Watching Bryan Sutton play... it brings a tear to one's eye, seeing the dexterity and hearing the clarity of the notes played, the result of the years of work developing artistry of that caliber. Simply amazing.
Aside from the ridiculous amount of talent, feel, and skill, I dug how Bryan got lost in the sound of the guitar... still seems like even at the highest level, there is still magic in there. That is helpful to me... my skills being limited, I need that part of music maybe a little more than some to keep trying. So thankful for these organic sweet conversations. Thanks Tom and guests.
The right hand of god, that’s for damn sure. Besides uncle Larry, Bryan’s been the biggest influence on my playing since the lockdown madness days. He’s so erudite, with his discussion on what he’s doing, and with those magical hands. A genius of a guitarist, no arguments. Cheers fellas!
Does anyone put more thought into his playing than Bryan? There is an intellectual and philosophical element to his approach, yet he has harnessed it to enhance the musicality where others sound and style becomes robotic. He’s cracked the code for sure.
Wow!!! Brian is so amazing. The way his right wrist/hand seems to float is mesmerizing!!! Seems like such a great person as well. Your friendship warms the screen!!
Bryan Sutton keeps fixing my playing. I am a year into acoustic flatpicking after years of electric and bass and was struggling with the right hand. I realized that Bryan rests his upper arm on the edge of the guitar top. Here I was resting the lower arm (below the elbow) on the guitar. What a difference an inch or two makes! An "A-Ha! moment and a "Duh..." at the same time. Thanks, homeskoolin'! '!
Any video with Bryan Sutton in a studio with a guitar in his hands I am going to watch. Effortless picking all the time and has such great tone and touch. Talent helps obviously but to be that good you have to put in the time with practice. We get the benefit of just tuning in to listen, watch, and learn. Thanks for sharing Uncle Larry and keep these great videos coming! Bryan is my favorite acoustic picker for sure!
Wanna hear a joke? 50 other guys are on the 100 greatest guitarist of all time and both of these guys aren’t even thought of. These two are as good as there ever was. Truth.
Uncle Larry you are surrounded by people who are just as stellar as people as they are stellar as musicians. Mr Sutton is just jaw dropping good. One thing that is so evident in both his and your playing is the fluidity, how being so relaxed produces that fluidity and stellar tones. You have a real keeping in that new J-50, gorgeous sounds.
Delightful! That’s the only word that came to mind. And the smile on my face is the best kind. The kind that comes from that instinctual joy there’s no way to avoid or fake or deny-not that anyone should ever want to. Tucked somewhere between awe & giddy, delight is as honest & sincere as the fellas in this video seem to be. And that’s sincerely delightful as well,…honestly! haha😉 Thanks to all 3 of you Session Men!
I know that I will never get anywhere near the word good in my guitar journey but I feel by watching you and your friends play that I at least learn something and enjoy walking over to pick up my guitar. Thank you again
"What else do you need." well said. I love how you and Bryan and the pros play all the parts on solo guitar. I think many folks don't understand the years and hours of dedication, practice, and mastery to get to that point. I feel really lucky to turn this on and see what I can learn from it. Thanks
Spent the morning checking in with all the dudes from Gruhn's and now get Brian on the J-50. Thanks for giving us access to world I would have never been exposed to.
You're a lucky man Tom, having such great friends around all the time. I'm from the " make your own luck" camp, so you obviously have a lot to do with it, but havings these folks available to you to be able to foster these friendships is so great. Good for you Unlce Larry.
Love these field trips. The Tony Rice part is fascinating, all that cross picking is so hard! My J50 is my only acoustic and my favorite guitar to play, good score on that Tom.
@@DaveElke Glad you found so as well. There's a documentary type of video Troy Grady has on Carl Miner's cross picking technique and how it is quite unique. I have watched it quite a few times. I recommend it.
I absolutely love this video and the insight we get into what you guys do as session players do and how much sound affects you. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
Just extraordinary. Loaded with great stuff. Ill stay away from that third in the cowboy G and play the open D fifth. Love it. Thanks so much. And super special ending. (My brother was Tony’s doctor in Reidsville. Funny story, Tony told him to come over to the house sometime and he’d let him hold his Martin guitar. Bill thought that was hilarious.)
you know there is somethin to be said about the simplicity but very fulfilling content Tom. Keep it going please. Your interplay with others is something many will never know.
God that’s some good stuff. The first videos I’m looking for when I wake in the morning or when I get off of work is uncle Larry. Brings me such joy. And I’m not blowin smoke Tom I really mean it. Thanks for everything
That Bryan Sutton is sooo smooth. His touch dynamics on the acoustic guitar are just masterful. Speaking of Robbie and Levon, I think I'll watch The Last Waltz this weekend in their honor. Haven't seen it in a few years. Levon is far and away my favorite singing drummer.
❤Sutton, Sutton who’s got the Sutton❤️Tom I so love your channel and your evergiving of these musical gifts you give us. the bluegrass circle video has been one of my favorites for a long time
I jump in my truck in the morning before my drive to work and cross my fingers there's a new vid.... And damn was this one a great one! Thanks for the awesome time 🎸🎸...dang Brian good!
It's so great to see what you can do just within the chord shapes. Such great music all under your fingers. Bryan came up with a great name for a new acoustic tune, 'Bottom Feedin'"
It’s not the first choice, but sometimes you find and old weird guitar that has a sound you can use. It’s also old so it probably has a pretty free and open tone. I’m sure I’d prefer his 36 D28 for me, but this guitar is different.
@@jordangunit3078 I guess it's better than the second thing they did when they put a tune omatic bridge on top of their beautiful guitars. I wonder who was in charge of the acoustic department at Gibson at the Time. Maybe the janitor got a promotion.
Hi Tom! Aspiring guitar player here from Newfoundland. I love vintage gear, love bluegrass and cross picking technique (its new to me in the 5 years or so). But I have watched this vid several times now and the content is great. That Gibson is really something! and Bryan is pulling amazing tone and clarity from it. The vibe is so relaxing and all around just a good group of guys talking notes and gear! Keep'em comin!
Wow, what a combination! Uncle Larry's J-50 in Brian's right AND left hands! Tom, all of your videos bring me joy and especially when they include Brian Sutton!
Uncle Larry, I dreamt last night that I had an in person class with you at a school that looked like Hogwarts. So much wisdom on this channel, not even just about guitar or Music but about life. Thanks so much!
I love how Jimmy Lee's most played bass is one you sold him from your shop. I was on the phone with Dylan Altman this morning and he told me a story of buying his Gibson amp from your shop. He said, "The thing about Tom being such a good dude . . .I went in there looking for an old Princeton or something expecting to drop two to three grand. Tom was like, no, I know what rooms you're in and I know your style . . .you want this $500 amp right here. And he was right, Michael. I've been using it ever since." I bet there are a LOT of stories like that, Tom!! You could do a whole series on it. 🙂
Hey Bryan! I have a book that I need to return to you. THE GUITAR HANDBOOK you loaned it to me 40 years ago. How can I get it to you? Thank you, Bryan Tolbert
One of the top 5 Uncle Larry / Homeskoolin quotes…
“Cause when I play it, it sounds like a guy from Alice In Chains trying to play acoustic”
Damn - I could listen to Bryan play all day long! What a chill/cool guy!
It is INSANE how good Sutton is!
Watching Bryan Sutton play... it brings a tear to one's eye, seeing the dexterity and hearing the clarity of the notes played, the result of the years of work developing artistry of that caliber. Simply amazing.
And his touch … man oh man
Bryan's touch is unbelievable. Beauty in it's purest form. Thanks for having us once again Uncle Larry. You're the best!

I wonder how many times I've watched this.
such a best. saw him last month in Brno with Bela Fleck. what a privilidge.
I can see why Bryan is the #1 guy to call for acoustic guitar work. Looks simple, but that's the magic.
What looks simple ?

Love how Bryan kept playing that glorious guitar in the background! Thanks for the share, Unc!!
Thanks guys, nothing like a J 50 morning. My band mate has a 64 J 50 that is a Rolling Stone guitar for sure! Bryan and Buk thanks for sharing! Peace
Love hearing Bryan, those bluegrass licks are killer! Brings such a smile to your face.

It grooves incredible but the precision and the clarity of each note is out of this world !
That Tony Rice section was priceless, especially at the beginning when detailing that unique rhythm style.
Thanks Tom for everything especially the videos with Bryan. Y’all have such a good rapport

That guy from Alice In Chains is a pretty good acoustic player. Jerry Cantrell 😊
That J-50 is special. If it gets Mr. Sutton's nod of approval, it's a keeper.

That guitar sounds spectacular, especially in Bryans hands!
