In this video I visit Salvador da Bahia, in the North East region of Brazil. Salvador is a fascinating city along the coast, the dark history of the slave trade in Salvador Bahia has given rise to a unique Afro-Brazilian culture which can be seen in the Bahian cuisine, music, religion and style. I was lucky to be in Salvador for carnival season and witness the parades in the old centre Pelourinho, sample the delicious Afro-Brazilian gastronomy like the famous moqueca fish stew and street food favourite acarajé, explore the tropical beaches and visit a local market which is crazy! This part of Brazil often gets overlooked in favour of typical tourist cities like Rio de Janeiro, but it's got so much history, the friendliest locals and a really strong Afro-Brazilian culture which makes it a great city to visit!

I had so much fun visiting Salvador Bahia during Carnival and talking to all the friendly locals about their city! The Afro-Brazilian culture is strong in this part of Brazil and more people should visit!! What did you think of the city?

Yes, the people are exceptionally friendly and the Afro-Brazilian culture is very strong and really good to see feel and experience, being from an African descent myself. I love your contents; they are very well presented and very representative. I’ve subscribed to your channel and sent it to my friends. Keep up the good work.

I have been to Salvador as an African, and it shocked me. Very emotioal experience for me. Although my first ever experience of authentic Afro-Brazilian culture was in Rio de Janeiro, Salvador was a whole new level.

@@diegohenriquemarquesdovale8025 Why do some white Brazilians love playing dumb with these matters of identity in Brazil? 🤦🏿I've witnessed it too many times now. The Afro-Brazilians know themselves and have no problem with this term, so what is it to you?
Brazilian is a nationality whilst Afro refers to ethnicity. One of many ethnic demoraphics or regional subcultures of Brazil. i.e. Indegenous Brazilian (Guarani, Ticuna etc.), Brazilian Japanese (aka Nipo Brasileros) etc.

@@diegohenriquemarquesdovale8025 It is not strange, most of every black Brazilian that does not despise their essence and link to Africa, they are proud of being of African descent. I said, there are black people in Brazil that were brainwashed by the media, and wanted to dissociate themselves from their African root. In general every black in Brazil know they are AfroBrazilian(Afro-Brasileiro, negro)

@@user-vw6bk4pb4l I don't know if that what he's talking about, but here in Brazil we usually don't use the therm "Afro Brazilian", as you hear so often in the US (Afro American) to refer to people. That doesn't mean there's no sense of ethnicity or that there's no recognition of the African roots by the black community, it's just a matter of usage of words. We use the therm to refer to religious practices (as in Afro Brazilian religion, like Umbanda and Candomblé) or even Afro Brazilian culture, but it's just not very used to refer to people, in that case the most common is simply "negro" or "preto".
One could argue that it should be used, since not using it could contribute to a certain "erasure" of black history in Brazil. It's an interesting debate to have in my opinion.

    • @user-vw6bk4pb4l
      @user-vw6bk4pb4l 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

@@freddyfleal That's not what he is talking about. I know that the conversation of identity is complex, and I've heard perspective from Brazilian of all colours. But my comment had nothing ambiguous or controversial. Certain people have a problem and its got nothing to do with me.
I didn't invent the term Afro-Brazilian they invented it and there should be no problem with my usage in this context, we all know the history. And that "we Brazilians are all Brazilians" or other ignorant statements like "there is not racism in Brazil, we are not like the USA, we never had segregation, we are all mixed, culture belongs to all etc, it's Brazilian not African etc." Some white people say those things I have heard it all and it tells me exactly what I need to know. Similar story in Latin America...
And you summed it up well in the last paragraph of your response above...

The Malê revolt ( Revolta dos Malês, also known as the Great Revolt and the Ramadan Revolt) was a Muslim slave rebellion that broke out during the regency period in the Empire of Brazil. On a Sunday during Ramadan in January 1835, in the city of Salvador da Bahia, a group of enslaved African Muslims and freedmen, inspired by Muslim teachers, rose up against the government. Muslims were called malê in Bahia at this time, from Yoruba imale that designated a Yoruba Muslim.

    Angelica,
I am thrilled that you visited Salvador. I have been following you for almost a year and a half on your TH-cam channel. And knowing that you are so close by is a true joy.
Well, Salvador encapsulates much of what Brazil is. The mix of ethnicities that have composed this enigmatic country that is Brazil. Salvador is something inexplicable even to us. A blend of architecture, ways of living, beliefs, and manners of speaking.
We can say that everything born in Bahia can be called authentically Brazilian. Obviously, it is not a wealthy city, urbanely structured where class differences, unfortunately, are very visible. That's precisely why Salvador is Brazil. In its splendor, in its beauty, in its contradictions which, paradoxically, reveal all the strength of our country.
We cannot understand Brazil, and even Portugal and Angola, without comprehending what happened and is happening in the true civilization that formed along the Bay of All Saints.
As my mother used to say since I was a child, and we would visit Salvador during extended holidays: "My child, Salvador is the Land of all Saints and all Energies".
    You are always welcome.

Se the Candomblé , one religion made with the mix of every African Gods coming from different parts of Africa and here they are a big family and community bringing the Axé for everyone. Yes, the people are exceptionally friendly, and the Afro-Brazilian culture is very strong and really good to see feel and experience, being from an African descent myself. I love your contents; they are very well presented and very representative. I’ve subscribed to your channel and sent it to my friends. Keep up the good work.
