      The Handyman what insulation would you recommend for thermal and sound control?

    • @TheHandyman1
      @TheHandyman1  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't know much about sound insulation. I always use the maximum amount of insulation that the cavity allows for.

      Thermal insulation doesn't do much for sound isolation. It works great for sound treatment (i.e. to kill reflections in the room and make everything sound clearer) but the only thing that isolates sound is mass. Meaning 3-5 layers of drywall is the best way to kill sound. There are products (like Green Glue, hanging clips, etc.) that may or may not allow for fewer layers of drywall, as well as some mounting techniques (like floating walls, ceiling, and floor - leave 1/4" gap between all surfaces - nothing touches - and use special flexible caulk) but the main principal remains - the heavier the walls and the ceiling the less sound will get through.

      nonarac88 I know that the answer to your question and the way G7130 answered it doesn’t seem to get you any closer to an answer than when you asked it. But he is in telling the truth. When you asked the question 4 months ago I hope you bought the materials then. If you haven’t, well hopefully your not in a hurry. Commodities are through the roof compared to three months ago. Dimensional lumber and OSB has doubled and tripled the last couple of months. A 2x4 -8’ stud was in the low 3$ range then now it’s almost not it’s closer to 8$ 2x6-12’ was 6$ now is 14$, 1/2” 4x8’ OSB was 9$ it’s now 24$. These prices are dictated by the natural disasters from Hurricanes and forest fires. But the show must go on. While these are the times where commodities traders look forward to because they may have been holding rail car loads of lumber in a reload load center , waiting til no one can fill an order and he’ll make all the money. But from being on both sides of the yard, these spikes in prices don’t last forever, but the big box stores have to get to flip out of all there stock they bought generally listening to a mill direct broker who bought the farm. If you have time. I suggest take your time and buy when the Market is back to notmsl👏😋

Your excellent attention to detail waterproofing the roof looked hard, as well as sheetrocking the closet. Time-consuming. Curious why a small 3x5 deck, since there's space, why not 6x8 or so? If you could buy directly from a lumber yard you could save on wood costs substantially, go to a habitat for humanity or repurpose store for the windows and doors and you could probably get away with spending around $2k to build it assuming you had the knowledge and all the equipment necessary to build with, which in reality isn't much for what you get.

    I'm curious. Where do you live? I live in Pennsylvania and the first winter/spring here with the ground rising/falling with the freeze would tear that thing right off my house. We MUST have a foundation that extends to three feet underground to prevent this.
    I'm looking at doing this and the foundation made from concrete blocks would cost around $700 with me doing all the work, unless I build on piers like you. Have you had any issues with the piers in the last 6 years?

    Would have loved to see the existing roofline continued, strictly for the how-to sake of it. Nice job none the less.

    This was more like watch me build a room rather than how to. I know nothing about construction. So I do have some questions. How do you level the floor and prepare the foundation? Why did you use batch insulation for the floor ( that's what it looked like to me) rather than spray? Or can you even use the drywall? Type insulation on the floor RMAX?
