    we just did this to our home, basically exactly as you described. mixed the concrete by hand with my 90yr old father in law. turned out perfect. (he's a retired mason, so that helped). great vid.

    Greg, do you have a video similar to this one that offers insight into an addition to a home that has a basement and whether or not the new room addition should also be a basement or if crawlspace will work? Thanks.

    Sir, building a 14x20 sunroom addition to the back of my house where my deck was. We’re using cinder block on top of our footer to match our existing house. We also plan to use 2x6 joists for our subfloor. To match the existing floor height it will only require 1 course of cinder block. Do you see any issues with just using I course of block? Are there any special considerations I need to be aware of?

    Very informative, thank you. I just saw an older video, "How exterior wall stucco can absorb moisture from soil..." & am wondering...I am redoing a planter in front of my house & the soil is against the exterior wall stucco. What should I add to the wall to protect it from water in the soil? A couple of inches of concrete? Or two coats of Liquid Rubber (waterproof foundation sealant)? I would so appreciate your help, thank you!

    what if the original foundation/crawlspace-wall is brick? would this effect effect the method of connecting the two foundations together.
    seems to me that doweling into brick wall would not be as effective to shifting and moving🤔

    Hi
    Thanks for your video
    I have 10inchd concrete blocks I need to put 2x8 on top with anker bolts nut there is one inch gap between blocks and 2x8 to level to the house can I use shems every 3 feet??

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as the shims are supporting all loads transferring down, then yes, other wise try to install shims closer together. If you're not sure about load transfers, then maybe 6 inches on center shim spacing will work better.

    Thank you for this video. So how can we minimize the risk of new addition foundation settling?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The best way is to build it on top of undisturbed soil and firm enough to support home addition. You can contact an engineer also to find out what footing sizes will be required in your area.

    I'm doing a bathroom addition on the back of my home just like your video. My new footers will be 12"x18" per code. My plans are approved, but my dilemma is that as I have dug the new footers I'm discovering that my existing footers don't go down that far, maybe 6"-8" deep. What would be some guidance you could provide in tying in the two foundations? Thanks in advance.

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could have the new footings go under the old or remove and replace old footings with deeper ones. If the old footings are doing there job and no sagging or sinking is happening, then I don't see why they would need to be replaced or modified.

    We're building something similar with a contractor, do you recommend installing a vapor barrier/ gravel in the crawl space?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would depend on the moisture in your air and ground. I would ask your local building department or contractors to see what they suggest. I've never seen gravel installed, but if you find out why it's used, let me know.

      What kind of insulation would you recommend under the rafters & above the crawl space ? I just recently moved to Colorado & it’s very dry air & plan on using ICF forms for the addition & foundation for addition insulation purposes . Thx great video & info .
      Do you also have any videos on the type of roof to tie into the existing structure ? ?

    Hello - we appreciate all your videos, thank you, thank you for your dedication to the community.
    I was hoping you might complete a video, regarding raising a over hang with a room above. We have a colonial Dutch home, that has two bedrooms on each side over the porch.
    The problem is that each bedroom has a bump/hump along the wood floor area where the room separates from the house over the porch. We made attempts to raise the over hang, unfortunately this issue remains.

    What do you call it when you have the same construction. But pour an insulated slab on the inside. Is it a short cellar or a enclosed crawl space?

    I am currently trying to pour a foundation under a add on at the rear of a house I just bought. 2/3 of the house is basement and the other 1/3 is crawspace. The problem is this house is 100 years old and they didn’t use concrete footers. The exterior wall is only brick and the brick has sunk 2 inches down in red clay! The stem walls that are brick as well are falling apart. So I’m trying to figure out how to jack up the brick with no concrete foundation to keep it in place without destroying it and pour a footer under it and then block up to the sill board. By the way the sill board is only a true 2x4 that’s rotten and needing replaced and there’s no fascial board either. I need some serious help and your videos are the only thing on here that comes close to helping! This is only for the crawspace area the basement area is perfect.

      ouch! and here i was going to just ask about lifting an old house to pour a new foundation. my thoughts were to build a glulam beam in the crawl space and lift the house with four 20ton bottle jacks, pour the foundation and set the house back down on the pressure treat sill.
      the other thought was to dig out the crawl space further and pour foundation blocks/footings, place jacks, and pour a concrete beam atop the jacks, lift the beam until right height and place posts/blocking on the foundation blocks/footings, then skirt the structure.

    • @mattgrizz1153
      @mattgrizz1153 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@af0ulwind115 In the crawspace area I don’t have any concrete footers or blocks. It’s just brick on dirt! If I left the house the brick will fall. There has already been some cracking in the brick and it’s pulling away now. I did dig under parts of the brick and used a 20 ton jack and metal plate and jacked up the wall to close the gap but I’m worried if I do more than that it will all fall down.
