  • Not that you needed reminding, but Cerah and Berani continue being the CUTEST duo. #ICYMI after Cerah’s mom and Berani’s mate Nias passed away suddenly from fatal heart complications, Berani stepped in as the most doting parent. As orangutan males are in no way involved with their young in the wild, this incredible bond has been something truly special to witness.

    I’ve seen many videos where the father has picked up a child that was not being cared for by its mother. This shows added intelligence on the part of the father as well as compassion for the baby. if she was younger, she may not have survived, but the older ones will definitely learn a lot from their father and be able to survive on fruits, leaves, and vegetables. This is not that unusual.

    How sweet! Wonderful how animals can be the bright spot in a world that’s too often dark. 💖💖💖

      @Shafique xoxo Males in the wild do not stick around after mating . That was literally the explanation given from the zoo keepers for THIS orangutan .

    • @Cara-39
      @Cara-39 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @Shafique xoxo Male orangutans are solitary and leave after mating, usually mating with multiple females at a time. It's virtually unprecedented to see an adult dominant male (the cheek pads mean he's fully grown and dominant) interacting with their young, or any babies. That's why this is so amazing

    This is actually amazing. Because in the wild these animals live alone and the fathers have nothing to do with there young. Being raised exclusively by the mothers.

    Amazing. Just wondering, Is she still trying to suckle from him? I see he pushed her away but in a soft manner. Is she given bottled bottle?

    • @DenverZooConservationAlliance
      @DenverZooConservationAlliance  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      She gets a bottle from keepers, but she likes to "comfort nurse" on his fingers and air sac. The fingers he's okay with, the air sac -- not so much anymore, but he's pretty patient!

      Close! Berani is Cerah's biological father. You may be thinking of Cerah's older sister Hesty, the other member of this family unit, whose mother was Nias but had a different father.

      @@Seylew We have two Sumatran orangutan family units made up of five individuals. The first unit is made up of 28-year-old dad Berani, 3-year-old baby Cerah and her half-sister 11-year-old Hesty. The other unit is made up of 14-year-old Eirina and her mate 14-year-old Jaya.

    How sweet...does a male produce milk too?

    • @forestghost7
      @forestghost7 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      nooo lol ... I'm not aware of any milk producing males. you know of any?

    • @bajscast
      @bajscast หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@forestghost7 Actually, males of most mammal species are capable of lactating, given the right circumstances. Medical disruptions involving prolactin, the hormone necessary to produce milk, have resulted in spontaneous lactation. Thorazine, a popular antipsychotic used in the mid-20th century, impacted the pituitary gland-the pea-size endocrine gland located near the base of the brain-often causing it to overproduce prolactin. If prolactin levels remained high, milk could follow.
