This is a cover of an old folk song. The original version is different, but no one covered the song as epically as Led Zeppelin.

I was in high school when this first came out. Having grown up on Led Zeppelin I and II, this album was such a departure from their ealier work, that many of us LZ fans were caught off guard by this work, which we quickly embraced. The same reaction occured with LZ fans when Led Zeppelin IV came out (e.g. When the Levy Breaks"). Then "Houses of the Holy" came out, and we were stunned again. I am 66 years old and will listent to and love Led Zeppelin to my dying days. The greatest band in the history of Rock. The Beatles were different.
They were the Beatles and stand alone as well!

It must have been quite a shock to Zeppelin fans back in 1970 when they released this album. In comparison to their first 2 albums this was a shift to a more 'pastoral' sound with lots of acoustic guitar. I think they thought it was going to be more of the same with Immigrant Song kicking off the album but then with the exception of 'Since I've been loving you' & 'Out on the Tiles' it was acoustically dominated. It is one of my personal favourites. I love Gallows Pole especially when the banjo kicks in. Zeppelin's light & shade at it's finest.

Thank you guys once again for doing my pick, love seeing you react to my favorite band of all time!… Yes, yet another side of Zeppelin, and still so much more to discover!… the thing about that band is they first and foremost, played music for themselves, what they wanted to play and what they wanted to hear. It just so happens that the fans loved it as well! And they were exposed to so many different types of music when they were young, whether it was blues or folk, or psychedelic, rock, Celtic, medieval etc. They took all those influences and created their own sound with it. Glad you enjoyed this one… more to come!

This a song that is literally hundreds of years old. Page and Plant were such students of music, naturally they were aware of it, and they had the balls to give it a go even though it's not at all what the record company or the fans would have dreamed. That was them. They weren't going to just record 200 variations of Whole Lotta Love.

You're very genuine, very honest with your reactions and I really appreciate that. I love watching you and seeing your reaction to songs I grew up with, especially, like Simon and Garfunkel and The Righteous Brothers, and Zeppelin, of course. I'm sure I could come up with a few suggestions for 60s and 70s music, but even at my age I find myself drawn to bands like Tool. So may I suggest you try a song like Hate Me by Blue October, or something from Jane's Addiction or Alice In Chains.

Friends did you get some silver?
Did you get a little gold?
What did you bring me my dear friends
To keep me from the gallows pole?
What did you bring me to keep me from the gallows pole?
I couldn't get no silver, I couldn't get no gold
You know that we're too damn poor
To keep you from the gallows pole

Oh, yes, you got a fine sister

Great comment on teaching kids about music history and appreciation! I was fortunate enough to discover this music as it was coming out at the same time I was learning to appreciate classical music as well. Also, I was introduced to Simon & Garfunkel in 9th grade in school as part of a study of poetry, not music, when the Bookends album came out and my teacher played Save the Life of my Child in class. Gallows Pole might work as well for a study of poetry... imagine if you were assigned to listen to Led Zeppelin as homework!!! :)

I believe this is Zeppelin’s oldest song that they perform. The origins of the song go back hundreds of years. Of course Zeppelin are the masters of modernizing those old tunes.
This song slowly speeds up like another song off the next album, Stairway to Heaven. Even the drums come in later in both songs. Tangerine, the next song on the album, is a sweet song to check out.

You’re right it’s the voice. there wasn’t much visual back in a day other than the Song Remains the Same at the midnight movies😂 But it doesn’t matter what they say it’s how they say it!

The imagery was created by whoever posted this originally. Not Led Zeppelin. Lots of people take the time to do this

Led Zeppelin changed music behind the scenes. Before Led Zeppelin the creative output of bands was heavily influenced, even controlled, by managers, record producers and record companies. The Beatles and Rolling Stones for instance. Led Zeppelin's manager Peter Grant struck a deal with Atlantic Records to give the band total creative control, with Page as the record producer while Grant himself dealt only with the business side of the band. The best music of 1970s came from bands in control of their music.
Grant also changed the relationship between bands and venues. Before Zeppelin, venues and tour entrepreneurs hired bands for a fixed fee. The cream went to the venue or entrepreneur. Famously, the Beatles were booked for an Australian tour when barely known and they arrived in the middle of Beatlemania. The entrepreneur made a killing. Grant flipped it. The band organised tours and paid a fixed fee to hire venues. Any cream went to the band.

Yeah, Grant and Zeppelin established the 90% to 10% split in favour of the artist for concerts. Indeed, the Beatles and Elvis were ripped off before. Grant wasn't having that.
