when we do, we plan on homesteading…we can’t wait
Working third shift, I know the pains and lack of sleep it takes to make a dream happen. Keep looking toward your goal and it will happen! If you need any help reach out to us on Facebook
Why wait three years I don't understand?
Love the design! I’ve been planning on building some, but like you said there are very few videos that want to share plans or tutorials, and they usually dont try to make it seem accessible. Preciate you keeping it simple and being thorough during the build.
Epic! Thank you😊
Thank you too!
Im guna guve this build a go! Epic!
Please let me know how it turns out!
Great vid
How well does it work now its complete would love to see it with collected eggs. What are you using as the box bedding that lets it roll to the back. In process of making a larger coop and might have to scrap the boxes i installed yesterday to thia design. Thanks again
Nice job,thanks
Epic design brother, well done
Thank you sir!
Very nice!
Thanks for the visit
30:12 It's called a french cleat.
As others have said.
YUP, I knew I would find a comment stating the name of the cleat if i read enough of them.
Epic 💪🏼
Nice work!!!
Thanks for the visit
Epic! Youre freakin awesome! 😂 Really, this is a great video. Im going to go with your design in my coop. Will add a steeper slanted top to keep chickens from sitting on top and making a mess, but other than that the design will work perfectly for me. Thanks!
Thank you for watching!
Epic!!!
Thank you!
EPIC!!!!
Thank You for sharing your idea. i may be borrowing your idea.
Go for it!
Great job. Btw, epic!
Thank you! Cheers!
Good work man. That’s a nice job. Unfortunately I have thousands of dollars of tools but mine is gonna be the same quality as yours in about the same time just different methods. 👍
Good luck!
Epic!!
Thanks Pam!
My husband is doing the same basic plan you used with the exception of putting a slanted "roof" so they can't roost on top of it and he is making the holes for them to enter where you have the back wall so i can mount it to my wall and the eggs roll out back into the storage room of my chicken house . We will be building a much longer set of these when i get my new babies in May. 150 of them ! yikes. lol Yours looks great . I look forward to following for more ideas.
Thank you for enjoying the content! I’m actually going to make an update video of the upgrades I made to this basic design. Check out some of our shorts to see a sneak peak.
@@hatleyhomesteadTrying to find the update video. :)
@@mulletpunk5 me too
Epic indeed! Now all i have to do is to go back to the beginning of the vid and list down the dimensions.
Epic. Because I’m freakin’ awesome.
Great build. We need to get your community around you wearing more PPE! Use that push stick near the blade, not the fence! Grab a respirator and hearing protection so you can continue to make fun videos! Thank you.
PPE is of great importance.
Thank you 🙏🏼
Thanks for the dimensions.
Thanks for this! I really like that you put the safety zone at the front instead of the back of the nest boxes. I hadn’t even thought of that
Glad it was helpful!
Epic
Thanks for the great step by step build video. I can't use your plan, but it gave me enough ideas to step out on my own.
That’s awesome Dani! Thanks for watching. Post pictures so we can see the end result! And be sure to tag us in it so we see it.
Epic.....
Good job
Thanks
I did it with a skill saw, hand back saw and a drill...thanks for the intro to the circular saw guide! how awesome...I must have that.
EPIC
thank you
Epic build!
Epic! I went to TH-cam to specifically find roll away nesting box plans. Thank you
Nice job on the nesting box. The hen will be laying the egg in a box without any bedding?
Will there need to be some padding added to the end of the rollout shelf to prevent eggs from cracking?
We ended up adding the faux grass plastic squares inside to entice them more, and the angle is not so aggressive. We haven’t had any eggs crack yet. We are getting 28/day on average
Do you have a print out of the plans? My husband is an agri teacher and this looks like a great project for his class!
Not yet! But if there is interest I’ll make one!
Thank You for taking the time to create and share this wonderful tutorial with us all. Easy-peasy! and the end result looks amazing!
Thank you for watching and engaging!
What do you use for nesting material in these boxes? I use pine shavings but im guessing thatll interfere with rolling
Fake grass mats off amazon
How are the eggs on the wood in the roll away? I have been afraid of them cracking. Was thinking of putting down rubber matting.
You can pad it if you wish. I used a sliver of old carpet
What degree was your slope to get a soft roll? I saw that you had some wedges in bottom rear of the box.
Only a 2-12 pitch. Nothing crazy- we just want the eggs to go downhill
How much lean do have from the back of the box to the front where the eggs collect? You didn't give that dimension. I saw another guy building one and I think he had a 3" drop from the back to the front but I like the overall design of your box. It looks like it is around 2". Thanks for the great ideas and I will follow your projects.
I did a 2” drop and it works perfect
doing the 2x4 like that on the back is called a French cleat.
I think most have already commented on some suggestions for improvement and i can't find your update. Slant the roof so hens don't roost & poo on it. The room dividers could have had slant cut out then your bottom ciuld be one solid board to be more structural. Good first try!
Thanks for watching!
Hey brother if I could ask you what size screws are you using to attach the side , back and middle panels that separate each nesting box please? Thank you.
Once I get my computer back up and going I’ll make a set of plans with everything you need, but in the meantime- I used 1/2 in plywood to make the box and all the screws were 1 inch deck screws since they are weather resistant, a few spots I had to use 1-1/2, but not much
@@hatleyhomestead thank you for the quick response and I look forward to the plans, brother. God bless
Epic. Hey- did you show how to put in the bottom of it?
Unfortunately I forgot to edit that in, but it’s very simple, just cut a 1/4 in thick(or whatever scrap piece of plywood you have to fit the hole, and measure 2 inches up on one side and flush on the other. This will give you your slope. I just used wood glue to make it stay in place since the fit was tight. Wood glue works very well and if you want- throw some 1 in screws in for insurance
How did you do all the stuff you ff through with the bottom board
All I did was pocket hole in the bottom board with 2 in shims so that the eggs roll down
This is a great build!! How many total hens do you have?
We have 30 now, I’m building 2new coops soon so be on the lookout.
I love the build but what degree did you have the angle
It was 2 in over the length of the base. I found that’s enough to get the eggs to go downhill without breaking them once they hit the back wall
epic!! so do the chickens like jump up onto there and go inside to lay eggs? obviously i have no idea lol
It took my hens 3 days to get completely use to it but now they are all using it and it keep the eggs very clean.
@@hatleyhomestead how high would you say you hung yours up at? Do they fly up there or something? Did you have to like ..lead them there with food or was it just natural after you added the faux grass
We hung the box about 30 inches high- (I just eyeballed it) but yes, they have no issues accessing it. They just jump onto the shelf and go right in. I did tape an egg onto the nesting pad to entice them a bit more, but they are so curious and willing to lay in a safe spot- that’s all the work we did.
Sorry, but was it mentioned or did I miss it, what thickness of plywood did you use. You mentioned 4 x 8 a couple of times but i never heard how thick. Thanks for the great idea.
This was just 1/2 in plywood
Thanks so much
epic
Would love a link to that Craig attachment please.
I went ahead and added one in the description for you! Thanks for reaching out!
You did such a good job explaining the build except for the floor pieces. You didn’t say anything about the angle, or why you did that as separate floor pieces instead of cutting the angle and doing it as one sheet. I feel like that’s the most crucial part of this whole build. How did you measure the angle for that slant? How long are those pieces? How did you secure it? Why are there little triangles on the bottom?
I personally would have the hen entrance on the back. The chickens are going to poo all over the egg shelf.
Why then individual bottoms?
Who is that handsome man? 🥵😘
Ur hubby is very handsome!
It would be nice to have written directions too.
Any response to this? It would help a lot in the workshop.
Use common sense and just follow along with the video

Not a dig here. I am no shop teacher. But see room for some improvement for power saw safety. Ex. Table saw use first cuts. think the push stick need to be in left hand that is closer to the blade. Not in right hand that is farther from the blade. With circular saw try putting long boards over saw horses and a few stringers at 90 degrees to those to hold work up above support boards. Better done than not done at all. Just be safe. I like the saw jig.
Why didn’t you just cut the 19 inch sections smaller with your keg instead of making extra cuts with the table saw?
I dont know
A slightly modification on your design;
Eliminate the "Tongue on your side and dividers.
Have one common area for collection.
Plenty strong, but If you're worried about strength or warpage, throw a 1x2 under the back edge.
An adjusted layout on the plywood will give you'
A Solid Back, Top, and Floor.
Ends and divider can "share" a single floor cut to obtain the slant.
The "tongue" on the end walls (only) is made from a piece of 3" wide x the floor length of "scrap" plywood.
Attached to the Inside wall.
The resulting layout will give you less wastage, and an equally strong design.
And still use 1 sheet of plywood (or less)
A quick swap in pieces, and widths will give you a "Rear Collection" Nest Box.
I have actually made this modification. If you look at some of our shorts, I had to make this design a rear collection box so it would work on our mobile coop. It works great and all I had to do was take the rear face off and make a 2-by face frame. It works awesome! I should probably make a dedicated video.
Good points.
The entire thing needs a total redesign. Best plans need to be repeatable, easy to follow, least amount of waste, fewest cuts, and be easy to assemble. This "best" must be sarcastic.
You are close to it being better but eliminate the "tongues" completely. Build the bays separately and make the rollout and catch tray separate. With one sheet of plywood you can make 2 4ft boxes.
It's called a French cleat
Sure is, thanks for watching!
This sure seems like EXACTLY what we NEED!! I am tired of trying to weed out the chicken/s who are eating the eggs!
So can you please give us an update on how it is working? I wonder about bedding in the box?? Don't you use some? If so then won't it hinder the egg to roll away? What does keeps the eggs from breaking when they roll away?? I feel like I need more info before we build this. Thank you!
This is a lot of wasted wood and too much cutting. Title is far beyond exaggeration.
Completely lost me on the bottom. Where did you get the wedges? Why are you marking a center for each section? When did you cut out the bottoms? The whole floor thing not clear.
I'm thinking, when installing the back flat to a wall, the bottom which is already sloped forward, will make an egg roll in that direction
I heard that rooster lay an egg
That is called a French cleat
Your hangers Are called a French cleat
Thanks Rickey!
I'm planning on building one for my hens but I'll make the egg hatch in the back so it can be mounted outside of the house
Comments about wife are not appreciated
poor design. So your chickens poop all over the egg catch lid.
I have a video coming out soon with updates to the design. Thanks for you comment.
@@hatleyhomestead Good plan. I am no carpenter and did all my cutting with a circular saw and the attachment. Works great but I would suggest extending the 6 inch safe egg area to 8 or 10 inches. I have had a few times that eggs will stack 2 deep and a hen will still reach under and eat one. Got my lumber today to build another one for my other coup. Thank you.
