Orangutan Dad Steps Up After His Mate's Death

  • You are witnessing the unusual bond between a 3-year-old Sumatran Orangutan (Cerah) and her father, Berani at ‪@DenverZooDZTV‬ .
After Cerah’s mom and Berani’s mate Nias passed away suddenly from fatal heartcomplications, Berani stepped in as the most doting parent.
In the wild, male orangutans are not known to be involved in the raising of offspring at all.
Berani has always been an exception to the typical role of a male orangutan.
Well before Nias' (the mother) death, Berani was known for treating Hesty, Nias' first daughter, like his own offspring.
Hesty is not Berani's biological daughter, but he always treated her as such.
So it's no surprise now that he's stepped in to take care of Cerah.
Since Nias’ December death, Berani continues to be a source of comfort for Cerah.
The whole troop is doing well, and 11-year-old Hesty, who is only a few years away from being able to start having her own children, is doing a good job playing with Cerah throughout the day.

Stop using palm oil containing products. Do your diligence and check that it isn't used in any of the products you buy. There are plenty of soaps, shampoos etc that don't use palm oil. And I haven't been able to find any biscuits/cookies that don't contain it, so I make my own. But I would still urge you to research companies (as I have) to check their credentials. And if you're still not sure then make your own - knowledge is power. There is no better way to cut off a supply than to stop using anything that contains those particular ingredients. And if we no longer use products that contain palm oil etc, then it will no longer be a profitable commodity to those governments who would exploit the planet for the profits they bring. But it has to be a COLLECTIVE effort - meaning enough people discontinuing the use of products that damage the planet to have a profound and lasting effect, otherwise it won't work.

I won't contribute to the downfall of another fellow species just because I want to wear make-up and eat a biscuit. @Trace Smith, I agree with what you're saying about human's viewpoint toward animals. In this case, I don't think that's what's going on. Yes, Silverback Gorillas are known to be very attentive to their young.Gorillas live in large groups, with one dad in the wild. Orangutans on the other hand, yes, also very intelligent. In the wild they grow up male and female both, living individually. Coming together to mate and the male leaving the raising of baby orangutan to the mother. Because they live in the trees and spread out so they have enough food for each in the canopy. With all respect to you and the Orangutans, it is very unusual for the male to be taking care of his baby, even moreso, with one not his own.

The fact that male Orangutans don't help raise their kids at all in the wild but still instinctively being good fathers is such a nice thing

When humanity leaves earth, i hope its the Orangutan and SnubNoses to become the next Apex.
They have that inborn kindness that only a few humans have.

I love this story so much. He is absolutely stunning! Look at his wonderful face. His heart is even more stunning. : - ) What a great daddy! I don't know if this is the same daddy and baby, but I heard about another orangutan male who took over caring for a baby after her mother died, and of course the baby still needed milk and couldn't get it from the male. So the keepers would feed the baby through a fence and then she could return immediately to her daddy. It worked out perfectly, given the circumstances. This might be the same pair, just different video.

I wonder if it is?? I’d worry sick the Dad wouldn’t allow anyone near baby. Make monkeys would only keep the baby to get food for themselves. This is amazing.
