In this video we will learn about using a concrete floor foundation with slab instead of a raise floor framing style to build a home addition. Keep in mind that local building authorities might be needed for consultation and building plan approval.

That holddown method with slab is great !!!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
thanks, I always find these videos super helpful as a way to start thinking through the general steps of a project. I know you're probably not a geotechnical engineer, but what I struggle to imagine is what all that new concrete and gravel (and house) would do to the soil under the house. maybe it doesn't happen often but, if the ground were soft or there was a void you were unaware of, couldn't that new addition act like a giant lever on the old house? maybe it wouldn't act fast, but could it slowly act over time? how do you start deciding if that's an unlikely risk versus a risk you should consider
You've got a good question and since I've never dealt with this situation, won't be any help.
Related Question, slightly reverse of what you talked about. What if there is already slab foundation on a house that was torn down; Can I use that foundation to build a crawl space on top of it?
Thanks, just recently discovered you! I have a couple of rental properties and thought it might be fun to try building from scratch.
I would think you could, but you might check with local building departments if you have on.
@@gregvancom Thanks!
Do you really need that much rebar for such a simple project? It almost seems overkill which is common among engineers. Either way great video, great info and explanations.
I don't think I would do it with less than 24 inch on center spacing and thanks for the kind words.
What is the advantage of the slab compared to just running joists?
If you listen to his commentary there basically isn’t an advantage as he said he wouldn’t choose to do it again.
That sounds like a future video.
You forgot the UFER ground. It's required.
I didn't know it was needed for this project. Feel free to explain why it is needed.
The NEC requires in new construction that rebar, metal water pipes, etc be bonded together
@gregvancom
Well, I'm for grounding if UFER grounding.
