  • Watch my dad and I (mainly my dad) build the foundation to our 750 ft² home addition. We are also going to rebuild the attached garage which will be 530 ft².
    I work full time and am only able to help after work and every 10th working day, which I have off.

    Excellent video. I'm wondering how you handle the differential settlement risk of the additional basement foundation? I didn't see anything soil preparation beneath the footing - is it ok just to put the footing on the soil directly? I do notice that you laid the gravel - is this how you compacted the soil before you pour the slab concrete? Thank you.

    • @DaveOTech
      @DaveOTech  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, thanks for commenting. As far as I know, footers can be poured directly onto undisturbed ground. That way it's already compact and as hard as it can possibly be. Gravel was put next to the footers after pouring.

    Hope you don't have issues with the foundation separating in the future. Mixing bag by bag probably caused uneven curing.

      Haven't seen any signs of that and hopefully will not in the future.

      I thank God for him every day! So this whole addition came about because we initially just wanted to build a front porch but my dad said let's just redo everything 😂.

      That is Sketchup. It has a free web version, but has limited features.
      www.sketchup.com/products/sketchup-for-web
      You can find older downloadable versions for free online, as the new versions cost a couple hundred dollars.

    I love this! Is your uncle a contractor? Does your town have bylaws that allow homeowners to do this work themselves? In my town, almost everything has to be done by a licensed contractor, and trademans.

    • @DaveOTech
      @DaveOTech  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My dad has built a lot of houses in the area, and acted as the contractor on this build. My uncle just happens to own that tractor and helped us out :). We were allowed to do everything on our own. We did meet a permit for electrical work, and a permit for plumbing. Since we did most of the work ourselves we were able to save a lot money on labor.

    • @DaveOTech

      I did yes. It was something like $260 a year I think. My second one is expiring soon and we're not fully done yet. So going to be getting a 3rd soon.

    Do you mind if I ask how much architectural drawing cost?

    • @DaveOTech
      @DaveOTech  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, I think we paid our architect $700. Granted I did submit a lot of 3D drawings of the house to him. he was not designing the layout of the rooms, bathrooms and laundry, he simply made that based off the plans I sent him.
      He did however design all the truss systems for the addition and the existing house. Along with every other requirement needed for the local area.

      @@DaveOTech goodness gracious! I'm having a hard time in Akron, OH. I've called several companies/people. Only 2 came out. Both said our job looks pretty straightforward. The first guy said he'd be in touch but never followed thru. The second guy said it would be 7,000. His work would include the elevations and final blueprints. I provided a rendering in SketchUp. How similar was the work he provided for you? How comprehensive were your drawings? And thank you for replying!

      @@DaveOTech hi is that price for the complete build including interior or is that just for the exterior structures? Thanks.

    • @DaveOTech
      @DaveOTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that's exterior + interior. However lumber prices have skyrocketed and everything else went up in price as well. The costs for my entire project, including the garage expansion as well as the interior renovations is projected to be about $85k. I will make a more detailed video about the exact costs on the months/year to come.

    • @DaveOTech
      @DaveOTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Please keep in mind that this 85k does not include any labor. My dad and I are doing 85% of the labor and the other 15% is family and friends helping out here and there.
