One of the few shots of Jimmy with his “black beauty” guitar. That has a whole epic story behind it too. It was stolen from an airport shortly after this show and did not resurface for almost 50 years until it ended up in some pawn shop and someone got curious, which led to quite the investigation of its authenticity. I believe they even used a still shot from this song’s performance to match the grain from the fret board to the same guitar in the pawn shop. Anyways, in the end, they “brought it on home” to Jimmy and he was reunited with his long lost love. The whole story is here somewhere on TH-cam. 🎸

Now, decades on, I still listen to the full albums but generally will listen to a song or three from an album before going somewhere else. I've been a Zeppeiln fan since about 1972, when I was 13 years old. In those days I listened mostly to entire albums because I seldom heard them on the radio. A little later I transferred my vinyl albums to cassette tapes mainly so I could listen to them in the car. Now I swap their songs in and out of my Spotify play list, except for about 10 that are permanent residents. I rarely listen to a full album now (except for Physical Graffiti which is my favorite of their albums which I listen to in its entirety once a year or so) because there is 50 years of great music since that also demands my attention.

I only started listening to Led Zeppelin since 2020 but was a fan of Status Quo and Bad Co and Rod Stewart, with or without the Faces from 1970 onwards. The only Led song I listened to weekly was the opening to Top of the Pops.
    Wikipedia:
From 5 November 1970 to 14 July 1977: An instrumental version of the Led Zeppelin-Willie Dixon composition "Whole Lotta Love" was performed by CCS members.
21 July 1977 to 29 May 1980: No opening theme tune; a contemporary chart song was played over the countdown stills. "Whole Lotta Love" (instrumental) featured only in Christmas editions (CCS version used in the 1979 Christmas shows), the 800th edition from 26 July 1979 and the voice-over only edition from 22 November 1979.
7 August 1980: Instrumental version of "Whole Lotta Love" used. Last used in 1977.
14 August 1980 to 2 July 1981: No opening theme tune; the CCS version of "Whole Lotta Love" was played over some of the images of the featured artists and during the countdown stills in the Top 30 and Top 20 sections which were moved later on in the programme. From the edition of 14 August 1980 to the edition of 2 July 1981, "Whole Lotta Love" was heard only during the chart rundowns.
Now I have all the CDs I don't do downloads.

Andrei asked whether people listened to just particular songs with Led Zeppelin. People who listened to music in the 70s often listened to albums not just a particular song. When someone bought an album it was usually on 8-track tape or record.
With 8-track tape you couldn't skip, the album played on a continuous loop. With records you'd listen completely through on one side of an album or the other. Bands like Led Zeppelin created albums to be listened to, not singles to be popularized on the radio.
There are several reactors on TH-cam that actually listen to Zeppelin the way it was meant to be heard by listening to one side of an album at a time. Music in the 70s was more different than people of today realize, not just the superior talent and creativity of the bands but also the way that music was consumed.

In music, “call and response” is a compositional technique, often a succession of two distinct phrases that works like a conversation in music. One musician offers a phrase, and a second player answers with a direct commentary or response. The phrases can be vocal, instrumental, or both.

Dominika totally gets it, saying that lyrics don't matter. That applies to good rock in general. To answer Andrei's question, as a long time LZ album listener, I might skip a few songs. For example, on this album, LZII, i often skip Thank You which I find dull or Heartbreaker which was overplayed on radio. Tea for One on Presence is also skippable, because it's long and just a lumbering rehash of Since I been Loving You. Believe it or not I might skip a few great ones that are long and overplayed like Stairway.

Yes, the lyrics can seem unimportant but the phrase is “Bring it on home” as a request to his woman to bring her love home and not share it, yet it is also in the structure of the song. They go off in many different directions after the midpoint, and then Jimmy hits the riff, Bonham repeats the beat, Plant’s harmonica comes in and JPJ helps “bring it on home” in the end.

Yes, they had the time of their lives back then. Raised a lot of hell, destroyed a number of hotel rooms, drank a lot and did a lot of drugs. Somehow they survived the "time of their lives" as a few of us did. Still they weren't entirely unscathed. It did its damage physically and mentally. A lot of innocence was lost. (Thank god for that.) Those good old days were very bad for a lot of people in this world, and in some cases that never went away. By '73 we pretty much learned how the world worked. We forced the government to get out of Vietnam, then forced a crooked president to resign. Fifty years later we can only wish for problems like that again. We still know how the world works, we just can't figure out how so many people can believe the most obvious lies. Somehow we've brought back problems from the 1930s Germany. Well, at least in the early 70s the music was pretty great.

I really like this performance, especially since we don't get to see enough of Plant playing a harmonica, and the connection that Page and Bonham had was incredible, great to watch. Fun reaction, thanks! :)
Edit: I sometimes listen to specific songs but I often listen to an entire album, or one side of an album, skipping nothing.

Back in the day we listened to the whole album usually a few times, then maybe cherry pick. Amazing how our fingers could drop the needle right on the open groove between songs.

Anticipation, that’s what it was all about! We only had the album and if you were lucky a magazine that was featuring them. At the time there was no video there was no interviews. There was nothing. So when you got to the arena, yes, it was mind blowing! And yeah, entire albums was the listening experience. They were only about 40 minutes long and of course you always had your favorite songs but Zeppelin was meant to be listened to album by album. You’re getting a big dose of their diversity because we’re mixing up all the different styles and genres from various albums, but at the time we only had one album to listen to as it came out. So someday when you’re done reacting, you’ll go back and listen to this band from the first album on and you’ll really get a sense of their evolution and how they grew musically through the years!

I owned four of their studio albums and yes, I would sometimes skip a song, depending on mood. They are my favorite band, but I don’t love every song. Same with The Beatles. Both bands had SO much variety in their catalogues…..and I have preferences in what styles of music I like, so it’s inevitable, at least for me, that a few would not resonate for me.

Back in when I started listening to Zeppelin, we played the whole side. They were vinyl discs. In the first few weeks after a release we would play both sides but after that it would be one side. One side might be favoured but the other would never be ignored. Merely played less often. My friends and I did buy albums. not singles, and they were all mostly played as a whole side. Skipping tracks on a vinyl disc always risked scratching them, especially if you has consumed something at affected those fine motor skills.
The day Physical Graffiti came out a few of us gathered to listen to all four sides. That is about an hour and half. So many times that night someone else would arrive when the second disc was on. "What is that?" "Zeppelin's new album." So we would start over again. Four times that happened.

If you really want to know how we ( The ones old enough, and fortunate enough) to have listened to a fresh Zep album) here goes. It was a ritual really. A cozy room. A few friends. Darken the room if it's daytime. Turn on the black light and let those far out black light posters emblazon their acid trip ambiance. Light a stick, or two, of incense. Smoke a bowl of hash. At this point, the outside world is so far away. Put the needle on the vinyl and float. No head banging or running your mouth, for, this was a solemn event. The album was listened to from start to finish as we believed the artists meant it to be. The '70's were cool that way.

I remember Plant describing their album releases/reactions as coming in two phases. The initial impression when released, & then about a year later after they had time to be deeply embedded into memory a sort of second deeper realm of enjoyment was reached & that was the second phase. Enjoy your reactions, thanks!
