So cool to see our hero gushing over another player. It’s as if Tom has been admiring Mr Suttons playing on this session and we’re lucky enough to be part of it. Thanks fellas.
I have been playing guitar for over 50 years, can't read music. I play bluegrass, i have no idea what the hell you guys are talking about, but i love it and it just sounds beautiful!!!
Man, I'm blown away by this masterclass - this is the sort of thing that helps make Homeskoolin the best guitar education channel ever. There are depths here that musicians of any level can learn from and appreciate. From this one short session of two masters of their craft speaking through their instruments, you could get a lifetimes' worth of musical wisdom - whether it's improving your soloing vocabulary, your writing, your understanding of chords and harmony or a million other things. Thank you, Tom and Bryan.
Damn.....some heavy musicality underneath some super sweet melodic playing. I've been a Sutton fan (as well as a Tom fan) for a long time. I'm in NC so Bryan was always on the local radar so to speak. A couple of acoustic guitars in the right hands is a beautiful thing. Certainly a great investment of 12 minutes.....great stuff.....
To just throw out, “ … was on stage with Billy Strings recently … “ AFTER mentioning touring with Bela Fleck? With no air of arrogance whatsoever, to share contrasting musical performances at the absolute highest level. Hats off to Mr. Sutton for being so damn personable! Thanks again, Tom, for your effort in sharing these understated, mini master-classes.
Loved The Darlin's, aka the real Dillards as the backing band, when they appeared on the Andy Griffith show. "There Is A Time" is a beautiful original composition by them that was featured on the show.
Man, just to have the opportunity to sit in like this and learn from people like y'all is a blessing. I appreciate what you're doing for us, Uncle Larry. Did I read correctly that you're working on a course with Brett Papa, or was he referring to making more TH-cam content with you?
interesting talk about worrying about what'll show up on social media - Bands like Zep & Floyd were blessed to be around in a time where they were able to go out in front of massive crowds and fearlessly work through unreleased material. Some things have progressed for the better and some have regressed
It's very simple... you just need to know.... everything! I am completely not cool enough or smart enough to listen in on this. I feel guilty. But I am going to keep watching! Great stuff.
I play all the electric shit, he plays all the acoustic shit It would be too much work for one guy to do all of that…we couldn’t even get through more than one song a day like that
This is pure gold. Sussing out those magical transitional notes when playing over changes is truly an art. Bryan is one of those players who is overflowing with ideas. I’m recovering from surgery on my right thumb, and that’s severely limited my picking. I’m finding that’s really become a blessing. Because I’m only able to play a few notes per measure, I’m suddenly able to play lines that I’m hearing in my head. It’s a real thrill to finally get a taste of what master improvisers can do. While Bryan was playing, I heard either alternative lines or notes that continued a phrase he played. At 70 years of age, it’s great to feel that this old dog is still teachable. Thanks guys for a 12:38 treasure trove of inspiration. By the way, one of my favorite two chord progressions is a minor 2 chord followed by a major 5 chord (“He’s So Fine”, “My Sweet Lord”, et al). Gets me every time.
well, this is somehow one of my favorite videos you've done, and i've seen them all. I've gotten a lot out of many of your lessons. but, this one was really RICH for me. I like hearing about the substitutions and how they get used. Thanks so much Unc! gonna hit that tip jar again!
Great video. Really interesting Ideas in Bryan's Bela part. And the whole cell phone thing. It still bugs me, in jam situations. But what the hell, let it loose, let the chops , (or in my case chips lol) fall where they may. Nice shout out to Doug Dillard and the LA Bluegrass guys. Roland and Clarence, Byron Berline, man all those greats are gone but not forgotten. Very cool video.
Thank you, Thank you...Always fun when Bryan and you are together talking shop, we get a front row seat to 2 of the all-time Greats, you guys are the GOATS!!!!.
6:54 - Tom: "You're thinking of that as like a 13 kind of?", Bryan replies "I just think of it as like a 2 9 over the 6.". I don't know about you guys but that's some next level pro musician lingo right there.
LUV this vid. Hey Uncle Larry, what about "Old and In The Way"? Jerry Garcia covering Wild Horses?? I was knocking guys out when I heard that! Thanks for all you do and keep up the fine work!
Evening Tom! I was hoping to get your opinion on Les Paul replacement bridges. If you find you need to swap one out, what’s your go to? Thanks in advance!!
Did Brian get a fresh haircut just for this video??? Lookin' sharp and sounding amazing!! And Tom, just watching your level of admiration for him is as joyful as the playing. Your humility and hunger for learning is a just as inspiring as your playing! Thanks for sharing all these gems with us
I’ve watched this video about 5 times already. It’s an amazing thing to watch this kind of stuff but you guys are awesome to for teaching and posting stuff like this. Awesome guys
Hey Tom, although I am aware that it’s not your go to music, I am curious if you’ve ever listened to and enjoyed Queens of the Stone Age? Straight up old school gear heads with a knack for producing.
Hey Tom! I have a show for you, Brian and you In your conversation was talking with each other in a language that most of us don’t understand. You two knew what you were saying to each other but someone listing in would think what language are they speaking. In all the learning I have had in my life it all fell together when I learned the lingo. Example Dr’s can speak to each other technically but have to dumb it down when they speak to the client. I would love to know the jargon of guitar. I know some theory so some of the stuff you two were talking about I understood. I think this would be pretty cool just revisit this video and walk us through it or do a video with Brett Papa. Just a suggestion for some content for you, I’m not nocking your video. Hughe fan of your content and playing.
hey Tom, I've heard you about the bridge you use on your Gibson Juniors. can you say once more what bridge that is? I can live with compensated intonation but my bridge is a bit of a stringbreaker
This is so cool. Thanks for sharing that little lesson on chord tones. Super helpful for this amateur struggling guitar player. And thanks also for those bluegrass suggestions. Totally new and interesting stuff to me.
I love what Bryan said about trying not to think too much when you are in the middle of playing a solo. That gets me too (except at a significantly lower level than this cat!) But I feel like if you over think a solo it can lose the soul of what you are playing.
Obviously there is no substitute for spending time on the instrument. I love what you two are doing here. I just take pleasure in any little thing I can learn and love when it starts to come together. I am not a player but I am an advanced listener. Lol Thank you so much.
First, thank you so much for the time you gave up on your lunch break Tom and Bryan. This is EPIC in my book. I think it was the third chord Tom played and Bryan came in with what reminded me of a Vince Gill sounding response. You guys are beyond brilliant and the fact that you share with us is very much appreciated. That's straight from my heart guys. Have a wonderful weekend everyone. HOMESKOOLIN baby, does it or can it even get any better?? Nope
For anyone that cares, here is how I got past worrying about someone filming me making a mistake. The ones that would judge me probably can’t do what I do, and the ones who can do what I do, wouldn’t judge me. Meaning, the opinions that you actually should care about are from people who aren’t going to judge you for a mistake. Mistakes usually happen because you were underprepared, not paying attention or trying something you haven’t done. Those are all potential growth moments and if someone wants to judge you for that, screw ‘em.
Tom, please listen to Julian Lage on Acoustic Guitar Sessions Presents Julian Lage here on TH-cam and check out that tune he plays. He plays these money notes in a way that is SO incredible. Bryan is a blessing sent from God. Truly. Thank you, again, for your generous contributions to our musical knowledge.
Man, Tom, it's like you guy's are are speaking a different language. Brian is so impressive. I'm still no good at theory stuff, but since I've been watching you. I've gone from complete idiot with theory to just plan bad.
I'm all in on this Homeskoolin' content! This is what we love to hear.. what makes music tick "the $$ notes/color notes" . When I was sucked in on the "wet t-shirt" BS this is exactly what I suggested when asked about suggestions for content for Homeskoolin'. Lot of players can improv but only a select few actually consistently hit $$ notes! P.S. I did stop short on the scam because I knew it was a scam fairly early in but was so excited to think I'm actually chatting with you UL. Further I certainly don't blame you because I'm well aware the inter web is full of scams.
Well, along with Tom and Bryan's respective talents, they have been playing guitar for a very. Long. Time. So, they're bound to remember what notes go best with given chords.
Best guitar channel on TH-cam because you never know what you’re gonna get!
Thank you, Tom and Bryan!
Incredible Pile Of Gold! I can't believe how beautiful Bryan's tone is. I'm massively inspired to suck less at guitar after seeing this.
Bryan, Like Gordon , is a pure Joy to watch with dear ol uncle larry
Yes, 100%
And such a relaxed and ‘quiet’ right hand. So smooth
Conversations in words, conversations in sound. “If you know the vocabulary….” Masterful and so incredibly down to earth. Thanks gentlemen.
So cool to see our hero gushing over another player. It’s as if Tom has been admiring Mr Suttons playing on this session and we’re lucky enough to be part of it. Thanks fellas.

This needs to be a regular segment: Uncle Larry with Cousin Bryan, you guys are the best.
Split the Nobel prize in tone to these two chord wizards who actually understand music at the highest level. Loved this episode!
That Bryan Sutton seems a talent, he might be going places
😂❤

Every time I see Bryan Sutton I want to go unplugged. But I have given up on that dream 😅
“The Money Notes” with Bryan Sutton... Enough Said!...
YES YES YES, MAY I HAVE MORE LIKE THIS! vocabulary and experience development while exploring time . thank you very much!
To just throw out, “ … was on stage with Billy Strings recently … “ AFTER mentioning touring with Bela Fleck? 2 masters of their craft. Love the Bryan Sutton episodes…the touch and feel he gets with his guitar is amazing.

we get this for free guys and gals
You are blessed to be friends with these great human beings, as are they to call you a freind.
Every time Bryan Sutton is on is my new favorite episode.
These guys are just on a whole different level... thanks for the ride!
It's very simple... you just need to know.... everything! I am completely not cool enough or smart enough to listen in on this. I feel guilty. But I am going to keep watching! Great stuff.
Best episode.
I wish I could understand, play, and speak music like these guys. Just beautiful stuff.
I wanna hang out with these dudes. This is solid gold.
Right? Internet treasure.
This shit's amazing. Getting into the heads of the masters and how the mystery of music works in the world.
Hey Larry. I am not trying to be a smart ass , but why does a session need two great guitarists?
I play all the electric shit, he plays all the acoustic shit
It would be too much work for one guy to do all of that…we couldn’t even get through more than one song a day like that
Tom, your channel just keeps blowing me away with tone and great musical talent. So good buddy.

Dillards were the influence for John Paul Jones to buy a mandolin for his hotel instrument…Great lesson guys👍🏼
Thanks Uncle Larry! I appreciate you doing this for us! ✌💖🙏😎
damn, bryans’ acoustic tone is effing incredible
Bryan is just the best. Thanks so much Tom. Wonderful.

John Deere Tractor and Larry Sparks sings Hank Williams are classic must listens.
Killer video and lesson 😍. Thanks a lot Tom 🙏🥰
Beautiful chord tones and shades... inspiring! Thanks guys! 🤙🏼🙏🏽
Love you guys and thank you so much for your kind and generous knowledge so blessed by the session men. Aloha and God bless
Doctor, you have quite a toolchest of (talent) friends in the business to draw from. The 6 and the sus - money notes - absolutely. Always appreciated!
This kind of stuff is just invaluable, thanks Tom and Bryan.
If only I spoke the language..........
Brian’s tone on “Spin you Around” is amazing listened to it 20 times just because of Brian’s guitar tone.
Thanks Brian
I assume you’re talking about the acoustic playing in the new version of Morgan’s song but how do you get the info on who played on it?
I assumed he did since he has done most of Wallens acoustic. Then I looked it up and it said it was him on acoustic
So good!!! His guitar has so much character to it on that song
Tone for days
Great video.
Really interesting Ideas in Bryan's Bela part. And the whole cell phone thing. It still bugs me, in jam situations. But what the hell, let it loose, let the chops , (or in my case chips lol) fall where they may.

Money notes for lunch ,
This video just reminded yet again how much I don’t know. U guys are awesome
That is some real deep shit Tom,
I could listen to this chord stack stuff all day!
Man, those acoustic guitars have a life all to themselves...
I’ve watched this four times now hoping someone could shed some light on what they are doing…I feel like I’m in the deep end of guitar playing
Brilliant!
I love you guys together and Brian is a boss on that acoustic.
Thank you, Thank you...Always fun when Bryan and you are together talking shop, we get a front row seat to 2 of the all-time Greats, you guys are the GOATS!!!!.
Larry Sparks ~ Lonesome Ramblers ~ Ramblin’ Guitar (1970) = solid

I’ve watched this video about 5 times already. It’s an amazing thing to watch this kind of stuff but you guys are awesome to for teaching and posting stuff like this. Awesome guys
This was beautiful. It's very cool to see behind the scenes of how people who know what they are doing make music.
Watching Tom with a permagrin, ear to ear...... very joyful.
Another Gem! Thanks Uncle Larry! Thanks Bryan…
you guys are the greatest.
Hey Tom, although I am aware that it’s not your go to music, I am curious if you’ve ever listened to and enjoyed Queens of the Stone Age? Straight up old school gear heads with a knack for producing.
“Happy tension.” Good descriptor.

We've missed Bryan. If you were washed up on a desert island, wouldn't it be a massive blessing to stumble on the very language you spoke?
hey Tom, I've heard you about the bridge you use on your Gibson Juniors. can you say once more what bridge that is? I can live with compensated intonation but my bridge is a bit of a stringbreaker
Once again, thank you Tom and your guest Bryan for sharing your amazing insight and experience!
Tom, what are your thoughts on 432h vs. 440h? Have you dug into the subject? And, where can I get a tuner that either is set or I can set to 432?
Wow. I usually just come here and say stupid things but, I really really got a lot out of this video. I will save it and watch it a few times.
This is so cool. Thanks for sharing that little lesson on chord tones. Super helpful for this amateur struggling guitar player. And thanks also for those bluegrass suggestions. Totally new and interesting stuff to me.

Dear Uncle Larry, Is it true you should never bend strings on a 12 string? only slide?
The only thing that comes to mind is, "Brilliant". Thanks Tom again for sharing priceless knowledge. 👍✌
Obviously there is no substitute for spending time on the instrument. I love what you two are doing here. I just take pleasure in any little thing I can learn and love when it starts to come together. I am not a player but I am an advanced listener. Lol Thank you so much.
Bryan's old guitar sounds absolutely delicious !
"F sharp? Good grief, Tom." lol It did sound good though. Very cool video.
Could Uncle Larry or someone recommend me top 2-3 shops in the Nashville area for a bone nut replacement?
First, thank you so much for the time you gave up on your lunch break Tom and Bryan. This is EPIC in my book. A Bryan Sutton TH-cam channel would be insane!
Play this video for anyone who thinks old guitars aren't worth the money.
Sweet melodic ideas. Thank you both, gents!
Much respect to you both for sharing these insights. This is the stuff you don’t dictate…it’s the stuff that dictates you.
Tom, please listen to Julian Lage on Acoustic Guitar Sessions Presents Julian Lage here on TH-cam and check out that tune he plays. He plays these money notes in a way that is SO incredible. He said ‘get out of F# good grief Tom’ 😂 this is amazing content by the way
2 session guitar players in Nashville who play on chart-topping records just taking a lunch break talking about you know stuff...😂👍
Homeskoolin' is the best. Thanks Bryan and Tom!
Only 1K to go Tommy, then it’s PARTY TIME!,,,🎉 Thanks BrYan!
